Reaction/Analysis/Deep Dive Request: As you are a HUGE fan of Queen AND Freddie Mercury, I'm sure that you're WELL aware of the fact that one of the key elements to their sound is the 3-part vocal harmonies of Freddie, Brian May (Lead guitarist) & Roger Taylor (Drummer) (Bass guitarist John Deacon DID NOT contribute vocals in the studio. When performing live, his microphone was almost ALWAYS set to either "LOW" or "OFF". While filming music videos, he would mime his "vocals"). As you have already expressed your opinions and feelings regarding Freddie, I'm surprised that you have YET to do deep dives into the other 2 voices that make their harmonies SO WELL KNOWN and remembered. Here are 2 Queen songs with Brian and Roger each singing lead vocals, respectively: "'39": ua-cam.com/video/kE8kGMfXaFU/v-deo.html (Brian May on lead vocals) "I'm in Love with My Car": ua-cam.com/video/a8EYUKmmnqc/v-deo.html (Roger Taylor on lead vocals) BONUS! As we've already established, with Freddie being Freddie, he was MORE THAN CAPABLE of recording ALL OF THE VOCALS for a song without help from the other members of the band & THIS song is the PERFECT example of that. Brian & Roger ONLY contributed guitar and drums, respectively. (WARNING: Contains false ending, let video play til the end!) "You Take My Breath Away": ua-cam.com/video/v_wLNqUz7pM/v-deo.html
Of all of Al's work, this would not be the one I would show and react to. Obesity runs in my family, and my wife deals with it herself. Obesity is both a physical as well as neurological dependency disease. The point to shame people into fatal decisions including anorexia and bulimia on one end and death from over eating on the other. This video is for entertainment but also reflection on our culture towards a much more serious health issue.
What is great about MJ is that not only did he give Weird Al permission to parody the song, he allowed him to use the original sets of the video. Very cool!
The band as whole to. Couldn't tell you how many times a Weird Al parody has come on in my playlist and almost until he starts singing I think it is the actual song.
I would love to watch a tea time with Weird Al. He has been such an influencer with a HUGE range that never really gets the recognition he deserves because his songs are parodies.
He is extremely down to earth and he would definitely do it! I saw him on Drew Barrymore show and he took questions from Daniel Radcliffe(Harry Potter) who played him in the bio-pic! He’s a riot😁😁😁😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🥲😂
I saw Weird Al live on his Bad Hair tour when I was a kid. For "Fat", he ran out on stage in the full fat suit and danced around in it. I remember this one choreographed moment where he hopped up and down and when he landed, his whole band bounced up in unison. It was such a little touch, but it stuck in my 12 year-old brain forever.
Al sent me several autographs when I was young. I would mail in my cassette covers, and I always got them returned signed. Al was one of my first heroes. A gents gent is he.
Al's voice is simultaneously distinctive, you'd never mistake him for someone else, and a chameleon, he can sound like so many other artists. While his straight up parody ability is unparalleled, I honestly prefer some of his original or style parody songs. Things like "Skipper Dan," "Frank's 2000" TV," "The Biggest Ball of Twine in Minnesota," and of course "Hardware Store." If at all possible, please, please, please reach out and see if he'd be up for an interview, he is a national treasure and allegedly the nicest guy in the music business. I'm sure a long talk with him from your perspective would be completely unique in his career. So many people focus on the comedy aspect of his work, which is exceptional, but his technique and musical chops deserve some time in the spotlight.
Agreed; one of my favorites is "Albuquerque". It's both stupid yet incredible - which is kind of his true forte. He's the modern day Tom Lehrer, especially on his originals.. but more so in some ways. I've been following the dude since his initial days with tapes sent to "Dr. Demento", and have all his albums on my truck's stereo SD card. I'll strip away and replace other artists, but "Weird Al" is one of the ones that is always there. Especially for long road trips. 😋 But yes, Elizabeth should totally look into interviewing him. I suspect he'd love to.
One of my favorites of his is "One More Minute", it is an original song of his, but he is parodying the style of Crooner music from the 50's and he is incredible!! I also suggest trying to interview him as well.
"Hardware Store"! Yes! Maybe Elizabeth can discern if that song has the longest line sung with one breath in musical history. And I agree with "Biggest Ball of Twine in Minnesota" . . . and "One more Minute". . . but how about "Since You've been Gone". . . an acapalla with all voices from Al (an Alcapella.if you will). . . Then there's "Genius in France", "Trapped At The Drive-Thru", "Bob", "Ebay"would be good for an analysis of his higher range. . . Heck with it. . . just go through his entire catelogue. . . you'll be entirely entertained, . . . as will we who love watching your reactions to Weird Al
Fun facts: MJ supported Al heavily, loved his parody, and his approval was a major factor in other big artists starting to be willing to work with him (Weird Al, while he could parody anybody, only wants to parody those who bless him to do so). MJ was also involved in these parodies, even listed as a co-writer on Eat It. In this video, they are actually using the set from MJ's 'Badder' video from his movie of the same name! That's one of the reasons it is just sooo good. Sadly, with the Leaving Neverland 'documentary' coming out and reigniting all the old MJ controversy, Al has stopped performing any MJ parodies in order to stay out of all of the controversy.
The only reason Al has never done a Prince parody is because, unlike MJ, Prince always said "no". Al asked him many times, about numerous songs, and Prince never gave his assent. Al respected his wishes, even though he was not technically, legally required to do so.
