  • The new adventure year commences with an addition to the fleet, a 2021 Winnebago Revel, which is a four-wheel drive Class B RV based on the Mercedes Sprinter 144. This episode highlights our experiences with the van immediate after taking deliver, and then I provide a general overview of the platform's core merits. I answer the question, "Why the Winnebago Revel?" and explain what role it will play in forthcoming adventures.

Hey Chris, thank your for all the adventures you have given us, regardless of your life choices, like what you ate, where you went, and whom you were overlanding with. But please, accept that the magic and all the adventure’s story telling were possible due to a key element, the old reliable Jeep. Please don’t abandon the channels identity. I’m sure that’s a great van but for a different type of audience. Cheers and happy 2021.

It seems, from what he said, that he's going to use it as a home base. Explore with the Jeep during the week. relax in the van on his weekends while he produces the videos and such.

Not sure why some of you are so negative. Chris is an adult and is entitled to have a relationship. This is about adventure and that includes who he brings into his life. Orangie is still here for the duration. Sit back and enjoy the adventure that Chris has planned for us this year!

After living in the Jeep for 4 years, I certainly understand wanting more room, especially if Chris now has a travel partner. And this van is impressive. But vanlifers are a dime a dozen on UA-cam. One of the things I liked about Chris's videos were they were different. He could get into areas many vehicles could not. And he did it alone. I'm pretty much a lone traveler myself so I could really relate. Every vehicle is a compromise. I will look forward to his new adventures in the van. But I will miss the Jeep.

I've been following Chris for years and bought my first Jeep in 2019 after watching many of his adventures. Last year we added a small adventure trailer to our kit because we needed more space than what a Wrangler can provide. I understand his decision and support it. Now he can ditch all that heavy gear in Orangie and really go places he couldn't before. It's time to introduce your fellow traveler though as you cant drive 2 vehicles alone.

Hey FYI, a good friend had one of these, two months into it this summer the thing burned to the ground. He was driving down the road, saw smoke, got out and the thing burned to a shell in about 10 minutes. An exhaust flange in the turbo started a fire which ignited the magnesium steering column. Once that thing lit, nothing was able to stop the fire. It’s nuts and thankfully his kids weren’t in there with him. Mercedes/Winnebago has a recall on that turbo exhaust flange supposedly so make sure it got it done. Mercedes has been giving him the run around and not reimbursing him so far and it’s been ugly legally. This guy is who we got our Sportsmobile from and has been an off-road van guy for 20 years. Regardless to say, I would look into that if I were you. He had less than 10k miles on it at that point. Cool rig for sure just wanted to give you a heads up.

    • @Raazorred1

Why would Winnebago have anything to do with the turbocharger and was the RV not insured?

    • @Kristian_Saile
      @Kristian_Saile 3 роки тому +3

Buzz M it was insured, but there was a recall on it and Winnebago didn’t do the recall in the period of time from where they took the van and did the conversion. By the time the van was converted was something like 1 year after the chassis itself was constructed from what I understand. I don’t know all the details but the important part is that there is a known defect specific to his 2020 Rebel that caused it to burn quickly. Not sure what dates of manufacture it involves.

Why is everyone always so mad about change? This is not a TV program, this is the real-life of a human that chooses to share it online. It will eventually have some change. Living in an SUV full-time can't be sustained forever. Chris did a great job bringing us along while adventuring and exploring for a long time in his Jeep and I think he found a great compromise to continue exploring with some much-needed comfort. Also "happiness only real when shared" so I'm happy he found a partner to share what I think are the best experiences in life. I'm also surprised about the cost of the van, I knew 4x4 Sprintes where expensive but I thought you could get away with half of that. I'm sure Chris chose wisely and finding one that you can finance and have dealers and service along the US is not easy so this might be the best option.

Doing the same thing over and over for years ceases to be stimulating and inspiring. A willingness to change, explore new options, learn new things, and face new challenges is a big part of what drives creativity. It is also perfectly understandable to desire a little more space and comfort than the interior of a Jeep can provide as one's entire home. I would be willing to bet every naysayer is living in a house or apartment that is many times larger than even the Revel, and would be entirely unable to live full-time in the Jeep they nonetheless expect you to keep living in. Congratulations Chris! Enjoy!
Those of you who are "disappointed" or whatever, here's another way to look at it: without increased comfort and a new vehicle experience to explore, perhaps Chris would stop doing this altogether, and we'd all be deprived of the beautiful and entertaining videos he produces for us all to watch for free every week. I enthusiastically support anything Chris needs to do to keep himself engaged in the channel and be happy to be doing it. I look forward to watching how Chris and friend will evolve their approach to living, exploring and sharing all these beautiful places with us.

Not sure if someone else already answered, but induction cooking is a simple concept. Just like a lightbulb or a resistor get hot when an electric current is applied, an induction cooktop uses magnetism to induce an electric current in your pan's base plate. Your pan is what gets hot, not the surface of the cooktop. It's very efficient, no open flame and you can use anything that has a magnetic base to cook with. Only down side is that you need some electricity. There have been some studies that warn people with pacemakers to stray away from induction, but those are extreme case I think. Love the new ride. Will be fun to watch you wench it out of the mud in a coming episode.

