Lexus has a twin turbo V6...in their LS500, the first of its kind on any Lexus. I'm currently waiting to see how the 4th gen IS turns out in a couple of years (2019~), I know it'll get the new TNGA modular platform, but I'm hoping that Lexus takes a cue from Infiniti and puts a detuned TT V6 into the next IS350. The HP can remain around 300 or so, but the main benefit is to get a ton of low end torque at low RPM ranges. I'm also hoping it'll go to the new 8 speed DirectShift transmission that debuted in the 2018 Camry, and I want Lexus to use it for both RWD and AWD models. These things, along with Apple Carplay / Android Auto, will make the Lexus a serious threat to all of its competitors, especially the Germans.
elusivellama The 4th gen IS won't be out till the next generation GS gets introduced. (Likely MY 2020 or 2021 for next IS) The IS follows the GS platform. Second thing is - the new IS won't get the TNGA platform because it was just introduced to the New N platform. Strictly talking business, it won't be smart for Toyota/Lexus to jump the platform after only one generation of use. Its likely Toyota/Lexus won't give the IS and GS the TNGA platform anytime soon. Or if ever, if Toyota/Lexus decides the New N Platform is where the IS/GS/RC stays because not every car shares the same platform. Next thing - I don't think Lexus will introduce a detuned TT V6 to the IS350 anytime soon. It was just introduced into the LS, which is their flagship. Again, business speaking again, Toyota/Lexus would want to ride the LS500 hype of it being its first TT V6 to draw attention first. Once the LS500 is a few years in, Lexus will likely then introduce the detuned engine into its lower tier cars. IE: GS/IS. Most likely the GS will get it first as its top tier engine before the IS. Get the Camry's "new" 8 speed DirectShift transmission? You do know the Lexus IS (all models) has the the 8 speed directshift transmission already right? Its likely the Lexus IS transmission is better and geared more aggressively since the Camry is just an average joe family sedan. Hence: the Lexus IS 8 speed transmission is the Sport DirectShift. I personally think Apple Carplay/Android Auto is not something that will make Lexus a serious threat because the average consumer doesn't use Apple Carplay and Android auto as a deal breaker. You have to look at the demographics of the people that usually buy Germans or Lexus. This is why Toyota has Apple Carplay because majority of people that buy Toyota will likely care about it. However, its not likely Lexus buyers will care a whole lot. Besides, Lexus is trying to push their App Suite instead of doing a partnerships.
What? You really think that the IS won't get the TNGA until after the GS gets it, if ever? :( What you say about the LS500 riding the TT V6 hype makes sense, but I was really hoping for a taste of the global platform in the next gen IS... So wait... the Camry's 8 speed is designed for FF applications, and the 8 speed on the Lexus IS came first and is the true DirectShift?
elusivellama Not just me. Quite a bit of people on the Lexus forums think this as well. Me and many others obviously would want a new platform on the Lexus IS. *Who doesn't like new things?* But, the Lexus IS was just introduced onto the New N Platform as of 2014, right after the GS was introduced to it in 2013. Strictly business speaking, it won't be smart for Toyota/Lexus to throw the Lexus IS off the New N Platform after only using it for 1 generation. (That would be a waste of money.) Previously, the Lexus IS was on the N Platform for 2 generations before jumping to the New N platform this generation. So, in theory, the Lexus IS *could* get the TNGA but the GS would have to get it first. My best guess is the Lexus IS will get it 5th generation - if it does get it. Its complex because the Lexus IS follows the GS in terms of platform. So, if the GS changes, the IS will. But the RC, is the basically the Coupe IS. So, if the GS changes, the IS and RC will both change too. This is why money is a big factor in how long they will use a platform. The Lexus IS 8Speed DirectShift Auto was introduced in 2014. Its a more aggressively geared automatic transmission than the Camry's version because Lexus markets the IS as their "Sports Sedan." The Camry's version is geared to be more eco-friendly and comfortable due to the demographics of buyers within its segment. *Cars is just business. A aggressive and jerky 8 speed sport auto in a Camry won't sell well because majority of the people that buy Camrys won't like that.*
i love that blue colour. hate the fact that here in canada, if we want that colour we are left with only the black interior. In the US, you guys are privileged to have the red or that tan colour interior..so lucky.
