    Even veteran carvers can learn or re-learn from this video. Picked up something, "best to err on the outside" and "keep your router moving." As always, a great video!!!

    To carve those small letters free handed is a gift you have. Thing of beauty. I am in awe how well they came out. You do not need lay out letters when you can carve like this.

    Thanks guys! Watching these being cut is a HUGE bonus for me. This is a great video Eric. I appreciate your making it and showing us how it's done!!
    I am fixing to go out of town but when I got the message it was uploaded and ready to watch, I told my wife I was not leaving until I had watched it. LOL Can't wait to get home and practice these.
    Thanks again!

    Very interesting watching you 'practice' - easier to see what you are doing...and hearing why at the same time. Good camera work too, getting a closer look at the process, almost from the router handlers view. Most instructive, particularly the freestyle tiny letters at the beginning;- thanks for the insight (as well as the sight). These are great learning tools.

    Thanks Guys, I will try the Minwax Helmsman. The Krylon clear coat last great on the inside sign i made for my wife. The exterior address signs i made for my friends and myself did not withstand the winters in this area, i am testing laquer and poly spray this year. I have one more to refinish and i will try the Minwax Helmsman on it. Thanks Again Phil

    I learned a new trick the other day for paint spray can, stain can, etc. If you know you have paint left in a can but no air left , you can pop the top off, put an old tire valve on the tip, you'll hear it click fill it with compressed air no more than 20psi, put the cap back on and keep using the paint thats left in the can. This can help stretch the life of your consumables.

    I just did some very small letters with the carving liner at 1/8”. Most of the letters came out pretty nice except for maybe an A and a P. Would it be better to run the 60 degree at 1/32” instead? BTW, great to hear your Dad’s voice! Best part of the video!

    • @oldave100
      @oldave100  2 роки тому +1

      On small inset letters remember to go the correct direction when it comes to the middle parts. Meaning treat the inside of the A and the P as an outset piece, especially if you are working with a chippy board. Always go counterclockwise on small outset pieces. I'm sure this sound confusing. I have had this come up a few time lately so I will do a video on this subject soon. I wouldn't use the 60 degree bit that shallow. You'll lose most of it when you sand. If not the carving liner, I would use the profile bit.

    Speaking of colors I just went out to buy some black primer and wouldn't you know HD was sold out, must have been watching you! I ended up with a dark reddish brown, will check it out later. I also am in AZ, good tip about the fridge for our paint.

    Good info guys Just wondering how long do your signs last out side before they have to be refinished, i live in Maine and my signs only last about one year then i have to refinish them. Phil Alley

  • @oldave100
    @oldave100  9 років тому

    Phil, not sure why your finish is only lasting a year. Maybe the individual areas where the sign is. I know I've had lots of signs go up into cool weather areas and while a finish in extreme weather areas won't last forever it should go a few years. For extreme weather I normally use the Minwax Helmsman even though it's 2 times the price of the Krylon. Hope this helps.

    Very good "point" (pun) about setting many of the difficult letters up for continual practice practice practice. Everyone has a technique and that is the place to hone them (I was waiting to see the "e" just kidding). Nice work Eric. Very nice! How do you get rid the little ridge that's left deep inside the cut? Or just leave it? Dave did an excellent job staying focused and on you while you cut! Exceptional videography Dave!!

      MRrwmac Thank you for the great comments. I ran out of time & I forget the E's. I always use a stiff brush & air on all the carving before I spray.

    Hi Eric - great video as usual - I guess I missed one of your videos - when you first started you had a spray - was that stencil ink or paint. I know that you usually use stencil ink - but it seemed that you were indicating another type of product.

    In my previous comment, I may not have asked the question correctly. When he was cutting the letters with the v bit or other similar bit, It leaves a little ridge down in the bottom of the wider cuts. How do you clear those out or do you just leave them since they are deep in the cut?

    • @oldave100
      @oldave100  9 років тому

      MRrwmac Yes I just leave those there. I like a little texture down inside the letter. The same as I like texture around the letters when I carve them Outset. Some people like flat bottom, but I'd rather leave some texture. Thank You

      So what do you do when a customer changes their mind about what they want on the sign, right in the middle of the project. board cut to size and the routing is in it's first stages. #@&^%$*@. Start over and let them know it'll take a little longer, I have other people that are wanting signs too.... I think I opened the dam flood gates.... People !!!!

    This is great.
    I will like to ask can you turn off the router when you talk. I have a hearing aid and they pick all kind of noise. They are not as selective as the normal hearing. The router noise makes your voice very hard to hear. I am still able to make up what you are saying but without the extra noise, it will be better. I know you have already done a ton of videos and that may not be possible but maybe for future videos. I am sure there are some others that may have my same situation and will appreciate it.
    I have recently started to learn this skill and I watch (or trying to watch) all your videos. I have to say they are a jewel to learn a lot of the details required to do this kind of work.
