- Take your snare tuning skills to the next level! Howdy All. Here's a highlight video stuffed full of tuning tips from my step by step drum tuning lesson "How To Tune A 6.5" x 14" Brass Snare Drum Step By Step To 4 Great Tunings" feat. the Rogers 6.5" x 14" Brass SuperTen Snare Drum. In this vid I demo/discuss how to get 4 great tunings for a Brass Snare Drum. These tunings are a great start for ANY metal shell 14" snare drum at any depth. In the full step by step video at www.kennysharretts.com I take you step by step from "ground to sound" from installation for both heads through all 4 tunings (Low, Medium, Medium high, and high tones) including pitches, frequencies, and Drum Dial settings for ALL of the tunings. Please stream the full lesson at

as streaming the lesson helps to support my channel, AND give you a wicked set of drum tuning skills to boot.
Tunings include a full bodied medium tension Perfect 4th, a swampy low tension Perfect 5th , a medium/high tension Major 3rd for a killer pop, and medium/high tension Perfect 4th with a full bodied crack like the tuning I used for the Black Beauty of Drew Shoals with Train.
The best part is how you learn to move quickly from tuning to tuning with ease. This Super Ten snare sounds amazing to me, and was a joy to tune. It truly is a bucket list snare for me. So the fact that I could get SO MANY great sounds out of this drum made me 100% stoked about this acquisition for my snare collection.

This video is also a great demo for a ton of amazing drum products such as the PUNCHY as it gets Dragonfly Percussion Hard Leather Kick Drum Beater

You will hear this beater packs a serious punch for the 14" x 20" Rogers PowerTone Bass Drum which has the body of tone of a 22" Kick Drum, but the tight, punchy characteristics of a 20" Bass Drum. Dare I say it's the perfect bass drum. LOL Especially with this sick beater.

Kenny by far has been one of my favorite drum techs of my career! He's so precise with drum tuning, ergonomics, drum setup building, and even part time yoga instructor! Haha! (inside joke between us) :-) This is the guy you want to pay attention to and learn from, because he knows exactly what he's talking about, as you can see here. I never let anyone tune my drums until I met Kenny. Thank you brother!
Lil' John 😊
Man LJ you honor me with your words. I’m truly humbled. When you first wrote this it hit deep. I needed a moment as it meant the world to me. Teching for was an honor, and one of the greatest applications of all I had learned before I came to the Janet camp. . Tuning, rack design, endorsements, and programming. Like a masterclass in my craft. I owe you a debt of gratitude. You were the kindest cat to work for, but you made one thing clear, and TBH that one thing has helped me become better at my craft, and better as a human being. As kind as you were , that one thing was “there was only one inch of rope for error, because this is The Velvet Rope” Respect that you were caretaker of that rope with service that reflects its magnitude. Cause nobody want a velvet rope burn. 😂😂😂🙏🙏🙏 Miss ya bro!
Ahhhhh! That last line :-) love ya man! @@KennySharretts
Kenny you’re the best!!! Best tips ever!

Lovely press roll
Thank you so much. 😊
Awesome Man
Thank you so much for watching. 🙌
Bell brass (bronze of course) might be a nice video since the popularity.
I will have to start saving my pennies.
@@KennySharretts Or barrow Tucker Rule's.
Kenny, great review and demonstration, as always. You mentioned your favorite batter head for metal head snare. Do you have a favorite for a wood shell snare? Looking for a recommendation to go on a 6.5 x 14 Walnut shell snare. Thank you.
First of all thank you for the kind words. Bro the Power Center Reverse Dot or surprisingly the Genera Dry OR HD Dry depending on your intent have all three KILLED IT on my GK Drums Walnut Snares. The Genera Dry is slaughtering it on my 6.5" x 14" 8 lug Rogers Powertone for a clean open single ply tone with a touch of control. Also I would think The Evans Power Center/ Remo Controlled Sound would probably give you a chalkier/drier, thicker tone, but a single ply feel. The Genera Dry/Remo Powerstroke 3 will be a a more open, but still a controlled tone. Plus the single ply feel. For getting to the point with little to no muffling allowing the walnut to ring a bit? Mmmnnn sweeeet! LOL For my tastes these heads allow the walnut to shine without the whine from over-ring. :-) Beyond that look at Aquarian, Code, and Attack versions of these types of heads. You may find the magic skin for that drum. Thank you so much for watching, and commenting.
@@KennySharretts Kenny, what can I say, other than: Thank you for going above and beyond for the recommendations. Wow. I will absolutely be trying these recommendations and saving this info for future reference. You rock.
One final note: I own two of the newer Dynasonic snare drums and one of the newer Dynomatic bass drum pedals. I plan to get one or more additional Rogers snare drums in the future and, eventually, a Rogers kit... leaning heavily towards the PowerTone kit... want you to know your reviews and demonstrations have helped me come to that decision. Thank you so much for the wonderful content.
P.S. Your tuning skills and content is unique and second to no one.
saw the tunebot and drum dial, I thought He will use it. Can you guest what is HZ for top and bottom in tunebot?
No guesses needed. I did use the Tunebot, and drum dial settings are in the step by step lesson on this drum now streaming at