The tires that are put on the car from the factory are absolutely garbage. Honestly, it's still a bit quieter in terms of wind noise, etc. than most other cars, but the tire roar is really pretty bad.
I like the style of IS, but I also have the same problem with that AWD bump near the driver side. I hope Lexus can have better info system instead if touch remote.
Nissan Skyline Oh yeah I forgot Lexus renamed the IS200t to “IS300 RWD.” Lexus’s naming has been really confusing now that the IS300 and LS500 have numbering that don’t match engine size.
So I know you did a comparison of 0-60 from the 2017 Honda Accord v6 sedan vs the 2018 2.0 T but I’m looking into getting the the 2017 coupe v6 touring. The v6 coupe suppose to be 0-60 in 5.6 which is faster then both the 2017 sedan and 2018. Can you please to a 0-60 compassion between the 2017 v6 coupe touring vs the 2018 2.0 T
Jim ee and Cam Life The center console is horribly outdated? Are you two stupid? Check the center console of BMW and Audi. If anything, they are more outdated than the Lexus. The BMW and Audi's navigation screen looks like a fucking after thought. It literally looks like they just went like "Oh shit. We forgot a screen and slapped it on there." And Lexus has touch-based A/C controls where you can slide up/down for change. How is that more "outdated" than knobs.
Jim ee I clearly hit a nerve, huh? While I introduced some opinions of why I think the BMW/Audi are more outdated, your responses are just insults. None of you people that say its outdated - can explain why its outdated.
My 350 F sport is coming at the end of the month. Excited!!!!!! P.S Chose Lexus because I like driving my car not a loaner while my cars in the shop :)
I had my is350 in the shop for a replacement dash (Lexus did it for free :D)...They gave me a loaner 2017 RX 350, and tbh...I was DYING To get my car back.
Terrible... On top of the obvious flaws still kinda sad Toyota/lexus refuses to tack on android auto/car play. As a lexus owner and fan i can say their problem has always been the infotainment. It gets very dated very fast, and is near impossible to swap out easily. I hate it. That alone is a major reason why i cannot buy another toyota/lexus product. Android auto and carplay will become a major factor in resale value in the future.
There are lots of aspects to vehicles... I prefer to drive my cars when I drive them, which is why I bought an IS 300 myself. Besides it does integrate with Pandora and has its own nav system, which can integrate with my phone for searching, so I am pretty much a happy camper in terms of infotainment. Admittedly, the mouse controller is clumsy, but I have gotten used to it. I mean if you are looking for tech, go Audi or BMW. If you want good driving dynamics, Lexus or Cadillac, or possibly Benz.
andrefrbk There isn't a problem with Lexus' infotainment system. The Apple/Android car play isn't a deal breaker for majority of the demographics in this segment. Lexus is pushing their App suite and has alternatives to Apple/Android Carplay. TBH - Apple/Android carplay is useless if the car is fully equipped. The only reason someone wants Apple/Android car play standard is so they can skip the navigation package to save roughly 2K. You think Lexus will have a resale value problem because of Apple/Android carplay? *Not likely.* An example of this would be a 2010/2011 Lexus IS250 F Sport. On AutoTrader, these things still sell for about 20K with 60-70K+ miles. Think about that. *A car that is close to a decade old with an outdated engine that has roughly 70K miles still sell for almost half of what someone bought it for.* That's fucking resale value king right there. Besides - you have to also take consideration of the software requires to use Apple/Android carplay. The question is - would a 2017 Apple Carplay work with an iPhone that comes out in 2025? If it works, would it lag? Is it gimmicky because its old Apple carplay software? The carplay software might become useless in the future.
