Funny enough, Oda said he didn’t plan anything special for chapter 1000. The story just happened to be in the right spot. Much to his relief because he said everyone around him was expecting something HUGE for 1000.
Yes, Oda said something along the lines of "Chapter 1000 should be something special in the eyes of some people, but the characters in the story do not know about things like chapter milestones."
"Honestly, I didn't have much motivation for chapter 1000, but people around me said, "One Piece is approaching Chapter 1000!" so then I thought, "Wait, am I expected to draw something special in Chapter 1000?" I gradually felt pressure around chapter 980 when my editors started some celebration plans. I had difficulty trying to spice up the story just in time for chapter 1000. It was difficult since, in reality, Luffy and my characters don't know they need to hype up their audience for chapter 1000. They are just acting for their own purposes. In retrospect, I'm pretty satisfied with my audience having enjoyed chapter 1000! Thank you for the celebration messages! I appreciate from the bottom of my heart that I"m allowed to draw manga for as many as 1000 chapters!"
@@mywallet7367 ^ this, yes oda did plan for 1000 to be something special because people wanted him too. but he himself didnt plan anything special or even think about it until he was getting close. whats more impressive is 20 chapters is a long time in real life but not in the manga so theres only so much he coulda changed or worked on to slide the story into 1000 being special
It took Oda about seven years (SEVEN YEARS) to finally have all the Strawhats (+the newest member) on the same place working together (Dressrosa was when they got separated and after that at least one member was always missing -the closest they got was Zou and Sanji was already missing there). I can't express with words how much I loved those manga chapters when I first read them. Seeing them finally working together after so long was... It was just the best.

Also about Kid’s crew still accepting Killer, I find it so so sweet how the crew starts laughing the way Killer does (Fwa fwa fwa) so that he feels accepted and so that he doesn’t feel embarrassed about his laugh (since we know he feels insecure about his laugh). So wholesome
I really don't know what my favorite comedy moment would be. I really like chopper tied around Law's head (when Law realizes he screwed up), Law not liking bread, marine shooting a cannon at Luffy while he's in a tree & runs away saying you missed me, etc.
In the SBS volume 100, oda told us Ulti was born on the Grand Line 22 years ago. She and her brother Page One (two years after her, so 20 yo) were born to an unknown male pirate who eventually died. Kaido, who had been acquainted with their father, took the siblings in. Ulti eventually stole two Devil Fruits from Kaidou for herself and Page One to partake of, to make themselves into formidable fighting forces for Kaidou and thereby persevere in the Beasts Pirates, a crew in which only the strong survive. Eventually, the siblings both became Tobiroppo.
The " *this is a part of my life now* " phase of reading one piece is both the most entertaining and most terrifying part of reading one piece. It's been eight years and the looming shadow of the end it's still there.
Yeah, this is kinda hard to explain sometimes. I have a cute little Luffy paperweight on my desk at work and trying to explain, when asked about it, is tough. Just saying that it's a manga/animated series I've followed since I was a kid and have a strong emotional attachment to works. But sells it short. Explaining that something like that has legitimately become part of my life and will leave a bit of a hole when it ends is hard to understand for people.
Almost 9 for me, I ended highschool, started and ended the uni and now I am working a full-time job. Many things and people changed during this time, but One Piece was always there and I'm glad it still is.
I understand why people compare Nami's moment to Usopp's. But I think there are some major distinctions that are being overlooked. Ussop not only had the choice & ability to escape, he wasn't entirely outclassed by his opponent. In fact, he was still able to beat his opponent. Nami, by contrast, was not only weaker than Ulti, she wasn't even in the same league as her, and had no means of escaping. So it was impossible for Nami to stand up to Ulti physically or run. Nami **only** had two choices: Deny her captain's dream or die. Bellemere also faced the impossible: She couldn't run, or beat Arlong. Her **only** two options were death or deny her kids. So in that moment, Nami knew that saying Luffy would not stop until he become Pirate King were going to be her last words. She chose death.

Best part of the way the rooftop was showing the symbolism. Till now, whenever we faced the emperors, the emperors dwarved over the characters, like a symbolism that the emperors were at the next level. But this rooftop panel, the Emperors and the worst gen are panelled in same frame level, like they were on the same plane now. It was just so badass. Also absolutely love that most of the ancient beasts were from a similar age except for the sabretooth, which lived 10000 years ago, while everyother Dino and Spider were in Jurassic Cretacious period
I'm so tired of the community mainly focusing on the fights for the wrong reasons! I love your take and how you always notice the small details and appreciate the actual story and not the power scaling. Like seriously it's an amazing, deep, detailed story and people keep talking about how that one is stronger than this one and this move shouldn't have impact. So tiring. You are so refreshing!!

Magikarp, as you can easily see put together, is based on the same legend, so when this reveal came the whole community was laughing about Kaido having the Magikarp Magikarp no Mi
Though, Kaido is the Azure Dragon. Which is a different mythology than that of the Koi one. A group of Koi tried to climb a waterfall, which went on for one hundred years, to finally one Koi succeeded, and was rewarded by spirits, with a transformation, into, a Golden Dragon.
@@Atzumou_ Yeah, he usually does mix and match. The pheasant, dog and monkey are supposed to bee friends and allies, not the 3 main weapons of the main enemy faction (Momotaro); Luffy is the monkey, but Nami gets the flying cloud and extending rod (Journey to the West); and so on

What I mean is that he takes concepts from them, and apply them differently, like, again with Momotaro, you have Momo clearly representing him, going to Onigashima to fight the ogres, but Tama is the one that feeds dango to the animais to befriend them
I love Momo's character. He has grown so much and when you realise that for him its been only a few months since his family died, then he was chased all over the world and ended up eating a devil fruit he had no idea about. What a rough experience he has had The kid went through a lot and Oda so carefully grew him and planted seeds about his fear of heights and back story all building to the point where he declares he will be the Shogun of Wano He is basically the ultimate realisation of the royalty in distress trope that Oda loves, and Oda has spent over 300 chapters crafting it