MJ said "just use the subway props if you want." Which Alfred was only too happy to do. MJ was so supportive of Al and enjoyed everything that Alfred was doing with his songs and vids.
“Trapped in the drive thru” is quite a vocal tour de force with range and runs and such. “Hardware store” is prob the most excellent example of his prowess in clear diction and lyrical pacing.
Fun Fact: It took over 3 hours to put the "fat" makeup on Weird Al. Also, let's see a reaction please for "Hardware Store" because Weird Al shows off RIDICULOUS breath control.
Smells Like Teen Spirit is another that shows off his control--singing while gargling water! And also the clearest intentionally mumbled diction you could ever ask for!
Something that I think has always separated Al from lesser parodists is his attention to detail. He parodies EVERYTHING. The instrumentation on the track, the vocal style, the look of the video - everything. And it's always perfect. I would suggest "White and Nerdy" it's rap, but it's perfect parody - maybe not right for the channel, but you'll love it!
Okay, Okay Elizabeth... you had WAY too much fun with this!!! LOL Your glee is infectious in the best way! You had me smiling so hard it hurt. You are SO good at transitioning between analyst and entertained listener... I personally think that's one of the main reasons so many follow you for your wonderful and insightful reactions!
I saw Weird AL in concert when this song came out. He wore that suit. It was the last song. He played in a warehouse, so he did a lot of this song. He did the part of lifting his arm & started to get FAT. Everyone was totally amazed. It was a fantastic concert
When it comes to his enunciation, Weird Al IS the very model of a modern major general! Always enjoyed Fat, and most of his other spoof songs (like Amish Paradise, I Lost on Jeopardy, and many others). I’ve been a Weird Al fan since I first heard My Bologna on the Doctor Demento Show ages ago. Thanks for sharing this with the world.
And proper grammar. Most other people would sing "I'm the only one that gets a tan," but Al knows it's "who gets a tan." This has always bothered me, even in cartoon intros.
Weird Al has SO many good songs that it's impossible to recommend just one! So: For astonishing vocal technique, "Hardware Store". For specific song parody brilliance, "Amish Paradise" and "The Saga Begins". For artist style parody brilliance, "Bob". For comedy and storytelling, "Trapped in the Drive-Thru" and "Albuquerque".
I get a kick out of watching reaction videos to "Bob" and seeing the moment when they realize that the song is a series of palindromes. The guy is an absolute genius.
For all the good parts of this video, i especially like the guys in the background. Some genuinely heavy dudes keeping up with some good cardio and a pretty crisp dance routine. Props to those guys, they did great.
You’ve mentioned how good Al’s vocal range is, both with impressions and octaves, which is what really makes his live performances even more incredible. He goes from Michael Jackson to Coolio to Don McLean to Kurt Cobain, and so on, all with choreography and costume changes. He’s absolutely amazing. It would also be cool to see you break down some of his originals like One More Minute (a doo wop) or Close But No Cigar (stylistically derivative of Cake, but original).
You nailed it Elizabeth! Weird Al brings a level of excellence to his work that puts him at a level all his own. It would be fascinating if you could ever get a tea time with him.
As I understand it, Michael Jackson was involved in helping Weird Al with the choreography. You might find "Living with a Hernia" interesting to react to as well. Weird Al was on a celebrity version of Jeopardy with James Brown and James actually ASKED Weird Al to parody one of his songs. They settled on James Brown's "Living in America" and James showed similar generosity as Michael Jackson had. James loaned Weird Al his Las Vegas stage, the stage band, some of the costumes, and even helped with the choreography and mannerisms. Then you also get the voice mimicking. "Bob" also features Weird Al sounding very similar to Bob Dylan. I would also recommend Weird Al's original Doo-Wop song "One More Minute" for the voice acting that takes place in it. Funny; I've watched this video "Fat" countless times, but this is the first time I noticed, just as Weird Al starts singing, that his 'crew' standing behind him are doing all the classic moronic things people do when news reporters are trying to do a live shot on the street and bystanders are acting out behind them. You're correct; Al invests a LOT in his music videos. In "Amish Paradise" he pays homage to an iconic Buster Keaton shot when Al depicts a barn raising, then at the video's end he walks through a barnyard full of animals done as an in-camera trick shot filmed backwards so he appears to be singing and walking normally but the action behind him seems to run backwards. And the video for "Tacky" is done in one long unedited shot as different cameo comedians lip sync while the camera travels through a multi-story building. Al has had formal voice training. He says he was losing his voice during his 3-month tours in the 1980s and eventually turned to voice teacher Lisa Popeil (half-sister of Ron Popeil of "As Seen on TV" gadgets fame and fortune) for help. There are a few short videos about this of Lisa talking to Al on UA-cam you might find interesting.
@@Pwecko And Mr Popeil's half-sister Lisa Popeil has sung backup on Weird Al's albums since 1983, including on the song about Ron Popeil. Lisa has also served as Weird Al's voice coach, beginning in the 1980s.
Weird Al is a genius. The extent and scope of his body of work is Incredible. There are artists like Post Modern Jukebox and Leo who take a song and put their own spin on it while staying true to the song. Then there's Weird Al who stays true to the song while completely re-imaginng it.
The detail in this video, as you mentioned, is exquisite. In fact, not only did they do basically a shot-for-shot re-enactment, they used the exact same set. The sound effects always kill me, especially that part where he kind of "discovers" all the sounds, ending with that "poink" of the thumb.
That shows dedication on the part of those guys, and they have a huge musical range. But it also has to say something about what he must be like to work and do business with.
