Focusing on the breath, noticing when you get distracted, and returning your focus to your breath, over and over again really is the basis of meditation. So I'm glad he got straight down to the basics of it. It's so simple, yet so powerful, and it doesn't cost a thing.

I never did it that way though. I have always found it much more helpful to let my mind wander off and see where it takes me. This is what gave me the most introspection on many past situations, why would you purposely suppress that?

    • @sanansa4567
      @sanansa4567 3 роки тому +4

@@notlisztening9821 because it depends on what you are meditating for (purpose). In my case I do get anxiety, panic attacks and insomnia. And I tried all kinds of meditation and nothing worked until I tried this method that Dan Harris talks about (other methods want you to use your mind: counting, breath in through nose and out through mouth in a specific rythym/counting, hold your one nostril and reverse, etc.)...those methods make my anxiety worse. By just focusing on your breath, it definately slows down my thoughts/relaxes my mind/gets rid of anxiety. If I let my mind wander, often the thoughts become very fragmented and axiety builds, insomnia ensues.

BRAVO DAN HARRIS!! Finally someone of mainstream media talking about things that really matter with human behavior. I have been unemployed since 2009 and have had tons of time on my hands and went down this road as well amongst other things. With my physical limitations, I'm re-inventing myself. Congrats, Dan you nailed it.

Dan Harris is one of The last GREAT 🇺🇸 American News Anchors. His voice is commanding and instills trust in the listener.
Idk about you, but there are NOT MANY people associated with ANY of (the ruthlessly backstabbing betraying and traitorous) media, that I would describe as honest, respectable, or beneficial to society but Dan Harris is one.
He has my respect for being straightforward and honest, transparent and willing to humble himself for the greater good.

It's generally recommended to sit on the floor, cross-legged and if the floor feels uncomfortably hard, on a cushion and keeping the back straight but not stiff. I've always found this too painful so I use a chair, couch or even lie in bed. I find meditating while sleepy unpleasant as well as difficult so I only do it when wide awake. Have tried many different sensations to concentrate on eg. the feeling of the breath on the nostrils but I don't seem to ever make much progress, have always had concentration problems. At present I am experimenting with breathing in while counting to 6, holding for a second, then breathing out while counting to 8, I think this rhythm calms the mind and produces a slight trance-like state. Good luck.

You know what I find Interesting? He considers this the most embarrassing day of his life, but from an unbiased outside perspective, i see this, and see a man who is stressed and needs a break. I feel compassion for this man, because when i see vulnerability, i cant help but feel empathy.
The negative voices in his head perceives that memory as incredibly embarrassing when, in reality it was just a cry out for help. and you just want to ask "are you okay?" in the simplest, most compassionate way possible...
I too, am so hard on myself and internalize things as if they were 100x more embarrassing, shameful and terrible than they actually are. Your inner thoughts and mentality really do warp your reality . so if I can get that under control maybe my warped sense of anxiety induced thoughts could see the actual reality of life... that your trying your best and that's all you can do

great piece. There is a reason the Gurus out there seem to come out with a book every other week, I think Depak is up to 55 or 56 books now. They don't want to help, they just know that there is a world of hungry hurting people out there that have money, they are more than happy to take the money. The real solution is simple and free. It isn't easy. But it is free. The best part about Dan Harris's book is that it openly shows how the self help industry is all about helping itself to the money of those who are emotionally vulnerable and frail. 10% happier is a good book and it is honest and isn't trying to scam anybody. Great work Dan!

My panic attacks ended eighteen years ago when a preacher told me to repeatedly tell myself, when I felt a panic attack coming on, that " there is nothing wrong, the enemy/devil is trying to trick me". I wasn't religious at the time but I did what he told me, and after the third or fourth time, my panic attacks ended and I have never had another one. I still have some anxiety, but no more panic attacks.
I really hope this helps someone.

