    I had my mice in a wire cage we bought when we got them from the pet store. We actually ended up discovering there was a wild mouse in the house; he was small enough to get through the bars and got one of my mice pregnant 😬 Definitely recommend bin cages.

      I use this as a birthing cage for my rats (I'm a UK breeder (Rala Rattery)). It's not as sturdy as some other cages, but brilliant for what I use it for and I'd imagine, with some minor modifications (personally I think bar spacing is quite large at the rounded points at the top corners, which could be fixed with a bit of garden wire) it would make a good cage for a male mouse or a few females.

      I would also like to say, buy the largest cage you can afford. There's such thing as having a cage that's too small, but not such a thing as having one too large. Considering they'll be spending the majority of their life in the cage, they deserve the largest you can provide them :)

      My mom hates mice and rats too. But when I was younger I convinced her to let me get a rat. She agreed. I've had a few since then but it's hard when they're not from a good breeder. You usually get rats that don't really like being held so I've had only one good rat from all the ones I've gotten.
      A few days ago my maintenance worker found a small mouse stuck in a glue trap in one of the other apartments so she asked if I wanted to help get it off. I ended up keeping the little one and I'm hoping it's female so I can buy 1 or 2 more and get a bigger enclosure. My mom isn't thrilled I have it. She wanted me to step on it. 😒 I don't roll that way.
      I'm currently working on getting it used to me and so far it's not too bad. It has nipped me a few times out of fear but it didn't hurt or leave a mark. (Yes I know the risks) The mouse is fully covered in fur, can run and walk around just fine, has small teeth and I've seen it eat solid foods but I suspect it's still on the mix of formula and solids. It literally looks like a tiny version of an adult house mouse.
      I suspect it's around 2 or 3 weeks old but can't say for sure because it looks tiny. I can't see any male or female parts so it might not be mature yet so there's still a chance I have a little girl. I was gonna buy some formula but my mother thought that would be a waste since it does eat solid foods here and there and at most it'll be another week till it's weaned. If they came in smaller containers then I would. I've given it water and different foods like Oats, bread, spaghetti noodle, a piece of watermelon, Oats mixed with baby food, which I was told would help but I can't get it to eat it. I've seen it eat cheese in the tank and had it eat cheese from my hands and heard it eat from a dog treat.
      I wish I knew how old it was exactly though.

    I made my own bin cage for my pair of females. It is two levels, so they have lots of space. The bin on top is (I'm estimating) about 2 to 3 feet long, and about a foot tall. The bottom bin is a little longer than the top bin, but only about half as tall. There is chicken wire on the side and lid so they have circulation, and they have a hammock, a sputnick, a wheel, a running disk, and lots of cardboard to hide in and chew. Would you say this is a good cage?

    I personally really liked crittertrail cages for my mice, and my mice loved them too! I would definitely recommend having one more cage than the amount of mice you have all connected to each other if you do go this route (for my 4 girls I had 5 cages) they liked it a lot more than their 40 gallon tank that they had previously been in, and they were a lot less skittish in the crittertrail cages(They passed away a few months ago but lived very happy lives)

    • @Emiology
      @Emiology  4 роки тому +3

      Unfortunately there’s only one critter trail that is suitable for mice and hamsters and that’s the super habitat. They need unbroken floor space which most critter trails can’t provide, along with not being able to put much bedding inside. I think critter trails can be okay when they’re connected to a large bin cage to give them a space where they can freely run and burrow

    • @Kira-nu5dd
      @Kira-nu5dd 4 роки тому

      Emiology when my mice were in a 40 gallon, I gave them 7 inches of bedding which they didn’t even use. The only thing they did with it, was bring it to their nest. Also, if the minimum for two mice is a 10 gallon (200 sq in), then why can’t 2 mice live in an unbroken 320 sq in? (160 sq in each) I chose to House them in crittertrails instead, because once I connected them to my 40 gallon they never went in there (they only went in there every now and then and once they would step out of the tube they would climb right back up it again.

      I'm not who you were asking but I thought I might answer anyway. I don't suggest buying/adopting just one more female mice, go for two, because if these two do not get along then you will have the issue of trying to pair the newer one up with a friend.
      If your female is not showing signs of stress or depression and it's seemingly happy on her own then you can leave her on her own for now. There are quite a few conditions where it is appropriate to leave the house on its own and this may be one, but it is down to your judgement

    Do mice need hight? Because all of this cages are quite low and from reading I understand they are climbers so I was wandering if they're like rats (I used to grow both rats and hamsters) and hight is more important?

