Love how Merphy was initially skeptical about things in the series like Sanji surviving on that island without food, now she's here with us getting hyped for Cartoon-God Luffy vs a giant dragon
To be fair, the word ridiculous can be used in all types of context cause it has many meanings, so I don't blame people for taking it as the strongest and others not. I personally feel it could be both of these, referring to the level of goofiness and strength. That's just my 2 cents.
@@saltshaker6002 Not based on the original Japanese version. The word they used (ふざける) clearly means ridiculous in the absurd, nonsense, funny or dumb sense of the word.
To join the series this late in the game and STILL not get spoiled on a single thing AND to be caught up right when 1043 and 1044 were released, her One Piece journey has been unreal. Not to mention shes already been called up to the Reverie.
The fact that merphy caught up at this timing is still crazy to me LOL. This chapter was perfect to me. Not to sound corny but this chapter made me tear up a little. Seeing luffy just laughing the whole chapter was beautiful. Luffy's ability being limited to his imagination is the PERFECT ability for him. And that gear 5 panel in the last page is a top 10 panel for me in One Piece
it literally created a big ass plot hole. U telling me the gorusei wanted this fruit for 800 years and they didn't do shit to get it from luffy??? I mean come on. @@sucukboyhelal1886 I mean chapter 1037 implies that they KNOW about a fruit where its real name has been changed, they just didnt know it was the gomu gomu no mi till recently... And also, the current gorosei havent been around for the last 800 years. Their not immortal beings, at least I dont think so. I wldnt jump to the conclusion that its a plothole since we clearly are missing a lot of info and context here
@@sucukboyhelal1886 They stated that it hasn't been awakened in 800 years. It was almost a rumor at this point. They also said the fruit is literally avoiding them. Being the incarnation of liberation, that's not a surprise.

It's also very ironic how the the Shandians were liberated from Enel by the person with the Nika fruit i.e. their God. Everyone was even praying to a God, if it existed. Skypeia arc was so beautifully crafted.
Skypeia keeps growing and growing in importance and is hugely linked to a lot of arcs down the line. It's ironic for it to be an arc that was like a detour or a side quest on their journey. And we have yet to explore the moon and Enel's future teased at the end of the arc. Since now we know about King's people, another race that were thought of as Gods, it's getting really intense. All of these races with wings that lived on the sky are sure to be relevant again
@@TwistDMetal I always thought they were crazy to even skip arcs. I mean filler I get but actual content produced by the author, not good. Besides, I really liked it from the beginning. It's peak exploration mixed with a tournament arc, plus relevant lore and introduction to dials, haki/mantra and the crazy good punch pre arc that got me hyped and intro to Blackbeard

It's amazing to me that 22 years later, I have to recontextualize the main character. Not because he's changed, but that we are only just now getting to know an important part of his character. Just like you I love the themes of this chapter. Luffy represents the juxtaposition of both inherited will and free will. Maybe some things are predetermined, and there might be an element of destiny, but the whole fiber of his being (quite literally) is flexibility and freedom.
I'm so glad someone that is typically outside the manga scene, was able to appreciate the incredible works of Oda. Your exposure to other literary works from notable authors offers an insight into your analysis of characters, themes and plot in a way that many manga-only fans can't appreciate. The fact that you joined this community as we share the excitement through some of the series' biggest moments is a huge facet in being able to appreciate the series for what it is, because it is the discussion and the theories and the "I can't wait till next week" that makes the One Piece manga so enticing! it would be amazing to hear your thoughts on episodic story versus reading/bingeing an entire book from cover to cover. Pros and cons?
One of the best parts of this chapter was Orochi Burning to death because a few chapters ago kawamatsu was saying "there's no honor in burning to death"
As I recall, Oda long ago said something along the lines of choosing Luffy's power to be what it was because he thought it was the most 'ridiculous' power for a main character.
He answered an SBS question what if a human ate the Hito Hito no mi? In reference to Chopper's fruit. Oda replied oh theyd become enlightened. We all thought oh he's foreshadowing the Buddha fruit of Sengoku. No he was trolling us all the way back in Water 7..
I just want to mention that although Luffy's comeback and the reveal of his devil fruit got me hyped, Hiyori's moment just hit me way harder. 20 years has this girl being dealing with the loss of her family and some of her loved ones; 20 years having to put an act due to the revenge she wants to succeed at; and some of those years she HAD to be near Orochi, who ironically sort of fell in love with her; and finally after all those years she can stop her act, reveal herself as the proud daughter of Kozuki Oden and just let all her rage and sadness flow as she finally takes revenge on the man who took everything from her. Luffy really got me hyped, but Hiyori got me tearing
I dunno, I feel ya but the thing is it's way more common for any medium to get me to tears than it is for me to get so hyped...I love me those tearjerk moments but this one felt pale in comparison to how monumental Luffy's development here feels. Haven't felt this rush since chapter 903