What people need to realize is that there is no absolute cure for stress because it is a part of every day life. People say life is what you make it. The truth is its only half the equation. Things also happen in life beyond your control. Meditation can help you manage these stressors. Meditation is a product of constructive thinking which is the underlying principle of stress management and a happy life.

I am so glad I came across this. I seem to be afflicted with panic disorder stemming from stress and past experiences, and have have experienced exactly what you did on air, except in a class presentation several times. In interviews, presentations, meetings, even in one on one situations where I am put on the spot. Whats worse is I never used to be afraid of the spot light, in fact i loved it. I also relate to the internal voice driving me to achieve, which is good, but it can be highly critical, and I find myself questioning myself and my abilities all the time. Honestly even if this meditation doesn't help much, its good to know that Im not alone, and that people can recover and be stronger.

Went to the ER only to find a baffled doctor asking me dumb questions with no diagnosis. I had to learn what happened to me after the event subsided. It was like years of stress and anxiety finally came tumbling down on my system. %99 of the medical community has no clue how to deal with mental issues.

Was not able to work for 3 weeks; went back part time for 2 months; took a much needed vacation to family in my home country before I was able to go bank to work full time. I have been dealing with it since then. I am a mental health provider who let my clients know they are not alone & teach them practical ways to deal with anxiety & panic attacks. It can be debilitating, but there’s help out there. Meditation from what I understand is a powerful tool.

For those that bash him, the answers come when the student is ready. I think it was a pretty cool video. Quite frankly, no one should be judging. There is no way that is better. Just because you feel that jesus is your way, is no reason to bash him. I give him mad props for takin the time to share what worked.

Yoga nidra is one of the techniques I like for anxiety. And emotional support shares with people who can hold space for it without trying to fix or getting emotionally reactive or overwhelmed or scared by the intensity, who hold the vision you are resilient, capable, feeling your valid feelings, and will feel calmer after it passes. Who can gently and respectfully help you brainstorm baby steps that will help you feel more relaxed in healthy ways you consensually choose without them trying to control or dictate or force your choices and don't try to get you to shove down and bottle up or shame or fear your feelings. "Feel it to heal it," being with yourself lovingly, can deeply help. Parts work can be good for this - hearing, accepting, loving our inner parts and sensations.

I found that by breathing, deeply and slowly, from my stomach I can lower my blood pressure from 120/80 to 105/65. I don't think I feel any happier but my physiology somehow responds.

+John Barry That's where you went wrong. Breathing deep & slow is Pranayam and not Meditation, it has a thought behind it and that's what you want to avoid. Simply observe the natural flow of your uncontrolled breath. Also, remember Rome wasn't built in a day so wouldn't be a calm happy mind. It's a gradual process. To learn more about this form of meditation called Anapan visit www.dhamma.org/en/about/mini_anapana. You can also learn to practice it at any Vipassana Center. It's free and anyone irrespective of belief can practice it.

The inner voice he's referring to is years of expectations we establish in our thought process. For example, as a young adult you say in five years you'll become an IT manager that makes 100k while as hobbies learning languages and traveling around the world. The problem with this expectation is what happens if you don't exactly get this outcome? We tend to create linear expectations not recognizing the REALITY isn't linear and that expecting something so fixed will only bring you to have immense stress later in life. You focus so much on accomplishing this goal you actually slow yourself down every time you critisize yourself for an expectation you didn't fulfill. Even though you don't realize you're heading towards the destination but on a different track. Meanwhile, your friends have all graduated and have fiances or married while you're single. You don't go out because you've focused so much on yourself that your expectations buried you deep in your own depression.
The best way to get out of this is to understand expectations should give you flexibility. You can revise your expectation: In the next COUPLE years (instead of five) I'll want to be in a position in IT as a manager making much more than what I am right now (instead of giving an exact amount, ie 100k).
So never make such rigid expectations that it would bound to make you fail. Once this happens, you'll be living in the moment.
