✔Knife making - Handmade BACK LOCK FOLDING KNIFE w/ Stabilized Wood Handle

  • The first backlock folding knife we've made.
    No cnc was used in this build even though some say you need a cnc to make a folder :)
    This was without a doubt the most challenging project that we've worked on. There was a lot of filling and fitting of the mechanism, but we're pretty happy with the result. The knife is not perfect and has a couple of small errors, but it's just a prototype and we know exactly what to improve in the process to make it like we want it to be.
    The mechanism works pretty well and this is the strong part of the whole project. The defects are mainly aesthetical, the spacer could be fitted better and the small screws should be positioned further from the edge of the handle.
    We will also reduce the thickness of the spacer, the lock and the blade to 3.5 mm instead of 4.4 mm. This should significantly reduce the weight of the whole knife.
    With that said, this knife is not for sale, however we will make a couple improved pieces for sale soon 😊
    I hope you'll enjoy the video.

      I trust the durability, strength and leverage that can be attained from a fixed knife, but love the look and versatility of custom folding knives. lets face it though, a folding knife is suitable for majority of tasks!

    Hey, first of all great work! This is incredible.
    I was wondering what the best way to make the spring is and I couldn't find much on the internet. I see you guys have filed a very thin piece of spring steel, bent it to the desired shape, and then normalized/annealed/quenched it to return the elasticity of the strained metal?
    The procedure you used seems very complicated for me and I don't know the temperature/timing involved, so do you reckon there's a simpler way to do this that will still work properly? For example, does the spring need to be curved upwards in order to work effectively, or could it still do the job while it's straight?

    • @BarbershopCustoms
      @BarbershopCustoms  4 роки тому +1

      Yes, you have described the process correctly, just add temping in the end.
      It could work when it's straight, but you would need to design the mechanism differently and I think it's way harder to design it that way.

    At 11min 59 seconds you can see the knife won't work, the blade has already made contact with the spring holder and it hasn't even bottomed out against the lock lever. It would dull the knife every time you closed it. mabey you could grind down the spring holder but it doesn't look that way to me.

    Myself, I prefer folding knives, this knife looks really good, I'd like to get one some time, and as far as a cnc machine, yes it would be faster, but then in my opinion it wouldn't be a custom made knife ,that's just my opinion

    • @BarbershopCustoms
      @BarbershopCustoms  4 роки тому

      CNC gives you more precision, if a knife would be CNCed, but it would be one of a kind knife, it would still be a custom knife. It wouldn't be handmade anymore though :)

      @@BarbershopCustoms the mechanism could be cnc'ed but if the blade was cnc'ed I don't think I could consider it custom, as that could be easily replicated as many times as you wanted even if you finished it off with a belt sander and or hand sanded
