In a broad and wide-ranging interview to explain how the West views the continuing Israel-Hamas war, now in its seventh week, a former long-serving Editor of The Financial Times has said Israel “hasn’t come anywhere near its goal of eradicating Hamas”. Lionel Barber was replying to a specific question about what he believes Israel has achieved during the forty plus days of the war.

People like Barber who have a perfect intellect generally lack empathy and a moral compass. This is due to their long career in influential jobs where they learn how to be successful. At the end, they are devoid of humanity. It shows in this interview.
Perfectly put. He is of a certain class in England. Right family. Right schools. Right network. Right social group. The virus of the colonial England establishment is still resident in him and people like him.
This guy should get the job of IDF spokesman! 😅😅
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Spot on!
On the question why younger generations are supporting Palestinian people, Lionel Barber is saying they may want to read history books on what happened to Jews in Europe, the role of colonial powers etc. That is all very true, but why should Middle East pay the price for European mistreatment of Jews. Let Europe solve the problem. Let Europe give land to Jews to create Israel. Why Europe/America have dumped the Israel problem on to Middle East?
Same logic with Pakistan and bangladesh... how come Europeans decides to break India apart and create separate islamic states? Time to abolish all such British-era partitions
@@alcinnovationstrue
Europe DID give land to the jews to form their own country. The only problem is that the land already belonged to someone else (the arabs). I heard there is the saying "the woman would make a wonderful wife... too bad she's already married". 😅
Hamas wanted an exchange of Palestinian prisoners for the hostages it had taken on October 7, 2023. In addition, it wanted to preserve the sanctity of Al-Aqsa Mosque. Further more, the international community knows that Hamas attack was triggered because of the Israeli Apartheid Policies against the Palestinians.
I agree with you
agree
They burned babies and peace activities
Also... Al Aqsa is also place for temple Mount
I think they also wanted the spotlight to be shone back on the issues
@@anshuraj4277one thing i dont get is they revised their figures down from 1400 to 1200 because some bodies were burnt an they later realised these bodies were Hamas people. But how did these Hamas guys burn themselves?
This guy is an editor of FT and should be better informed than just harping on 7th October attack. While we all accept that it was tragic yet even the UNSec Gen has refered to it as having a certain context. How is Mr Barber not referring to that at all.
Cause it’s smoke & mirrors .
It would not come to this if the international community had helped the Palestinians and held up international law. You knew full well of illegal settlements and no one did anything. Yes it is committing indiscriminate violence..
He is calling the 7 Oct as massacre, but does not consider the genocide activity by Isnotreal country accountable for killing so many civilians including women’s and children’s.
They only seeing one side and that’s the problem, this dude is saying that Hamas hiding behind civilians which I’m not sure even true but why is the IDF killing civilians in West Bank what is the excuse there .
Because theoretically it's not a "genocide". It's mass casualty. Hitler killed 6 million jews out of 16 million total population, that's a genocide. You can Google and see the Palestinian population. So it's mass casualty as per International journalism.
He's also one of the Andhbhakt
Andh bhakti is among Muslims too. I'm not a chaddi btw. Just a lover of truth & reasoning.
Karan Thapar, it is not expected of you to call it a "war". It is indeed a unilateral bombing of civilians - young, old, women and children.
Mr. Barber is an apologist for Netanyahu's brinkmanship.
How can this guy say that Israel is being careful not to cause too much damage to civilians? Unbelievable 😡
Do you think Israel has been more careful than hamas?
Karan Thapar, you needed to push back on the statement he made about young people not knowing their history. 1) Declaration of Israel as a state. 2) Violent Displacement 3) The Massacre 4) The Theft 5) The Right to Return each one of these statements led to the terrible conditions the Palestinians are living in today.
How was this guy an editor for the Financial Times? I think most young people know more about the issue than he does.
@@ronaldhonda2276 you seem to be heavily brainwashed and deprived of valid historical accounts. Take an unbiased look from unbiased sources, you'll know why he is right.
@@Thoughtflux Funny then I too must be brainwashed because I find his comment historically correct. And I have studied History at the University level for years.
@@svenhanson398 whose statement are you reference to? Which statement is right?
Upset with both person in interview...both are talking about hamas but not about serious crime of IDF(terrorist state military) not on why this things are happening....just doing duty and playing safe role...... very upsetting
Karan is a very good interviewer. I've seen him call out his guests many times. But I agree, this Barber guy got off a bit too easily!