I really really love that Oda stuck to the soul of one piece and did what he really loves, and made Luffy's Strongest form a goofy funny form, and not something serious, it almost brings tears to my eyes, Honestly. Thank you Oda for doing what you love, It takes a lot of courage to be yourself, especially in a stage as this one, where the whole world is waiting, watching, and anticipating.
I *did* have tears in my eyes at the end of the chapter. I couldn't believe that somebody could create a powerup that was so cool and so absurdly thematically appropriate. We call him Goda for damn good reason.
The thing I loved the most about this chapter is that I as a reader was also infected by Luffy/Joyboy’s happiness. I found myself laughing and smile the whole way through, just as Oda/Joyboy intended
Ever since Haki was introduced, I feel as though we have been ignoring Devil Fruits. It's about time we go back to questioning how they came into existence, what is Vegapunk up to etc
Uuuuh, Devil Fruit powers where still a huge part of every single fight. It was always a combination of DF powers and haki when Luffy used his Gears. Same with Katakuri or Cracker etc.
@@OrokanaMkIII I had a theory that DF come from Nika. That's why the failed smile fruits make the afflicted laugh uncontrollably. And the 800 year gap that the WG is keeping a secret is a time period where DF never existed, but Nika created the DF by manifesting it into existence after the countries tied to the WG teamed up to take them down (them being the D clan, who I think is where Nika originates from).
Oh wow! Merphy was so hype about this chapter that she’s literally shaking in her voice and body with tears in her eyes. I LOVE IT! I’m so happy that you expected it but also didn’t expect to hit you this much. What an incredible time to be a One Piece fan!
After that chapter I immediately was taken back to the time when I thought how in the hell it is possible that Luffy can suddenly produce fire out of nowhere (Red Hawk). Then I always asked myself how in the world can Luffy change the trajectory of his fists when using Culverin against Doflamingo. And after that I had the same feeling when Luffy used Kong Organ Gun where he just let multiple fists appear out of nowhere. The hints have always been there that his fruit is something else! Oda is a mad freaking GENIUS!
And how is it that the smoke is consistently formed like a veil around Luffy while on G4? Rubber just doesn't do all that. This transformation is also a solution to a lot of questions on top of everything, it's fkng amazing.
Being a Zoan also explains a lot about Luffy's recovery time and how he certain wounds are just are not as deadly to him. It also explains how he could actually inflate his bones and have the air transfer between them.
Yeah, and when Kaido imitated the change of trajectory of his culverin that's where I thought that Luffy may be a Zoan as he could change and manipulate his body the way that some Zoans can.
Lucci mentioned in their fight that Luffy inflating his bones shouldn't increase his striking power, then got knocked the fuck out. Oda planned this out for a while.
Oda has already said that his favorite characters are the ones that allow for a comedic approach, and it makes me think a lot about how Big Mom and Luffy have so much in common, especially now with these revelations of the Straw Hat's power. It's as if Big Mom and Luffy came straight out of Disney studios, with their crazy creative skills, not to mention all the other similarities, like their unshakable determination (the young Linlin in Kaido's flashback says the exact same words as Luffy), the similar dreams of uniting peoples, the value for food and for those who feed them and, of course, the main thing in this chapter: the playful approach. I've always thought about it a lot, but now I'm sure: we've been following Big Mom for so long because Oda knows he has a space in her to do what he likes to do most, fun. It's not "meme", it's fun. And that's One Piece, the tale of a Fun Boy (JoyBoy).
The Yonko all as "potential" kings of pirates; Big Mom, Kaido doesn´t reach, Newgata doesn´t want and neither Shanks( it seems). Big Mom and Kaido have dual contrast with White Beard and Gol D Roger. Big Mom wants a family of all races, White Beard has a big family; Kaido wants to be a hero and be a King of Pirates, Gol D Roger was a hero and King of Pirates. Have another parallel between Yonkos too. Kaido and Big Mom were the heroes, but something go wrong; White Beard and Gol D. Roger fulfilled their dreams.

There has been this minor consenses floating around that Luffy‘s Gomu Gomu is one of the weaker fruits, but it’s so strong in his hands because he is so creative with it. Oda just flipped that 180 on it‘s head with this chapter and was like Luffy‘s fruit is the most broken because you can do anything as long as you‘re creative with it. I love that.
It’s interesting because in a way it doesn’t really change anything: what makes Luffy strong is his creativity. But at the same time it changes everything because now Luffy has directly inherited the will of previous liberators in One Piece’s world, and that’s pretty interesting.
That's only when it's awakened. It was clearly stated. And preawakening, we clearly saw all the limitations of the fruit. You shouldn't just decide to forget every single thing in the story up till this point
This is one of my favorite One Piece-related videos I have every watched. Raw emotion and passion but you're still able to articulate so well about themes and bring a completely different perspective than all the other chapter reaction videos. You are absolutely needed in the One Piece community more than a couple times a month
One Piece was trending at no. 1 on Twitter worldwide the day it came out! It's the first manga in history to have accomplished this! Btw, One Piece also reached 500 million copies in circulation, becoming the best selling series in history by one author, beating JK Rowling!
That's incredible! Here I thought only Demon Slayer and Attack on Titan could do that. One Piece is also number two all time behind only Superman in terms of comics and manga sales. It's done this in 25 years and Superman has been around for almost 100 years.

This chapter broke us all, so I love hearing you gush about it as much as the rest of us did 💗 I've been reading OP week to week almost 15 years now, and this is one of the few times a chapter has created such level of hype. There's a lot of exciting chapters in the story for sure, but this was HUGE. I'm still in awe of what Oda did. I'm waiting to see what happens during the fight, but so far it seems like Luffy's powers are something like... toon powers? Which is... it's just perfect? Like holy shit, I never thought it could be something SO perfect. For Luffy, because he's always had ridiculous abilities and his imagination to make use of what he had was always his strength... but also, if it's a power that makes people laugh, it just makes so much sense that it's something like toon powers, simultaneously funny AND powerful. I'm still amazed because NEVER in a million years I would've thought of that (not even with the common comparison of OP's style to cartoons!), and yet it makes so much sense now. Since I've been reading this manga weekly, it's so common for us fans to make theories that end up being wrong or are right in unexpected ways, and yet Oda keeps surprising me with things that are even better than what we could've imagined. This was an amazing chapter and I can't wait for the next one. Also... I'm still laughing at how Oda made you change your schedule, but can't blame you. You caught up in the most hype time we've had in a while, and that's saying a lot considering this arc has been incredible from start to finish.
I was about to go to bed but welp, Merphy dropped a new OP video. You actually joined the weekly crew at the perfect time! This chapter was straight 11/10 to me. I love how Gear 5th is so goofy. Truly the most Oda way to depict the most powerful form as the silliest. Luffy straight up pulled a Popeye there. I do think that zoans having their own will makes sense as all the objects that have "eaten" a devil fruit are zoan type. While I wasn't the biggest fan of Hiyori just standing there... menacingly, I can see why some people may like it. After giving such a powerful speech, I really wish she had slayed or at least defeated Orochi and then maybe spared him to end the cycle of hatred herself instead of it being resolved by some weird semi conscious remnant of the Kazenbo. And I get that a lot of people think its deep because Orochi essential doomed himself by wording his final command to Kanjuro by saying "lay OUR souls to rest" or maybe it was an accident (hard to tell) but I disagree. It would have been a lot more meaningful if Hiyori had something to do other than pin Orochi down and deliver a speech. The Kazenbo almost robs her of her agency. If she had for example, rescued Orochi from it and then knocked out the dude only to say something like no, "the people of Wano get to decide this tyrants's fate" it would have been so much more satisfying. I do understand why people may like the karma aspect of Orochi dooming himself. Just not for me. But boy, I am shocked, amazed, excited and confused by this reveal. It is interesting that only Luffy (his rubber like property), Kaido (the flame clouds) and Chopper (human intelligence and speech) ; all zoans, seem to keep some of their fruit's abilities without going through the three traditionally known zoan forms of base, hybrid and full transformation (and partial transformation in the case of Marco, but he's a mythical so I assume that's special) but it is also interesting that Luffy doesn't seem to have any real zoan forms or maybe his gears are similar to Chopper's point system? Now I want to see Luffy eat a rumble ball. That aside, I do wonder how much Shanks really knew when he took the gomu gomu no mi. The chapter did genuinely made me smile watching Luffy bounce around and being happy. Luffy is perhaps the only shounen protagonist to have never gotten a rage based power up. It has always been either from his wish to keep others safe, training or in this case, conquering death and now experiencing joy. He truly deserves to be the Joyboy of this generation. This makes me think we're getting a Kaido flashback in the next 5 chapter. Edit: Just wanted to say that I really appreciate Merphy for giving manga as a medium try. I think it helped destigmatize the legitimacy of manga as literature. Can't wait for tinfoil Merphy to come up with some theories. Looking forward to the next Hunter x Hunter video.
I've only been watching One Piece for a year and reading the manga for a couple months, and I'm completely blown away. One Piece is truly a 1 of 1 kinda story and experience. Thank you Oda for 25 years of greatness and I'm sure many more incredible moments to come.
Kaido's face when he looks up at the hole in the ceiling is up there with Enel realising that his lightning didn't affect Luffy. It's a mix of disbelief, terror and anticipation, and it's absolutely amazing. "...Wait, who's on the roof? Oh no..." That panel could go on merchandise. Also your physical reactions are absolutely heartwarming -- you were shaking! Bless your heart!
I'm going to be so sad when this story ends. Nothing compares to the experience of following this story. One piece has been with me for more than half of my life now, it always gave me something to look forward to every week for so long and now that we are approaching the end game I can't imagine the day when the next week will not have a new chapter of this series, but eagerly waiting for the day I see "The end" at the end of the last episode of the anime.
I've been following this series for almost 14 years, i started watching it on my tv when i was 6 y.o, for me One Piece isnt just a manga or an anime, it's part of my life, it gives me hope and joy, and i know it'll be end soon, it makes me sad, like i dont want it to end but it has to :(