Dude love your reviews. I love how you add your personality to it. Makes it more honest and enjoyable. Some guys talk in their reviews like it’s scripted. Please do a review of the IS350 F sport with the 8 speed. Fuck the AWD version. And a GS350 Fsport with 8 speed as well!!
hey @redlinereviews or other commenters this may seem unrelated to this car, but what vehicles would you consider quiet yet sporty at the same time? When I say this, I mean cars that have lots of power and accelerate very well, yet have a mostly quiet and compliant ride. Please share any thoughts. Thanks!
Pros: They are reliable, low maintenance costs, lots of equipment as standard, good looking, nice cabin, comfortable Cons: Performance is a bit weak for a luxury sports sedan. And don't get me started with the technology with that abysmal scout gps to the enform app and their refusal to put Apple car play or Android auto into their cars. Front tires are narrower than rear so no rotation
Jon Mario I test drove a couple lexuses and although they drive smooth, I feel no difference between a Lexus and a Civic, etc. Definitely not 50-80 thousand worth. I'll stick with my si every four-five years.
I just cant get over that fugly front. Best part of this car is the interior and rear view. That’s it. BMW 3 series is the only car in this segment that has really nailed their design.
No it is not; it feels like that likely for a second due to turbo lag, but the IS 200t makes peak 258lb/ft @ 1650rpm while the IS 300 only manages 236lb/ft @ 2000rpm. So not only the peak torque arrives earlier, but the I4 turbo actually more powerful taking off than the neutered V6. Again, if I wanted the IS with the V6, I skip the options and go for the IS 350 instead.
I drove an NX 200t not too long ago as a loaner, and the engine in that was pretty responsive. I would definitely keep my V6 though, even if it's detuned. No turbo lag and much better sound.
I driven the NX200t and the engine felt good. Not as powerful or lag free as Audi or BMW 2.0L turbos but it gets good MPG and still has decent power. The problem I have is the IS 300 V6 is really inefficient & artificially limited in power while retaining the fuel consumption of the significantly stronger IS 350.
Mr know it all here says he wants a twin turbo engine like all the competitors. He also wants a high engine repair bill. Lovely. Lexus if u listen to this guy you're bringing in a good buisness plan for real customers complaints other then a 6 speed automatic.
Problem is, no matter which version you are looking at there are clearly better cars for the price. E.g., the new Accord at the lower end and the A4 at the high end.
Price. Still considering the 300 has a neutered 3.5L V6 that gets significant less power than even a 2018 Camry V6 but IDENTICAL MPG as the 350 means you should just save up more and go for the 350 instead.
GreenTea We have driven an M2 about a year ago when it first came out. Didn’t have the car long enough to do a full review. Hopefully BMW will start sending us press loans soon.
You should've reviewed the 350 F-Sport. the 300 AWD is the heaviest and the least fun trim in the line up, it only has the normal sport mode instead of the Sport+ on RWD models. Make sure to review the 350 F-Sport RWD for the 2018 model.
Acrux We’ve been asking Lexus for a rear drive IS 350 F-Sport for years now. They just seem to always have the AWD models in our DC area due to the weather conditions.
I prefer the styling of the pre-refresh model (2014-16). These tail lights are hideous. But the IS is not a bad car. My friend owns a 2014. It's small and cramped inside but it's a really nice car
i agree with you and dont get the complaint about the power and other specs. Not all wants to take their cars to the tracks, some of us just want a reliable car as the top preference plus a little luxury features as added option which i think this car provides.Whats th point in buying a car with all the latest techs and power but have a horrible reliability issues.I surely would go for reliability first above all the luxury features.I think Sofyan is only going for the fun of the turbo and others but i certainly think this car ticks a lot of the boxes.
Jake Carter no doubt Lexus is higher but strictly speaking numbers Infiniti has the edge especially when the Q50 first came out the base engine was a V6 with 328 horsepower
BrawlFreak786 lol actually not that Q50 car doesn’t handle good. It just has a turbo engine other then that the Q50 is trash and also the Lexus GSF is more powerful AND better handling then the Q50. Lexus makes better performance cars then Infiniti hell Infiniti can’t even make a real luxury car.
