Dear John, can you please settle this once and for all? Is the alleged incident of Diana ‘pushing’ Mary just a Urban Myth that has developed over the years? The story that a few seconds of footage were edited out of the broadcast version still lingers on. Did you sense any awkwardness on stage or anything note-worthy about their interaction you can tell us about? Thank you for sharing your memory with us, it sounds like a wonderful night.

It was so nice to see the Supremes reunited however briefly. No mention is made here of Ross pushing Wilson out of "her spotlight". I do find it disappointing that other female groups such as the Marvelettes and the Vandellas were not even invited to attend much less participate.

Today, this show is best remembered for MJ and moonwalk. The show itself did a LOT of things wrong: the Funk Brothers weren't in it, Jr Walker, Mary Wells, Martha Reeves performed for mere seconds, David Ruffin and Eddie Kendricks werent mentioned or on the show, motown bass player James Jameson had to buy a ticket from a scalper and sit in the audience like everyone else, Isley brothers, Spinners, Gladys knight and the pips weren't mentioned. It was basically a tribute to the company not the artists that built the company.

It would have been better if the Supremes had been able to perform at least 2 of their hits. Instead, they chose a song that Mary & Cindy never sang on. Reach out and touch was done by Diana and some other background singers right before Diana left the group. I thought it was a weird song to pick when they had so many other great songs to choose from. They were pretty much the biggest group on Motown records and barely performed one song together on this huge night.

The Supremes whole saga is fascinating. More than one thing can be true at the same time, especially in a group. Diana was obviously the star and was by Gordy who saw her charisma and drive early. I also believe nothing could replace the original three. Mary I believe always felt powerless that she couldn’t have done more to help Florence. Diana was driven to be more than a Supreme and Mary would’ve been happy being that forever(probably a little unrealistic)). However the failed “reunion” tour obviously affected Diana because although as a solo artist she sells out the only way a Supremes reunion could take place was for Mary to be on board. Both were probably a little childish @ the Motown 25 celebration. But I’m sure the producers were told if Diana didn’t get things her way she wouldn’t have participated…

Interesting read. It seems you're a Motown aficionado like I am :) I'm the biggest DR fan that I know. I've read everything about her. That said, I agree both Diana AND Mary were "off" that night. Diana often gets all the blame because she got most of the glory. But if you look at it, DR didn't really wanna re-unite. Once she left the group SHE LEFT. However, Suzanne had promised NBC that there would be a Supremes re-union. That's one of the reasons NBC signed the deal. So Suzanne and Berry had to beg/convince her to participate. She declared, well ok but I'll do just ONE Supremes song. Mary wanted a few songs. When Diana refused Mary was obviously upset. She told Cindy, if Diana moves forward WE move forward with her this is not 1965. On stage that was a surprise to Diana who had always sauntered forward back then since she's singing lead. But every move forward she did, Mary also did and that, I think got on her nerves. So she grabbed Mary's arm to move back. Obviously Suzanne and Don Mischer cut that out in edits. If you noticed in the end of the video Mary started singing the lead. She was defiant. Even Mary said it in her book a few years later. "If anyone stands in the way of Diana and the spotlight, then it's their own fault" However, I'm glad they had conversations shortly before Mary passed.

With all due respect to everybody who helped create the show, but imo it failed to capture the essence of Motown and its impact in its heyday. Where were Holland-Dozier-Holland who more than any other in-house songwriter/producer helped create that typical "Motown-Sound"? It was the formula they tailored for Martha, the Sups and the Tops that launched their careers. A formula that so many in the industry tried to emulate. Where was Norman Whitfield who led Motown into the seventies? Where were the Funk Brothers whose rhythmic punch was heard on more hits than all the leading bands of their day stringed together? Where were pioneers like Marv Johnson who brought in the first cash? Or the Marvelettes who gave them their first no. 1 hit? The heads of Motown were never appreciative of the label's creative contributors, nor did they show any respect for their artist. Instead they found the space to squeeze in Adam Ant. I like him, but he definitely had no place there. And the misfired reunion of the Sups was just symptomatic for a concept gone wrong.

Mary RESENTED the fact that she wasn't asked or directed to do those same things - just like she always did. The producers asked Diana, Mary and Cindy to wear black, white or black & white. Mary shows up in the REDDEST DRESS anyone has ever seen. Mary had the entire evening planned to become a big dramatic spectacle - just like she always did. Diana IS a star and she certainly was at Motown 25, so why would she have to FIGHT to be center of attention. The directors and producers decided to use their top star to their advantage on stage - to speak for the group, to bring Berry down onstage, etc. That was their call. Why would she have to fight for that - it was handed to her. What you're missing is that there was only ONE PERSON who objected to those honors being handed to her and wondered "why does SHE get to do everything?!" Three guesses who that little trouble-maker was. You don't know Mary's history in all that ...

@@laladydi5734No need to lie, yes Diana was doing as instructed but it is the producer's fault for not telling Mary and Cindy of the plans for Diana to invite Berry down, Suzanne herself said she only told Diana to do that at the last minute, the finale was not planned to be that way at all. The whole only wear black or silver myth has been disproven by several artist. Many of the artist chose to wear black and silver themselves because it was the silver anniversary but it was never a requirement, Mary wore her silver dress during her speech and changed into the red number for the finale, but several performers including DeBarge wore red and other colors. Diana forgot the words to Someday, which is understandable because she doesn't like the song and hadn't sang it in 13 years at that point, Mary stepped in and saved the performance by picking up the lead, every magazine reported the shove, and you and I and everyone else can clearly see a huge chunk of their performance is edited out because of that very reason, it was not only Mary who reported this incident 3 years later in her book, all of the press that were there that night wrote about it, that's why Smokey ran onstage as well

Why would Diana Ross do that? By this time, Diana Ross was perhaps the biggest star that Motown had ever produced! She was with RCA, doing her own thing. She had her own company. What was Mary, a former member of the Supremes? Mary was the issue, not Diana Ross. Look how she acted! She was jealous of Diana Ross's success. Diana Ross simply did all that was asked of her! Mary was the cog in the wheel... It is called jealousness, envy, hate, and meanness... all embodied in Mary.

Yes, I agree that Mary may have had some resentment and couldn’t let got of the past. However, that doesn’t discredit nor devalue her truths. She was there, not you. You all love to discredit anyone’s story that has a negative story about Diana all cause you all favor her.
Truth is truth. There were many more like Richard Pryor and others that said Diana did in fact push her and she was inebriated along with acting like she was the star on stage.
If everything was innocent why did they edit it then?
Yes, Diana Ross was powerful and Mary was talented as well but both women are accountable for their behaviors. Only difference is Mary has literally admitted her wrong in her part. Diana has never done it. Mary just refused to let it go and let live.