How wild is it that you caught up to OP at the most hype reveal ever? For me, as a long time fan, this is the best moment of One Piece. To finally know Luffy's true power, I feel like we're finally in the end game and a lot of big stuff is going to happen. I agree, in my opinion, that this is perfect. The perfect power for Luffy. Of course the fight is going to be amazing, but I'm most excited to see the reactions of the other Straw Hats. What a time to be alive. Thanks Murphy. Thanks Oda. :)
Manga reactions were intense this week. This chapter made everyone so emotional. I saw some UA-camrs reading the chapter going through the 5 stages of loss, and finally getting up and laughing hysterically.
@@MuscleboundKage yeah, it far surpassed Chapter 1043 in the amount of comments it got in its spoiler thread, while 1043 had itself already far surpassed 997 which was the most commented One Piece chapter ever since spoilers exist.
I love just how excited you were about this chapter. The sheer child-like excitement is just representative of the entire one piece community and really just expresses the excitement for all of us. I just want to add, Luffy always said "I am a rubber man" which just seems fitting for him to have a human human fruit. I think it fits better than people think
i cannot WAIT to hear your thoughts on this. i was literally (and i do mean literally) trying not to scream so my flatmate wont think im being murdered, but oh my god. how does oda STILL pull these crazy reveals off?? the fact that some people saw this coming bc he drew luffy at the party in skypiea is completely nuts, and i think luffy looks so...cute but majestic and special in that form. i adore it to pieces. also - the fact that the fruit lets him only "b limited by his imagination only"....that feels so meta. bc for me the joy of one piece has always been that the world is set up in such a fantastic way, that the only limitation of the stories oda can tell and still make them believable in the one piece world really only is his imagination. i....this is so crazy good.
I love how Oda made Luffy's fruit make Luffy a Looney Tunes character. It embodies everything that Luffy is perfectly. And I love how Luffy's design is reminiscent of Rubber Hose animation. Like he still has the properties of rubber, but for completely different reason than what we thought. If the anime animates Gear 5 like a Looney Tunes cartoon, it would be really cool, and then maybe I'll actually watch it. Merphy. You have perfectly articulated why I love this chapter so much.
I love how this chapter made gear 3rd make sense, now it makes sense that a bone balloon would have the same impact as a regular giant fist, it's because luffy truly believes that what he's doing is giving him a giants fist.

I think that one of the things that sets Oda apart as a story teller is how well he manages to convey joy. Both Luffy and Gold Roger brought me to tears when they smiled in this arc, and it's frankly amazing.
I've been caught up with One Piece since 2010, and have been week to week ever since. If you're reading this Merph, just know that watching people like you take their own OP journeys and gushing about all the amazing moments that are in it just gives me so much joy. Thanks for giving OP a chance and congratulations on catching up with the series. It's an amazing time to be a OP fan.

The best thing is how seemlessly the reveal fits with luffy. The shockwaves of this info will reverberate until the final chapter. I love that this is a natural progression, not a drastic change. Luffy has always fought using his imagination, he was just limited before, only able to pull out aspects of his fruit. Now he has full control. Also I think this is the first arc luffy has intentional gone into the arc as a warrior of liberation, for the people not just a friend or for his own reasons. Remember when luffy freed the prisoners by helping them see they were no better than slaves if they didn't fight? Interesting choice of words, and it's something both BM & Kaido have reiterated in recent chapters. All I'm saying is that it's no accident that the fruit awakened this time. When luffy was taking on the responsibility of rallying the people, to free them physically & mentally from Kaido. Ofc by the climax luffy carries everyone's hopes but before he usually entered the fight for his own reasons. Liberating the victims is a byproduct e.g. he beat Arlong to free nami, not necessarily for the village's sake. In Skypeia he refused to run becos he was determined to ring the bell for Crickett, not so it'd end the sky civil war. He fought Moria to get Brook's shadow so he'd join the crew, not necessarily to help the thriller bark victim association lol. So yeh, this reveal also perfectly lines up with the above IMO. Another step towards being King!
In retrospect, I should have know about the foreshadowing of Luffy’s devil fruit. We have gotten so used to Luffy using Gears that it never occurs to me that it could be a Zoan type.
I remember getting into an argument with someone when they theorized that luffy had a special zoan-paramecia fruit. I was so confident that they were dead wrong.
Now that it’s revealed it makes me wonder.Does that mean luffys gears are like choppers point transformations and has luffy been in his hybrid form his whole life?Cause if so that’s hilarious 🤣
@@zackm681 I don't think that's the case. My theory is that his gears(especially 3 and 4) are minor awakenings of the fruit. It never did make sense to anyone reading the manga why Luffy blowing air into his bones and muscles makes him bigger, stronger and heavier because that's not logical at all. But now that it's revealed that his fruits is basically works on cartoon logic the previous gears makes perfect sense. It reminds me of the old looney toons/Tom and Jerry type hijinks that the character would do.(lol gear 3 is basically the main move of Jerry's cousin in that one episode)
I haven't read One Piece and so I can't comment on the video content itself, but I just wanted to echo other comments and say that it makes me so, so happy to see someone outside of the anime and manga community who started from regular literature be this hyped and excited for a manga chapter; it just really warms my heart. So many manga fans are only that, manga fans, and there's nothing _wrong_ with that by any means, but there's just certain stigmas and ways of consuming manga that are.... limited, for most fans, that make manga seem shallower than it really is, when in reality there are so many manga out there that are masterfully well-written enough to stand toe-to-toe with so many famous novels. Sure, there may be some annoying tropes, the art may suffer at times, the writing may sadly suffer at points for some series because of the rough schedules, but manga is literature, just like regular books, and I've always analyzed it and consumed it as such, and I LOVE seeing you discuss it and treat it like regular literature, because that's how manga deserves to be seen! Idk, it just makes me so happy to see it be normalized like this 🥺❤ and I can't wait to watch your future Hunter x Hunter videos (since I do love that series), and see what other favorite manga of mine you might read and gush about in the future...!! I have so many manga I'd love to hear you talk about 🥺