    • @Emiology
      @Emiology  3 роки тому +2

      In retrospect to their size a lot of these are enough height for mice, and the equivalent of how much height rats get compared to their size. For both species floor space is more important as they are both fossorial, unfortunately most rat cages don't prioritise this so we have to work with what we've got! They will utilise climbing space and its good to provide it but floor space is the most important!

      Maddy hannah Are they males or females? If they’re males, they should not be housed together. Males are incredibly territorial and will most likely kill each other. If they are females it’s possible they are just arguing to assert their hierarchy.

It’s still alive and I’ve been keeping it in a bin cuz I couldn’t bring myself to kill it. I didn’t want to let it go cuz I knew it would get killed if it had a hurt eye. What should I do?

    Hello, thanks for you video (cheers from France). I have a female mouse since end of december (I retreived her after the death of her previous owner, she's at least two years old but very energetic).
    As I didn't knew anything about mice, I bought a "small" cage, a Ferplast mini duna. Now, as soon as the containment will end, I want to buy a new bigger home for this lovely fellow (she just began to love cuddle, now she is accustomed to me).
    I can find the Ferplast duna maxi around here, but I think the Ferplast Criceti 100 would be a better choice for her ? Thanks in advance and keep up with your great content !

    Im unsure if anyone will be able to answer, but I currently have a hamsters in a 55 gallon tank, she was originally my brothers but I took her in after he was unable to care for her and she's starting to get older in age. So I was looking at getting Mice after she passes so my investment into this tank isn't wasted [I have no interest in fish] I saw that about 4 mice could be comfortable in about a 20 gallon.
    But my main question is; is 55 gallons to much for four mice? I know some animals dont need lots of space or get startled at lots of space...I have a feeling that 55 gallons is fine, I think I'm mostly just asking this question for reassurance

      As far as im aware this would be a good size for them, just make sure theres clutter and no empty spaces so they feel safe!
      When setting up my hamster cage I keep in mind where she can hide if she gets scared at various parts of the cages, and I feel like that advice would probably work well for mice as well

    I really wish there were better, bigger cages available for mice. I'd absolutely splurge on a cage like that.
    At the moment even the biggest ones commercially available are in my opinion just ridiculously small. And terrariums, even custom made ones, pretty much always look way too poorly ventilated to my taste.
    I wish there was something like Critternation for mice but with smaller bar spacing. Practical doors, a sturdy frame and the option to combine similar cages into a bigger one would be brilliant. Ferplast's Multipla hamster does seem to attempt something like that but to me it looks like it's on the verge on collapse at any moment. And does not look very escape proof, either. Or practical for handling the animals, or cleaning.

    Hi! I was wondering if having rats (3 is how many I could get, males) and 2 very smol (but old) dogs would be fine? I was planing to put off getting rats until we had no animals at our house, but I wanted to see what other people with rats would say. I have plenty of room in my bedroom for a big cage, my dogs rarely go upstairs, and I usually have my doors closed. I want to give my rats the best and most comfy like they could have!

      I have to say no. Personally I wouldn’t keep any mice in anything smaller than 80 x 50cm, but definitely wouldn’t put 6 mice in a cage that size. For 6 mice you’ll want multiple wheels hides and water bottles and there just isn’t space for it unfortunately

    • @Emiology
      @Emiology  4 роки тому

      It would be okay, I know it's one of their better cages when it comes to floor space. I do think theres better alternatives for mice though, you can't add too much bedding into the base for them to dig, but if you were to fill it up to the top it doesn't leave much height for climbing toys etc, unlike hamsters mice really enjoy and need space to climb on things so I think a taller cage would be better.

      If it’s the furet cage the bar spacing will be too big, you’d have to mesh it out to make sure they don’t escape. You’d also have to work on making sure it had plenty of levels to protect them from falling because it’s quite tall for mice.

    This video is old but I'm really on the fence between wire and glass cages. I'd rather have a glass one for better viewing, easier cleaning (I had rats in a wire cage and I haaaated cleaning it), and more room for bedding, but I'm really worried about lack of ventilation. I had a mouse die due to respiratory issues ages ago so I'm extra concerned about it. Any experienced mice folks have tips or thoughts? I'm considering one of the half and half ones, but ughhh...I'm conflicted.

    • @Emiology
      @Emiology  3 роки тому

      I'd say if you're worried about lack of ventilation, go for a bigger tank than is recommended as the minimum, the bigger the tank, the bigger the mesh top, the more bedding you can put in. Theres a lot of factors that can play into respiratory infections, but if you have a good absorbent bedding, compared to other animals like rats that really can't be in tanks unless it was the size of half the room, mice don't produce as much ammonia so i'd only be worried if there was a very obvious smell that can get trapped easier in a tank, in that case they'd just need cleaning more regularily!