Jon "Bermuda" Schwartz joined him in 1980. Steve Jay and Jim "Kimo" West joined him in 1982. Ruben Valtierra joined him in 1991. So Valtierra is the new guy and has only been with him 32 years.
When weird Al asked for Michael Jackson's permission to parody Bad, Michael not only said yes, but let him use the same set from the video. The crew was about to break it down to get it ready for Al's video when Al freaked out and told them not to touch it.. So this set is actually the same from the original video.
He didn't "freak out." He just wanted to make sure they didn't change the set. He wanted it to look the same, and they were already preparing to mess with it so he had to work fast to get them to stop. I guess that can be misconstrued as a "freak out" though.
Please - you gotta do Albuquerque from the Running with Scissors album. It's a long one, has a TON of weird vocal sounds, and the his band is just SO good. I don't think there's an official studio version music video, and you'll definitely miss a _little bit_ of the fun sounds on the live versions, but there's so much to talk about with that song.
I didn't think it was possible, but my appreciation for Al's skills just went up. This is why I love listening to people who really know what they're talking about.
He was brilliant in this. Some of his videos are such perfect spoofs of the originals, it almost boggles the mind. "Smells Like Nirvana" is another that's on a whole different level.
Great to see Weird Al getting some well-deserved recognition for his vocal chops from an accomplished professional! Even greater is watching Elizabeth utterly unable to contain her glee at each and every detail of this masterfully executed parody. 🥰
You really should find some of his originals or his style parodies @@TheCharismaticVoice I would recommend are One more minute, Dare to be stupid, UHF, You dont love me anymore, Albuquerque or Don’t Download This Song The 3 first might be the most interesting, but they are all good songs to show of his talent as an artist
One of my favorite songs and videos as a kid and still to this day. Al's attention to detail and creativity are everything that separate him from any other artist. A national treasure.
23:35 Great Location ... perfect location: Michael was such a big fan of Al's that when Al asked about doing a Bad Parody, Michael asked him if he wanted the original set as it was still available. This song was my first introduction to Weird Al many decades ago - it was great to see you break it down. Also love your energy during this 😁
A Weird Al Yankivic Tea Time interview would be very interesting and entertaining. Other Weird Al songs to do - Smells Like Nirvana, Like a Surgeon and Amish Paradise.
Also one of the best live performances you will ever experience. Killer band, and a ridiculous effort of costume changes from Al. Oh, and to make sure you're not bored during the few minutes while he changes and the stage is prepared, video clips are shown of either Weird Al skits or songs. Literally never a dull moment at his concerts.
I don't know if you have ever seen Amish Paradise by Al. But at the end of the video, they film him doing his entire part backwards in a busy farm yard, so they can reverse the playback in the video. It is unbelievable how well he pulls it off.
i remember when it premiered, artists that let him cover them have a sense of humor, you made me laugh alot i have missed this video and was happy to see it again.
Weird Al is a GOAT. He created such masterpieces, and sadly much of his humor would be considered "problematic" these days if anyone even came close to doing what he did. This song would not have even made it on the radio if it was written today.
There is no music video (at least that I know of) but his original "Hardware Store" is remarkable. His rhythm is perfect and you can hear and understand every word. I'll not say why this is so remarkable in that song though, I'll let that be a surprise. Even if no video is done analyzing that song, it is worth listening to. And then a few more times. This man is a gift to mankind.
Will agree with this. Hardware Store is one of those songs that goes unnoticed, even though it demonstrates a lot of Weird Al's technical skills. Very, very much worth listening to.
For your next Weird Al song, might I suggest one of his original songs, "One More Minute." It happens to be one of my favorites (parodies includes), but I think you might like it because it highlights a lot of vocal techniques Weird Al doesn't normally use. It really showcases his range, and was actually influences by his real life events (breakup with this then GF). I know you'll love it.
He was the man for his time and place. MTV had really hit its stride. Pop music had such a broad range of styles. Here comes a talented, lyrical genius with a flare for the comedic and vocal ability for great impersonation. He may just be the most unifying figure GenX ever had. Love the enthusiasm in your reactions to the one and only Weird AL.
I was at the CA State Fair and Weird Al was playing the main stage. I was on a public walkway behind the stage when WA came walking out of his green room toward the stage. He was waiting for the intros to finish and I yelled over that we loved WA and to have a great show. He turned and smiled and gave us happy thumbs up. Was great!
I think a comparison between Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit and Weird Al's Smells like Nirvana would be great for you to cover, if you're so inclined. It's such a different style, and it's pretty fun to hear Weird Al with intentionally bad diction.
That song would have never been made if it wasn't for Michael Jackson turning down Al's request to parody Black Or White. Which is fitting you brought it up in the comments of a video where the song is a parody of one of MJ's songs! When he was turned down on that one, he went looking for something else to parody, and that's when he got the idea to do Smells Like Nirvana.
I'm sure you get far more suggestions than you could ever hope to cover, but Weird Al's "White and Nerdy" is amazing - more rap than singing, but hilarious. And it has Donnie Osmond going over the top with some crazy dance moves. You should definitely check it out.
Weird Al is a literal Genius and a perfectionist. His timing in his songs and videos are almost an exact match, it is simply amazing. In the Amish paradise song he learned a part backwards at speed, does it, reverses the film so he is going forward and the rest behind him is in reverse, amazing.
For a song that's only 3:36 and turning into 35 minutes is a feat in itself. I didn't know there was that much to talk about! Glad you have a silly sense of humor. However I wish you would take a break from reacting every once in awhile so you can listen in its entirety and enjoy it normally before you actually break it down! Please react to more Weird Al, thank you!