Loved the fact that Oda can use his own god as a power in the story! We all assumed we’d understand what Luffy’s power was and theorized for weeks! And Oda was like “Nope! Gotcha again!”😂😂 just perfect! Hiyori and Orochi was SO powerful too but I can also see how it’d easily get glossed over by Luffy’s awakening. Glad Orochi’s dying but I need more of Luffy!!!! Man I can just imagine Oda giggling like crazy when he drew this chapter. It's almost poetic that you managed to caught up to one of the biggest reveals in the series. I was left very overwhelmed upon first read, since it was just so much to take in. But as I re-read the chapter and see others thoughts on it, I've come to love it more and more. I can wait for the anime to do this moment justice. It's going to be great.
Nika isn't a god to be revered the way Luffy isn't a Pirate King to rule over the seas. He's there to make you laugh and smile, right along with him. One Piece is going to go down in history as one of the greatest stories ever told.
@@Alexander-2956 Enel is called a god because of his own narcissism, and because the themes of Skypiea are meant to be a distilled microcosm of the entire series. That being said, the fact that Luffy's Devil Fruit is in the same category as things like Sengoku's Daibutsu, Orochi's Yamata no Orochi, and Yamato's Okuchi no Makami strongly implies a link to actual divinity. Never mind the direct parallels it has to various real-world gods such as Sun Wukong, Hanuman, and perhaps most importantly Ah Kin (a Mayan sun god - Skypiea! - which is, phonetically, Nika backwards). Of course, divinity in One Piece isn't something we fully understand. Though I think it will be by the end of the series. So it remains to be seen just what it really means to have a Devil Fruit that bears the name of a god. But all that being said, I think there's more significance to it than simple titles.
Luffy is Joyboy - using a Zoan devil fruit that turns him into the Sun God who spread happiness. Kaidou wanted desperately to be Joyboy. His artificial Zoan devil fruits are called SMILES! Was Kaido trying to recreate Luffy's Nika fruit this entire time?!

Oddly enough, I’ve read the chapter 5 times over, I can’t stop laughing when I think of it. The power is perfectly Luffy, the desire to be the most free, to help others… Before the chapter came out I was afraid to be disappointed, but I had faith that Oda knew exactly what he was doing…. It was written more perfectly than Spider-Man: No Way Home. The number of ways it could bave gone wrong were infinite, but it feels PERFECT. Even so that Luffy’s ability to bring smiles reached me through the page. Nika bringing the smiles!

I think this kind of explains red hawk how luffy can generate fire, the fruit is so powerful you can literally do anything to what your imagination can think of and literally thinking of ace allowed him to do that UNDER WATER. So yeah luffy definitely has the most dangerous power in the world

Your excitement during your opening ramble was contagious, I had a smile on the whole time watching it. It's awesome how you're finally able to join the week to week conversations at probably the biggest time in the series. Also, I loved your point about his power embodying the theme of the story. I hadn't really thought about it like that yet but it makes perfect sense that the man who only wants to be King of the Pirates because it would give him the most freedom and spreads freedom everywhere he sails has the fruit that is essentially the power of freedom.

I feel like Luffy's the fruit can be a double edged sword because one's imagination can be so vast or complex that it can consume them, almost like having unlimited possibilities can prevent people from acting on a single one. However it is perfect for luffy because he is as simple minded, honest and focused as they come so he won't have much trouble mastering the devil fruit's powers and use them to their potential.
I usually enjoy watching your reviews, but this one in particular hit me. As a long time fan of One Piece and manga/comics in general, I have become a bit jaded. This chapter, while I enjoyed the new power-up itself, the Hiyori moment and am very excited to see it in animation, I was focused on a lot of the potential plot holes and this reveals similarities to other manga, that arguably took a turn for the worse with retcons/twist like this. Merphy, you clearly have an extensive love and knowledge for lit and theming, it's really great to see someone with your history be so open and interested yet unfettered and to truly be so hyped that the lilt in your voice is plain to hear. It gave me a fresh perspective. Thanks for this video.

