My cat likes it... for historical purposes check out Elton Johns 1979 album "victim of love" its kinda a throw away album for Elton honestly, but a young Marcus Miller is doing this very thing your showing us too..
OK - I hope that this taken in the spirit with which it is intended. I want to state for the record - Im a bass player - close to 30 years now - did the music School thing. I have no ego about it - I love the bass. I worked at The Bass Collective for a number of years - I got to work with Vic, Oteil, I was there when Tal Wilkenfeld met Oteil - I set up the master class. Anyway - Im not trying to impress so much as say - Im not talking out of my ass - or trying to call anyone our - Im too old for that shit. And before Im done with this absurd preamble - allow me to say that I am totally cool being wrong. So if I am and someone can show me as such - just do so and be cool about it - at the end of the day we are all here to be better at what we do - because we love the bass - that being said - I dig history too - particularly when it comes to the minutia of what I love - music - bass - amongst other things - so here goes - As I understand it - Victor came up with the double thumb - in Answer to Marcus's thumb speed - because he has smaller hands and couldn't thump that fast. Keep in mind Vic started playing at the age of four - on a full sized bass - then later - And I think it was on his MKII album - i think it was reales in 99 or 2000 - it was the last Marcus CD I bought - not because I stopped digging Marcus - but because I stopped digging "bass album" ( i was coming out of a 5 year jazz coma - so I took a break and started listening to The Clash again... my roots) And I remember clocking that Marcus had been shedding - I can hear the difference between the "double thumb" and the "double thump"- So That being said - I dont this this Marcus MIller's Technique - this holds no baring on how well you execute it in the above video - nor am I some sort of purist screaming "If you dont play it like Marcus its WRONG!" Im just about folks getting proper credit. Also - I love the fact that even after the career Marcus has had - one in which he could totally rest on his Laurels - and just be the hip elder statesman bassist that he is - its not about that - its about the music and the instrument - and the man went and LEARNED new shit! Alrfith - if you read this whole thing I owe you a coffee - or a bong hit - or both if it works out that way. PEACE
Can't remember which interview it was, but I remember Victor Wooten saying he didn't come up with the technique - his brother Regi taught him that cause apparently it was something jazz guitarists did on their guitars if they didn't have a pick in hand.
I've never seen so many dashes and declarations of what someone is and isn't. I feel like there was a few too many bong hits done prior to this being typed.
great work! im also a fender player, trying to up my slap game, i am having trouble getting a reliable pop with my thumb after thumping, this video is helpful B)

Playing bass for 6 years and enjoyed reading your comment. Thanks for clarifying some bass history for us. And I’d accept both of those offers