Love seeing reaction videos because seeing their joy is almost like watching it again for the first time. Elizabeth's reactions nailed that experience for me. Thank you!
So happy I discovered this channel. It’s such a pleasure hearing Elizabeth dissect and praise the songs I grew up listening to. The joy she shares is infectious.
One thing I really like about this space is that none of the recommendations she receives are someone trying to brag about their taste in music, it is *always* motivated by “She’ll love this!”
Someone did a side-by-side with this video and the original, and scene for scene, Weird Al matched the original. His attention to detail is amazing. That's why I love this video so much.
Recently, multiple people close to Michael Jackson have said that his actual voice was a rich, smooth baritone, and that he used the soft falsetto only in public. It's interesting how he developed and utilized a special voice for not only his singing, but for all his speech for over 30 adult years such that we all thought it was his natural voice despite not sounding a thing like his siblings.
I had the opportunity to meet Weird Al, many years ago. He hosted an open mic night in Lancaster PA. After the show, he was cleaning up his gear; when I bumped into him. He seemed like a humble , down to earth person.
As a wise man once said, "He who is tired of Weird Al is tired of life.". You're going to get a wide range of requests on which Al song to do next, and while the correct answer is obviously, "all of them", this is sadly impossible. So I'm going to go with "Smells Like Nirvana" because (1) you've already covered the original, and (2) part of the song itself is about "sing(ing) distinctly... We don't wanna!"). "Trapped in the Drive-Thru", because it might be the single most perfect parody ever, both thematically and for the incredible vocal imitation - every vocal inflection matches the original in pitch and timing, while conveying the exact opposite in meaning and tone. And finally, "Don't Download This Song", an original song that both showcases his voice, and speaks directly to the DRM issues you've no doubt encountered in producing this channel.
There was an interview about Weird Al using Smells Like Teen Spirit. When the Nirvana was asked permission, their initial response was "it's not about food is it?"
I've seen this live, fat suit and all. It's still one of the most bombastic live acts I've ever seen, with a costume change nearly every song. He's no less of the showman or singer live!
Stumbled across your channel last night with your analyses of Johnny Cash’s “Hurt” & Disturbed’s “Sound of Silence” & am now a fan / subscriber. It may seem silly, but the expressiveness of your face illustrates the sheer joy you find in the music, from near tears from Cash, angelic awe of Disturbed, to the constant giggles from Weird Al! Furthermore, you can verbalize & analyze the factors in the tracks that draw out those feelings in all of us. I don’t normally get into reaction / analysis videos, I would rather just listen to the music, but yours have been a joy thus far! Thank you, & here’s to many more!
I saw Weird Al in concert in Louisville Ky. A few years ago. It was one of the best concerts I have ever been to. He did costume changes for every song and was really high energy. He is an awesome musician and showman!
It is fun to see a professional vocalist with the same sense of humor I had when I was 7. Cause holy crap I loved this record :) Weird Al is a national treasure.
I love the interview that was done with Weird Al about this video being made. They couldn't get a good size for the inflation on his face so Al just looked at the effects artist and said "Just inflate it till it pops." When they turned the camera away from his face, the balloons literally popped from being inflated so much. I laughed so hard when I first read that.
I remember watching this for the first time with tears streaming down my face I was laughing so hard. Bad was still in rotation on MTV when it came out so you could see how he parodied every single shot. It is a thing of absolute comedy perfection.
Please please PLEASE analyze Tahnee Cain and the Tryanglz - Burnin' in the Third Degree. Honestly one of the best songs ever, featured in the 1984 "The Terminator". You will love her range and overall singing ability!!
it makes me so happy how much attention you give to the details of Weird Al's work here! I know he can be very detail-oriented (he's described himself as a perfectionist and a control freak in the past) and it's wonderful to to see that work appreciated and highlighted.
You should also check out the side-by-side comparison between Weird Al's "Fat" and Michael Jackson's "Bad". They're quite well in sync and nearly shot-for-shot.
The word genius is commonly used to describe Al's talent and rightfully so but you put it truly on point calling him legendary, his effect on the world of music is immeasurable Bright Blessings Elizabeth ✨
I am a 76 yo drummer and singer who deeply appreciates your vocal knowledge...I am learning a great deal from you ! Your assessment of Weird Al is also spot on. His creations are near flawless from over all concept to the smallest details. PS I love your long hair and love love love your sense of humor !
Your joy with this is infectious. If you'd like to hear more of a ballad from Al, check out 'you don't love me anymore'. He shows a slightly different vocal approach.
I have to have watched 50 reactions to this song and I have never seen such a combination of vocal information and hysterical glee at the content. Amazing reaction!
Al is so underrated as an artist, he is seen as just a comic variation of the stars he portraits, but he is so much more, And that is witnessed by so many artist appreciating him doing versions of their songs, they recognise an artist.
Since you mentioned a lot of opera trivia in this, it’d be interesting seeing what you think of Ironmouse and her recovering her opera singing talents. Her illness changed her voice and support system so much.
There is nothing quite like seeing Weird Al live. I got to years ago, he did Fat IN the fat suit in August in an outdoor venue. Amazing experience. His encore was Albuquerque. Will never forget it as long as I live.