The hiyori analysis is what makes your stuffs unique. The connection between freedom, oden's sacrifice, and the smile never leaving his face in death during the "Joy Boy reveal" was very well noticed and discussed. Also the fan-girling is vindicating because I've been giggling like a geisha this whole week cuz of the chapter. I've been reading weekly since FI and this is for sure some of the most hyped I've ever been from a chapter for all the reasons you mentioned and then some.
seeing SO many pieces of foreshadowing that Oda had done for this fruit come up has been such a great experience. Theories like the 'smiles' being produced as being failed attempts at recreating the Nika fruit, hence causing the person who eats it to either have a flawed, permanent smile, or a deformed half-zoan fruit. My personal favourite is people who brought up that, in the first chapter, there's a panel with Luffy saying 'Look what I can do!' while stretching his mouth out. Turns out, this is a slight mistranslation, and he actually says '嬉しい', meaning the sentence translates to 'look how happy I am now!'
Loved hearing your thoughts on this!!! This chapter really moved me to tears.. it's so amazing how much you can feel Oda through this development. This chapter not only celebrates Luffy's freedom, but Oda's freedom as a writer. Luffy's pinnacle is Oda's raw unadulterated will. This chapter is about the will of the story of One Piece and I think that's why I truly can't stop thinking about it.
They didn't actually see Luffy's silhouette in the sky, did they? I think it was more that the observation Haki users noticed that Luffy's voice/heartbeat had returned, and then they let the others know. Marco telling Nami and Tama, for example.
Thank you Merphy, for putting into words why I liked this chapter so much. I spent a good 2 hours intermittently chuckling after reading it, and I couldn't explain why. The new design, the true nature of Luffy's power, the way he fought those few panels against Kaido, it all just feels so *fitting.* As people theorized about what the true nature of Luffy's fruit was these past two weeks, I was uneasy. Because the Mythical Zoan:[insert god here] theories made sense to me, and I didn't want them to. Just like you said, I was picturing something regal, awe-inspiring, intimidating. Something classically badass. And I didn't want that. It just didn't feel like Luffy, and it felt like Luffy was going to lose part of what made him the Luffy we know and love, if that happened. Instead, he got thematically appropriate freedom-powers that essentially result in him fighting like a Looney Tunes character. And it just works. I looked at that silly look of Luffy's, and felt silly myself for doubting Oda on this. Of course he knew what made Luffy special, he was the one who made Luffy that way just writing and drawing as he liked; of course he wasn't going to damage that in pursuit of the cool factor and instead make it work with the cool factor, he's been doing that very thing for decades at this point.

Seeing luffy just laughing the whole chapter was beautiful. Luffy's ability being limited to his imagination is the PERFECT ability for him. And that gear 5 panel in the last page is a top 10 panel for me in One Piece

It's also very ironic how the the Shandians were liberated from Enel by the person with the Nika fruit i.e. their God. Everyone was even praying to a God, if it existed. Skypeia arc was so beautifully crafted.
Skypeia keeps growing and growing in importance and is hugely linked to a lot of arcs down the line. It's ironic for it to be an arc that was like a detour or a side quest on their journey. And we have yet to explore the moon and Enel's future teased at the end of the arc. Since now we know about King's people, another race that were thought of as Gods, it's getting really intense. All of these races with wings that lived on the sky are sure to be relevant again

It's amazing to me that 22 years later, I have to recontextualize the main character. Not because he's changed, but that we are only just now getting to know an important part of his character. Just like you I love the themes of this chapter. Luffy represents the juxtaposition of both inherited will and free will. Maybe some things are predetermined, and there might be an element of destiny, but the whole fiber of his being (quite literally) is flexibility and freedom.
I'm so glad someone that is typically outside the manga scene, was able to appreciate the incredible works of Oda. Your exposure to other literary works from notable authors offers an insight into your analysis of characters, themes and plot in a way that many manga-only fans can't appreciate.
The fact that you joined this community as we share the excitement through some of the series' biggest moments is a huge facet in being able to appreciate the series for what it is, because it is the discussion and the theories and the "I can't wait till next week" that makes the One Piece manga so enticing!

One of the best parts of this chapter was Orochi Burning to death because a few chapters ago kawamatsu was saying "there's no honor in burning to death"
As I recall, Oda long ago said something along the lines of choosing Luffy's power to be what it was because he thought it was the most 'ridiculous' power for a main character.
He answered an SBS question what if a human ate the Hito Hito no mi? In reference to Chopper's fruit.
Oda replied oh theyd become enlightened.
We all thought oh he's foreshadowing the Buddha fruit of Sengoku.

Crazy to think that Luffy has been liberating people since Coby and Alvida. 20+ years of liberation build-up, it's all so perfect
I just want to mention that although Luffy's comeback and the reveal of his devil fruit got me hyped, Hiyori's moment just hit me way harder.
20 years has this girl being dealing with the loss of her family and some of her loved ones; 20 years having to put an act due to the revenge she wants to succeed at; and some of those years she HAD to be near Orochi, who ironically sort of fell in love with her; and finally after all those years she can stop her act, reveal herself as the proud daughter of Kozuki Oden and just let all her rage and sadness flow as she finally takes revenge on the man who took everything from her.
Luffy really got me hyped, but Hiyori got me tearing
I dunno, I feel ya but the thing is it's way more common for any medium to get me to tears than it is for me to get so hyped...I love me those tearjerk moments but this one felt pale in comparison to how monumental Luffy's development here feels. Haven't felt this rush since chapter 903

I really really love that Oda stuck to the soul of one piece and did what he really loves, and made Luffy's Strongest form a goofy funny form, and not something serious, it almost brings tears to my eyes, Honestly.

I *did* have tears in my eyes at the end of the chapter. I couldn't believe that somebody could create a powerup that was so cool and so absurdly thematically appropriate. We call him Goda for damn good reason.
The thing I loved the most about this chapter is that I as a reader was also infected by Luffy/Joyboy’s happiness. I found myself laughing and smile the whole way through, just as Oda/Joyboy intended