No, Mr. Barber of the Financial Times, you cannot reasonably assert that the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas on Israel is the central defining point of what is going on now in this conflict. The two central defining points are 1) the longstanding Israeli occupation and oppression which has brutalized the Palestinians and led to the emergence of groups like Hamas to begin with, and 2) the Israeli retaliation to Oct. 7 which has targeted civilians under the pretext of targeting Hamas militants, and which strongly suggests a pre-existing plan by Israel to ethnically cleanse the territories it occupies one way or another.
Don't forget that Israel already has done deals with several international companies to extract the oil and gas outside the coast of Gaza.
lionel barber is the type of bare faced colonialist today that modern hindustanis can relate too, it was not always the case
How did this change come about? It is tragic.
5:30 I think it's wrong to call Hamas "a terrorist organisation dedicated to the destruction of Israel", rather it is a paramilitary group dedicated to the liberation of Palestine. It is true that Israel was a coalition of paramilitary groups dedicated to the establishment of a Jewish state prior to 1948, but it could also be described as a bunch of terrorist organisations dedicated to the extermination of Palestinians.
Leonel Barber has taken very little of the indiscriminate killing of palestanians in Gaza and did not mention that cease fire in itself shows his prejudices against palestanians and inhuman silence on killing of civilians.
Your use of the word "indiscriminate" not being used for the everyday firing of rockets by hamas shows your prejudice.
Hostages could confirm former head of Hamas, Musa Abu Marzon's claim that Israeli shelling from tanks and attack helicopters indiscriminate firing killed many of the 1200 dead Israelis
And many of them were armed terrorist settlers who are being passed off as civilians.
In earlier wars, Israel used to have the sympathy of large section of global population. But this time with each progressing day, the large section of people world over are in sympathy with the Palestine people suffering in Gaza due to Israel's actions.
Actually people still hate Islamic terrorism the last time i checked.
I don’t think Israel has ever been particularly popular among ordinary people around the world, with the exception of the Americans.
A very key and important question to ask anti-Hamas authorities;
If Palestinian wants to fight the atrocities by Israel; where do they go with their cases or appeals? They have no place to report the crimes committed by Israel? This is how weak communities surrender to Terrorists and Gangs. There is always failure by the civilized world or first world countries.
Maybe because Palestinians elected hamas?
@@Thoughtflux that wasn’t the terrorists wing. It was a political organization but on the extremist side, say far right.
@@reet9230 glad you can see the nuance there. I just see religious extremism. RSS=Hamas=ISIS=Religious extremism
During Karans conversation with the Hamas leader, he was much more critical and rightly so than he was now. That's disappointing. When he asked why young people were so much siding with the Palestinians, this guest replied that she should read Jewish history. What a nonsense. Whoever it is, whatever you have experienced cannot justify criminal behavior. With this reasoning we should not show more sympathy for the African Americans? More than 400 years of slavery.
Hostage are alive under tunnel and innocent are killed outside the tunnels.
Against 1200 Israeli deaths, already more than 13000 Palestinians have lost their lives, nearly half of them are women and children. Yet the world at large is unable to force a ceasefire. Even the Arab league countries appear to drag their feet. Public opinion all over the world including in Israel seems to be the only hope in this dark time.
Ask Hamas to surrender and release the hostages.
@@mirjahmlinen2698Of course Hamas must surrender and release the hostages. Israel too must stop the war immediately and start the process of solving this long-standing conflict. Palestinians must live in their sovereign state.
How about ending the occupation and letting the Palestinians build their own nation in the pre-1967 occupied territories?
Gaza was given a chance, but they ruined it.
Lionel is totally disregarding the pain Palestinians are facing from last 75 years
Israel is the first occupier who consider themselves as the only innocent party in this conflict ridiculous and Ludacris claim
U lose war U lose land
Time to accept reality of Israel
Some young people believe the devil lives in Israel.
I suggest this to everyone that thinks that Yahweh is protecting Israel... Yahweh's Convenant with the Israelites was conditional on OBEDIENCE to his 10 COMMANDMENTS and guidance provided in scripture such as LEVETICUS 19:33.34 on the treatment of their neighbours. . do you think it logical based on religious texts that those that DISOBEY have any protection...SATAN from their actions seem be the GOD? they follow...I see the "Divine Presence" of YAHWEH in the JEWS who have protested publicly both in Israel and worldwide that these "crimes against humanity" are not done in their name...takes a little bit of courage to proclaim OBEDIENCE to Yahweh's Commandments on how their neighbours in the land should be treated.