Usopp and Nami also had a conversation in Act 2 about what they would do if they were tortured for info and how they wouldn't last a few minutes, and it was so amazing to see her still keep her integrity and faith in Luffy while being beaten by Ulti. Wano has been my favorite arc so far and it's so nice to see your excitement for the story and it has really reinvigorated my hype for the rest of this arc and the story as a whole!
Don’t worry Merph, while you might not get another thousand chapters you’ll probably have another 6 years of the series. Oda thinks it’ll be five but the man is pathologically incapable of writing this story in concisely (which I am not complaining about, I absolutely love it!)
Not even sure 6 years is enough honestly, the last war should be the last and biggest saga and there might be another one before that,, If we say oda releases 45 chapters a year (which he probably will release less than) 6 years would be 270 chapters

Damn Murphy really popped off when it was the Samurais vs Kaido. :o Also Kaido has a strange sense of honor to him. During the Oden flashback he told Oden he wasnt happy with how he won cause of the dirty trick, so he killed the woman that allowed him to land his blow.
Can I just say, in chapter 1000 when Luffy punches Kaido he calls out the attack Red Roc (Roc being a mythical bird) which references red hawk, the move Luffy learns and uses in respect for Ace. So you have a stronger version of the punch Luffy uses to mimic Ace, but also when he punches Kaido it is in the same spot that Ace punched the statue of Kaido. So in that moment when he punches Kaido, it's both Luffy and Ace punching him together. It's just super satisfying to know that Ace essentially also gets to punch Kaido and knock him down for everything he's done and Ace also gets to keep his promise to Tama and to Yamato by coming back to free them from Kaido, even if it's only in spirit.

I'm pretty sure that a lot of people actually died to the ice demon plaugue, but none of the important named characters died, thus leading feeling like there wasn't much impact. The whole thing of showing off that there was an antidote was basically a sadistic ploy by Queen in taunting everyone by showing that there was hope, but keeping it just out of reach. Even if they did get the antidote, there would've only been enough to cure maybe a few people, thus adding to the despair. The critical mistake Queen made was underestimating Chopper's abilities as a doctor in being able to replicate the antidote so fast and have enough to cure everyone still standing - friend and foe alike.
Ch 1000 really was a special occasion for all One Piece fans. Something so cathartic yet exciting about recognizing your journey, but being pumped with the determination to press forward no matter who stands in our way! And all for the pursuit of a dream that doesn't even tie to the One Piece! We're all very excited to see what Luffy's true dream is and I'm happy to see you are too! The raid is just chock full of hype, dinos, mini lore drops (the DAWN of the world, the D, Poneglyphs!!!), and so so much action, but action that's actually hard not to get wrapped up in even if you're not a fight person! The buildup for the Scabbards and Wano is so deep and extensive that no matter where they are this raid, their efforts are both wanted and appreciated. Can't wait for you to be caught up! :)

- The name Tobi Roppo would translate to "Flying Six", in case that's easier to remember. Ulti and Page One are indeed the highlight of that group. Also, aside from Drake, all the members - as is the case for most of Kaido's people - are named after card games. - I would theorize that Marco considers Pops' village safe as a combination of it being hidden, and now Weevil having lost his warlord status being hunted down by Marines again, making him less able to move around freely. - Big Mom's kids getting kicked down the waterfall became kind of a meme among readers. One joke was along the lines of "which flying devil fruit user is going to kick them down the waterfall next? My money's on Pel?" - Nami's "Luffy will be pirate king" moment was also interesting for Usopp, because while he was urging Nami to just lie to save herself, he himself had this exact same moment back in Alabasta, and he couldn't take his own advice back then. There's even the callback of Ulti giving him a similar X-ray skull fracture to the one that he got from Mr. 4 back then. - We're in Roof Piece now people! Almost caught up to us weekly readers!
Well, in Drake's case it's because he is the outlier of the Flying 6 in the way he was recruited. But regarding the whole card theme of the Beast Pirates, X Drake - whose actual name is Diez Drake - is grouped together with the Three Calamaties. King, Queen, Jack, X/Diez ("diez" = Spanish for 10)
Adding to the Marco part, he clarified he might be late, so he had something to do before going. That something was clearly getting Izo, but at the same time he can have gone to Vista or Jozu, or even Squidward, to keep an eye on the village
It's crazy that Merphy was in Impel Down just 6 months ago, and now she's almost caught up to us. It really brings a tear to the eye to see a new One Piece fan catch up and fall in love with the series.
I think the best part of this is seeing the point of view and feelings of someone who's binge reading/watching opposed to those who have been in this journey for a long time (for instance, her views on SH together again after some chapters vs. the literal eternity that we had without Zoro)
Momo has been built up into an incredible character. I absolutely love him as a character now. I have never hated him as a character like so many others did, but now I've come to love him. What an incredibly well written kid. He's been through so much and he just deserves better. He deserved to have a childhood, the one that he never really had.
Oda has said that the reason Black Maria looks normal is because she's incredibly vain so she took a bunch of drugs and medicine to alter her zoan form kinda like chopper's rumble balls in reverse

