ecoflow delta 2 with extra battery first impressions

  • Just hooked up and set up my ecoflow Delta 2 and the extra battery.
    The stiff 8 AWG extra battery cable makes placement of the power station and battery a little awkward. Do not plug in/unplug the 8 gauge charging connection cable while the two units are on. There was no issue when I connect the newly received extra battery that only had a 30% charge to the fully charged main power station.
    The main selling points of this power station is Lithium iron phosphate battery chemistry, high capacity, relative safety, longevity, good warranty, versatility and turnkey operation. You noticed that I haven't included quick recharging in the main selling points. While this option is great when you need it, it is probably the reason why you have the high velocity fans and the eventual demise of the electronics inside. A car capable of a top speed of 180 mph doesn't mean it's good to drive at that speed.
    Unlike modified sine wave gas generators, the Delta 2 has a pure sine wave inverter that won't damage your appliances or heating system control boards. Since most small home use generators are not grounded, you can have issues you won't experience until you try to use the unit. When the AC outlets on the generator are used in a wet environment, you have to use caution as there is no GFCI protection.
    Remember to register your warranty and get eco points to get discounts for future purchase.
    If you are using the Delta 2 to run your heating system, you can extend the run time by doing this:

    Question. Given then the extra battery is worth almost as much as a delta 2. Can you just buy two delta 2s and hook them up together just like an external battery?

    • @wtam69
      @wtam69  Рік тому +1

      The extra battery is about $100 cheaper. You can probably hook two Delta 2 together so one feeds the other. I could be wrong but the extra battery is dedicated to the main unit and therefore more efficient. The downside is you cannot charge the extra battery by itself. You have to charge it in conjunction with the Delta 2. That being said, charging the Delta 2 with the extra battery is probably quicker and simpler than charger two separate Delta 2s.

      It’ll be shared but won’t be exactly equally shared. Even within one battery, the cells will become unbalanced despite the Efforts of the BMS.

      Try resetting the BMS. Press power on button, then turn off. Turn on and hold button until you see the battery percentage button. Also try updating firmware if it’s not the latest. Remember to charge battery within the parameters. Get someone qualified to find and disconnect and reconnect BMS inside the casing.

      Haven’t heard this issue before. If there’s any firmware updates, you can update and see what happens. These all in one units are much more complicated than the diy units where you can separate out each component to troubleshoot issues.

      It started when I updated the firmware a few weeks ago. Up until then it was simply a back up power source, but I added a second 300 W solar panel and started powering my refrigerator and Separate freezer. For no reason I can find it will randomly shut off, sometimes under solar power, but also under grid power. nothing consistent except that it’s usually about every day or two. It will shut down. But only when I’ve got the extra battery connected otherwise it’s perfect.

    Would it be possible to connect 2 Delta2 together to get double power, ... then you can also use both separable, charge them separable. Now you are limited with the extra battery as it only can be used tooled up to the Delta2

    • @wtam69
      @wtam69  Рік тому

      You can charge one delta 2 with another but it’ll be cheaper to use one delta 2 and an extra battery to extend run time. You are right in your scenario in that you have two power stations and therefore more versatile. I have many battery kits already so I don’t need more individual units. It depends on your needs.

    • @NeoVdV
      @NeoVdV Рік тому

      No, it would be to have more Watt available to run bigger load.
      I now have 2 solar panels of 150W, 12V Poly (facing South) and use them straight into my Ecoflow Delta 2.
      I notice that with that, and when Sun is out on the panels, I can charge the Delta 2 to full in well under 3h.
      I do get shading on the panels during the afternoon and the power drops significantly to only 40Watt.
      I bought 1 extra solar panel 150W, 12V Mono (facing South-West) and put all 3 in series.
      Dilemma ;
      As I only use a relative small percentage of my panels, because I only use it to charge the Delta 2 power station, I would like to benift more from it to have more off grid power and wonder what to do. What's best system wise and what's best budget wise.
      Do I buy the special extra Delta 2 battery from Ecoflow OR do I go for a DIY setup ?
      The Extra battery from Ecoflow is at 800,ooEuro and gives an extra 1024Wh but needs to be charged by the Delta 2 itself as it can not be charged or used by itself.
      The other DIY way has different options but comes at about the same cost for a little more power.
      As with the extra Delta 2 battery there is no need to buy anything else, no solar regulators, no 12V to 220V converter.
      On the other hand, with the DIY setup I do need 2x MPPT regulator (take 2x 100,ooEuro) , a 12V 100Ah LiFepo battery (around 500,ooEuro) and a 3000W pure sine converter (around 350,ooEuro) plus wires, fuses etc. (Comes easily at 1000,ooEuro) (And then better put a 4th solar panel of 150W 12V MONO, to balance and have 2x2 panels.
      I also looked at the GroWatt all in one but that asks for more panels (for minimum requirement start working voltage)
      That would be a nice system but even more expensive due to extra panels plus I only can put 6 panels (3x2 in slightly different orientation) due to space.

      @@NeoVdV Thanks for your detailed reply. I've actually thought about some of the issues you encountered. I originally have two 100 Ah Lithium Iron phosphate battery, now called LFE as a starter system, but in growing my backup system, I went with the Delta 2 with extra battery for compatibility and ease of use. The included electronics with the Ecoflow is a plus but also a minus. One day, when you press that on button, nothing will happen. Then you'll have nothing. The 5 year warranty tipped the scale in the favor of Ecoflow.
      I'm not happy with charging directly using solar panels as it's difficult to match the input voltage and amps requirement of the Ecoflow's solar input. While I plan to add an extra 100w solar panel to make my small system to be 400w, I plan to use my battery bank in my garage to charge the Ecoflow in my house through a DC to AC inverter. It'll be much simpler with steady results(using slow speed AC charging}.
      Since I'm using my setup more as a backup than off grid, I don't have a huge setup. The simplicity of the Ecoflow is hard to beat. Try buying a good 1800w DC to AC inverter and then all the wiring, BMS, battery terminals, circuit breakers and of course a battery and you'll know sometimes it's better to buy a ready made unit. Oh, did I mention you have buy a MPPT solar charger as well? :}

      @NeoVdV Рік тому

      Thank you for the reply.
      It looks like we have a similar system in mind.
      I received my new (3rh) panel ½h ago and I connected it. It now just sitting on my deck but in an almost same direction and a gle as it will be on my overhang.
      I connected all 3 in parallel. The first 2 are Poly, the new one is a Mono.
      I did play with angle and direction a bit, it's now noon here in Belgium. And I got about 200W with 2 panels, and 5min later got 245W with the total of the 3 panels. Not so great.
      As for my dilemma ... yes I see the pro of the Ecoflow extra battery, but see more cons to it for my use.

    • @wtam69
      @wtam69  Рік тому

      @@NeoVdV There is a place for diy and a place for a turnkey system. I figure when the electronics of the Ecoflow stop working, and they will, I at least can use the battery pack inside.
