I was not around back in the day when the sleep mechanic was in place, but I wish they bring it back as an immersion/quality of life mechanic. There's so many beds all over the game world that serve no purpose other than decoration and it would be neat if you could actually sleep in them.
I'm thinking they could be used similarly to beds in many other games as a way to instantly restore health and maybe drained stats and run energy as well. Banks already do that for health and it is kind of redundant, but perhaps this feature could be removed from banks since it makes more sense for beds and would certainly be more immersive.

It makes me feel weird that many of the ideas in this video, including the open source captcha solver and using ml, like svm or nn to actually solve the captcha, are all ideas I would have thought of today. I think I expected people didn’t know that much almost 2 decades ago, but the ml models had been out for a long time and good programmers in 2003 were probably amazing because of how much knowledge they had to have. It must have been pretty fun in the early days of the internet when things were so much more hackable because there wasn’t as much built in security.
Anyways, amazing video. This is really cool.

I'm a data scientist and I work with artificial intelligence and machine learning. For clarification, it's optical character recognition not optical content recognition but you did a great job explaining it. As for the dictionary of words used in leosleep you are 100% correct about your suspicion that it was finding similar words to the characters it detected. levenshtein distance is one such method of measuring the closeness in spelling of two words. Runescape could probably be doing a much better job at detecting bots. The behavioral patterns of players and bots will likely be very distinct and no matter how hard the bots try the only way to approximate a real player is to really play. If you ask me, great programmers like to bot runescape because it's challenging, if runescape really wanted to do something about the bots they would share a tone of data and launch a competition to catch bots. Big companies sometimes do this through sites like kaggle, I know I would probably give it a go - especially if it meant improving this nostalgic game.

    • @loloioi

Ive started learning runescript just bcuz its so difficult. 0 knowledge but studying wut i get from a friend. Im lowballing it but millions of dollars r sent to jagex from bots buying membership. Jagex wont do anything to the bots until they majorly effect the economy amd even then its like they set an amount to make off the botting accounts thru bonds or whatever. No reddit post, tweet, or riot in game will make jagex do anything before they make the set amount if u ask me

This wasn't close to machine learning. Hence the need for the dictionary (which was very creative). Mind you, the original program was also just a database which had collected images. If he would have been able to teach the software to learn from it's mistakes, then it would approximate ml better. For example, if the machine was able to 'reason' that it's messing up on the letter 'l' constantly when it has to type the word color and was also able to figure out 'why' (i.e. analyse the consistencies in errors). In other words, a program with its own feedback loop and also the ability to accurately apply the feedback loop in a useful matter.

In fact, they’re happy to boast about millions of account creations and 200,000 consecutive players, even though any player can walk around and shortly realise at least half of the numbers are inflated with bots. As you said, it’s been happening for 19 years, they aren’t going to fix it, because it’s not a problem to them.

For example, if packets was being sent and no mouse mouse movement you'll be logged out after 3 minutes.
Even down to reading the class names on the client and if they've been renamed via a deobber it'll stop you sending actions.
There is so much more information about the botting scene and how script writers then went on to write quests for jagex.

I remember the sleeping bags came out the same day that pickaxes were no longer just "pickaxes" and they finally added bronze - rune pickaxes. At the time all they did was click for you more, they didn't have a chance of gaining ore quicker. Rune giving the most clicks at 12. I also remember fatigue being a lot more lenient before sleeping bags, it would take much longer before you got to 100%. Beds were still useful too even when sleeping bags were out, because it would take less time to get your fatigue back to 0, so if there was a bed nearby you'd just go to one instead of use a sleeping bag. We don't even think about beds in modern runescape, but there's still hundreds of them everywhere. For example, did you even notice the beds they have in the edgeville monastery? :p There's 6 of them. I can name so many other examples. I was a very high level player in Runescape classic, I now play Runescape 3 and a little bit of old school.