I think it's understated how much growth Nami and Ussop undergo in this arc and how much of a hidden mvp Ussop has been in the raid and for me, this scene with Nami and Ulti nailed it, the amount of courage in the face of death and loyalty towards Luffy that she shows in this scene is amazing and I kinda understand Ussop's thoughts about Nami lying, he wished she did cuz they had no help, no cavalry to save them and so he did not want to see his friend getting killed like that, but I bet that if he was the one in danger he wouldn't falter, he would bargain and stall but in the end he wouldn't betray his trust on Luffy achieving his dream.
@@skeletonghost610 I think that's part of why oda drew the parallel to usopp's fight in alabasta, to make it clear that even though when he's on the outside he's rooting for nami to make the choice that hurts her the least, he would and already has done the same stubborn shit in the same situation. it's kind of this beautiful thing because we get to see how much usopp cares about nami while still seeing their absolute trust in and dedication to Luffy.
The implication is that Marco could leave Whitebeard's village because Whitebeard's "son" is not a warlord anymore and is now preoccupied by all the marines chaisng after him. It's never directly stated to be the reason but that's what I'm guessing.
Can be that, can be someone else looking after the village (let's say Vista or Jozu), or can even be both. He said he might arrive late, and he didn't leave immediately, so he can easily have called for someone to fill in
I really do think that Kaido did not expect Oden to survive the boiling and he seems genuenly upset that he has to kill him despite giving his word that Oden could live. Like, he won't jeopardize his plan, he is not a good guy. But he would prefer to stick to his personal code. Also, I think it's a cool small detail that never really gets any emphasis so perhaps I am looking too much into it - but it starts to make much more sense as to why Kaido spared Momonosuke... after all he literally had a child pretty much the same age.
I think that scene explains Kaidou’s depression. Deep down he’s ashamed about how he killed Oden; he has this death wish that he’ll never really fulfill because he’s actually yearning for a true battle to the death with Oden.
He clearly has some form of honour because he killed Higurashi for interfering in his and Oden’s duel He also respects his child’s pronouns but that opens the whole Yamato debate
Kaido shooting Oden is just ending his misery as respect for him. At that point Oden knows and feels he couldnt move his lower body anymore. And Kaido realizes that Oden is already half dead. He made Oden's death easier and honourable. Kaido respects Oden strength so much.
I personally think Yamato is gonna join the SHs but Momo would be interesting. I didn’t put that much thought into the dawn of the world thing until now. Maybe Wano is where the final battle will take place and they’ll have to comeback and when they do Momo will help them somehow? Idk I’m spitballing here
The first chapter in One Piece is called Romance Dawn. We see Roger kick start the great pirate age on his execution block, fellow by Luffy interacting with Shanks and all that it end with Luffy making a promise to Shanks that he will become a great pirate someday then it cuts forward to Luffy setting out to Sea to start his adventure. The Yonko represent the gatekeeper of the pirate age Whitebeard BM and Kaido all need to be cleaned for the next generation to take over something 20 years in the making. Oda has spent years building this theme along with setting up the pieces.
One of the panels that most stuck with me was the one of Zoro slashing Apoo and giving Chopper the antidote, that's when he realized that they'd been approaching the raid too lightheartedly, but what made it more impactful was that it came right after seeing Kiku's arm fall down from the rooftop. As soon as he saw her arm, his tone shifted, one of the ice demons attacked him, he cut him down without looking, he even told Queen he had no time to waste on his games. He realized that even wasting seconds could cost lives. Great moment.

56:26 The problem with Oda is not that he “doesn’t kill”, it’s that he doesn’t kill named characters often and when he does kill off characters, they’re no named background characters. Background characters die as early as Alabasta, but Oda doesn’t focus on them or really acknowledges it but they do die.
So that pretty much just means he doesn’t kill. I mean whether they die or don’t, it doesn’t affect the story in anyway. The whole issue of Oda not killing character is because he just doesn’t kill relevant characters. And he sometimes still doesn’t kill no named background characters like in Punk Hazard.
@@PolarisVan Punk Hazard is a good example. There should've been a couple of deaths and 1 confirmed death (Monet). Some of Smoker's men should be dead from the explosion that was caused by setting Smiley on fire, but we don't see Smoker reporting their deaths or remarking that he lost some men. Oda leaves it to the reader to come to the conclusion that background characters die in the "big conflict" of the arc. We didn't get a body count in Alabasta, nor in Marineford, but we know people died.
Well, yeah, Zoro keeps cutting people, and Robin has broken SO MANY SPINES that they both have a massive kill-count, but it's always fodder, barely ever a character that plays a role in the story beyond being red shirts from Star Trek
The Ulti and Nami/Usopp moment should also remind you of Usopp's declaration in Alabasta. Usopp saying just lie and run, when he didn't follow his own advice in Alabasta.
I agree, that while Usopp didn't run, he still had the ability to beat his opponent. So him not running wasn't an immediate death sentence. Nami was facing an opponent she had zero change of beating. She faced certain death.
When it comes to Robin and Jimbei -- there's absolutely a dynamic there, but it's not romantic, it's a familial dynamic: Each Strawhat fills a role in an archetypical Japanese family. I think Oda has said something about this before but it's how I see it whether he has or hasn't. Robin and Franky are the mother and father. They look after the rest while also acting independently. Brook is the paternal grandfather -- seen as more of a lackadaisical figure, full of rudeness, mischief and outward, expressive love. Jimbei is the maternal father -- a more stern, serious figure who expresses his love in more reserved, private ways. Zoro -- eldest son Nami -- eldest daughter Sanji -- second son (ironically) Usopp and Luffy -- interchangeable 3rd and 4th sons. Chopper -- Youngest son My best examples: Robin and Chopper are like a mother and young child (board games in Skypeia anyone?) Franky and Luffy in Dressrosa, Franky guiding Luffy about how the criminal underworld works. Luffy and Brook at the dinner table in Thriller Bark. Luffy and Jimbei post-Marineford -- a grandfather trying to straighten out an unruly child. Usopp and Franky's shared engineering. First and Second sons fighting like cat and dog, with the eldest sister having to play peacekeeper. Franky and Robin whenever they're together act like a stable married couple, supporting one another. I might just be mad, but it's all very much there. Pardon my rambling!!
This tracks because since Chopper joins the crew Oda always includes panels of Zoro looking after him(eldest bro looking after baby bro) it’s never really focused on which is why it’s one of my favorite things in OP

