I had a college professor named H. Craig Collins at St. John's University in the early 1980's, WW II vet and retired NYPD. He was a sergeant in the NYPD and from 1970-1973 was head of the city's gang unit, reporting directly to the mayor of NY. He wrote a book about the gangs of that time period in NYC, especially the Bronx. They all wore vests - "colors"- to identify themselves. Pretty much non-existent by 1979, but what a cool flick this was.
In Chicago,in the 60’s-80’s all the gangs had sweaters that had their respective colors. They used to fight and kill each other for stealing each other’s sweaters. They stopped wearing them because they were open targets from rival gangs and police.
@@timmycrw91 That sounds like a modern day version of Herbert Asbury's Gangs Of New York published in 1920. I would like to read it, do you remember the name of his book?

This movie simultaneously ended the 70s movie era and kickstarted 80s cinema in one fell swoop. This movie was 80s cool years and years before Miami Vice.
One of the best intros to any movie. The characters and their personalities are introduced, as well as the length of their journey. Movies today could take some lessons from this.
This was a great way to give expose, basically have the characters interviewing each other allowing the viewer to be introduced to both the plot and the characters before the movie even starts
Worlds better than someone coming out and explaining everything in one speech. The actors deliver how serious the meeting is going to be and how they're going to uphold the pact.
The cinematography in this movie was incredible, and this intro was absolutely amazing, the music, the lighting, the text font it’s jus iconic… have always loved this movie, I remember playing the game as a kid too and having to spray paint the warriors tag on certain spots, ah the nostalgia
I like how much the intro showing main 9 members of the Warriors kinda captures their characters that would be expanded upon later in the game. Cleon and Swan are the no-nonsense leaders, Ajax being the crass "one track mind" muscle, Rembrandt being the artist, Snow being as cool as his nickname gives, Cochise saying that Cyrus is "magic", Cowboy being very sensitive about his Stetson, Fox being the observant one and Vermin being the comic-relief.
When this masterpiece came out in '79, it was only shown a few times in my city. It got a bad reputation for causing fights and general chaos. It's still my favorite movie of all time. If you liked this, try another '70s classic called "Vanishing Point". It's got a killer ending.
Doesn't help that they got actual gang members for the Cyrus speech as extras to fill the crowd. Supposedly they got real into the Cyrus speech which is why the cheers are so lively

My dad had recorded this film on a VHS tape back in the day. I must have honestly been about 4 or 5 when I first watched it and I would watch it over and over again. The opening music with the wonder wheel gives me ultra nostalgia. The bathroom fight scene is so epic!
Saw this on HBO in 1980, and was so taken aback by the portrayal of NYC, youths and the unspoken way of the street that this suburban boy could only witness. Epic.

saw the whole movie for the first time at a friends house on a Thursday afternoon. All that I can say about this movie is that it’s by far one of the best things that I have ever saw in my life. I have no regrets watching it 10/10
my dad had the intro as his ringtone when i was growing up. finally watched the movie when i was 16 and have been in love ever since. i always watch clips or the movie itself when i miss my dad
Likewise. My dad sat with me and watched it when I was a kid and every now n again we'd sit and watch it together. He's gone now ... I have the dvd under the TV. I may pop it in and give it a re watch soon for old times sake
This movie is inspired by Xenophon's 'Anabasis' the true story of 10,000 Greek mercenary warriors who had to fight their way back through Persian controlled anatolia after their leader died they had to fight all sorts of tribes on their way back home to Greece and as soon as they saw their Coney Island (home) which were the Greek controlled coastal areas by the sea, the surviving Greek warriors cried out THALATTA! Which means sea in Greek. Even the names Ajax (Greek warrior)Cyrus ,(persian king) pay homage to the original events. Very cool stuff!
Rest in peace to my mother for showing me such a classic, it was a true bonding moment watching this movie, my dance team even did this movie as a theme, it’s here on UA-cam under the title “THROWBACK SHOW 2015 CLIP 5”…… RIP REMBRANDT AND COCHISE
Looking back on this movie one has to be impressed by the ambitious nature of this film. The costume designer alone is the real hero of this movie each gang had su h a distinct look the number of extras needed for the big meeting alone must have been a nightmare to pull off.
Great point and this is all pre-CGI,so they had to do everything for real. The sheer logistics of setting everything up couldn't have been fun. I don't know if they used any matte paintings in the movie, though.Matte paintings were used in a lot of movies prior to CGI and some movies even still use them today but they're usually digital matte paintings instead of the hand-painted ones of old.
Cleon: It's still on and we're goin'. Cyrus sent an emissary this afternoon to make sure. Now, Cyrus don't want anybody packed and he don't want anybody flexing any muscle. So, I gave him my word that the Warriors would uphold the truce.
Awesome intro even by today's standards. Cinematic, builds tension, introduces characters and gangs and advances the plot and it's all done through the opening credits. Amazing.
One of the most underrated movies. What makes it even more amazing was that the entire film was shot at night in keeping with the theme. Amazing job by everyone involved.
What makes the warriors so great? The meaning - the meaning of the movie an the novel is so deep. Just study it and you'll agree that this is one of the best movies ever made.