Well, that sounds quite plausible.
October 7th looks like a cruel joke now after what has happened since.
Ad a neutral observer, watching your Hamas interview and this interview, I can confidently say the former interviewee present himself as reasonable and take responsibility than this interviewee. This person is not even Israeli and western political elite. If I have to sump this interview, his answer, whatever israel does maybe bad, but just look at hamas, don't blame israel, the only thing I can allow is a scapegoat called nethyanagu.
He cannot simply accept the truth that younger generation are willing to see the truth, the younger generation grows up along the people of color and have the ability to sympathize with suffering. East European and soviet union didn't commit holocaust and had concentration camps despite anti semitism, but he wants to talk about eastern Europe, this appealing. Yah, look at the history, Palestinian people did not commit holocaust, they are the reason for anti semitism among white Europeans, what history does he wants us younger generation to look at? This is appalling, he is basically another shade of western white colonialism to justify terror.
Younger people are fools just to be only fooled by television image, the past and history is not with Israel, the history of israel is even uglier since 1948 than what he wants us to believe.
seems to be IDF paid.
If Hamas is defined as a terrorist organization and they killed 1200 civilians what does this make the IDF?
They well know that the palestinians were treated like animals but at the same time are saying that is not enough excuse to resisit and fight for their freedom. Where there is occupation there is resistance.
Stop infatilization and victimization!
Superb interview. Karan has curated an excellent series of people to interview about Israel's horrific assault on Gaza and has done an excellent job of pushing each one of them hard on the issues.
The justification of deaths on 7th October has no context. However, the information that Israeli bombing its own citizens is discussed by IDF and it’s police.
The point to return is that IDF has also reduced number of casualties from 1400 to 1200!
Stop harping on October 7th like a broken record. Impresses nobody.
What's happening is not good for humanity any country or community there should be a peaceful solution for saving life's on both sides
We were led to believe Israel was a great power but Israel turned out to a wounded mouse only.
Bravo, to Thapar. The line of questioning exposes the revealing nature in the Pro-Israel camp. It must be increasingly difficult to defend the indefensible position of the IDFs collective punishment of Palestinian civilians.
I’m glad this FT analyst was interviewed so that we can understand what kind of people occupy the upper echelons of society and what their thinking is.
Thank you, Mr. Thapar. I always look forward to your interviews.
What Uamas conducted was an terrorist act, but what Israel has done in evil war.
Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and former director of Shin bet Amy Ayalon told Tim Sebastian, senior journalist of DW, hosting Conflict Zone that Netanyahu has to go!
I saw that !
What they did
On October 7
I wish someone would lay out
What they did on oct 7
Since I believe the Israelis have yet to carry out a debriefing yet about what happened
Absolutely no questions regarding the fact that Israel has no right to defend itself against people and land they occupy... It's illegal by International Law. And that Israel actually is supposed to protect those they occupy. Your guest was extremely bias. Calling Oct 7th a massacre with 1200 dead, but over 12,000 (half being babies and children) dead, and thousands under rubble and thousands injured is not???
And to insult the younger generation to say we just see snippets of the horrific videos from Gaza and the West Bank and don't know anything more? We're talking about Israel's 75+ year slaughtering, torturing, occupation, the list goes on and on.
Excellent journalism. Matchless.👍👍👍👍👍👍💯🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

For Lionel Barber, history started on the 07/10/2023 and everything was at the height of peace and prosperity before that.
Such a tool
Hamas started a war then.

Excuse me guys, we in Ireland have been calling for a ceasefire for weeks now. While our Teoiseach has not been as brave as the president of South Africa we are still opposed to the murderous Netanyahu State and have been vocal in that opposition.
Quote on the Mondeweiss website:
Is it not curious, one might ask, that the very sympathy shown to Palestinians appears directly proportional to their perceived inability to confront the uniform machinery of settler colonialism? There is a hidden gratification in witnessing this tragic narrative from afar. Israel’s persistent upper hand serves as a powerful catalyst for Western intellectuals’ feel-good sympathy, a kind of pseudo-solidarity that whispers to Palestinians: “We are with you, but only so long as you remain tragic victims sinking graciously into your own abyss.” One might even argue that this sympathy is contingent upon the Palestinians’ maintenance of their tragic status quo.
Western people only support the Palestinian cause when the Palestinians are being massacred, but if they dare to resist with violence, then we must condemn them and dissociate ourselves from them.