Im really glad you mentioned how interesting Kaido is as a character, because i think he is quite underated since he is kind of a new character and we don`t really know him that well. Once Wano its over im confident saying that Kaido is going to be in my top 3 villians probably surpassing even Doflaming... I just love how wise he sounds whenever hes talking and giving speeches about the meaning of having an "honorable death" i can just tell he is a very complex character without knowing much about him or his past (i hope when get some kind of flashback for him). The way i see him is that of an old veteran who has experienced a lot of hardships and pain over the years and just wants to rest but yet... he can`t, i feel he is kinda forcing himself to play a "villain" role just to have a glorious death. Man i just feel a bit bad for him idk why and at the same time love his character and role in the story
You perfectly described how every fan felt after reaching chapter 1000. The shock that you actually sat through so much story, but feeling like it’s nowhere near enough for you still.
Wano is the first arc that I really love reading week to week. Each chapter is just better than the one before, everything is just so hype, everything feels sooo intense. Its such a good arc.
Chapter 1000 really shows us that Luffy has an extra layer to his dream that we don’t know about! HIS TRUE DREAM! The fact that Luffy told Sabo, and Ace - but we didn’t see it, and the fact that Shanks said Luffy said the same thing as Roger to Rayleigh wasn’t that huge until we got Ch1000. This shows us that Luffy’s TRUE DREAM is not to be Pirate King (because Roger’s dream wasn’t to be Pirate King, since the title didn’t exist back then)!

Also Oda drew Black Maria as a proper Spider-hybrid in SBS. The Explanation was that Queen helped her modify her transformation (similar to how Chopper does with Rumble Balls).

They have been apart since Dressrosa. I think the double spread in 989 (up 1000) was the first panel they where all together since early Dressrosa (701 if I'm not mistaken) almost 7 years prior. Also the red roc panel in chapter 1000 echoes the time Luffy beat the pacifista right after the TS

@23:45 it’s a little bit of reading between the lines, but with the de-establishment of the warlord system, the marines are after Weevil, so Marco probably made the gamble that he way more to worry about than going after Whitebeard’s village, giving him the chance to come to Wano

the words that Luffy said which were the same as Roger's...this has been hinted at since Rayleigh had the flashback of Shanks talking to him about Luffy. We just never knew the severity and that it was something *we* haven't heard Luffy say. Whatever Luffy and Roger have said, it has become a mystery almost as grand as the Will of D, the void century and Joyboy. Maybe it's all one big mystery but it's the most intriguing one I've ever come across in all fiction and ongoing for over 20 years

Something that I like about scratchmen apoo that I'm not sure is intentional but is cool either way, his crew is the numbers right? These giant mosters most crews would have to work together against to defeat? And the way to fight him is by stopping yourself from hearing, meaning that exploiting his weakness shuts off your communication making fighting the numbers almost impossible for crews that aren't as stupidly strong as the strawhats.

E.g I compared Nami scene with usopp scene in alabasta and didn't feel much impact but now I am thinking about nami's mom situation, the scene hit harder. Have to say, Merphy's focus are different but hearing her thoughts adds more enjoyment to the wano arc for me
Once you’re caught up, I think you should look into vivre cards and the sbs Oda does. Since the story is so big there’s not enough time to put everything in so this gives information like why Black Maria spider looks that way and other minor or major things

When their shadows, still retaining their whole appearance returned, their bodies matched them, erasing consequences, same as when Moria made Oars arms stretch, or turned him into a ball. As long as the shadow keeps its original form, there are no consequences to any shenanigan brought by that fruit
Chapter 1000 was amazing symbolism! Luffy taking the steps to the roof, showing his growth from the beginning to taking the stage with the big boys. Before the raid begins we get an epic Luffy line, "When you're at sea you fight Pirates."
Glad you enjoyed the section of Luffy, Zoro, Kidd, and Killer entering the party. Everyone who is anime-only hates that part because the production company had Tama's flashback happen nearly a dozen times. It took forever during that part, which is very unfortunate for people to end up hating Tama because of it. Also, yes, there were a number of people that pointed out how Nami refusing to deny Luffy fit very well with Bellemere refusing to deny her children. I mentioned during the Flashback review episode that a lot of that was what the Straw Hats had been told by Kinemon on that mountain before Kaido first initially beat Luffy, and at the time I said that some of the flashback was from another source. That other source is Oden's journal which we now know Yamato has. I'm not sure if you missed it, but Luffy did break the chains on Yamato. So they shouldn't have the chains anymore. Soba-man? No, he's Soba-MASK. It was Nami that mentioned running away before Franky declares that their captain will be the Pirate King, so he doesn't need to run from a mere Emperor. "When they're all standing there with their poses." I had that manga panel as my laptop background for a year. I then replaced it when it showed up in the anime since I wanted a color version. Also, this is where the anime reached episode 1000. So you can see the difference between chapter and episode numbers with how much longer it took to get to Luffy's chapter 1000. The person Hawkins and Queen were talking about was Drake. There isn't a more hidden meaning (as far as we've seen), but Drake also wasn't the assumed person when we were reading weekly. It seemed like Whos Who wanted to fight Queen and Hawkins referring to someone else, but the anime showed it was more explicitly Drake they were all planning on attacking. So it all happened just then. I don't remember Carrot and Wanda taking down Perospero, but maybe it was just a shot of them doing some really harmful attacks on him. Kaido's ability to move the island is based on the mythology that his devil fruit is based on. I don't know the details, but I believe it fits in with his strength and how his flying ability works.
Love That your so close to weekly and, no you don't need to change your energy, this is how we all look and seem to the people around us on a weekly basis, while we read the chapters, I've had people ask me what's going on, cause I've yelped, laughed, gasped out loud so many times with this story, so I'm happy to see you enjoy it just as much as the rest of the community.
I am unable to continue watching at this point for I'm an anime only. It's been a good ride and it has been wonderful to watch your journey. It was a mix of Nostalgia, validation, and getting to watch someone go from casual to fangirl. It was excellent. I'll come back to this video after we're on the roof and the plague has been cured.
Yeah so to me part of why wano feels so emotional and different and nostalgic is it's like a coronation for Luffy. The setting, the opponents, the BADASS CAPE, the demeanor of Luffy, the leadership, the stakes, Luffy has NEVER looked so ready to actually find the one piece. If they make it out of wano there is *literally* nobody in the world who can stop them from their dream