saw the whole movie for the first time at a friends house on a Thursday afternoon. All that I can say about this movie is that it’s by far one of the best things that I have ever saw in my life. I have no regrets watching it
10/10
I saw this movie in New Zealand in 1979 it's still one of my favorites, I have my own copy and never get sick of it :)
Thank you big sis for showing me this movie at the age of 7 in 1993
I also thank my big bros for showing me this at age 6 in 2006. This movie’s so legendary that even my parents grew up watching this
This movie was a masterpiece and too good for it's time
The movie is to good for today. Its not mainstream and never was appreciated on a mass scale
The movie is off the hook.
It IS the hook!

im 13 and my dad made me discover this film when i was 10, absolute masterpiece
my dad had the intro as his ringtone when i was growing up. finally watched the movie when i was 16 and have been in love ever since. i always watch clips or the movie itself when i miss my dad
Likewise. My dad sat with me and watched it when I was a kid and every now n again we'd sit and watch it together. He's gone now ... I have the dvd under the TV. I may pop it in and give it a re watch soon for old times sake
One of the best marriages of scenery and music, perfectly building up tension and keeping pace. The music is truely the unsung hero in this movie.
One of my fav gangsta movies truly iconic and badass 🖤
Yeah it is
This movie is inspired by Xenophon's 'Anabasis' the true story of 10,000 Greek mercenary warriors who had to fight their way back through Persian controlled anatolia after their leader died they had to fight all sorts of tribes on their way back home to Greece and as soon as they saw their Coney Island (home) which were the Greek controlled coastal areas by the sea, the surviving Greek warriors cried out THALATTA! Which means sea in Greek.
Even the names Ajax (Greek warrior)Cyrus ,(persian king) pay homage to the original events. Very cool stuff!
Love this film, one of the first i ever watched on vhs
So, I gave him my word that the Warriors would uphold the truce.
katastar i love that part when Cleon says that
Now everybody says that Cyrus is the one and only. I think we’d better go have a look for ourselve 👌
Slayer Hippy a small but memorable performance by Dorsey Wright(Cleon) now age 62.
jim68 I wonder how it would’ve played out for the character had he not left for that other movie role.
chingaso316LOST Play the ps2 and Xbox video game of the warriors cleon had a bigger part in the game fighting the other gangs.
Who wouldnt like to be a Warrior? They lived the most epic aventure ever!
Clean’s screen time is so limited yet precious. 😢he is a good leader and decent guy
Check the deleted scenes, he’s in a good majority of them
"what do you know about cyrus?.. magic whole lotta magic" Love this movie.
When you're the president of the biggest gang in the city you don't have to take shit.
2020 e ainda me arrepio com essa introdução. Melhor filme de todos os tempos!
I've never seen this movie in this high quality before! Would love to see it again in this resolution.
Might be the most nostalgic intro of any film ever. It’s literally perfection. I pray they never try to remake this classic
What makes the warriors so great? The meaning - the meaning of the movie an the novel is so deep. Just study it and you'll agree that this is one of the best movies ever made.
One of the best opening scenes in cinema
Listening to the theme song makes it physically impossible to not walk like you own whatever place you happen to be walking in.
My dad inteoduced me to this movie and i fell in love with it. Im 21 now and would love to see a movie that takes place in this world the warriors were created in. But the way hollywood is these days i dont want them to destroy and disinterest me in the worlds these classic movies created. E.g (" Star wars") and everyother remake, remaster and sequel thats shat out these days just to profit off the original classic, great films that were made years ago
One of the all time classics Dublin ireland
