    Recently bought one of these little gems myself. As u point out, the price diff is quite significant between the 2 types of gas canister. Verdict - it’s a no brainier! 👌🏻

    1) lying down with latch face up to come out in gas form instead of liquid. 2) dont shake it when using. 3) keep from overheat

    The cheap can has a huge arrow on its side. As long as the arrow is on the top at the lying can gas can pour out. There's a L-shaped nozzle inside the can which is pointing upward to that arrow. With this nozzle upwards you always gain gas with your hose.
    The cheap can contains 100 % of high efficient butane.
    The expensive can contains a mixture of propane (30 %, less efficiant) and butane (70 %). It performs better in temperatures below +5 °C. The propane stays gassy far below 0 °C and helps you to ignite your burner. If you keep the can beside the burner it will slightly warm up and the liquid butane will become gas at last and the burn continues.
    But you already have a burner with a pre-heating loop. So it's not neccessary to buy the expansive "winter" gas at all. With that pre-heating loop you could use your cheap butane can even upside down with liquid "gas". The pre-heating loop gasifies the liquid before it reaches the air.
    I'm using the cheap solution for years now and if you are buying the cans on stock you'll pay only 80 pennies for one can.

    I picked one up last winter and I love it! I can't believe I didn't know about these before. I live in western Canada and when I go on road trips it's usually through the mountains with towns being fairly small if they exist at all. So it's hard to find replacement fuel and I hate taking a bunch extra because the car can get fairly hot. A couple years ago I ran out in the middle of a road trip and went hundreds of kilometers before finally finding some ISOPRO. Plus we had to basically find a specialty shop in a tourist town (Whistler, BC) so it ate into our time we could have been away from people. It also feels like a big waste to be using ISOPRO to boil water for some tea. I can justify it if I'm doing a back country backpacking trip and want to shave off all the weight and volume I can. But now if I was to head out on another road trip I'll just bring a couple cans of butane and then I can get more if I run out. Save lots of worry about running out. So as long as it is safe this seems like a great investment for lots of reasons. I would probably actually buy a couple since they're so cheap but also small. Plus I noticed they come in lots of colors so you could get one to match each can of butane :P

    WARNING ABOUT FLARE UPS - THIS WARNING IS TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE BUT MAY BE INCORRECT. FIND OUT FOR SURE FROM AN EXPERT.
    These bayonet type camping gas canisters are great, BUT inside the cylinders is a plastic tube that must be orientated the correct way. To allow the tube to let gas out (and burn with a blue flame) rather than let liquid out (and burn with a wild, dangerous, and very high yellow flame) the cylinder needs to be in a horizontal position AND rotated so that the notch in the rim (the notch is near the valve) points upward.
    FAILURE TO DO BOTH THESE THINGS IS HIGHLY DANGEROUS
    There may also be other hazards I am not aware of!
    If what I have said is correct I would suggest adding warning to video.
    Enjoyed your video.

      exactly what happened to mine i bought 3 different makes of adapters even a dearer one and all flared up badly so i purchased the proper cylinder and have been using it since last year with no problem at all,i wish i had known about this issue

    • @dougfields5798
      @dougfields5798 4 роки тому +1

      You are correct plus the gas in the taller cans is only BUTANE and not a PROPANE Butane mix as in the Coleman can ,the butane can will stop working at lower temperatures plus the calorific value of butane is much lower than butane propane mix .

    I don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but there is a significant difference between the two types of gas canisters. The Coleman - and almost all others of the same type contain a butane / propane mixture - the cheaper cartridges are butane ONLY. The reason for this is that a butane propane mix is *significantly* hotter than butane alone, and works much better in really adverse weather conditions.
    The really great thing about the lower temperature and cost of butane only cooking, is that it can simmer slightly better and costs way less - as you have mentioned. Just don't take it on any high alpine routes :-)

    • @RobnDob
      @RobnDob 6 місяців тому

      I was going to say about temps but you covered it. The cp250 are good for summer but in winter they’re useless and loss heat while cooking.

  • @BSmith244
    @BSmith244 3 роки тому +6

    I use those adapters too but the cheap blue canisters are butane only and perform poorly in the cold, whereas the others are a butane and propane mix so you can use them in lower temperatures.

    • @BSmith244
      @BSmith244 3 роки тому +1

      If it’s cold wrapping them in a sock or a blanket can help, otherwise the pressure drops and you get a weak flame.

    I've been using these adapters for a long time and they work great. I live in Philadelphia PA in the USA. Near me the cheapest and easiest place to get the canisters is at the Asian supermarkets. I'm told the cans don't last as long as the dumpy containers. So you'd have to take two or more depending on usage for a 3 or 4 day trip. If you're backpacking, that could be hassle? I bought my adapter on Amazon for a £1

      Eds Shed they'll last ever so slightly shorter because they don't have quite as much gas in. I think the tall cans are 220g and the dumpy ones are 250g. at the end of the day. it's just a different shape container, so I can't believe you'd need two or three tall cans to replace one dumpy.

    I'm not massively keen on those adapters, they aren't a very secure fit. Also the Coleman gas is propane/butane mix, whereas the tall cans are usually butane/isobutane. There is a difference in flammability, I nearly found out the hard way... All I can say is don't use it indoors when you test it. Don't get me wrong, these things could be very useful as long as you're not an idiot...

      English woodsman each to their own... in my opinion there are things worth scrimping on and some things not, anything involving flammable gas is the latter for me. I did buy one, but I don't think they lock in securely enough. I won't be using it unless I really must. Especially when used with cheap Chinese made stoves which don't have any safety certification and these seem to be getting very popular.

      yea this adapter is only for stoves that have liquid feeding mode or a pre heater tubes, it can become dangerous because those cans can feed liquid butane if not taken care properly.and you dont want a fireball stove.

    I heard Butane does not evaporate well in cold weather, thus the Propane/Butane mix is way better if winter camping, or if high altitude at night for example.
    @EWN - Have you noticed a difference in the burn rate in UK as per above? Cheers.

      @@englishwoodsman yeah had a flare up on mine (scary ,good job it was a metre from my tent and my face wasnt over it) and was Youtubing the problem and the comments on here have confirmed wat i wanted to know......basically the cut out on the canister has to be at the top if your gonna lay it down horizontally (as its vitually impossible to use them standing up which i thought was how one would stop it flaring).
      i may do a video myself to clarify/test this as theres very little info out there.

    Only problem is the fly spray type cans are Butane which loses all pressure in the cold so no good in winter.The proper ones are 70/30 butane,propane mix so good in all temperatures

    The two different gass container are quite different.
    The cans with the screw connector, contain propane, the bottles with push connector contain butane.
    The propane bottle is designed to lay down, not to stand up. It is also important pay attention to the orientation. The slot on the side of the connector is supposed to face up, to allow gass flow, not liquid flow.
    +Butane bottle cost less
    - Side-orientation/rotation of bottle is important to avoid liquid butane.
    - gass is not usable bellow its boiling point, butane boils where water freeze.
    -Propane cost more
    + Just keep connector on top.
    + Can be used well bellow freezing of water.

      Dougie Paxton Propane works at lower temps then butane, it's butane that doesn't burn at low temperatures, hence the butane propane mix in the cartridges. Still doesn't like being ice cold though.

      Dougie Paxton No worries pal. I know what you mean. it's better to just go prepared rather then face the inevitable spluttering gas stove. Depending where you are camping, I've just got a gasification wood burning stove off ebay and it's absolutely superb IMO. ATB