Here we go! The best part of the Wano arc. Roof Piece is so amazing. I absolutely love ACT 3. Especially with Jinbe finally on our side. Kaido's PTSD with the scabbards is easily one of my favorite things to come out of it along with the Oden style moment. The Straw Hats finally came together after 7 years! Queen, Jinbe, Sanji and Yamato were the characters that really stood out to me despite not being the main focus. Edit: Congratulations on surpassing anime only viewers. Ever since you really got into One Piece, I've been waiting for Merphy to get to Onigashima. I can't say how happy I am now that you're almost caught up.
Hey merphy, not sure if you are gonna read this comment, but it's related to chopper: In my mind, the way oda resolved the ice oni virus is a resemblance from his origin story: the ice that envolves the battlefield and the coldness of his home town, and the omage done to hiruluk by making a healing powder scatter through the air that can heal an entire country. For me, one of the most underrated moments of the arc.
Oda's art style is just peaking, he makes it look so simple and seamless. He must've changed his pen in the last few years and it gives the lines a beautiful feel
One of the best thing the past year has brought is Merphy with One Piece. I have loved the series since 2019 and watching Merphy love my favorite series of all time makes me fall in love with One Piece all over again.
Fun fact about the panels of Luffy and Zoro remembering Tama eating the oshiruko in cahotsr 980, the angle at which each remember Tama matches the angle each were seating when they saw her eat. Also personally the panel of Nami saying Luffy will be the pirate king is one of my favorite moments in the series
Whitebeards alledged son was one of the Warlords so he is currently being chased by the Marines now so Marco is no longer worried about him attacking Whitebeards village.
Merphy has a way to really bring out the emotions I felt first time either watching an episode or reading a new chapter, almost to the point where I have tears in my eyes. The way she reviews it really justifies how I felt during that moment but amplifies to a bigger scale because she mentions so many things that I haven’t really thought about looking back at it. But when I do… man, is it beautiful. 🥲Can’t believe she’s basically week to week now. What a journey!

Funny enough, Oda said he didn’t plan anything special for chapter 1000. The story just happened to be in the right spot. Much to his relief because he said everyone around him was expecting something HUGE for 1000.

It took Oda about seven years (SEVEN YEARS) to finally have all the Strawhats (+the newest member) on the same place working together (Dressrosa was when they got separated and after that at least one member was always missing -the closest they got was Zou and Sanji was already missing there). I can't express with words how much I loved those manga chapters when I first read them. Seeing them finally working together after so long was... It was just the best.
The full page spread of them in the castle gave me chills

In the SBS volume 100, oda told us Ulti was born on the Grand Line 22 years ago. She and her brother Page One (two years after her, so 20 yo) were born to an unknown male pirate who eventually died. Kaido, who had been acquainted with their father, took the siblings in. Ulti eventually stole two Devil Fruits from Kaidou for herself and Page One to partake of, to make themselves into formidable fighting forces for Kaidou and thereby persevere in the Beasts Pirates, a crew in which only the strong survive. Eventually, the siblings both became Tobiroppo.

Just saying that it's a manga/animated series I've followed since I was a kid and have a strong emotional attachment to works. But sells it short.

Been 20 years for me.
Almost 9 for me, I ended highschool, started and ended the uni and now I am working a full-time job. Many things and people changed during this time, but One Piece was always there and I'm glad it still is.
I understand why people compare Nami's moment to Usopp's. But I think there are some major distinctions that are being overlooked.
Ussop not only had the choice & ability to escape, he wasn't entirely outclassed by his opponent. In fact, he was still able to beat his opponent. Nami, by contrast, was not only weaker than Ulti, she wasn't even in the same league as her, and had no means of escaping.
So it was impossible for Nami to stand up to Ulti physically or run. Nami **only** had two choices: Deny her captain's dream or die. Bellemere also faced the impossible: She couldn't run, or beat Arlong. Her **only** two options were death or deny her kids.
So in that moment, Nami knew that saying Luffy would not stop until he become Pirate King were going to be her last words. She chose death.
Goddamn. Thats powerful. You just made me love that scene more than I already did.

Best part of the way the rooftop was showing the symbolism. Till now, whenever we faced the emperors, the emperors dwarved over the characters, like a symbolism that the emperors were at the next level. But this rooftop panel, the Emperors and the worst gen are panelled in same frame level, like they were on the same plane now. It was just so badass.
Also absolutely love that most of the ancient beasts were from a similar age except for the sabretooth, which lived 10000 years ago, while everyother Dino and Spider were in Jurassic Cretacious period

Magikarp, as you can easily see put together, is based on the same legend, so when this reveal came the whole community was laughing about Kaido having the Magikarp Magikarp no Mi
Though, Kaido is the Azure Dragon. Which is a different mythology than that of the Koi one.
A group of Koi tried to climb a waterfall, which went on for one hundred years, to finally one Koi succeeded, and was rewarded by spirits, with a transformation, into, a Golden Dragon.

I love Momo's character. He has grown so much and when you realise that for him its been only a few months since his family died, then he was chased all over the world and ended up eating a devil fruit he had no idea about. What a rough experience he has had
The kid went through a lot and Oda so carefully grew him and planted seeds about his fear of heights and back story all building to the point where he declares he will be the Shogun of Wano
He is basically the ultimate realisation of the royalty in distress trope that Oda loves, and Oda has spent over 300 chapters crafting it

Usopp and Nami also had a conversation in Act 2 about what they would do if they were tortured for info and how they wouldn't last a few minutes, and it was so amazing to see her still keep her integrity and faith in Luffy while being beaten by Ulti. Wano has been my favorite arc so far and it's so nice to see your excitement for the story and it has really reinvigorated my hype for the rest of this arc and the story as a whole!