Michael Jackson had a great sense of humor...he was a BIG fan of Al's...he even let Al use the same parking lot location to film the video in, which is why it looks so much like the original...he is on the same set location, which totally helps the video look more authentic...So kudos to MJ for having a wonderful sense of humor (not like Prince lol)
Prince could have had him do a tune and sell even more but his giant ego got in the way and Al decided to do the Purple Rain Polka. Yeah Al dunked on Prince pretty hard. A real nut dangler to be sure. Prince was amazingly great but he kinda knew it a little too much. I remember when he was on stage with like 8 legends of the axe and they were doing “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”. Prince took like a 45 second solo that was insane. It was so good. But all you can remember is the other 7 legends wondering when he was gonna stop so they could get a lick or two in. He could cut both ways.
Weird Al is a fricking genius lyricist, this song has my absolute favorite lyric of all time: "When i sit around the house i really sit around the house".
Weird Am not only does individual parodies, but also does artist style parody. For example, The Biggest Ball of Twine (in Minnesota) is the best Woody Guthrie song of all time. He does multiple genres, not just pop or rock. He does theme songs, cartoon songs, rap, raggae, grunge, r&b, musical theater, and of course polka.
For something from the start of Weird Al's career, I suggest 'Another One Rides the Bus', based upon Queen's 'Another One Bites the Dust'. It's just Weird Al's voice, his accordion, and a guy beating the empty accordion case like a drum.
I used to listen to Dr. Demento when I lived in LA in the late 1970's. I remember hearing Al's first effort, My Bologna on that show. The Knack's debut record was killer, and Al's parody was a highlight among all the dementia. He was a stand-out right from the start! @@seanroberts4011
Elizabeth, I have no idea how a 4 minute song is turned into 36 minutes? I didn't realize it could be broken down that much! I'm glad you caught the chin and mousetrap jokes, hilarious! I like Weird Al because he parodies artists and groups I don't like so it's extra hysterical for me, plus Al is also an all around nice man! Please react to Eat It, Word Crimes, Stuck In The Drive Thru(you'll have fun with this one), and my personal favorite One More Minute, etc... Thank you!
9:45 Al has a bunch of hoops dangling from his belt, but that was a critical comedy error. He should have had soup ladles, spoons, and various kitchen utensils dangling from his belt.
When you are talking about sound effects in this video you are smiling so much and it's most definitely contagious! I love seeing your reactions because it just makes me happy! Please keep up the great work! ❤
Man, I grew up with Weird Al and Frank Zappa with their comedy music, and it's so great to see an in-depth dissection of Al's great work. Fun fact, Weird Al had request Paul McCartney if he could do a parody of Live and Let die which Paul had said he could do it until he heard the cover was called "Chicken Pot Pie" which Paul didn't like them promoting killing chickens so he asked if he could change the parody and so Weird Al just ended up dropping it. One of the few other musicians to say no was Prince, who said no to a Purple Rain parody and a Raspberry Beret parody.
One of Coolio's people approved "Amish Paradise" but then when it came out Coolio said it was disrespectful. After that, Al decided that he would only accept approvals directly from the artist. A notable "no" is James Blunt's record company who wouldn't approve Al's "You're Pitiful" parody of "Your Beautiful". As a result the Wikipedia page that Al is editing in the "White and Nerdy" video says "Atlantic Records Sucks!". I've seen Al live twice and he did the "You're Pitiful" parody in concert.
Pretty sure you knew this, but Weird Al did a style parody, well probably more of a worshipful homage, of Zappa called Genius In France, which is mind-blowing, with Dweezil guesting on guitar. Maybe others will want to check it out if they haven't.
Recently, when Al tours, (which he does a lot), he only performs his original songs. He has so many, that the set list is different every night. I've seen him 3 times in the last few years and his voice has improved so freakin' much. Someone posted a video of him singing his original song Velvet Elvis on UA-cam, and his harmonies are incredible. His band is outrageously talented. They too have won Grammys in their own right. During Covid Al posted a video of him performing his original song, GERMS, and his vocal range is sooo impressive. I would love to see what you have to say about him hitting his amazing high notes following the low notes.
You can take his lyrics to a whole other level, as he perfectly matches the number of syllables and vowel sounds to the original, yet still changes the actual words and meaning and somehow keeps the whole thing cogent. For example here, in Michael's original sound effect "shamawn", Al says "Ham on, ham on, whole wheat".
Been a quite a while since I seen one of your videos. I knew you were having a baby, hope that went well. Followed you for years, I love how you evaluate singers voices.
Screw everyone, use your individual size in a way that works for you. It could be singing or stage acting, or even just speaking in front of a few people at work. Your individual take on how to communicate with an audience changes with every different group you stand in front of. It is scary the first time, but learn to love it.
I love weird al. I've gotten to see him live 2 times, and his shows are some of the best I've seen. He does most of his songs in costume, so there's alot of fill time, during which they play snippets of his various shown in the background. I honestly can say you can't go wrong with any of his songs.
Weird Al really is a national treasure. I’ve loved him since I was little kid and now my kids listen to him too. White and Nerdy is an amazing song because Al’s flow is on point and so perfect…and hilarious, of course.
Weird All is one of the best concerts I've ever been to. He wears costumes during different songs, and yes that include this fat suit when he sings this song!
Weird Al is a master of the English language. He has to use the original song as a frame, replace words and sentences, and has to have it all fit together on top of it using the new theme he's chosen for the parody to be about. Weird Al Yankovic has to be the most impressive word smith in history for doing this so many times over the years he's been making parodies!
I absolutely LOVE these videos! I’ve commented on some that it loops me into orbit to see the childlike wonder and joy in what Ms. Zharoff does. It truly is uplifting and inspiring.