There is nothing resistance-based about what Hamas militants did on October 7th. It was barbaric provocation, and anyone with the capacity of critical thought can clearly see that it completely set back moderate Palestinian resistance efforts. Being able to recognize that is an absolutely vital step for any voices of reason in the region to have an honest reconciliation in the future.
@@daviday87 more than 300 soliders have been killed on October 7th and we don't know exactly how many of the 800-900 israeli civilians have been killed by "friendly fire". You should read the article about the events of October 7th on thegrayzone "October 7 testimonies reveal Israel’s military ‘shelling’ Israeli citizens with tanks, missiles".
The state of Israel has been very good at constructing a narrative allowing him to present Hamas as Nazis and justify the destruction of Gaza.
The world is indeed a sad place for people who condone Hamas brutality.

I stand with Palestine!
Hamas needed the world to see what lsrael was doing to palastinians...l believe they tried all other avenues but were shut down by America and the west...well, they got the worlds attention that is for sure.
This guy is a liar the tunnel was outside across the street from the hospital and not in it.
what is the reason most white old men are still hanging with Israel sympathy ? Really it hurt to see their one sided inhuman remarks and judgement why of thinking. Israel behaver with Palestinian from 1948 to until now they do not even talk about it, why? why ?
This is the first real attempt to remove hamas.. as long as hamas was state in gaza ,could only hope to contain them..
Mr Lionel Barber with his interrupted voice seems to be conscious about lsrael's limited military capabilities and to him even today, Hamas is deeply embedded in Ghaza. He is very much right that Hamas' perception depends upon the location you are sitting in and it differs from region to region. He is rational in his observation that the inhumane carpet bombing could breed more and more Palestinian freedom fighters in the future generations. As a matter of fact, Israel's revelation to the world a number of guns and some unknown gadgets as Hamas' booty, and making a profound claime of capturing its command centre beneath the Shifa Hospital is really an attempt to hoodwink the world public opinion. Barber is definitely in favour of two-states solution on the basis of justice urgently, which the situation demands. Notanki Yahoo and Zionist state's image has been soiled and gone down the drain internationally.
That’s not true the young people are able to look at this with a clear non biased view that’s why they are able to see through the lies nothing complicated
Hamas perhaps do not care about the consequences of their actions whatever they will be.
I keep hearing that Hamas wants to get rid of Israel but what has been happening in Gaza makes me think that the Israel government wants to get rid of the Palestinian people their needs to a change in the Israel government
5:30 Hamas has dropped that from their charter and now agree to 1967 borders. I want to give this guy the benefit of doubt but why would you keep repeating this lie. Only one side has the CAPACITY to destroy the other and we all know who it is.
What has been happening in palistine since 1948 everybody knows and turns ablind eye.
A terrorist organization against a terrorist state. Depressing.
This former FT editor is biased against Palestinians.
I think they show the truth face of Israel to the word😞
a pro-Israeli spokesman trying to sound objective ☹️
How can you justify the killing of innocents on Oct 7? An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth?
for what does chosen mean
it means to be selected
it means to be given a chance
it means to be given a key
it means to be given just enough light to see what the key can unlock
if we are chosen then we have been deemed by the most fearful and disparaged ones
as offering safe harbour, as offering care, healing and loving compassion
to be chosen in humanity means to greet those overcome with fear and disparagement
with inconspicuous acts of loving kindness
however to be chosen, we must first entirely empty ourselves
for when we are chosen space must be made for our hearts to swell
The British guy supports the Colonialists, what a surprise.😮

Big fan of yours, Mr. Thapar but now, for GOD'S sake, stop these awful interviews on hamas, Isreal, none cares in India. Do something meaninful, better. This is really so strange and useless.
Israel already lost this war today most isolated country in the world it’s Israel
The topic seems to be for supporters of hamas like upa and the media associated
The FT Editor might be an educated person but he has no historical knowledge of freedom struggle. Hamas is an ideology of resistance. No one can kill a ideology of resistance no matter how powerful the oppressor is. America could not win iVietnam and Afghanistan nor could the white South African apartheid regime defeat ANC.
There were too many interruprions in this interview. At least 6. 32:08
I'm guessing that's why the questioning wasn't effective and the conversation was painful.

Only a person who has no idea how the Palestinian economy works can say that Hamas ill replace Fatah as the head of the PA. The PA is pretty much a third of the Palestinian economy and is fully funded by foreign donations. How many donations do you think will come from the west to a PA headed by Hamas? The Palestinian economy may well collapse.