Toyota4Life the Q50 and the GSF are in a completely different class so that's not a valid argument. Lexus is more about luxury and not sport and they're really trying to be sporty but I don't think it's working out. Infiniti is all sport and not luxury no doubt Acura is taking over the cushy soft luxury side that Lexus left behind when they tried to be more edgy
Beautiful car but not enough power for the money. I just saw the new Camry V6 in person (SO nice) and it looks just as good and has more power. Try again Lexus
This ugly inside Lexus vs mighty Giulia TI for the same price. What is better? Anyone talking about reliability: Giulia gets 4 years bumper to bumper, 4 years is more than a lease and more than enough to change the car, always good to refresh stuff, if you want to drive more, Giulia still has a few years extra warranty for powertrain. What's the point of that Lexus?? IS should start from 30k, it competes with Infinity and Acura ILX, maybe up to an Audi, but not with MB, BMW
I looked at these and thought it was nice but - I didn’t want to buy a car where the manufacturer purposely hurts performance of an engine and doesn’t provide better fuel mileage (same concern with A4 Ultra). Good luck finding a 350, they just aren’t around much. So you can get a lot of money off of these but I ended up still buying a demo 330i with all options (sticker near $60k) at a better deal. It’s faster and just nicer.
The 2018 model allows you to get memory seats with the F Sport package. For the 2018 year, they dropped the IS 200t name and it comes as: IS 300 RWD (2.0L 4 cylinder turbo charged engine), the IS 300 AWD (3.5L de tuned V6) and the IS 350 AWD and RWD (3.5L V6).
The 2nd Gen IS350 was pretty quick and could keep up with a E90 335i. It’s just that Lexus didn’t update the engine for the 3rd gen that it can’t keep up with BMW now.
Samuel Wu exactly it’s just down right silly for Toyota to not even upgrade the 2GRFSE or throw an FI Turbo or Supercharger at least. Hence why the IS is overpriced for what its worth might as well saved thousands by getting a 2 Gen IS350. Toyota/Lexus has just gotten too lazy to take risks on powertrains.
I don't get the complaints of the styling. This car looks great imo

I've driven the IS300 and it definitely goes 0-60 in 6.1 seconds. I tested it.
"lets throw in a bunch of parts that will make the car more expensive to repair"
I’m not sure why they wouldn’t send you the is350 f sport RWD, that’s the most impressive and sporty model.
Do any of the Lexus cars have a manual transmission option? I want a midsize sedan with manual transmission.
i love that blue colour. hate the fact that here in canada, if we want that colour we are left with only the black interior. In the US, you guys are privileged to have the red or that tan colour interior..so lucky.
Just realized you were driving in northern va kinda funny I recognized the buildings in the background
Your nuts, this car looks crazy nice. Leaps and bounds better than any German cars
Definetly not better than German cars
hello, wich tipe of cameras are those that you got on the windshield ? thanks
Thank you for this review. I was torn about choosing the Fsport. I know now what I want. A+
but will a 2jz turbo fit...?
Lol yes actually. There have been some people who have engine swapped 2JZ-GTE’s in their IS’s.
Do u have a decibel meter ? Sounds loud in there
The tires that are put on the car from the factory are absolutely garbage. Honestly, it's still a bit quieter in terms of wind noise, etc. than most other cars, but the tire roar is really pretty bad.
Whats that green light that flashes in the dash all the time?
Probably the ECO light, to tell you if you're driving ECO-friendly. It can be turned off (which I recommend).
Can u test chraysler 300c luxury with a V8?
How will it depreciate? Reliable cars hold their value more?
me watching this video having just bought a 2017 f sport 🤣🤣🤣 i been saving for years!!! i love it
I like the style of IS, but I also have the same problem with that AWD bump near the driver side. I hope Lexus can have better info system instead if touch remote.
What's the diff between the new IS 300 and IS350? or did they remove the IS 350?
IS300 is AWD only. IS350 comes option of either RWD or AWD. Same engines but 300 is detuned so less power than 350.