Just saying, if you love word play, then you should check out Weird Al's parody of the "Blurred Lines" song called "Word Crimes".
Ooo, ooo do the "Saga Begins" or "Yoda" or both by Weird Al
Reaction/Analysis/Deep Dive Request:
As you are a HUGE fan of Queen AND Freddie Mercury, I'm sure that you're WELL aware of the fact that one of the key elements to their sound is the 3-part vocal harmonies of Freddie, Brian May (Lead guitarist) & Roger Taylor (Drummer) (Bass guitarist John Deacon DID NOT contribute vocals in the studio.
Here are 2 Queen songs with Brian and Roger each singing lead vocals, respectively:
"'39": ua-cam.com/video/kE8kGMfXaFU/v-deo.html (Brian May on lead vocals)
"I'm in Love with My Car": ua-cam.com/video/a8EYUKmmnqc/v-deo.html (Roger Taylor on lead vocals)
BONUS! (WARNING: Contains false ending, let video play til the end!)
"You Take My Breath Away": ua-cam.com/video/v_wLNqUz7pM/v-deo.html
Of all of Al's work, this would not be the one I would show and react to.
Obesity runs in my family, and my wife deals with it herself. Obesity is both a physical as well as neurological dependency disease. The point to shame people into fatal decisions including anorexia and bulimia on one end and death from over eating on the other. This video is for entertainment but also reflection on our culture towards a much more serious health issue.
What is great about MJ is that not only did he give Weird Al permission to parody the song, he allowed him to use the original sets of the video. Very cool!
Both this and "Smells like Nirvana" used the original video sets. You simply have to respect the original artists for their support.
@@michaelsamse84 Same janitor in both videos as well
@@michaelsamse84 Yes, but many artists fail to see that a good parody is the ultimate form of a compliment.
The great thing about Weird Al is that he's not a pedophile.
@@michaelsamse84 Living With a Hernia had the same backup band as the original.
What has always impressed me about Weird Al is his ability to sound like the artist he is parodying but still sound like himself at the same time.
As much as the band is able to amp so many disparate musical styles.
"Weird Al" "he can't sing" "oh yes he can".
The band as whole to. Couldn't tell you how many times a Weird Al parody has come on in my playlist and almost until he starts singing I think it is the actual song.
He doesn't sound like them, he just gets the rhythm of the original songs and makes it his own.
He's like Kirby of the Music industry
I would love to watch a tea time with Weird Al. He has been such an influencer with a HUGE range that never really gets the recognition he deserves because his songs are parodies.
He'd probably do it as well, by all accounts he's the nicest guy in the world.
I CONCUR!
I think he'd find it funny to have tome with Elizabeth.
This must happen!
I saw Weird Al live on his Bad Hair tour when I was a kid. For "Fat", he ran out on stage in the full fat suit and danced around in it. I remember this one choreographed moment where he hopped up and down and when he landed, his whole band bounced up in unison. It was such a little touch, but it stuck in my 12 year-old brain forever.
he still does that lol
Loved that moment too. He does a great job.
"Over the top yet specific and well done" is actually the perfect description of everything Weird Al's done.
Al sent me several autographs when I was young. I would mail in my cassette covers, and I always got them returned signed. Al was one of my first heroes. A gents gent is he.
Oh man I wish I knew that was something I could have done!
But yes, Elizabeth should totally look into interviewing him.
Don't forget "Dare To Be Stupid" from the 1985 Transformers soundtrack.
oh yeah Hardware Store is greatness. Love that song so much!
Weird Al is a parody genius, but his originals don't get enough credit: I recommend "One More Minute" as one of his best.
Follow that up with "You Don't Love Me Anymore."
Absolutely my favorite Weird Al song. Great call.
@@kevinj9059Also a quality recommendation.
"Nature Trail to Hell in 3D"
"One More Minute" is my favorite Weird Al song, difficult as it is to pick out just one favorite from his entire repertoire.
I think Al is extremely dangerous and will destroy the world. Oh, AL not Al. Nevermind.
@@stevennewman4778💀
“Trapped in the drive thru” is quite a vocal tour de force with range and runs and such. “Hardware store” is prob the most excellent example of his prowess in clear diction and lyrical pacing.
What about "Genius in France", the awesome Frank Zappa parody?
Fun Fact: It took over 3 hours to put the "fat" makeup on Weird Al. Also, let's see a reaction please for "Hardware Store" because Weird Al shows off RIDICULOUS breath control.
Smells Like Teen Spirit is another that shows off his control--singing while gargling water! And also the clearest intentionally mumbled diction you could ever ask for!
"It took over 3 hours to put the "fat" makeup on Weird Al"
I'm not impressed. Christian Bale would have put the effort in to actually gain the weight.
@@quintoblanco8746 Not for a parody music video he wouldn't.
Before the video came out, he went outside in the fat suit and the tabloids ran articles that he had let himself go and gained a ton of weight.
@@poorcolossus i don't think he was being serious
Something that I think has always separated Al from lesser parodists is his attention to detail. He parodies EVERYTHING. The instrumentation on the track, the vocal style, the look of the video - everything. And it's always perfect. I would suggest "White and Nerdy" it's rap, but it's perfect parody - maybe not right for the channel, but you'll love it!
Yoda is another catchy one....then, again, it's Weird Al. So many good ones.
Or Hardware Store, just from a lyric perspective it's phenomenal.
