Thanks for the video, I have the ram x scanoe with 3 seats. After seeing yours I might take out two of the seats and put in a platform and get a mudskipper twister.
I bought a 17 scanoe polyethylene with a minn kota 65w 18lb trolling motor, 50ah gel battery, 2 oars, and a round anchor for $375. Did some welding and touch up welding over what previous owner(s) did with hdpe green sticks and it should be good to go. Primary welding spots were just as you said, outside seat positions.
Use gflex it’s quite expensive but it works very well on the Colman scanoe I took a patch from the front or rear inside the boat ends as I had a hole in the runner on the bottom . Right where it is sloped up so a very hard spot to fix .i glued in a piece then I took a piece of patch material big enough to cover the repaired spot and I placed it on tinfoil and heated it in the oven at 350 till it is plyable then with oven mits on I took it out to the scanoe and placed it on another piece of tinfoil to take on the shape of the keil.once it cooled I glued it over the repaired spot with polyurethane from a glass shop then i .took it down a river which was very low water with lots of dragging with over 1000 pounds in it and the patch never failed . I hope this helps
I just got a Coleman outcast canoe. Can not find much information on this model. I got it for free. It's a 16-footer. My seats are connected to the aluminum frame on top. I'm going to have to put a seat in the middle of the canoe. Because when I sit in the back the front end goes up too high. Makes it harder to paddle especially in the wind. It looks like a ram x canoe but I have the handbook and it says outcast.
What’s the color on the boat. Is it a light lime green like this or is it dark green like my other one? If it’s the lighter green it’s usually just polyethylene but if it’s darker green that it’s Ram X
@@MudMotorsMax it's dark green. Her husband passed away 6 years ago. She put an ad in the paper saying come pick it up you can have it for free . so I got it. It has original paddles and the original motor mount.
@@garysmith7832 Congratulations man you got the best one I love those boats but since they don’t make them anymore I’m gonna have to build custom ones out of high-density polyethylene. That boat you have can put up with some serious stuff it’s flexible than getting super shallow water and you can load it full of gear and people
I'm picking one up tomorrow for free, but it has a bent gunnel on the port side between the two thwarts. Is it possible to bend them back? They're aluminum right?
I bought a 17’ Coleman canoe recently. It was on it’s side all last summer, so is warped from the heat. Plan is to drill out the rivets on the gunwales, use a heat gun to undo the heat warping. Then build wood gunwales, lay a layer of fiberglass over the outside for strength. Interior work will all be wood. It will get twin outriggers to make it a trimaran, add trampolines on each side for sitting or sleeping on, and will be rigging a Gunter mast and mainsail, and a jib, possibly a spinnaker.
I just picked one up and it's got a crack in it that I thought II could weld. I found out it is made out of (HDPE ) High density Polyethalene Which cannot be welded. It is also a plastic that Nothing sticks to, JB Weld , Gorilla glue And things of that nature will not stick to it. It can be repaired But it's gonna be messy and a eye sore.
Yes. I had bought 2 different types of welding irons and when I got my 17 flat back scanoe it had welded spots at the seats as he described and some other spots. They used mesh but did a messy job and one spot you could still see through the mesh. I bought green like colored hdpe welding sticks online and re-welded the spots and made it much better as well as filling in some non penetrating gouges on the points of the ridges on the bottom. It looks much better and the welding is really solid. It welds well and easily. You can absolutely do it. If you coat it well you can then sand it smooth, buff it and make the spots almost indistinguishable if you want to go that far.
@@MudMotorsMax I checked out your channel and subscribed to it. You have a lot of good stuff on there I appreciate it very much . I'm gonna bring my scanoe into the basement for the Winter and work on it. Thank you very much for the info much appreciated.
Ram X is thermoset high molecular weight Polyethylene that has been cross-linked the old models are just high density polyethylene… Take a scrape from your boat just a little piece of the plastic and get a lighter don’t burn yourself but see if it melts or if it burns or smokes if it does not melt than it is ram x If it does melt than it is thermoplastic plastic Meaning it is high density polyethylene that has not been cross-linked Which means it is the old models thanks for the video idea man
If it does smoke and burn then it is ramx if it melts then it’s the old polyethylene models They cracked because There was just not enough carbon in the plastic to give it UV resistant
How is it paddling a flat bottom canoe??? I never paddled with a flat bottom…. I usaully been on those tippy kind.. with that one runner down the middle, if you know what i mean lol…. But yah how is paddling with this
@@MudMotorsMax I did not know they were that expensive. I had a Coleman Jon boat that was really nice. I paid like $275 and it came with a trolling motor, 6 poles, 8 reels and a bunch of rubber worms. Oh and a six pack cooler. Used things have inflated soooo much it's ridiculous. I am floored at what dirtbikes are selling for so I build mini bikes instead.
@@fatbuddycat Yeah prices are going up tremendously Especially in the Boating realm people want to get out doors. As far as the shape of the boat I can’t complain I guess I get what I paid for. I’ll be buying a $200 hot air Speedwell there to repair the boat and then this winter time I’m hoping to be fabricating small hdpe Boats

Might have to get yourself a long Tail mud Motor for it

@@MudMotorsMax Yes it's a large canoe. I plan on setting it up for fishing. I need to get it registered so I can put a trolling motor on it.
I don’t need to register it if it’s just a trolling motor in Montana I’m not really sure about the laws in your area
These type of scanoes any good for long trips (3 days straight, 2 people, light gear, food)?
Are you able to run that boat with those mods and motor with out having to put weight in the bow ?

Try to tap at flat with a hammer or something but be easy

HDPE can absolutely be welded believe me… Look on the Internet for a hot air welder and get yourself HDPE rods. It’s absolutely repairable my friend
Go to my playlists and look up plastic welding check out all those videos

Is there an easy way to identify wether or not it is made from the Ram-X material?

I'm fortunate to still have the decal (Coleman RAM-X Scanoe) on my boat. Hopefully you'll find one that does.
You got the good one I’m just going to build high-density polyethylene custom boats I can’t keep buying And wrecking boats

Just fine! Tracks really well! paddles no problem so stable you can can stand up and pee off the side of the boat going down River
@@MudMotorsMax LOL.. awesome. Just bought one, havent used it yet
Why doesn't somebody pop a fiberglass mold and make em
Well Pelican owns the legal rights on the Scanoe so you would have to call it something else but definitely you could
Plastic welding eh? $235 new?
Yes
Not new used but new to me 🤣