Ever since Haki was introduced, I feel as though we have been ignoring Devil Fruits. It's about time we go back to questioning how they came into existence, what is Vegapunk up to etc
Uuuuh, Devil Fruit powers where still a huge part of every single fight. It was always a combination of DF powers and haki when Luffy used his Gears. Same with Katakuri or Cracker etc.
Perhaps the WG got vegapunk to replicate luffy's fruit since they can't get their hands on the original.
@@OrokanaMkIII I had a theory that DF come from Nika. That's why the failed smile fruits make the afflicted laugh uncontrollably. And the 800 year gap that the WG is keeping a secret is a time period where DF never existed, but Nika created the DF by manifesting it into existence after the countries tied to the WG teamed up to take them down (them being the D clan, who I think is where Nika originates from).
Oh wow! Merphy was so hype about this chapter that she’s literally shaking in her voice and body with tears in her eyes. I LOVE IT! I’m so happy that you expected it but also didn’t expect to hit you this much. What an incredible time to be a One Piece fan!
After that chapter I immediately was taken back to the time when I thought how in the hell it is possible that Luffy can suddenly produce fire out of nowhere (Red Hawk). Then I always asked myself how in the world can Luffy change the trajectory of his fists when using Culverin against Doflamingo. And after that I had the same feeling when Luffy used Kong Organ Gun where he just let multiple fists appear out of nowhere. The hints have always been there that his fruit is something else! Oda is a mad freaking GENIUS!
And how is it that the smoke is consistently formed like a veil around Luffy while on G4? Rubber just doesn't do all that.
This transformation is also a solution to a lot of questions on top of everything, it's fkng amazing.
Being a Zoan also explains a lot about Luffy's recovery time and how he certain wounds are just are not as deadly to him. It also explains how he could actually inflate his bones and have the air transfer between them.
Yeah, and when Kaido imitated the change of trajectory of his culverin that's where I thought that Luffy may be a Zoan as he could change and manipulate his body the way that some Zoans can.
Lucci mentioned in their fight that Luffy inflating his bones shouldn't increase his striking power, then got knocked the fuck out.
Oda planned this out for a while.
Water Luffy suddenly makes more sense now
Oda has already said that his favorite characters are the ones that allow for a comedic approach, and it makes me think a lot about how Big Mom and Luffy have so much in common, especially now with these revelations of the Straw Hat's power. It's as if Big Mom and Luffy came straight out of Disney studios, with their crazy creative skills, not to mention all the other similarities, like their unshakable determination (the young Linlin in Kaido's flashback says the exact same words as Luffy), the similar dreams of uniting peoples, the value for food and for those who feed them and, of course, the main thing in this chapter: the playful approach. I've always thought about it a lot, but now I'm sure: we've been following Big Mom for so long because Oda knows he has a space in her to do what he likes to do most, fun. It's not "meme", it's fun. And that's One Piece, the tale of a Fun Boy (JoyBoy).
The Yonko all as "potential" kings of pirates; Big Mom, Kaido doesn´t reach, Newgata doesn´t want and neither Shanks( it seems). Big Mom and Kaido have dual contrast with White Beard and Gol D Roger. Big Mom wants a family of all races, White Beard has a big family; Kaido wants to be a hero and be a King of Pirates, Gol D Roger was a hero and King of Pirates. Have another parallel between Yonkos too. Kaido and Big Mom were the heroes, but something go wrong; White Beard and Gol D. Roger fulfilled their dreams.

There has been this minor consenses floating around that Luffy‘s Gomu Gomu is one of the weaker fruits, but it’s so strong in his hands because he is so creative with it.
Oda just flipped that 180 on it‘s head with this chapter and was like Luffy‘s fruit is the most broken because you can do anything as long as you‘re creative with it.
I love that.
It’s interesting because in a way it doesn’t really change anything: what makes Luffy strong is his creativity.
But at the same time it changes everything because now Luffy has directly inherited the will of previous liberators in One Piece’s world, and that’s pretty interesting.
That's only when it's awakened. It was clearly stated. And preawakening, we clearly saw all the limitations of the fruit. You shouldn't just decide to forget every single thing in the story up till this point
This is such an amazing time to be a One Piece fan.

This is one of my favorite One Piece-related videos I have every watched. Raw emotion and passion but you're still able to articulate so well about themes and bring a completely different perspective than all the other chapter reaction videos. You are absolutely needed in the One Piece community more than a couple times a month
One Piece was trending at no. 1 on Twitter worldwide the day it came out! It's the first manga in history to have accomplished this! Btw, One Piece also reached 500 million copies in circulation, becoming the best selling series in history by one author, beating JK Rowling!
That's incredible! Here I thought only Demon Slayer and Attack on Titan could do that. One Piece is also number two all time behind only Superman in terms of comics and manga sales. It's done this in 25 years and Superman has been around for almost 100 years.

This chapter broke us all, so I love hearing you gush about it as much as the rest of us did 💗 I've been reading OP week to week almost 15 years now, and this is one of the few times a chapter has created such level of hype. There's a lot of exciting chapters in the story for sure, but this was HUGE. I'm still in awe of what Oda did.
I'm waiting to see what happens during the fight, but so far it seems like Luffy's powers are something like... toon powers? Which is... it's just perfect? Like holy shit, I never thought it could be something SO perfect. For Luffy, because he's always had ridiculous abilities and his imagination to make use of what he had was always his strength... but also, if it's a power that makes people laugh, it just makes so much sense that it's something like toon powers, simultaneously funny AND powerful. I'm still amazed because NEVER in a million years I would've thought of that (not even with the common comparison of OP's style to cartoons!), and yet it makes so much sense now. Since I've been reading this manga weekly, it's so common for us fans to make theories that end up being wrong or are right in unexpected ways, and yet Oda keeps surprising me with things that are even better than what we could've imagined. This was an amazing chapter and I can't wait for the next one.
Also... I'm still laughing at how Oda made you change your schedule, but can't blame you. You caught up in the most hype time we've had in a while, and that's saying a lot considering this arc has been incredible from start to finish.
I was about to go to bed but welp, Merphy dropped a new OP video. You actually joined the weekly crew at the perfect time! This chapter was straight 11/10 to me. I love how Gear 5th is so goofy. Truly the most Oda way to depict the most powerful form as the silliest. Luffy straight up pulled a Popeye there. I do think that zoans having their own will makes sense as all the objects that have "eaten" a devil fruit are zoan type. While I wasn't the biggest fan of Hiyori just standing there... menacingly, I can see why some people may like it. After giving such a powerful speech, I really wish she had slayed or at least defeated Orochi and then maybe spared him to end the cycle of hatred herself instead of it being resolved by some weird semi conscious remnant of the Kazenbo. And I get that a lot of people think its deep because Orochi essential doomed himself by wording his final command to Kanjuro by saying "lay OUR souls to rest" or maybe it was an accident (hard to tell) but I disagree. It would have been a lot more meaningful if Hiyori had something to do other than pin Orochi down and deliver a speech. The Kazenbo almost robs her of her agency. If she had for example, rescued Orochi from it and then knocked out the dude only to say something like no, "the people of Wano get to decide this tyrants's fate" it would have been so much more satisfying. I do understand why people may like the karma aspect of Orochi dooming himself. Just not for me.
But boy, I am shocked, amazed, excited and confused by this reveal. It is interesting that only Luffy (his rubber like property), Kaido (the flame clouds) and Chopper (human intelligence and speech) ; all zoans, seem to keep some of their fruit's abilities without going through the three traditionally known zoan forms of base, hybrid and full transformation (and partial transformation in the case of Marco, but he's a mythical so I assume that's special) but it is also interesting that Luffy doesn't seem to have any real zoan forms or maybe his gears are similar to Chopper's point system? Now I want to see Luffy eat a rumble ball. That aside, I do wonder how much Shanks really knew when he took the gomu gomu no mi. The chapter did genuinely made me smile watching Luffy bounce around and being happy. Luffy is perhaps the only shounen protagonist to have never gotten a rage based power up. It has always been either from his wish to keep others safe, training or in this case, conquering death and now experiencing joy. He truly deserves to be the Joyboy of this generation. This makes me think we're getting a Kaido flashback in the next 5 chapter.
Edit: Just wanted to say that I really appreciate Merphy for giving manga as a medium try. I think it helped destigmatize the legitimacy of manga as literature. Can't wait for tinfoil Merphy to come up with some theories. Looking forward to the next Hunter x Hunter video.