Amish Paradise for the same reason as White and Nerdy
@@JesterNR1Agreed, Hardware Store is fantastic
the Smells like Teen spirit parody goes insane with the sound effects while managing to be far more coherent than the original
Plus same gym, same janitor, Tony Hawk, and Dick Van Patten.
And her giggle is irresistible!
Heck yeah! Dr Demento and his squeaky duck/horn if i remember correctly.
And proper grammar. Most other people would sing "I'm the only one that gets a tan," but Al knows it's "who gets a tan." This has always bothered me, even in cartoon intros.
Al with enunciation? Hardware Store is a perfect example. it's an original piece and the recording is all one take
Weird Al has SO many good songs that it's impossible to recommend just one! So:
For astonishing vocal technique, "Hardware Store".
For specific song parody brilliance, "Amish Paradise" and "The Saga Begins".
For artist style parody brilliance, "Bob".
For comedy and storytelling, "Trapped in the Drive-Thru" and "Albuquerque".
I would also say that Living With A Hernia is an amazing artist style parody
I get a kick out of watching reaction videos to "Bob" and seeing the moment when they realize that the song is a series of palindromes. The guy is an absolute genius.
I agree that Hardware Store is genius
"I Lost at Jeopard" is a fave, here.
Also have to check out "Word Crimes" for its perfect grammar usage
For all the good parts of this video, i especially like the guys in the background.
Some genuinely heavy dudes keeping up with some good cardio and a pretty crisp dance routine.
Props to those guys, they did great.
Just imagine if he'd gotten Sammo Hung to be in it.
One of the dancers is actually a pizza delivery guy who got offered a bonus paycheck if he was willing to be in the video.
One of the best concerts I've ever been to.
I love One More Minute!
You nailed it Elizabeth! Weird Al brings a level of excellence to his work that puts him at a level all his own. It would be fascinating if you could ever get a tea time with him.
Would love to! ❤
Elizabeth's gleeful giggling in this reaction made my day!😂
Exactly I'm living for this reaction and how much it makes her giggle
sigh.. the heavenly giggle 😍
There are a few short videos about this of Lisa talking to Al on UA-cam you might find interesting.
...and in the backward scene he moves his mouth "backwards" so the mouth motions line up with the lyrics when played forward. Amazing!
Mr Popeil got his own song on In 3D.
@@Pwecko And Mr Popeil's half-sister Lisa Popeil has sung backup on Weird Al's albums since 1983, including on the song about Ron Popeil.
Lisa has also served as Weird Al's voice coach, beginning in the 1980s.
One of my favourites for just how clever the lyrics are is "Word Crimes." There's so much to choose from, though, when it comes to Weird Al.
Oh, I second this as a song that I think you (Elizabeth) will really appreciate!
Hardware Store.
And the fact that he has the same band for 30 years... same guitar, same drums, same bass.... very few performers can say that.
That shows dedication on the part of those guys, and they have a huge musical range. But it also has to say something about what he must be like to work and do business with.
More like 40 at this point!
Not only that, they’re amazingly good players. You have to think they just spend a lot of their time laughing at “work”.
I'm pretty sure it's been longer than 30 years. I have an original release of most of his albums and his first album released in 83.
Jon "Bermuda" Schwartz joined him in 1980. Steve Jay and Jim "Kimo" West joined him in 1982. Ruben Valtierra joined him in 1991. So Valtierra is the new guy and has only been with him 32 years.
“Tacky”, Weird Al’s version of “Happy”, is brilliant… And the music video he produced for it is genius…
Honestly, it took forever before I actually heard the original song, and I was surprised how many more lines Weird Al does.
When weird Al asked for Michael Jackson's permission to parody Bad, Michael not only said yes, but let him use the same set from the video. The crew was about to break it down to get it ready for Al's video when Al freaked out and told them not to touch it.. So this set is actually the same from the original video.
His video for the song Smells like Nirvana was filmed in the same location, using the same props and actors as the Nirvana video.
He didn't "freak out." He just wanted to make sure they didn't change the set. He wanted it to look the same, and they were already preparing to mess with it so he had to work fast to get them to stop.
I guess that can be misconstrued as a "freak out" though.
It's not the same set as used in the Bad video. It's a replica that was used for a stage presentation.
Same gym, many of the same extras (if I remember correctly), Tony Hawk in the crowd, and the late Dick Van Patten making a cameo.
Yes, since she did “Smells Like Teen Spirit” a few months ago, this would be a natural. And it’s genius!!
A few others are Word Crimes (Blurred Lines), Living with a Hernia (Living in America), and Trapped in the Drive thru (Trapped in the Closet).
White and Nerdy is my next favorite. A parody of Ridin' Dirty, it shows that Al has crazy flow while spittin' bars. In other words, the guy can rap!
Great to see Weird Al getting some well-deserved recognition for his vocal chops from an accomplished professional! Even greater is watching Elizabeth utterly unable to contain her glee at each and every detail of this masterfully executed parody. 🥰
Couldn't agree more! Thanks!
You really should find some of his originals or his style parodies @@TheCharismaticVoice
I would recommend are One more minute, Dare to be stupid, UHF, You dont love me anymore, Albuquerque or Don’t Download This Song
The 3 first might be the most interesting, but they are all good songs to show of his talent as an artist
One of my favorite songs and videos as a kid and still to this day. Al's attention to detail and creativity are everything that separate him from any other artist. A national treasure.
23:35
Great Location ... perfect location:
Michael was such a big fan of Al's that when Al asked about doing a Bad Parody, Michael asked him if he wanted the original set as it was still available.
