The Graston Technique is also known as Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM). These tools allow us to mobilize the soft tissue, decrease inflammation, break down scar tissue, and promote healing.
    In this case, we use Graston to help reduce knee pain and start the healing process.

    Hi! I had a knee sprain back in mid july. I was working around the house, late at night and was walking in the garden and tripped over one of my dogs. Not sure exactly how my knee bent as i was more concerened not to fall on my shoulder and break my arm... i think i bent the knee on the inside from the outside. I think i felt some pain while getting up but i realized something was up the next morning. By late evening i couldn’t walk very well and my knee was swollen. So i went to the emergency room. They did xrays and put me in a semi cast for the next 2 weeks ( minimum) and gave me antiinflamatory oral meds and the heparine shots to do at home. I ended up in a fully locked position with the cast for 17 days. Then i got a full knee brace but wore it only 2-3 times when i went to the orthopedest as i was pushing exactly on the MCL and i was hurting like crap. The 3 doc that saw me sid most liked it is a MCL ACL tear and a meniscus injury and sent me to the MRI.. ( done at 3 -4 weeks after injury). The surprize came when the MRI showed nothing ( meaning whatever it was it had healed). The doctor then sent me to physiotherapy saing in 7 days i’d be fine.. i never did go to physio cause i never had the money for it but i did research and did most of what should be done. Now i am squating, doing adductor and glute exercices and my overall muscle connection has improved drastically ( it wasn’t super great to begin with). But i still have some pain in the knee, it is popping ( i think it was pre injury too)... as far as i can tell the knee area still has some fat deposits from the post injury time like exCtly above the knee cap and on the right side ( where you showed in the video). My own feeling is that they prevent full mobility/ full motion and they put preassure on certain areas of the joint and that’s where the pain comes from. I started foam rolling a month and a half ago and found it incredibly helpful but the swelling in those two areas i mentioned is still pretty high.
    Shall i start using the technique you showed in the video or i could end up doing more harm? What do you advice?
    Best regards from Romania, Dana

      Thanks for letting me know. I would say that this technique can help. I also have another video "myofascial release for knee pain" which you can watch that can also help. If you are doing this technique, its best to see a professional. I am glad you are getting better and doing your exercises. Keep up them and if you need to it may be worth spending the money to get a professional opinion, especially since there is still swelling.

      @@marclski8052 yes.. I changed my diet basically from vegetarian to keto and now ketovore. This basically helped my body heal itself up. I also added good omegas, potassium citrate, magnesium and good D and B’s to help the change. My knee is finally unswollen and not popping after 2,5 years and without much “burdening”. I am convinced that good food is 85-90% of healing and the rest is exercise and sleep. Had you asked me this 2,5 years ago I would have said exercise is all you need. But i was vegetarian for 16 years and thought i will die with some of my aches. Once i gave up sugar, vegetable oils and grains and started eating good fats and meat it was all.. wow

    thank you for your video. I recently stretched my back side of knee and walk a lot.. then what I got is, MCL pain. this pain is only on the thigh bone side. I heard that pain on thigh bone is tend to heal quicker than pain down below. right now I am wearing knee support. is it ok? do I need to at least move for flexibility? or just totally rest? anyway when my body say this kind of signal, I am afraid if I will get hurt.....I will do the technique you told me on this video. thank you again.

      Total rest is not the best. You need to keep it moving but still need the support which is why a brace may help you. I would urge you to seek care and rehabilitation for the knee and MCL in addition to this!

    • @DrJoshJagoda
      @DrJoshJagoda  4 роки тому

      It may be an MCL issue but you will need to learn how to strengthen the hips, knees, and feet. If this is going on for a while a lot of the foundation of your body will need to be trained and you need to gain strength and endurance in these structures to support the knee.

    What would you suggest is the duration of a single session of graston on this injury and also how often? Pre/post exercise? I have mcl inflammation that comes back through running and found the physio using the graston knife really helped. Thanks

    • @DrJoshJagoda
      @DrJoshJagoda  5 років тому +2

      Most research studies occur that produce about 5 min. of Graston. If you can find a provider that will do Graston for 8-15 + minutes to the affected area, Quad, Possibly work the psoas and hamstring then you will be in good shape. Most of the time I see patients 2X a week for 4 weeks then re-evaluate it. In my office I spend 20 min with a patient and I see great outcomes. I prefer exercise after the Graston has been done but to be honest it doesnt matter because you have to put the work in either way. Post Graston Rehab may just feel more comfortable since you will be warmed up and more mobile.

    Hi Dr. Josh, I would really appreciate your thoughts on this: I do Asian squat for low back, hip and general flexibility as part of a complete warm up stretching routine. 4 weeks ago while in the squat, I had a pop occur on the medial superior aspect of the right knee cap. It seemed like something that would go away in a few days and had no swelling. ....Until the next day after a tennis workout the knee swoll across all quad attachments. I found extreme tenderness in the gracilis/adductor magnus extending 10 inches above the knee. Also tender in the MCL and PES area. It took 10 days for swelling to mostly dissipate and while it seems to be improving I don't have confidence in it yet. Daily doing massage and light recovery exercises. Have you come across an injury that happened the same way?

    • @DrJoshJagoda
      @DrJoshJagoda  Рік тому

      Yes we see injuries like that. Sounds like some trauma happened and it could be those tendons you mentioned. It can also be something within the Meniscus or knee. I find a lot of injuries do well with working on the knee and hip/thigh here.

    Hi, I sprained my knee months ago while trying to spike a volleyball during a club fair because I landed on my left leg first because I play badminton (I'm used to land on my left leg sometimes when I do a smash) and I also jumped hella high and strook the ball so hard so I went to the doctor afterwards and they suggested me to wear a knee brace and take some pain relievers. I wore it for about 3-4 weeks then I stopped wearing the knee brace. I then wanted to start learning football (soccer) since I thought my sprain was gone since I can run and walk properly but I can't jump. One time I felt it come back as if it was a bone wobbling but I knew it was my muscles. I wore my knee brace again since I don't have the budget to go see a doctor again. Till this day what should I do to atleast slowly heal my sprain? I may be impatient but I genuinely want it to be healed. Please reply.

    • @DrJoshJagoda
      @DrJoshJagoda  4 роки тому +1

      If you really want it to heal and you are constantly doing sports that require cutting, pivoting, and kicking you will need to not only strengthen the knee but the muscles surrounding. This includes the ankle, foot, and thigh, hip and pelvis. If you are impatient you will continue to get injured or at least risk more injury. Money can be an issue but you will likely have more issues if you don't rehab this the proper way from the beginning!

    • @DrJoshJagoda
      @DrJoshJagoda  5 років тому +3

      Hi Emad, you really cannot loosen a tendon. It is deep and dense with connective tissue and the muscle is the structure that has flexibility not as much the tendon or ligament. This technique helps to loosen up the tissue but the PRIMARY reason is to help improve mobility, stimulate blood flow, healing, all while reducing scar tissue build up.
