Mary would've done great on these show tunes. Gordy didn't EVER want the spotlight to be off his precious Miss Ross. SAD.

Anyway, she did: she had her Can't Take My Eyes Off You solo spot in the live shows at this time. She also performed it on the Hollywood Palace.
Mary actually did have solos during this time, they just aren’t that well known. But even Mary has made it clear that by this time Diana was going solo, so she started getting more solo spots to build anticipation for that change.
We were supposed to see THE SUPREMES and who do we get stuck down our throats? Diane!!! This is what we had to endure during the "let's make Diane a star" days of The Supremes. It still makes my blood pressure BOIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was ABSOLUTELY not the same without Flo. Cindy did not have Flo's voice or her personality. What Cindy DID have, however, was the understanding that she was a second class Supreme and needed to stay in her place: "Stand over there and be quiet!!" Diane was not going to replace Flo with someone who was too pretty, too assertive, or who had too good of a voice. After Flo was removed, Diane was completely unleashed with no resistance...........that is exactly what she wanted. Now, I don't know if you ever met Cindy. If you haven't, she was absolutely one of the nicest and most personable human beings you could imagine. I think that comes through in her performances.