Party in the CIA
Like a Surgeon live is something to behold. All I’ll say is, Ruben+pointy bra=comedy gold.
"Fat" is also the stellar capstone to both his concerts that I have been to. He is offstage less than 90 seconds and comes out fully decked for "Fat."
I’ve seen him live four times. The only concerts I’ve seen that were better were Rush and Paul McCartney.
I don't know if you have ever seen Amish Paradise by Al. But at the end of the video, they film him doing his entire part backwards in a busy farm yard, so they can reverse the playback in the video. It is unbelievable how well he pulls it off.
Especially when you consider that he had to phonetically sing that line backwards to get the correct mouth movement on the reversed playback!
i remember when it premiered, artists that let him cover them have a sense of humor, you made me laugh alot i have missed this video and was happy to see it again.
Weird Al is a GOAT. He created such masterpieces, and sadly much of his humor would be considered "problematic" these days if anyone even came close to doing what he did. This song would not have even made it on the radio if it was written today.
Absolutely! I can't believe no one's tried to "cancel" him yet...
Hardware Store is genius :)
Was great!
Same! Late 90s if I remember correctly.
"You ain't fat, you ate nothing!...YOU ATE NOTHING!!!!" 😂😂
Please check out White and Nerdy soon.
@@alanlafond9705 MJ didn't turn it down, he just didn't let Weird Al sell records of it, it's only able to be performed in concerts.
I'm sure you get far more suggestions than you could ever hope to cover, but Weird Al's "White and Nerdy" is amazing - more rap than singing, but hilarious. And it has Donnie Osmond going over the top with some crazy dance moves. You should definitely check it out.
I second this!
I think White and Nerdy is his best parody, but give credit to the OG Another One Rides the Bus.

@@Aldeth80you know it!
You, young lady, are a hoot! It's such a good time to watch you react to Weird Al and laugh. It makes my day!
Someone did a side-by-side with this video and the original, and scene for scene, Weird Al matched the original. His attention to detail is amazing. That's why I love this video so much.
Well said!
"White and Nerdy"
There was an interview about Weird Al using Smells Like Teen Spirit. When the Nirvana was asked permission, their initial response was "it's not about food is it?"
Omg she hasn’t seen this until now??? I feel old af. 😂😂😂😂😂

The word genius is commonly used to describe Al's talent and rightfully so but you put it truly on point calling him legendary, his effect on the world of music is immeasurable
Bright Blessings Elizabeth ✨
I love it when you make me hear little things I’ve never heard before in a song. It makes me love and appreciate music so much more ❤
100% agree. The close up of his face expanding was amazing. Reminds me of the guy at the end of Big Trouble In Little China.
I am a 76 yo drummer and singer who deeply appreciates your vocal knowledge...I am learning a great deal from you ! Your assessment of Weird Al is also spot on. His creations are near flawless from over all concept to the smallest details. PS I love your long hair and love love love your sense of humor !
Watching your analysis of Al's songs makes me feel like I'm hearing them for the first time again! I LOVE it! Thank you so much for what you do!
MJ was certainly the master of the theatrical music video, or hip-hopera. That Weird AL pulled so much from that is what makes this so epic.
Elizabeth first did Weird Al's "Eat It", now what might be considered a logical follow up parody, Weird Al's "I'm Fat" lol.
Grapefruit Diet would round out the trilogy
You're describing what happened for us? 🤔
@@fatpad00That parody doesn't get enough love, which is sad, because it's awesome.
@@fatpad00Addicted to Spuds would work also.
@@gregorymccasland2874 I think Al was going to take Purple Rain and call it Yellow Snow...but I could be wrong
Smells Like Nirvana
Finally! This man is a genius! I hope you react to more of him! Thank you!
For something from the start of Weird Al's career, I suggest 'Another One Rides the Bus', based upon Queen's 'Another One Bites the Dust'. It's just Weird Al's voice, his accordion, and a guy beating the empty accordion case like a drum.
The 'guy' is Jon 'Bermuda' Schwartz, and that was the start of Weird Al's band, live on the Dr. Demento Show...
@@seanroberts4011 I thought that was the case, but I wasn't 100% sure.
Thank you!
I'd watch for an hour! 🥰
She already did Eat It, but definitely want to see those others! Especially One More Minute & Trapped At The Drive-Thru.
Ya, Elizabeth should do Spike Jones and His City Slickers next. 😋
The genius behind the move of promoting healthy eating in the video that analyzes that song called fat is something beautiful to behold.
I love weird al. I've gotten to see him live 2 times, and his shows are some of the best I've seen. He does most of his songs in costume, so there's alot of fill time, during which they play snippets of his various shown in the background. I honestly can say you can't go wrong with any of his songs.
I've seen Fat thousands of times and it still makes me laugh today as much as I did when it first came out.
Weird Al really is a national treasure. I’ve loved him since I was little kid and now my kids listen to him too. White and Nerdy is an amazing song because Al’s flow is on point and so perfect…and hilarious, of course.
this is not only the original area that Michael recorded this video, Michael was VERY into helping Al with the choreography.
Weird All is one of the best concerts I've ever been to. He wears costumes during different songs, and yes that include this fat suit when he sings this song!
Oh my gosh, you have to watch his Amish Paradise and compare it to Coolio's original Gangster Paradise.
Yeah! Most people don't appreciate how outstanding he is at finding the *perfect* word for maximum effect.
I absolutely LOVE these videos! I’ve commented on some that it loops me into orbit to see the childlike wonder and joy in what Ms. Zharoff does. It truly is uplifting and inspiring.