I've only been watching One Piece for a year and reading the manga for a couple months, and I'm completely blown away. One Piece is truly a 1 of 1 kinda story and experience.
Thank you Oda for 25 years of greatness and I'm sure many more incredible moments to come.
Kaido's face when he looks up at the hole in the ceiling is up there with Enel realising that his lightning didn't affect Luffy.

I'm going to be so sad when this story ends. Nothing compares to the experience of following this story. One piece has been with me for more than half of my life now, it always gave me something to look forward to every week for so long and now that we are approaching the end game I can't imagine the day when the next week will not have a new chapter of this series, but eagerly waiting for the day I see "The end" at the end of the last episode of the anime.
I've been following this series for almost 14 years, i started watching it on my tv when i was 6 y.o, for me One Piece isnt just a manga or an anime, it's part of my life, it gives me hope and joy, and i know it'll be end soon, it makes me sad, like i dont want it to end but it has to :(

How wild is it that you caught up to OP at the most hype reveal ever? For me, as a long time fan, this is the best moment of One Piece. To finally know Luffy's true power, I feel like we're finally in the end game and a lot of big stuff is going to happen. I agree, in my opinion, that this is perfect. The perfect power for Luffy. I love just how excited you were about this chapter. The sheer child-like excitement is just representative of the entire one piece community and really just expresses the excitement for all of us.
I just want to add, Luffy always said "I am a rubber man" which just seems fitting for him to have a human human fruit. I think it fits better than people think
i cannot WAIT to hear your thoughts on this. i was literally (and i do mean literally) trying not to scream so my flatmate wont think im being murdered, but oh my god. how does oda STILL pull these crazy reveals off?? the fact that some people saw this coming bc he drew luffy at the party in skypiea is completely nuts, and i think luffy looks so...cute but majestic and special in that form. i adore it to pieces. also - the fact that the fruit lets him only "b limited by his imagination only"....that feels so meta. bc for me the joy of one piece has always been that the world is set up in such a fantastic way, that the only limitation of the stories oda can tell and still make them believable in the one piece world really only is his imagination. i....this is so crazy good.
I love how Oda made Luffy's fruit make Luffy a Looney Tunes character. It embodies everything that Luffy is perfectly. And I love how Luffy's design is reminiscent of Rubber Hose animation. Like he still has the properties of rubber, but for completely different reason than what we thought. If the anime animates Gear 5 like a Looney Tunes cartoon, it would be really cool, and then maybe I'll actually watch it.

I love how this chapter made gear 3rd make sense, now it makes sense that a bone balloon would have the same impact as a regular giant fist, it's because luffy truly believes that what he's doing is giving him a giants fist.

I think that one of the things that sets Oda apart as a story teller is how well he manages to convey joy. Both Luffy and Gold Roger brought me to tears when they smiled in this arc, and it's frankly amazing.
I've been caught up with One Piece since 2010, and have been week to week ever since. If you're reading this Merph, just know that watching people like you take their own OP journeys and gushing about all the amazing moments that are in it just gives me so much joy. This is the most hype chapter since years ago and nobody can resist a month to discuss that chapter.
Yeah, especially since a bunch of people got to experience Gear 5th live for the very first time, which they couldn't do for Gears 2nd, 3rd and 4th.
The best thing is how seemlessly the reveal fits with luffy. The shockwaves of this info will reverberate until the final chapter.
I love that this is a natural progression, not a drastic change. Luffy has always fought using his imagination, he was just limited before, only able to pull out aspects of his fruit. Now he has full control. Also I think this is the first arc luffy has intentional gone into the arc as a warrior of liberation, for the people not just a friend or for his own reasons.
Remember when luffy freed the prisoners by helping them see they were no better than slaves if they didn't fight? Interesting choice of words, and it's something both BM & Kaido have reiterated in recent chapters. All I'm saying is that it's no accident that the fruit awakened this time. When luffy was taking on the responsibility of rallying the people, to free them physically & mentally from Kaido.
Ofc by the climax luffy carries everyone's hopes but before he usually entered the fight for his own reasons. Liberating the victims is a byproduct e.g. he beat Arlong to free nami, not necessarily for the village's sake. In Skypeia he refused to run becos he was determined to ring the bell for Crickett, not so it'd end the sky civil war. He fought Moria to get Brook's shadow so he'd join the crew, not necessarily to help the thriller bark victim association lol.
So yeh, this reveal also perfectly lines up with the above IMO. Another step towards being King!
Let go a little further, in Fishman Island he wasn't trying to be the hero of Fishman Island he was doing jimbei a favor.
In retrospect, I should have know about the foreshadowing of Luffy’s devil fruit. We have gotten so used to Luffy using Gears that it never occurs to me that it could be a Zoan type.
I remember getting into an argument with someone when they theorized that luffy had a special zoan-paramecia fruit. I was so confident that they were dead wrong.
Now that it’s revealed it makes me wonder.Does that mean luffys gears are like choppers point transformations and has luffy been in his hybrid form his whole life?Cause if so that’s hilarious 🤣

@@zackm681 I don't think that's the case. My theory is that his gears(especially 3 and 4) are minor awakenings of the fruit. It never did make sense to anyone reading the manga why Luffy blowing air into his bones and muscles makes him bigger, stronger and heavier because that's not logical at all. But now that it's revealed that his fruits is basically works on cartoon logic the previous gears makes perfect sense. It reminds me of the old looney toons/Tom and Jerry type hijinks that the character would do.(lol gear 3 is basically the main move of Jerry's cousin in that one episode)
I haven't read One Piece and so I can't comment on the video content itself, but I just wanted to echo other comments and say that it makes me so, so happy to see someone outside of the anime and manga community who started from regular literature be this hyped and excited for a manga chapter; it just really warms my heart. So many manga fans are only that, manga fans, and there's nothing _wrong_ with that by any means, but there's just certain stigmas and ways of consuming manga that are.... limited, for most fans, that make manga seem shallower than it really is, when in reality there are so many manga out there that are masterfully well-written enough to stand toe-to-toe with so many famous novels. Sure, there may be some annoying tropes, the art may suffer at times, the writing may sadly suffer at points for some series because of the rough schedules, but manga is literature, just like regular books, and I've always analyzed it and consumed it as such, and I LOVE seeing you discuss it and treat it like regular literature, because that's how manga deserves to be seen! Idk, it just makes me so happy to see it be normalized like this 🥺❤ and I can't wait to watch your future Hunter x Hunter videos (since I do love that series), and see what other favorite manga of mine you might read and gush about in the future...!! I have so many manga I'd love to hear you talk about 🥺

It's almost poetic that you managed to caught up to one of the biggest reveals in the series. I was left very overwhelmed upon first read, since it was just so much to take in. But as I re-read the chapter and see others thoughts on it, I've come to love it more and more.

