My 14 inch floor tom makes a great nightstand too many years of struggling to get it to sound good I now have a 16 and 18 and I love them. 🤟
🤣🤣🤣you are not alone. That’s one of the reasons I made video as 14” Floor Toms can be challenging to tune. Thank you so much for watching.

An 8 lug 14 floor tom, now that's a well constructed drum. Except for multi thousand $$ series kits, most drum companies only use 6 lugs on a 16 & 18 floor tom - a cheap marketing trick to add more tension lugs which improves sound/consistent tuning, that drum companies won't disclose on their "select" timber series.
I’ve worked on many an 8 lug 16 and 18 floors on discount kits, but I know there are a lot of 6 lug floors out there as well. Thank you for watching, and commenting 🙏
@@KennySharrettsWere the 8 lug 16s on older less valued series ? Because from what I saw checking into this about a year ago, was that Yamaha and I believe Mapex only manufacturers offering more lugs on their low to mid range series. From experience I think Yamaha makes solid drums in general, no matter the price range.
@@KennySharretts Btw, what era and series is the Roger's floor tom in your vid ? I've never owned a Roger's kit , admired their craft tho.
Agreed with you on Yamaha. They do make a good drum.
Boom! 🤘 great video as always. Learnt so much from your videos. Thank you. Are those black nylon washers on the lug bolts? Do they help to reduce the friction between the bolt and the hoop?
Thank you so much. 🤘🏻 Yes. I love using nylon washers between the hoop and tension rod. Smoother tuning (especially at higher tensions), less friction, and the washers don’t cut into the hoop.
Roughly how many cotton balls would you say you put in a 16 Tom?? And if you would be so kind, any tips from your experience how much less you’d put in smaller toms? Appreciate ya buddy
Floor toms between 2-4, smaller toms 1-2. Thanks for the kind words, and for watching sir. Much appreciated.
Kenny, good stuff. Did you settle on the C for the 14" because of where you had the rack? Curious what that floor tom would sound like going down to B flat or even A. Sounds like it had the room. But I know that would mean probably bringing the rack down too.
Bringing the rack down was. I problem. The 14” was about as low as it could go on the batter without wrinkles when the Reso was tuned a Major 3rd or perfect 4th higher. If even tuning was used I probably could have gotten b’s out of both heads. The drum, however, might not have spoken as well much lower. Thank you for watching, and commenting.
great video! is that an Ahead stool you have to your left with the stuff on it, if so just curious if that is helpful for back pain prevention/ comfort. i have been thinking of getting one since i have developed disc issues at lumber/sCral area and the lumber support on my roc n soc doesn’t help much
Absolutely. That one is great for those who want a back as well. I also use a motion-pro. They both rock! Thank you for the kind words, and for watching. 🤘🏻
...most important tuning video !! 14ths are most problems in tuning.......
Thank you so much for the kind words my friend. Thank you also for watching.
How come I’m hearing the opposite? When you say that one’s high, I thought it sounded low, and vice versa…
That’s a great question. Very often I’ll. Listen to the lowest pitch for tone matching, and the high harmonic for the fine tuning. A “low” lug will often sing with the pitch of the “target” lug or higher pitch in this case. The high harmonic is often the best indicator of the lowness or highness. So while it may sound the opposite, when i’m at the drum I can clearly tell the difference. Even when editing the overhead shots I have to remind myself that even though the mic captures a lot, it can often be hard to discern which tension Rod is singing out , and which one is reacting sympathetically. Thank you so much for commenting, and watching.
@@KennySharretts got it, thanks for the video and the explanation, super helpful!
This is exactly what I was looking for. I just got my first kit and it sounds terrible lol I've tries everything and it completely wrong.
Absolutely stoked to know the video helped. Thank you for commenting, and for watching.
@@KennySharretts still gonna hit you up from your website. Christmas was a little rougher than expected. Once I get past that and my kiddos are taking care of I'll get in touch with you. I'm replacing the stock heads on the set. Waiting on a pack of Evans UV2 heads to come in the mail.
Where is it that you explain how to tune if you come across the problem of having 4 equal on the X and 4 equal on the cross? I couldn't find it. I run into that ALL the time. But can never even it up from there.
I can now.... 😎
0:54 unless it goes to your left! Come on! =))
🤣🤣🤣🤣 indeed.
😅
man you make me like drums
Thank you so much for the kind words. That makes me happy to hear.
My 14 floor sounds like a snare. I messed up
Oh no. Keep the top head close to as low as you can go. Reso a 3rd or 4th higher.
@@KennySharretts I appreciate your videos they help a lot !!! We got it dialed in !