Samuel Wu Isnt AWD better than RWD?
For the 2018 - Lexus IS300 RWD (Turbo Engine), Lexus IS300 AWD (V6), Lexus IS350 (V6).
Nah AWD is good for the winter but I live in a place that never snows so I will take RWD over AWD all day any day.
Nissan Skyline Oh yeah I forgot Lexus renamed the IS200t to “IS300 RWD.” Lexus’s naming has been really confusing now that the IS300 and LS500 have numbering that don’t match engine size.
lexus for life
Any updates regarding the nsx?
Redline Reviews how does it compare to the Q50? Which would you choose?
Tyrone Long both are reliable. The Q50 will get you more power with their 3.0TT. I’d say it comes down to performance and styling.
Nooo--- keep the natural aspirated v6! It lasts much longer than a twin turbo. Reliability is the reason why Lexus stands apart from most
REDLINE IS IN LOUDON VA? I love you guys based in Fairfax :)
Lexus is getting better an better
please review the new crosstrek
Manual plz!!
What is up with the title though? Bmw? I know BMW has been sucking as of late, but really?
Love your reviews! Could you also please review the Alfa Romeo Giulia (preferably the TI trim)
Did lexus say anything about a new ISF??
Lexus = reliability. And I'm crazy about the corporate look btw.
Can you please to a 0-60 compassion between the 2017 v6 coupe touring vs the 2018 2.0 T
the center stack is horribly outdated also
@Jim ee - agreed, it’s the major reason why I did not purchase another Lexus. Center dash looks like a fucking 1989 Nissan or Camry. 😖
How is that more "outdated" than knobs.
someones feelings got hurt lmao
Nissan Skyline ok miss
Jim ee I clearly hit a nerve, huh? While I introduced some opinions of why I think the BMW/Audi are more outdated, your responses are just insults. None of you people that say its outdated - can explain why its outdated.
I don’t think they should use all turbos because they aren’t as reliable or smooth.
GavinQuacks i agree. and the responsiveness of a naturally aspirated engine is great aswell :)
My 350 F sport is coming at the end of the month. Excited!!!!!!
P.S Chose Lexus because I like driving my car not a loaner while my cars in the shop :)
Free Slukhan congrats!!!
I had my is350 in the shop for a replacement dash (Lexus did it for free :D)...They gave me a loaner 2017 RX 350, and tbh...I was DYING To get my car back.
Derrick Davis lol, loving my 2017. I've had it for 2 weeks now, Looking to get a exhaust on it but cant find anything made for the 2017 unfortunately.
still no LED turn signals?
fillup316 sadly no
Android auto and carplay will become a major factor in resale value in the future.
andrefrbk Get a Chevy Malibu, they have android/apple CarPlay...I don’t think Toyota/Lexus will lose any sleep if you don’t buy their products anyways.
The paddles don't work? What?
Thanks!
Jude Mathews comparable to this, Q50, A4, 3 series, C class
Does that mean you can tune the car and basically have a 350?
Absolutely. It's only limited by the ECU. RR Racing has a tune for this that essentially makes the output equivalent to that of the 350.
Pretty much.
ARentz07 i did it to mine, def worth the $500
@@mohkg1017 where did you buy the tune any links?
Pros:
They are reliable, low maintenance costs, lots of equipment as standard, good looking, nice cabin, comfortable
Cons:
Performance is a bit weak for a luxury sports sedan. And don't get me started with the technology with that abysmal scout gps to the enform app and their refusal to put Apple car play or Android auto into their cars. Front tires are narrower than rear so no rotation
Can't wait to trade in my 2014 IS250 for 2018 IS350. gotta earn a little more $$$ first. lol
Save your money and get a cheaper car. The prices on these lexuses are crazy.
lead poisoning its worth it tho
Leo Francis you are talking about leasing right?
Jon Mario I test drove a couple lexuses and although they drive smooth, I feel no difference between a Lexus and a Civic, etc. Definitely not 50-80 thousand worth. I'll stick with my si every four-five years.
JC4 no. buying.
