    Alright, so we're going to talk about adjusting brakes. These are V-brakes. These are pretty common on hybrid bikes, city bikes or mountain bikes. The concept of adjusting them is pretty much the same as all the other brakes, just some minor changes. A lot of people have a lot of problems with their brakes squeaking and that's a very easy adjustment to fix. Basically what it means is your brakes are pretty worn, so you want to replace the pads. You can see on the actual pads that there's a wear line on most of them. So if it's past the wear line, or if it's wearing incorrectly you want to replace them. This is a quick release right here.
    You're going to push these two levers together, push down on this piece here and it opens them up. So you can see the pads and see how they're worn, and you may just need to replace them. They're pretty inexpensive. They go anywhere from four to fifteen dollars a pair, so it's definitely worth replacing them. It's a big safety issue. So to correct the squeaking, if they are new brakes, you'll need to toe in the brakes. Brakes aren't meant to hit completely flat on a bicycle rim and that's what creates the squealing. So the squeaking noise comes from when the brakes hit completely flat, so toeing in, just imagine your toes going in.
    So basically, this is very dramatic, but when the brakes hits, the one side hits and goes down, and eventually hits the whole thing, they flex. You can kind of hear the squeaking on this, because the brake pads are completely flat. So what you're going to do is take your five mm Allen and unscrew the brake. You can see how it kind of shifts all over the place, it goes up and down, side to side, it basically pivots on these washers. So you're going to toe in the brake. It doesn't have to be really drastic, it doesn't have to be like that, but just enough to get rid of the squeaking and so that it brakes properly. Make sure it's hitting the rim really nice, so it's nice and level to the rim.
    Also make sure it's not too low or too high. If it's too high, it's going to hit the tire and could potentially blow up a tire from all the friction and heat. If it's too low, it's just not going to brake on the surface properly and you're not going to be able to stop quickly enough.
    So let me just bolt these pads, and then we'll see if it makes any noise. So now it's nice and quiet, no more squeaking. It's also going to brake a little better. But you can see how, if I spin the wheel slowly, it stops. The reason for that is it could be either too tight, or it could be mis-adjusted.

    The only video I found that actually explains the cause of the squeak. My front brakes are much better now. Kudos.

    As a hiker who shares the trails with bikers, squealing brakes have saved my bacon many times.

    My bike gave me lot of trouble with brakes as in i pressed the brakes very hard but the bike didn't stop a bit so i watched this video and a idea popped up. In the video i heard that the brake pads can be worn out and it should be replace with a new pair but i was short of money so i put 2 wider rubber bands around the pad for emergency purpose and it worked. If any of you don't have time to buy one instantly just use the rubber bands temporarily it works great!

      +great604 under braking pressure the rubber bands could be ripped off the brake pad leaving u less brakes & too much slack in cable adjustment,bad idea,i wouldn't try this for the sake of your own safety :(

    Brake blocks, pads are for disc brakes! maybe swap the blocks over? they wont be flat against the wheel but they will wear quickly to fit snug, I will try it today.

    i like mine squealing... it scares the animals away from me and let other people know that im coming. its like my own air horn...but i guess i can call it air squeal. be optimistic... sure thing it is weird, but its just a minor thing that doesnt hurt anyone. rather the break works and let people...or animals know that you are coming.

    how did you cause the pads to toe in..you skipped that

    • @OjStudios
      @OjStudios 10 років тому

      Toe in can be made with piece of paper folded few times or a rubber band of some sort to the back of the pad. That way the front of the pad touches rim first and the squek goes away, hopefully, if that's the case. You put the paper or rubberband there, squeeze from the handle, tighten the pad and you're on your way in no time!

      @neilfroggycrompton2466 8 років тому

      +golyg place a coin between the brake pad & the rim with the brakes applied,loosen the pad's bolt & allow the front part to turn inwards & then do up the bolt ensuring that the front part is turned inwards :)

    So...you are demonstrating with your hands that we should adjust the pads so that the top of the pad contacts the wheel before the bottom of the pad does.

    my bike isnt new i have had it for 2 years and it squeaks REALLY LOUD but now i will try this i just dont know why it took 2 years normally they squeak when new

    • @neilfroggycrompton2466

      +Epicpiggy try scuffing the face of the brake pads with sand paper to remove the shine from the pads wear surface,clean up the dust & test ride,if that doesn't work replace the brake pads front & back so that u have even braking :)

    Omg guys don't buy Walmart bikes unless you plan on sinking a few bucks into upgrading several parts. But def the braking system. I've got 30 miles on my Walmart Roadmaster and the brakes are already completely shot. No amount of adjusting is fixing the issues.

      *Update*
      Since this post I returned that pos bike and bought a 15 year old Schwinn mt. bike. I had to sink about $80 in to it and I bought it for $20. Which totals to $100 which is what the Walmart Roadmaster costs. It's easily 5 times what the cheap Roadmaster is. All I did was scrub it up, bought two new rims and tires set, new front brakes, threw all my gadgets on it and it's actually a decent bike! The brakes can be adjusted and best of all they don't squeal! Not even a little bit ;)
      Purchased the bike using the app Letgo. Only thing that I don't like is that it's a 26" instead of a 29er. But oh well, it's much better quality so I'll deal with riding around on a kids bike for now.
