So glad I watched this video again, I was never thinking depth VS size of letter. Makes sense and ready to try the new way instead of following the black outline. It pays to watch your videos more than once as just like a movie, what you don't hear or see the 1st time watching you will pick up next time!
I started out with the DW 618 and was using it for everything. Had heard you mention using the 611 for inset letters and with the profile bit. Finally bought the 611 and using it with the profile bit. It’s a game changer!! It’s so much easier and comfortable with the profile bit/611 combo. As usual, you were right. And getting the base plate goes without saying.
Super video explained very well. I enjoy all of you videos and looking forward to the next one. Every sign or picture I cut is because of your videos. Thanks a million.
Wow! Sure glad I watched this one. Also glad that I bought some of your suggested bits. I can see that the profiler bit will be much better to use for raised letters than A 60 deg end mill bit. I'm also glad that I ordered your clear bases for my 2 routers. I'll be using your depth gauge since I don't have the experience to "eye ball" it yet. Your videos are good examples to show that you have to have the particular tool for the particular job. It's nice that you have those tools available for sale, too. THANKS!
So glad I watched this video, I was using my profile for all letters, My 60 degree will hopefully get here today. Excellent video as always. I am finding it helps to watch all video's twice.
Hello, Do you used the 'trim" router because its not as powerful and doesn't jerk and move around alot in the wood? I've noticed with my full size router that it likes to move a lot when i'm trying to make cuts even when its not that deep. Thinking a trim router would be a great investment for sign making. Also with your router base plates you sell would it be possible to buy one without router mounting holes? I have a different router than what your plates except and would like to drill holes for it to fit mine. Thanks for the great content, Dylan!!
Hi Dave. My name is Charlie. I'm new to this sign routing. I gave it a go a couple of weeks ago just to see what I could do and it was okay for a first try but then I saw a few of your videos and I'm really impressed with what you do and how you show and explain things. One question though. The bit you use in your router? I can not find one like that on any sites. Is it something special you have ad made. I would love to have one. Problem is I live in Australia! That's right you have a fan down under. Can you help me with getting a router bit like the one you use? Regards Charlie
Hi Charlie, thank you so much for watching, we very much appreciate it. All of the router bits we use we have available on our website.... makeawoodsign.com under "Sign Carving Supplies". We actually have a few fans and students down under. Very excited to have another, so thank you. For international shipping just contact Vickiwithdavesigns@gmail.com and let her know what you want to order and she'll figure out the shipping charges for you. If you have any other questions I can help you with let me know eric@makeawoodsign.com. Thank you again....
Hi Dave, excellent videos! If you were to router multiple depths for highlighting and or accenting, is there a particular sequence you would use? For example 3 layer depths, not much different in the layer thicknesses. What is the average thickness for sign stock?
I do carve multiple depths often. I always carve the shallowest (finest detail) first. Average thickness for my signs is approx 3/4". Although some small ones are close to 1/2" and bigger ones are close to 1 1/2" thick. Thank you for watching and you can always email me directly if you have more questions eric@makeawoodsign.com.
Hi, I purchased your acrylic base for my Dewalt 611. Unfortunately, I have not used it, the router drill bits I bought in the U .S. are metric. The router can not take bits but 1/4 inch. Is there any attachment I could buy, or a jacket to put in the bits?. Greetings from South America. Hugo.
I can and do once in a while, however I like the look of having a texture in the background. Just personal preference. Thank you John for watching, Eric
To be honest, we've had that for 20+ years so I don't know. I have seen different ones at Harbor Freight though, and there's always Amazon. Hope this helps. Thank you, Eric
There are a ton of router bits for sale. My question is if the package doesn't say 60 degree or 90 degree, how do I tell which is which when I buy a bit at HD or my local hardware store?
+Chris Gibson If they aren't labeled as to what the angle is then I would ask somebody in that department in the store. Maybe they can look it up for you. That should work. Thank you, Eric
Hi Dave im a 38 year father my dauther is 4 and i want to do a wood frame with the school name about 16 x 10 and i want to know what i have to have to do this project i went buy a router a portal cable 1100 yiu have any suggestions. Thank you
That looks like a good router and it will certainly work but I prefer smaller palm routers like the porter cable 450. When setting up to carve the frame I would definitely set it up in some kind of jig or clamp it down for more control. Kind of like I did on #272 & #273. If I can answer any other specific questions for you email me eric@makeawoodsign.com
vtxrider1800r Not sure which part you're talking about. When I do small outset letters I will make my first cut for the detail Then a second cut deeper so give me a buffer space around the detail so I don't have to get so close to the letter with my backround bit. I hope this helps. If not let me know. Thank you, Eric
Dave Rhoten First off, I like to say how much I've learned from your videos. As a beginner they are fantastic. What I meant is the when you go inside an E or a better yet an O, you don't do it twice like at 26:28. I was making the inside of letters the same depth as the clean out. Another question I had is you have different depths for each size letter. If a sign has two lines of different size letters as in the case of the one I'm making now, what do you recommend? Go with the biggest? If that sounds picky you should see my pile of firewood from being picky. Thanks
vtxrider1800r Thank you for the nice comment. Glad our videos are helping you. Ok on this video I cut 3 E's 1", 1 1/2", & 2". Because I can't go as deep on the 1" that one I make 2 cuts on so I'm less likely to knick it with the clean up bit. I go deeper (up to about 1/4") the bigger the letter is. Remember my bits are v groove. Meaning the deeper you go the wider the line. If you have different size letters on the same sign you would adjust the depth (width) for each size letter. Picky is good, but remember this is a FREEHAND sign. You will probably allot more critical then you customer. Just keep at it & you'll get better with each sign. Thank you. Hope this helps, Eric
Hi, Funny how one can pick up tips YOU "give away" without " you " realizing it. Fantastic and free !!! I'm in the middle of doing a batch of 20 or so for local craft shop (wish me luck). If it wasn't for you guys they would probably be getting Tea Cakes !!! Great vids..... Thank you. Keep up the great work you two !
MrRichot That's great, 20 or so signs. Nice order! Glad we could help. Love to hear success stories. Thank you for the kind words, we really appreciate them.
These "basic" instruction videos are a great resource... especially for newer wood sign carvers.
Glad you like them Bob. Thank you for watching and the kind words...

newbie here, when you are cleaning out why don't you fully clean out all the wood?
I can and do once in a while, however I like the look of having a texture in the background. Just personal preference. Thank you John for watching, Eric

You're very welcome. If you have any other questions you can email me directly eric@makeawoodsign.com. Thanks again
Where did you get your caliper with the depth guage?
To be honest, we've had that for 20+ years so I don't know. I have seen different ones at Harbor Freight though, and there's always Amazon. Hope this helps. Thank you, Eric

where do you get your glasses
A friend gave them to me. But there are all kinds of Magnifiers on Amazon.
One other question on the bits, when would use use a spiral bit???
I use the Spiral upcut for cutting shapes or for flat background.
Another informative video. Thank you
Thank you Jim, happy to help.