I used one back towards the end of 2003 and after rs2 launch as I kept my original character on RSC. Towards the end, a website was created as well to track how many words you typed with a "highscores" like system. I would always do about 100 words a day, then auto all night as I slept. Some days I would wake up stuck on the sleep screen as not many people were inputting words at the time. I am pretty sure it was a live system meaning someone had to be on doing it for it to work. If they were not, you would wait until someone was online to type in the word.. oh the good days. Best part is they banned my account because I said I botted.. not for the 3 months I was actually botting 20+ hours a day :D

@7:17 the way it actually worked is that program came with a folder that had thousands of PNG images of every possible Captcha word. The program would be run in addition to the bot and would detect the screen while you were sleeping, take a screen shot of the sleep word, and matching it to one of the thousands of photos it kept filed. Each one of the images had the correct corresponding word filed as well, so it would just look up that image file, find the match, and attempt to type it. Once in a while it would take 2 or 3 tries. God damn though anyone remember the really popular one that used an Imp for its logo?

As a software engineer that started with VB6, that code is not advanced nor is it "clean". Also the flow diagram shown on the forum is about as basic as they come. Botting isn't hard to stop and they were on the right lines with the first RSC implementation. The only downside was that they gave an infinite (or long enough to have someone else complete it remotely) amount of time for the user to enter the captcha. An almost fail proof system would be to use an existing captcha solution such as Googles or CloudFlare's and have the user input invalidate on the server after 20-30 seconds. This would mean that bots would need to have either an army of people smashing captchas out all day long (which would defeat the point in botting) or they would have to sit there and wait for the captcha events themselves.
This should be implemented as a mandatory random event which you have the option of dismissing for 15 minutes, after which, the bot test must be completed regardless of where you are. This lets people who are in combat or in an unsafe place, get to somewhere that is safe before they continue game play. This works similar to the way the 6 hour logout works.
Would it slightly inconvenience players? Yeah once every 1 or two hours for a quick 15 second test. But the benefit is that the market prices would plummet overnight, GP inflation would reduce significantly and world resources would actually be available to use (i.e mining wouldn't have 4 bots contested over a single rock). It would 100% be worth it.

I unfortunately worked with VB6 professionally for just shy of 2 years, this guy wrote the entire virtual mouse controller & implemented unique functions. I remember well before ocr we use to use “cold feet” I believe someone on rscn programmed it maybe Kait but I’m not 100% it was essentially a crowd sourced sleeping cheat you’d do it for tickets and then in turn someone would do it for you to gain sleep tickets. This was around the time scar was leading the way in botting. Ocr didn’t come until later around 2004 right around the time rs2 was released

I remember sleepwalker/fatigue op lol. The worst part with fatigue op was if you were a slow typist or had high latency, it was hard to get credits as other people would beat you to it.
I used to write scripts for RSC/early RS2 for SCAR back when rscheatnet.com existed. I mainly did it for fun to learn coding, but ultimately gave up when my account was banned lol.
I actually managed to dig up an old script I wrote for SCAR that fished lobsters on karamja, and banked or certed them in draynor. I threw it on pastebin ( pastebin.com/UJLmjx4a ) if you want to see what a runescape script from 2003 looked like lol.
If I remember correctly, the OCR software like leosleep (and I think there was one called Furby OCR or something similar) wasn't really a thing until after RS2's release, and at that point Jagex didn't really care about RSC any more.

Good video but you could have added the massive flaw that the fatigue system had. When you were 99 fatigue and attacked a monster you would get combat xp but not hp xp because you were to tired. This lead to people botting accounts with 90 atk, def, str but able to have 80hp and since there were no highscores for rsc anymore staking went by health points. Imagine if today on osrs you would be able to stake on an account that has alot higher stats then oponent, but same hp

Can you make a video called "how much can a bot make in a month" and kinda break that down and see the numbers, if you invested your $6 for a month, how much gold could you make and the average amount of real world money you could make in return if you were to sell that gold? Think it would be a cool video idea.

People also did wood cutting and and lit the logs on fire and got to 97% and then attacked npc's to get defense and strength xp without gaining much hit points xp :) also ppl used dwarven stouts to get their att lowered under 8 and attacked dummies in varrock for no hit points but gained attack xp. Just thought I'd give you a little more input on what some ppl did back then