Don’t worry Merph, while you might not get another thousand chapters you’ll probably have another 6 years of the series. Oda thinks it’ll be five but the man is pathologically incapable of writing this story in concisely (which I am not complaining about, I absolutely love it!)
Not even sure 6 years is enough honestly, the last war should be the last and biggest saga and there might be another one before that,, If we say oda releases 45 chapters a year (which he probably will release less than) 6 years would be 270 chapters

Also Kaido has a strange sense of honor to him. During the Oden flashback he told Oden he wasnt happy with how he won cause of the dirty trick, so he killed the woman that allowed him to land his blow.
Can I just say, in chapter 1000 when Luffy punches Kaido he calls out the attack Red Roc (Roc being a mythical bird) which references red hawk, the move Luffy learns and uses in respect for Ace. So you have a stronger version of the punch Luffy uses to mimic Ace, but also when he punches Kaido it is in the same spot that Ace punched the statue of Kaido. So in that moment when he punches Kaido, it's both Luffy and Ace punching him together. It's just super satisfying to know that Ace essentially also gets to punch Kaido and knock him down for everything he's done and Ace also gets to keep his promise to Tama and to Yamato by coming back to free them from Kaido, even if it's only in spirit.

I'm pretty sure that a lot of people actually died to the ice demon plaugue, but none of the important named characters died, thus leading feeling like there wasn't much impact. The whole thing of showing off that there was an antidote was basically a sadistic ploy by Queen in taunting everyone by showing that there was hope, but keeping it just out of reach. Even if they did get the antidote, there would've only been enough to cure maybe a few people, thus adding to the despair. The critical mistake Queen made was underestimating Chopper's abilities as a doctor in being able to replicate the antidote so fast and have enough to cure everyone still standing - friend and foe alike.
Yeah, that's how I understood the situation as well.
Ch 1000 really was a special occasion for all One Piece fans. Something so cathartic yet exciting about recognizing your journey, but being pumped with the determination to press forward no matter who stands in our way! And all for the pursuit of a dream that doesn't even tie to the One Piece! We're all very excited to see what Luffy's true dream is and I'm happy to see you are too!
The raid is just chock full of hype, dinos, mini lore drops (the DAWN of the world, the D, Poneglyphs!!!), and so so much action, but action that's actually hard not to get wrapped up in even if you're not a fight person! The buildup for the Scabbards and Wano is so deep and extensive that no matter where they are this raid, their efforts are both wanted and appreciated. Can't wait for you to be caught up! :)
chapter 1000 is a milestone. i remember fondly when Hajime No Ippo reach chapter 1000 a few years ago. (it's still ongoing... chapter 1341 smh)

- The name Tobi Roppo would translate to "Flying Six", in case that's easier to remember. Ulti and Page One are indeed the highlight of that group. Also, aside from Drake, all the members - as is the case for most of Kaido's people - are named after card games.
- I would theorize that Marco considers Pops' village safe as a combination of it being hidden, and now Weevil having lost his warlord status being hunted down by Marines again, making him less able to move around freely.
- Big Mom's kids getting kicked down the waterfall became kind of a meme among readers. One joke was along the lines of "which flying devil fruit user is going to kick them down the waterfall next? My money's on Pel?"
- Nami's "Luffy will be pirate king" moment was also interesting for Usopp, because while he was urging Nami to just lie to save herself, he himself had this exact same moment back in Alabasta, and he couldn't take his own advice back then. There's even the callback of Ulti giving him a similar X-ray skull fracture to the one that he got from Mr. 4 back then.

Well, in Drake's case it's because he is the outlier of the Flying 6 in the way he was recruited. But regarding the whole card theme of the Beast Pirates, X Drake - whose actual name is Diez Drake - is grouped together with the Three Calamaties. King, Queen, Jack, X/Diez ("diez" = Spanish for 10)
Adding to the Marco part, he clarified he might be late, so he had something to do before going. That something was clearly getting Izo, but at the same time he can have gone to Vista or Jozu, or even Squidward, to keep an eye on the village

It's crazy that Merphy was in Impel Down just 6 months ago, and now she's almost caught up to us.
It really brings a tear to the eye to see a new One Piece fan catch up and fall in love with the series.
I think the best part of this is seeing the point of view and feelings of someone who's binge reading/watching opposed to those who have been in this journey for a long time (for instance, her views on SH together again after some chapters vs. the literal eternity that we had without Zoro)

Momo has been built up into an incredible character. I absolutely love him as a character now. I have never hated him as a character like so many others did, but now I've come to love him. What an incredibly well written kid. He's been through so much and he just deserves better. He deserved to have a childhood, the one that he never really had.
Oda has said that the reason Black Maria looks normal is because she's incredibly vain so she took a bunch of drugs and medicine to alter her zoan form kinda like chopper's rumble balls in reverse
Merphy thought Black maria was huge bc of her spider fruit lol but BM has the same horns as Yamato so she's prolly an oni and thats why she huge.
Agreed because the spider referenced has fossil records of being about 4 inches which is huge for a spider (but not massive or the biggest)

I love how Zoro, Sanji and Luffy all get heated when it comes to wasting food. It’s the one thing Sanji and Zoro can bond over since that’s how they are both introduced
I think it's understated how much growth Nami and Ussop undergo in this arc and how much of a hidden mvp Ussop has been in the raid and for me, this scene with Nami and Ulti nailed it, the amount of courage in the face of death and loyalty towards Luffy that she shows in this scene is amazing and I kinda understand Ussop's thoughts about Nami lying, he wished she did cuz they had no help, no cavalry to save them and so he did not want to see his friend getting killed like that, but I bet that if he was the one in danger he wouldn't falter, he would bargain and stall but in the end he wouldn't betray his trust on Luffy achieving his dream.
I agree completely. I feel like if they were swapped, Nami would be telling Usopp to lie while he makes the declaration.
@@skeletonghost610 I think that's part of why oda drew the parallel to usopp's fight in alabasta, to make it clear that even though when he's on the outside he's rooting for nami to make the choice that hurts her the least, he would and already has done the same stubborn shit in the same situation. it's kind of this beautiful thing because we get to see how much usopp cares about nami while still seeing their absolute trust in and dedication to Luffy.
The implication is that Marco could leave Whitebeard's village because Whitebeard's "son" is not a warlord anymore and is now preoccupied by all the marines chaisng after him. It's never directly stated to be the reason but that's what I'm guessing.

