'Self love, properly understood, as having your own back, is not selfish'
This is beautiful. Others often asked how I could still be nice even with rude people, and since I can't properly express it I just said 'because I can afford to do it'. And that's why I can afford it: because I have my own back by hugging my own demon, so I could do it to other's demon as well. Brilliant TED talk 👍

Over the past couple of years, Dan Harris has been one of my most positive influences. I started using his Ten Percent Happier app after reading his book of the same title. Some people mastered sourdough bread making: I meditated, listened to podcasts, and applied mindfulness whenever possible. I’ve meditated daily for over two years now, without fail, and it’s the good habit that I acquired that helped me through the pandemic with most of my sanity intact. Glad you’re not a jerk any more, Dan, and thanks for sharing.

As an "A - Type" New Yorker who is now battling cancer, one of my goals is to come out of the other side of things kinder, gentler and more compassionate- much less of an "ego driven jerk"...To recover as someone who loves myself better and is therefore better able to love and support others. Thanks for this Ted Talk, Dan Harris.

I have to say that I'm very happy that Mr. Harris has continued on his journey and is sharing it. Years ago I was skeptical and ignored him but hearing this talk makes me feel he is the type of person/people we need to be the new gurus in the 21st. century. Relatable people in and somewhat 'of' the world, for that is where life happens. I agree, love is the only thing that can save the world. Reason without love/compassion is dry and can become cruel and inhuman. Good on you Mr. Harris.

Dan is right, it is a skill to love oneself. What you have to do is work: face fears, face being uncomfortable, face difficulties you have run away from your whole life. It takes a decision to stop being a jerk to one self. This time not alone.

This was a delightful talk. I think while we are taught to be kind to others which is extremely important, we're not taught to be kind to ourselves with the same vigour and passion. Most of us never learn to love ourselves and we're overly critical and outright mean in our self assessments. It's even more true for children who're raised in unhealthy, chaotic and abusive homes. The positivity to be derived from this is that it's always possible to start on your journey of self kindness and to extend the same kindness to others as well.

Thank you so much for this talk. Awesome!!!

Doing this 8 min into the talk I almost immediately cried. Alone fighting your own battles doesn't mean alone if you got your own back and are "active in your own rescue." I have been shielded from learning all this sort of stuff and became a horribly self hating person while loving and gentle and understanding BOTH since my youth. Since leaving all my family and friends I am on a solo journey to find everything useful to a happy life. Medicinal herbs for proper self care in the kitchen (ginger for nausea). Repeating the same goals and I am statements at bed time and when I wake up. Ice cold baths. Anything that is useful. Philosophy, Buddhist, and well being positive quotes from notible wise people. Anything and everything. This talk adds to that very well. "Worry not for tomorrow. You will face it with the same tools you have that arm you against today." I hope to eradicate the self hatred in me. I'm hard on myself but like he said... it can be a positive driving inner life coach rather than a spiraling negative flogging.

Notes. May you be happy, safe, healthy, and live with ease. Generate warmth with full sentences. Conjure image and send phrases to: Easy person or pet, yourself, mentor, neutral, difficult, then all beings everywhere.
Consciously counter program against inner critic. And when you feel yourself spiraling, but your hand on your heart and speak to yourself like a good friend or supportive coach instead of a sadistic inner tyrant.
    Amazing talk. Thanks

The way he taught us to meditate is a basic meditation type in Buddhism... We learnt that when we are 5,6 years old, coz I'm a buddhist by birth... Eventhough I didn't use it much in my life.. Now I see the whole meaning of it.. I'm grateful to be born as a buddhist to learn them from early ages.