I thought you would show us the inside
Finally been waiting forever for this lol
Are you going to be reviewing the new Kia Stinger?
Zerg_Killer-5 Yes, next month we will be at the Stinger Media drive so expect a full review then :)
Redline Reviews awesome, cannot wait to get back from deployment, I've been looking forward to this car all year
I just cant get over that fugly front. Best part of this car is the interior and rear view. That’s it. BMW 3 series is the only car in this segment that has really nailed their design.
The IS 350 and IS 200t still are better powertrains. The 300 has neither the torque of the 200t but identical 350 fuel economy. No thanks.
Trades46 its naturally aspirated so feels more lively than turbo, is more powerful when taking off.
Technically, the SC was Lexus’s first “sporty” model
Can you review a 2015 Lexus ls460? 🤓
FINALLY!! this car is one of the most underrated cars ever. Best in it's class
I'm confused.... Why would they detune it?? :/
To compete with cars like the 328, C300, A4 2.0T
Ah ok makes sense, thx :]
Smaller build and $$$$
Oh how I cant wait to test this model! Love any F-Sport Lexus!
Why would they chop off horsepower ??
$$$
I really dont see the point in this IS300......
Same. No point having the 300 when there’s an AWD for the 350 anyways.
If money is no object, then sure. But it is cheaper than a 350, and that's why it exists.
I really wish people would stop pretending that cross-shopping a Honda (or a Toyota) and a Lexus is a thing.
Have you had a chance to drive the M240i or an M2? I'd like to see your take on it; every reviewer is raving about it as a "true BMW"
Nice review.
Wrong the current Japanese "BMW" Sport sedan is the Q50
Jake Carter no doubt Lexus is higher but strictly speaking numbers Infiniti has the edge especially when the Q50 first came out the base engine was a V6 with 328 horsepower
We'll talk about that in our upcoming review on the 2018 Q50 Red Sport!
Totally agreed
I personally think Infiniti is the Japanese "BMW" Sport Sedan.
chocolatewheelchair that would've been the case around the days of the G35/G37's days.. Lexus makes much more sporty cars now a days.
NS yeah I like Lexus but when you look at the best Infiniti has to offer it’s pretty slick. They’re kinda under the radar.
chocolatewheelchair Infinity is nowhere near as reliable and their latest designs are ugly af
Jeff Brisson false lmao bmw oil changes are like 150 bucks 😂 and the maintenance is ridiculous I’d get any other German car over that
I liked the review
Design shall age well
Beautiful car but not enough power for the money.
Vampire_born_in_2006 you sir are an absolute idiot!
It’s faster and just nicer.
changes? none..
price increase, oh yes...
The Infiniti RS would smoke this you’ve got to be kidding me...
it's almost 2018, please review the latest model
There's barely any difference between the 17 and 18. The 18 has 5 more horsepower and all the safety equipment standard.
This is the latest model...
He doesn't get to pick which models or years he gets, they get what the companies loan to them
The 2018 model allows you to get memory seats with the F Sport package. For the 2018 year, they dropped the IS 200t name and it comes as: IS 300 RWD (2.0L 4 cylinder turbo charged engine), the IS 300 AWD (3.5L de tuned V6) and the IS 350 AWD and RWD (3.5L V6).
Almost 50k for This? You can get a q50 red sport for like 2k more with 400 hp
And ppl say the tyoe r is ugly when Lexus are hideous.
I've always liked the design of this car but I wish they would make an ISF with this body style.
I wanted one of these after my best friend leased a 2014... I stopped at Audi and bought a S line A4.
Well in my opinion BMW currently is Germen"Lexus" because everything of Lexus better than BMW
gtfo!
Lol
True.
Lexus got the grille design from a mood room filled with vacuum cleaners
The IS350 is so damn slow compared to the 340i with the mppk
NS well they had that same darn motor since 2006 and I’m saying this as Lexus owner. Toyota needs to copy MB playbook and return to the Inline 6.
Rain Santiago yea the old 300 with the 2jz was so simple and super reliable and smooth