Chris, you said you wanted a home base to go to at the end of the week, which I totally understand, but 185k would pay for alot of motels/hotels/airbnb/etc without the expense of upkeep. My concern is that you basically live on others disposable income. The economy goes really bad, your income will likely dwindle, will you be able to afford the 185k home base (which is quickly depreciating i might add). Also, try selling an expensive RV in a depressed economy. You will take a huge hit.
Your channel is my absolute favorite on yt. I started watching it last year and watched every episode. I was living vicariously through you. I could literally put myself into every episode. One way I believe you can separate yourself from other van owners is through your off-road experience. You already proved that with your quick list improvement suggestions. Most van people are just adding option after sponsored option to their vans, not really solving problems. On the induction stove. Cast iron works marvelously. I bought all my cast iron pots and pans or roughly a dollar piece at yard sales. I find them coated with rust. And usually the lady says it's just a pile of junk. I buy them soak them in vinegar and then wash them clean and season them. They were great on an induction stove. If you need more storage you might consider using a trailer and put your Jeep on top and boxes on the side.

After four jears in the Jeep, you really have walked your way up to the Sprinter 4x4. I hope you will fall in love with it like you did with the Jeep. I wish you and the Lady at your side always save travels. All the best from Germany

I'm excited for the new chapter of your chanel. Dont worry about the haters, you're doing what you love and still paying less than us suckers with permanently parked mortgages. Keep up the adventure!
I don't real know anything about using induction but I think if you grab a magnet you can use it to find compatible pot and pan...

Except that your house is more than likely increasing in value while a van ? Not so much. To each his own though.

Cant lie, im going to miss the simple aspects of this series..the makeshift grilled cheeses, the exploring of the primitive back country unplanned and on the cheap, adding the 200k Mercedes and a partner changes everything. You have paid your dues for sure, and deserve it, but it does change the channel almost completely. we will see...

I agree with your statement and am also going to continue to watch. I love the Jeep and the scenery but there are a lot of tubers doing that. They get me for a video or two and then I forget about them. It is Chris that makes this enjoyable and with all the work he has put in, he has earned this. I am optimistic that having a nice van an a “lil sumpin sumpin” won’t change the authentic guy we watch every week. Still, not thrilled though lol.

Flexibility is the key to happiness in what you are doing. Being fully committed to minimalism is laudable, but I have to believe overshoots the mark. A balance of minimalism (the Jeep), moderation (the Revel) and treating yourself to an occasional lodge will not only be more satisfying to you, it will bring some diversity in content that may appeal to a broader market. Congrats on the new rig, and best wishes for the new year.

Chris congrats on the van! Some of your followers are taken aback by this new twist, but life is all about evolution and change. I've only been following you for a few months, but that's enough to have seen you muse often about more creature comforts in a mobility platform. You've camped out of your Jeep for 4 years and more than earned your stripes. You're allowed to settle down a little! Whatever you're driving, your spirit for adventure will continue to be interesting and unique, and your videos will continue to bring us along as an adventure partner. I'm happy that you are finding more fullness and growth in your journey as a father and as a significant other in someone's life. How awesome she shares your interests!

It seems like a lot of "you-tubers" in the overland and off-grid world are going a different route. The Revel in this case, full size RAMs, less capable Gladiators (JT) over Wranglers, and even to less outfitted Tacomas. Is this craze over? I understand that this is the first episode on this channel and that the orange Jeep is over 2000 miles away and we should give everyone a chance being that we are watching their channels, but maybe the Jeep overland deal has moved on, maybe everyone is just getting older? Thanks for sharing and good luck with the 4 wheel drive van!

Well, minimalistic is all nice and dandy, but it's also uncomfortable. I tow a small offroad trailer simply because I want a useable kitchen, a heater and a decent mattress. For me that setup works but I sure wouldn't want to live in it full time. If I ever go full time I will buy something that can tow my Jeep, establish a base-camp and use the Jeep to explore. I would not do the 2 vehicle setup, although that has advantages in remote areas. If one vehicle breaks down you still have another one to get help.

I think I've seen every video and ad for the Revel and absolutely love it; I can also understand Winnebago's capitalizing on the demand but they went a bit overboard. I think it's great you decided to travel more comfortably whether you did it for yourself or your new companion; either way it's absolutely none of our business. I continue to watch your videos as otherwise I would not have those wonderful images of the back roads in my memory banks. Happy New Year and good luck to you !!

I've owned an RV dealership and two campgrounds and RV companies aren't known for their quality. Hope this works out for you and your problems are minimal but there will be problems. Don't get rid of the Jeep. But then again it's your life. Do what makes you happy.

Good luck. I think you could get a functional equivalence with a towed trailer such as a Scamp or Casita. Not offroad capable, but as good as a van with all the creature comforts and no extra driveline. Vans, though expensive are ideal if you are constantly on the move. If you leave it parked a week at a time, a trailer is a less expensive option.