I really do think that Kaido did not expect Oden to survive the boiling and he seems genuenly upset that he has to kill him despite giving his word that Oden could live. Like, he won't jeopardize his plan, he is not a good guy. But he would prefer to stick to his personal code.
Also, I think it's a cool small detail that never really gets any emphasis so perhaps I am looking too much into it - but it starts to make much more sense as to why Kaido spared Momonosuke... after all he literally had a child pretty much the same age.
I think that scene explains Kaidou’s depression. Deep down he’s ashamed about how he killed Oden; he has this death wish that he’ll never really fulfill because he’s actually yearning for a true battle to the death with Oden.
He clearly has some form of honour because he killed Higurashi for interfering in his and Oden’s duel
He also respects his child’s pronouns but that opens the whole Yamato debate
Kaido shooting Oden is just ending his misery as respect for him. At that point Oden knows and feels he couldnt move his lower body anymore. And Kaido realizes that Oden is already half dead. He made Oden's death easier and honourable. Kaido respects Oden strength so much.
I personally think Yamato is gonna join the SHs but Momo would be interesting. I didn’t put that much thought into the dawn of the world thing until now. Maybe Wano is where the final battle will take place and they’ll have to comeback and when they do Momo will help them somehow? Idk I’m spitballing here
The first chapter in One Piece is called Romance Dawn. We see Roger kick start the great pirate age on his execution block, fellow by Luffy interacting with Shanks and all that it end with Luffy making a promise to Shanks that he will become a great pirate someday then it cuts forward to Luffy setting out to Sea to start his adventure. The Yonko represent the gatekeeper of the pirate age Whitebeard BM and Kaido all need to be cleaned for the next generation to take over something 20 years in the making.
Oda has spent years building this theme along with setting up the pieces.
I think when Oda's done with this arc we're just gonna move on to another island. Wano needs rest. We've already spent too much time on this island.

One of the panels that most stuck with me was the one of Zoro slashing Apoo and giving Chopper the antidote, that's when he realized that they'd been approaching the raid too lightheartedly, but what made it more impactful was that it came right after seeing Kiku's arm fall down from the rooftop. As soon as he saw her arm, his tone shifted, one of the ice demons attacked him, he cut him down without looking, he even told Queen he had no time to waste on his games. He realized that even wasting seconds could cost lives. Great moment.

56:26 The problem with Oda is not that he “doesn’t kill”, it’s that he doesn’t kill named characters often and when he does kill off characters, they’re no named background characters.
Background characters die as early as Alabasta, but Oda doesn’t focus on them or really acknowledges it but they do die.
So that pretty much just means he doesn’t kill. I mean whether they die or don’t, it doesn’t affect the story in anyway. The whole issue of Oda not killing character is because he just doesn’t kill relevant characters. And he sometimes still doesn’t kill no named background characters like in Punk Hazard.
@@PolarisVan Punk Hazard is a good example. There should've been a couple of deaths and 1 confirmed death (Monet). Some of Smoker's men should be dead from the explosion that was caused by setting Smiley on fire, but we don't see Smoker reporting their deaths or remarking that he lost some men.
Oda leaves it to the reader to come to the conclusion that background characters die in the "big conflict" of the arc. We didn't get a body count in Alabasta, nor in Marineford, but we know people died.

What do we really know about Pell?
Well, yeah, Zoro keeps cutting people, and Robin has broken SO MANY SPINES that they both have a massive kill-count, but it's always fodder, barely ever a character that plays a role in the story beyond being red shirts from Star Trek
The Ulti and Nami/Usopp moment should also remind you of Usopp's declaration in Alabasta. Usopp saying just lie and run, when he didn't follow his own advice in Alabasta.
I agree, that while Usopp didn't run, he still had the ability to beat his opponent. So him not running wasn't an immediate death sentence. Nami was facing an opponent she had zero change of beating. She faced certain death.
and somehow some people are still convinced he is a coward.
When it comes to Robin and Jimbei -- there's absolutely a dynamic there, but it's not romantic, it's a familial dynamic:
Each Strawhat fills a role in an archetypical Japanese family. I think Oda has said something about this before but it's how I see it whether he has or hasn't.
Robin and Franky are the mother and father. They look after the rest while also acting independently.
Brook is the paternal grandfather -- seen as more of a lackadaisical figure, full of rudeness, mischief and outward, expressive love.
Jimbei is the maternal father -- a more stern, serious figure who expresses his love in more reserved, private ways.
Zoro -- eldest son
Nami -- eldest daughter
Sanji -- second son (ironically)
Usopp and Luffy -- interchangeable 3rd and 4th sons.
Chopper -- Youngest son

Im really glad you mentioned how interesting Kaido is as a character, because i think he is quite underated since he is kind of a new character and we don`t really know him that well. Once Wano its over im confident saying that Kaido is going to be in my top 3 villians probably surpassing even Doflaming... I just love how wise he sounds whenever hes talking and giving speeches about the meaning of having an "honorable death" i can just tell he is a very complex character without knowing much about him or his past (i hope when get some kind of flashback for him). The way i see him is that of an old veteran who has experienced a lot of hardships and pain over the years and just wants to rest but yet... he can`t, i feel he is kinda forcing himself to play a "villain" role just to have a glorious death. Man i just feel a bit bad for him idk why and at the same time love his character and role in the story
You perfectly described how every fan felt after reaching chapter 1000. The shock that you actually sat through so much story, but feeling like it’s nowhere near enough for you still.
Wano is the first arc that I really love reading week to week. Each chapter is just better than the one before, everything is just so hype, everything feels sooo intense. Its such a good arc.
The crew all being together has been something close to 10 years in real time
Chapter 1000 really shows us that Luffy has an extra layer to his dream that we don’t know about! HIS TRUE DREAM!
The fact that Luffy told Sabo, and Ace - but we didn’t see it, and the fact that Shanks said Luffy said the same thing as Roger to Rayleigh wasn’t that huge until we got Ch1000.
This shows us that Luffy’s TRUE DREAM is not to be Pirate King (because Roger’s dream wasn’t to be Pirate King, since the title didn’t exist back then)!
When I read the title chapter of chapter 1000 I teared up. Luffy man ... one of my fav chapters ever.
The titles of chapter 999 and 1000 go together. I feel it's to show how much Yamato has been waiting to meet Luffy.

