Danny Baker will continue to be one of my favorite guitarists and entertainers. The last time I checked it’s still America and he’s entitled to his opinion, regardless if others agree with him or not. Why are we so thin skinned as a Country? Do we really live in a world where if someone disagrees with us we just simply want them gone? There’s a word for that kind of behavior folks.
I'm still a fan of Danny Baker and have talked to him a few times but as a black person I was very disappointed when he says that rebel flag is part of "white" heritage. It's not being thin skinned but more of a slap to the face to someone who is a fan.

Sure, it’s certainly not one that brings to mind only positive chapters of that heritage, and not one that I have any connection to, myself, but the rebel flag is a complicated thing. When many American Southerners use it to celebrate their area and heritage, but not all of those people who do so are celebrating the area’s history with slavery or racism, that immediately presents some uncomfortable “grey” for those who would rather do the easy thing and view it in “black and white” (in this case, literally). Many of those who still wear or fly the rebel flag do so to celebrate what they perceive as positive, uniquely Southern things that survived, culturally, long past all those negatives ended. It may sound as stupid as a Jewish person wearing a swastika, etc, but for many, including BLACK southerners, the flag simply represents the South at this point (seeing as symbols evolve), and not just the nastiest bits of its history. Imagine the place you call home or that you most feel a kinship with. Sure, the negatives in ITS history likely don’t top the ignorance and evil of slavery. That’s a big one. But imagine that your hometown or area’s most negative connotation was the only thing outsiders correlate with ITS flag. Imagine certain pockets of America that are, objectively speaking, predominately black areas. Imagine that those areas, which very well may have their share of poverty, crime, violence etc. were thought of for ONLY those things and none of the numerous great cultural things in those areas. Likely not even hard to imagine, right? We both know how much that unfortunately happens. Imagine further, though, that the people of that community were told they could not show pride in their town or call its many positives part of black heritage in America? My point is, if you think that the rebel flag is JUST a symbol of hate and that the people who use it still agree with Civil War-era bigotry, that’s simply not the complete picture. Some do! Absolutely. But not all. Hell, to think that’s all it stands for in the first place is to imply that one thinks that slavery was THE main and sole concern that said war was fought over, which is also objectively just not true. There was more to it. You don’t have to believe that or even care, and as a non-Southerner I certainly don’t think much about the rebel flag nor do I find it fun defending a part of the country for not “ALL being racist”. Not a great point to have to make, but true. Just as not ALL black Americans are the stereotypes many unfairly pigeonhole them as, so too is the rebel flag not always code for “I wish slavery was still around” for every person that it’s special to. So, yes, it IS part of white heritage, for good and bad. But heritage, nonetheless, and still used and loved by people who might not be the hateful stereotyoes you think.

I mean does this represent ALL people deemed politically "white" like the Irish, Scottish, English, Polish, Greek, Italian, Russian, German etc. There is a hell of a lot more or a reason to be proud culturally of ethnic identity then just saying your "white". We only use the social political term "Black" because it is more a catchall identity because all cultural and ethnic history was erased during the slave trade and then bred slaves as cattle...so we can't say Yoruba, Fulani, Luo, Mandenka etc. I'm from the South and was born during Jim Crow. My grandfather was murdered by Klan affiliated people in the late 40's. The Rebel Flag "The Stainless Banner" not the Confederate "Stars and Bars" was used more so as an intimidation tool in the late 30's to now. I also understand how people use the flag as a symbol of rebellion not focusing so much on slavery. William Tappan Thompson designed the Rebel Flag with the cross as "The White Man's Flag." "As a people, we are fighting to maintain the heaven ordained supremacy of the white man over the inferior or colored race: a white flag would thus be emblematical of our cause.[3 " So yeah for a some people the Rebel Flag is just a symbol of rebellion and the pride of having an ancestor who fought in the Civil War. For me as a person of color from the South, the rebel flags says a lot about who you are and what you believe in which in a lot of cases but definitely not all but bigotry and prejudice feelings. I do know of some black descendants of black soldiers that fought for the South but that is another story. I still jam Unknown Hinson songs just disappointed and see him in a different light from when he talked last he performed in my town.

As a liberal and voting democrat. I do not agree with firing him. It’s his 1st amendment and Squidbillies creators right to release him. I do not post on social media for fear of something being seen by my employer or corporate overlords. I ain’t saying it’s right, but it’s a harsh reality we all are aware of when posting publicly. All that being said, he was fired for a post that was made by a man who represented the character he voiced in Squidbillies… how did that upset anyone? I was not offended. I think this guy is hilarious regardless if it’s satire or genuine. It’s funny because the shit he says is not taken seriously and is ridiculous, ignorant rants and contradictions … that are funny. Why fire him!? Those Squidbillies executives are probably atheists too … but are ok with him posting Jesus or Bible references. Or objectifying women on a constant basis. It’s all good and well till someone gets their feelings hurt and ruin it for the rest of us. Shameful. The only thing worth watching the last season is 1 episode with Early remembering how he lived in a storage unit with Gaw Gaw PeePap/ voiced by another gem, Jesco White.