That’s right! It works. And I did it) just by watching my ego (for a month-two) and not trying to put it out. I had been saying to myself “I see my ego” (meaning all destructive feelings and thoughts, fears), not imagining it (that’s important). And it had gone away) of course it’s comes back sometimes. It’s our mind. But when you see it, it goes away. It really helps with relationships and with all your life))

Brilliant TED talk 👍 so natural, engaging and thought provoking. It reminded me of my own journey 6-7 years ago when I went through a very painful mid-life crisis that lasted 12-18 months which completely overhauled my life. In my darkest days, learning how to self love (for the first time in 46 years in 2015!?) was the key to my recovery and leading a blissful life now. Everything you said was completely on-point 👍 I practice self-love every single day even if I have to say no to loved ones because the only person who really and properly looks after me is me ..and yes, I managed to find my heart which was buried away in so much external crap that we take to heart..I now have a great heart and brain connection..start and finish with you 👍

We have to love and appreciate ourselves because if we don't then other people won't do that. It's also utterly significant to value your own efforts. Sometimes, I tend to condemn myself for not studying so badly or underrate my knowledge. Then I realize I am being a jerk to myself. In such cases, I tell myself there is no need to be so strict with your own self. You have not done something today, you will do it tomorrow. Live and soak up your life. Life is not all about studying. You won't miss anything out if you don't study for one day. Those words help me to calm down and not to get myself down.

Wonderful! I love Dan! He is real and I use the 10 percent happier app. Wisdom here. One of the biggest obstacles to our inner growth is an honest and clear acceptance of ourselves in total: the good and not so good and the shadow; and then to learn to accept others for theirs. Like the saying goes "Friends are people who know you really well and like you anyway" ...this includes ourselves.

    Thank you for your vulnerability.
Having my own workplace appraisal, it is hard to hear all your flaws and failures and still feel worthy. I do the opposite of taking it out on others, I become anxious instead and self flagellate.
I agree with the summation that our social fabric is unraveling.
The never enough-ness and always behind-ness societal pressures are the catalysts for mental health burnouts and breakdowns.

  • @ajiari7303

The argument presented in the video I strongly agree, we must not be selfish with ourselves, we must love ourselves. Because being selfish in yourself will make a bad impact on us. We need to love ourselves more and be more at peace with ourselves. But that doesn't mean we have to be selfish to others, we also have to love others. Self-love, properly understood, not as narcissism, but as having your own back, it will make you better at loving others.

I recently started a practice of “noticing”. I set a monastery bell timer to go off every 15 minutes. (I think it’s a plum village app).
I stop, inhale and exhale once. Then ask myself “who’s here right now”? Then answer myself: “[angry, depressed, responsible, thinking] Carlos is here”.
Then, if “angry me” is here. I respond with: “that’s ok, let him talk. Nobody heard him when he was a small boy and hurting”.
It’s amazing this “noticing practice has improved my productivity, decreased my debilitating depression, and anxiety.

Thank you for your vulnerability. Great talk. I also enjoyed your book, 10% Happier, very much and recommend it frequently. My inner critic is indeed an AH, and I definitely need to give myself a break. I can see how doing that can also lead to being less critical of others, which I'm expert at. Ultimately, my opinion of another person doesn't actually matter to my life or theirs.

Brilliant. I’m a big fan of Dan. I totally relate to him especially as I am a podcaster as he is too now. His interview skills are amazing and I think his growth shines through because he is living with purpose. Finally. ❤

Dan, on retreat sometimes the lyrics from the song by the Beatles "all you need is love," ring through to me. Great talk. In fact have been listening to 10% Nicer course on loving kindness with Sharon Salzberg on 10% Happier App.
May we all be safe, happy and peaceful, strong and healthy, and live our lives with ease.

We all our constantly projecting our inner world onto the outer. The thoughts, feelings, and behaviours we hold deep down about ourselves guide the way we treat and view others. Any person who is truly content with themselves wont feel the need to constantly prove their worth to others. Similarly, someone who is disappointed at their own lives would feel jealous of other's achievements, instead of being happy for the other (because they wish they had that happiness themselves).

Brilliant….an excellent summary of the second chapter of your life so far, and without one word wasted, how you reached your current plateau and most importantly how we can do it too.