They have been apart since Dressrosa. I think the double spread in 989 (up 1000) was the first panel they where all together since early Dressrosa (701 if I'm not mistaken) almost 7 years prior.
Also the red roc panel in chapter 1000 echoes the time Luffy beat the pacifista right after the TS
I like to imagine that Robin is always with Jembei in Wano because she wants to make sure the new member of the team feels welcomed at every moment.

i started reading one piece after the timeskip (ep 500.) started reading the weekly again at chapter 1000. now i just can't stop ! Today was a good day (no spoilers)
the words that Luffy said which were the same as Roger's...this has been hinted at since Rayleigh had the flashback of Shanks talking to him about Luffy. We just never knew the severity and that it was something *we* haven't heard Luffy say. Whatever Luffy and Roger have said, it has become a mystery almost as grand as the Will of D, the void century and Joyboy.
Maybe it's all one big mystery but it's the most intriguing one I've ever come across in all fiction and ongoing for over 20 years

Something that I like about scratchmen apoo that I'm not sure is intentional but is cool either way, his crew is the numbers right? These giant mosters most crews would have to work together against to defeat? And the way to fight him is by stopping yourself from hearing, meaning that exploiting his weakness shuts off your communication making fighting the numbers almost impossible for crews that aren't as stupidly strong as the strawhats.
I like ho he i so buggyeske and a erk but really fun.

Once you’re caught up, I think you should look into vivre cards and the sbs Oda does. Since the story is so big there’s not enough time to put everything in so this gives information like why Black Maria spider looks that way and other minor or major things

Chapter 1000 was amazing symbolism! Luffy taking the steps to the roof, showing his growth from the beginning to taking the stage with the big boys.

Glad you enjoyed the section of Luffy, Zoro, Kidd, and Killer entering the party. Everyone who is anime-only hates that part because the production company had Tama's flashback happen nearly a dozen times. It took forever during that part, which is very unfortunate for people to end up hating Tama because of it.
Also, yes, there were a number of people that pointed out how Nami refusing to deny Luffy fit very well with Bellemere refusing to deny her children.
I mentioned during the Flashback review episode that a lot of that was what the Straw Hats had been told by Kinemon on that mountain before Kaido first initially beat Luffy, and at the time I said that some of the flashback was from another source. That other source is Oden's journal which we now know Yamato has.
I'm not sure if you missed it, but Luffy did break the chains on Yamato. So they shouldn't have the chains anymore.

"When they're all standing there with their poses." I had that manga panel as my laptop background for a year. I then replaced it when it showed up in the anime since I wanted a color version. Also, this is where the anime reached episode 1000. So you can see the difference between chapter and episode numbers with how much longer it took to get to Luffy's chapter 1000.
The person Hawkins and Queen were talking about was Drake. There isn't a more hidden meaning (as far as we've seen), but Drake also wasn't the assumed person when we were reading weekly. It seemed like Whos Who wanted to fight Queen and Hawkins referring to someone else, but the anime showed it was more explicitly Drake they were all planning on attacking. So it all happened just then.
I don't remember Carrot and Wanda taking down Perospero, but maybe it was just a shot of them doing some really harmful attacks on him.
Kaido's ability to move the island is based on the mythology that his devil fruit is based on. I don't know the details, but I believe it fits in with his strength and how his flying ability works.

Yeah so to me part of why wano feels so emotional and different and nostalgic is it's like a coronation for Luffy. The setting, the opponents, the BADASS CAPE, the demeanor of Luffy, the leadership, the stakes, Luffy has NEVER looked so ready to actually find the one piece. If they make it out of wano there is *literally* nobody in the world who can stop them from their dream

Here we go! The best part of the Wano arc. Roof Piece is so amazing. I absolutely love ACT 3. Especially with Jinbe finally on our side.
Kaido's PTSD with the scabbards is easily one of my favorite things to come out of it along with the Oden style moment. The Straw Hats finally came together after 7 years! Queen, Jinbe, Sanji and Yamato were the characters that really stood out to me despite not being the main focus.
Edit: Congratulations on surpassing anime only viewers. Ever since you really got into One Piece, I've been waiting for Merphy to get to Onigashima. I can't say how happy I am now that you're almost caught up.
Still will say the oden flashback is the best part in one piece and wano

In my mind, the way oda resolved the ice oni virus is a resemblance from his origin story: the ice that envolves the battlefield and the coldness of his home town, and the omage done to hiruluk by making a healing powder scatter through the air that can heal an entire country.
For me, one of the most underrated moments of the arc.
Oda's art style is just peaking, he makes it look so simple and seamless. He must've changed his pen in the last few years and it gives the lines a beautiful feel
One of the best thing the past year has brought is Merphy with One Piece. I have loved the series since 2019 and watching Merphy love my favorite series of all time makes me fall in love with One Piece all over again.
Fun fact about the panels of Luffy and Zoro remembering Tama eating the oshiruko in cahotsr 980, the angle at which each remember Tama matches the angle each were seating when they saw her eat.
Also personally the panel of Nami saying Luffy will be the pirate king is one of my favorite moments in the series

Whitebeards alledged son was one of the Warlords so he is currently being chased by the Marines now so Marco is no longer worried about him attacking Whitebeards village.
Merphy has a way to really bring out the emotions I felt first time either watching an episode or reading a new chapter, almost to the point where I have tears in my eyes. The way she reviews it really justifies how I felt during that moment but amplifies to a bigger scale because she mentions so many things that I haven’t really thought about looking back at it. But when I do… man, is it beautiful. 🥲Can’t believe she’s basically week to week now. What a journey!