Nika isn't a god to be revered the way Luffy isn't a Pirate King to rule over the seas. He's there to make you laugh and smile, right along with him.

Gods are overrated title. Enel is called a god. Ryuma is the god of sword and for all we know, he's a normal dude.
@@Alexander-2956 Enel is called a god because of his own narcissism, and because the themes of Skypiea are meant to be a distilled microcosm of the entire series. That being said, the fact that Luffy's Devil Fruit is in the same category as things like Sengoku's Daibutsu, Orochi's Yamata no Orochi, and Yamato's Okuchi no Makami strongly implies a link to actual divinity. Never mind the direct parallels it has to various real-world gods such as Sun Wukong, Hanuman, and perhaps most importantly Ah Kin (a Mayan sun god - Skypiea! - which is, phonetically, Nika backwards).
Of course, divinity in One Piece isn't something we fully understand. Though I think it will be by the end of the series. So it remains to be seen just what it really means to have a Devil Fruit that bears the name of a god. But all that being said, I think there's more significance to it than simple titles.

Oddly enough, I’ve read the chapter 5 times over, I can’t stop laughing when I think of it. The power is perfectly Luffy, the desire to be the most free, to help others… Before the chapter came out I was afraid to be disappointed, but I had faith that Oda knew exactly what he was doing…. It was written more perfectly than Spider-Man: No Way Home. The number of ways it could bave gone wrong were infinite, but it feels PERFECT. Even so that Luffy’s ability to bring smiles reached me through the page. Nika bringing the smiles!

Your excitement during your opening ramble was contagious, I had a smile on the whole time watching it. It's awesome how you're finally able to join the week to week conversations at probably the biggest time in the series.
Also, I loved your point about his power embodying the theme of the story. I hadn't really thought about it like that yet but it makes perfect sense that the man who only wants to be King of the Pirates because it would give him the most freedom and spreads freedom everywhere he sails has the fruit that is essentially the power of freedom.
Maybe that's the real magic of Nika. It's ability to spread smiles transcends the fourth wall and makes even the audience grin from ear to ear.

As someone he consumes One Piece for more than 20 years I really envy you for reading through all of it in such a short time and actually remembering pretty much all of it to connect all the dots and so on... When it's finished some day in the hopefully far future I will start anew and do it just like that :)

I feel like Luffy's the fruit can be a double edged sword because one's imagination can be so vast or complex that it can consume them, almost like having unlimited possibilities can prevent people from acting on a single one. However it is perfect for luffy because he is as simple minded, honest and focused as they come so he won't have much trouble mastering the devil fruit's powers and use them to their potential.
I usually enjoy watching your reviews, but this one in particular hit me. As a long time fan of One Piece and manga/comics in general, I have become a bit jaded. This chapter, while I enjoyed the new power-up itself, the Hiyori moment and am very excited to see it in animation, I was focused on a lot of the potential plot holes and this reveals similarities to other manga, that arguably took a turn for the worse with retcons/twist like this. Merphy, you clearly have an extensive love and knowledge for lit and theming, it's really great to see someone with your history be so open and interested yet unfettered and to truly be so hyped that the lilt in your voice is plain to hear. It gave me a fresh perspective. Thanks for this video.

The hiyori analysis is what makes your stuffs unique. The connection between freedom, oden's sacrifice, and the smile never leaving his face in death during the "Joy Boy reveal" was very well noticed and discussed.
Also the fan-girling is vindicating because I've been giggling like a geisha this whole week cuz of the chapter. I've been reading weekly since FI and this is for sure some of the most hyped I've ever been from a chapter for all the reasons you mentioned and then some.
seeing SO many pieces of foreshadowing that Oda had done for this fruit come up has been such a great experience. Theories like the 'smiles' being produced as being failed attempts at recreating the Nika fruit, hence causing the person who eats it to either have a flawed, permanent smile, or a deformed half-zoan fruit. My personal favourite is people who brought up that, in the first chapter, there's a panel with Luffy saying 'Look what I can do!' while stretching his mouth out. Turns out, this is a slight mistranslation, and he actually says '嬉しい', meaning the sentence translates to 'look how happy I am now!'

Loved hearing your thoughts on this!!! This chapter really moved me to tears.. it's so amazing how much you can feel Oda through this development. This chapter not only celebrates Luffy's freedom, but Oda's freedom as a writer. Luffy's pinnacle is Oda's raw unadulterated will. This chapter is about the will of the story of One Piece and I think that's why I truly can't stop thinking about it.

They didn't actually see Luffy's silhouette in the sky, did they? I think it was more that the observation Haki users noticed that Luffy's voice/heartbeat had returned, and then they let the others know. Marco telling Nami and Tama, for example.

Thank you Merphy, for putting into words why I liked this chapter so much. I spent a good 2 hours intermittently chuckling after reading it, and I couldn't explain why. The new design, the true nature of Luffy's power, the way he fought those few panels against Kaido, it all just feels so *fitting.*
As people theorized about what the true nature of Luffy's fruit was these past two weeks, I was uneasy. Because the Mythical Zoan:[insert god here] theories made sense to me, and I didn't want them to. Just like you said, I was picturing something regal, awe-inspiring, intimidating. Something classically badass. And I didn't want that. It just didn't feel like Luffy, and it felt like Luffy was going to lose part of what made him the Luffy we know and love, if that happened.
Instead, he got thematically appropriate freedom-powers that essentially result in him fighting like a Looney Tunes character. And it just works. I looked at that silly look of Luffy's, and felt silly myself for doubting Oda on this. Of course he knew what made Luffy special, he was the one who made Luffy that way just writing and drawing as he liked; of course he wasn't going to damage that in pursuit of the cool factor and instead make it work with the cool factor, he's been doing that very thing for decades at this point.
Here a year later for fun can’t believe it’s been that long since the awakening.