my favorite snare is my black beauty, 14x6.5 ludwig. my only grip is that snare detunes at the rim strike lug. is this a common problem with bb's? i dont get detuning on my canopus maple or my tama imperial steel shell. i use lug locks, but theyre a pain to take off everytime i want to tweek the drum
This or the wood Dynasonic, if you could only have one Ken…?
That’s a hard one as I absolutely love this drum, but I have to say the wood Dyna. I played it on every gig for about 2 years pre-pandemic. EVERY sound engineer came up to me after sound check or the 1st set to ask what snare that was as it was the best sounding snare drum they had ever mixed.
@@KennySharretts
Thank you. 👍🏿😊
Hi! Do you change pitch intervals based on venues you play in? In my case, I keep a standard 4ths interval in my tuning (since im not familiar with what works best). To add, in connection to metal snares, I think a great topic for your next few videos would be to hear side by side differences of metal snares with different shell thickness!
Howdy Andrew. In general I keep my tunings the same in most rooms whether drumming, or teching. When drumming I’ll change the snare sound for big rooms with stone floors/tin roofs or small rooms where a higher tuning cuts too much. I’ll Def look into your great idea. Thank you so much for watching.
@@KennySharretts cool, how do you change your snare sound? Do you change pitch intervals?
@@andrewlau2939 yes. That’s what my step by step lessons are all about. They teach you how to quickly, and easily change your snare tuning to fit any style of music, or environment. Please feel free to stream the step by step lesson as it’s one of my most complete vids so far, and it will take your snare tuning skills to the next level. Plus it will help to support my channel. Thank you again for watching.
Kenny,do you prefer a moongel on a properly tuned brass snare or do you like that "brassy ring"?
Another awesome video.
Thank you for the kind words, and for watching. It absolutely depends on the situation. I love the ring, but in general I use one moon gel in order to add a touch of control for the ring, and the snare wire resonance. The control, and little bit of mass helps focus the snare sound, and allows me to keep the wires juicy without excess snare rattle. Hence you get a big fat spread that is driven by the ring of the shell. As always Super Thanks is now available on my vids, or please feel free to stream the step by step lesson to help you get a great snare sound, and help to support my channel. Blessings.
The original Super Ten was a steel shell. The Powertone was brass. The reissue Powertone is steel and the reissue Superten is brass? I don't love that they changed that.
The new Rogers Drum Co. has definitely added their own approach to a few bits of the Rogers designs/model names, but in general they have paid great respect to the Rogers legacy. Especially when it comes to design, build quality, and most importantly the sound of the drums. It is pure Rogers head to toe. I was blown away by the PowerTone Kit I demoed in this session, and I gotta be honest. I LOVE this snare. Thank you so much for watching, and commenting.
Btw I agree that the original steel Suoer Ten was an incredible sounding snare.
@@KennySharretts I totally agree. They've done an incredible job.
Just bought my first brass snare! This came in handy, thank you so much!
That is so awesome to hear. I’m love brass snares. Just something about that tone! 🙌I’m glad you found the video helpful. Thank you for watching, and commenting. As i’m telling all my viewers Super Thanks is now available on my vids to help support my channel.
Not my snare sound. That head choice and gel sucks the life out of the brass character of the drum for my tastes. If I wanted little ring, I’d go with something other than brass. Still appreciated the different tunings though.
Thank you for the kind words on the multiple tunings. I can absolutely understand if these tunings are not for you. Most of the vids I’ve seen on this drum were done with a single ply head tuned super low. It’s a great sound. In this video, I wanted to show the other spectrum of this drum by using medium to high tension tunings as TONS of viewers have commented on how much they loved the snare sound I used for Drew Shoals’ Black Beauty. (Coated Emperor or CS Dot for him). Hence I wanted to share some insights into getting that sound. However, most of the touring drummers I work for tend to use thicker heads as we are in arenas, and stadiums. Not clubs. Durability, projection, and respectful control of the ring tends to be the order of the day. I can tell you from 23 years of pro level touring that once the “ringy snare” shows up there will be many conversations with Monitors/FOH about what to do with the ring. Lol! My preference is to use a touch of dampening to help shape the ring do it enhances tone, and projection. Same thing happens in the studio sessions I tech. I do want to clarify that what you are saying is that the head choice (single ply w/ a dot), and 3/4 moon gel sucks the life out of the drum (aka the ring) but you don’t like the ring of brass drums? Just note that in a beefy rock/country/outdoor amphitheater situation these choices will focus the brass “ring”, and allow me to loosen the wires for more spread resulting in a fuller snare sound. Thank you so much for watching, and commenting.
@@KennySharretts I actually liked the tunings. It was the batter head that wasn’t my cup of tea. For my tastes, and I’ll emphasize that it’s my preference, I want more ring out of a brass drum. If a particular snare rings just a tad too much, I’ll go with a power center reverse dot. The patch on the bottom tames an especially ringy drum just enough. The version of the head with with the dot on top, coupled with gel, just dampens the drum too much for me. I play in clubs and bars and lack your experience in setting up drums in bigger venues, and tailoring sound preferences for the artist you may be supporting. I have full confidence Kenny that you’re fantastic at what you do. Didn’t want to come off like a jerk. Just stating a preference for me.
@@richboshart1201 brooooo I totally agree with you. The under dot does exactly what you say. It’s what I have been using on my Dyna’s and my Black Beauty. I too love a drum with the perfect ring. 🤗🤗🤗🤗 I hope I didn’t come across wrong. I know a lot of drummers still do an Ambassador in the big halls. Like Pete Thomas w/ Elvis Costello. Sounds perfect BECAUSE of the ring 💪🏻 Thank you again for the kind words on the tunings. I will have to follow up with an G1 and share some tunings on this snare as I barely scratched the surface of what this drum can give you.
Love the enthusiasm Kenny!!!
Thank you, and thank you for watching. I love good drum sounds, and I love this drum.
