When I speak about "Quality Content" this is exactly what I mean. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with vlogs and stuff like that, but this is just absolutely great content.
I have been looking for months for a tutorial like this. I can't believe there hasn't been more videos on this subject. I did find one other but it was so, so and not in depth like yours. Thank you so much for doing this video for those of us that seem to get all caught up in keeping focus. I for one have been lost. Great tutorial. Please keep us the good work.
Dude, fantastic freaking video. I’ve been searching far and wide for a decent auto-focus (while in video mode) tutorial and yours laid out the EXACT information I needed for my shoot tomorrow so THANK YOU!! So many terrible videos I had to sift through, and yours was a diamond in the ruff. I appreciated the way you gave examples of different scenarios to really demonstrate how to use the 4 methods in practical settings. Seriously, thanks so much.
One of the easiest ways to maintain focus with manual mode is to zoom in on something as far away and as detailed as possible then focus up. When you zoom back out everything is in focus. Even if the camera is moving it should work. You might have to reset it every now and then because of lighting. This is how we were taught when I was in college for video production. It has never failed me.
So refreshing to watch someone like you who speaks the right language and makes everything so immediately understood. You are a true breath of fresh air.
Hands down one of the best videos I've found on YT regarding this subject! As someone who wants to learn the basics and options creators use while recording - it took me about 40+ hours of watch time to finally stumble across your channel. Damn your algorithm, UA-cam! Thank you for the amazing content. Subbed for life!
During the interview focusing section if you can get a larger distance between the background and the talent you can use a slightly larger F (number) and then keep it locked on manual focus and you will still have the talent in focus OK even if they move.
Fantastic video. I believe you answered 95% of the issues us new to filming have about focus. You were able to make it manageable instead of so intimidating. Nice also to hear multiple takes, with possibly different settings etc.
I've always wanted to know how to keep tac sharp focus in a fight scene without having to raise the aperture. I've watched movies and TV shows where the action is going everywhere and it's always captured with such sharp focus. I think they achieve this with a high budget follow focus ring and a focus puller who knows how to predict peoples movements, but still. I just hate it when my actors give such an amazing performance, but we have to do the scene over again because focus wasn't sharp enough.
hey Parker, am a film maker from Ethiopia, probably you don't know but the stuffs ur teaching us really helping me good job buddy appreciate it keep up the good work !!
191 dislikes for this great video. Unbelievable. We still have such dull sunken folks. Lovely video dude. I'm from Sauni Video Productions, Bangalore India.
I bought this for my Canon fixed LCD screen. It's a game changer in bright sunlight! eCostConnection Elite Series 3.4x Magnification Adjustable Lock-In-Place LCD Viewfinder Fits Most 3" LCD Screens for Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Sony DSLR & Microfiber Cloth
David Hrzenjak I have the Panasonic G7, and while the autofocus isn't great, that flippy touchscreen has become one of the most useful things on my camera
A few thoughts- If you are going to raise your aperture be VERY cautious that you have a clean sensor, way too often I see videos where the dp used an f-stop like 11-22 because it was either too bright or wanted more in focus, in return there were specks of dust on the screen, usually you would be ok around 11-13 in my experience but the closer you get to 22 you are taking a chance. Because you cant always see the dust on the screen when you're shooting! Part of the reason I switched from DSLRs to Mirrorless cameras was because of focus peaking, on my lumix gh5 or even lumix g7 I am able to see what is in focus even if it is too bright or hard to see the screen clearly because of the focus peaking colors telling me what is in focus, I know you should not rely on this but it has not failed me yet and I use it for everything. Great video though very informative!
Great video!! How do you manage to shoot with lower aperture in daylight? Do you crank the shutter speed? even when shooting 24p? Cause I really don't like ND filters :)
Yepp i know, but you wont really notice if shooting slow motion. It also depends on how much movement there is in the shots. ND-filters usually degrades the image. Color casts, vignette, loss of sharpness :(
Try using a higher quality ND filter. A good ND filter should have no noticeable effect on image quality. They can be pricey so try buying one big one and use step down rings
Kris, I just saw this video Dec. 31st 11:20 pm. You did not fail. The fact is that you planned this shoot the best way you could, unfortunately things did not work out the way it should had worked. This situation brought out an aspect about you we never could have realized in your videos. This shows you are a man of integrity, a true captain who takes the fall for his own crew, and a relentless achiever. That was a test of your integrity and personality and I must say, you passed and this is what counts. Please let me know how I can be of assistance. You inspire me. Please let's connect. Yours In Service. -Leonard.
Wrong. Sony has the best autofocus system. There are 425 focus points on just the a6300. But the color quality is much better on Canon. I seriously love this channel so much though. Finally somebody I can understand.
It's not the same the amount of focus squares that a camera haves than the focus system. Im on Nikon, and I know and everyone knows that the Dual Pixel that canon have's is the most trustfull autofocus system all around.
Wow "that's all you got for us" you say! Parker, you gave me a ton of knowledge that's going to make me a better videographer. Thank you, much appreciated!
I love where you filmed this. I grew up down the street from the church you're at and it was like going home to see those familiar mountains. Used to hike all over those ridges and canyons. Very nice advice in the video as well. Thanks!
George A. de Araújo it’s the f stop number that’s large/high not the physical size of the aperture. I always got this confused too. A large aperture is a large number f stop even though the size created by the diaphragms is small.
I really need help guys. I want to get into vlogs and photography. I want a computer that can do video and photo editing. I also want a very good DSLR. It has to be DSLR. My budget for a laptop is $500 and the same for a camera. I know I am on a tight budget, but please help me as much as you can!!!
You can have a really fast auto focus but thats not the most necessary thing... The quality of the video that the camera give to us is the most important
Tiago Guerra I have not tested the 80d, but I have tested the 70d and t7i ( the sensor from the t7i is supposed to be similar to the 80d) and I found the quality of the video from these two cameras unusable. Horrible artifacts, terrible DR, terrible in low light. I tried changing the contrast to the lowest setting but the DR didn't become better at all. Canon crop cameras have line skipping which causes this horrible video quality. I compared the 70d and t7i to the Sony a6000 and the Nikon d500, both were immeasurably better. The a6000 has very nice IQ and the d500 has gorgeous video IQ. The Canon cropped cameras has worse video IQ than the Canon g40 which is a camcorder with a .5" sensor.
Tiago Guerra Sony shoots 6k and downscale on pure 4k. Also in s log 2 slog 3. Well and you can zoom on prime lenses too! Without explaining all the great features sony has to offer.non long time ago i was a canon shooter 5dm5,7d,and more..I missed all the beauty of the sony cameras... well not anymore.
This video was so helpful and inspiring. I've been thinking of getting the Zhiyun Crane for my Sony a6500 just cuz I thought that that would give me the steadiest shots but this video made me realize that a Glidecam is a much better option *for me* since it enables the option of manually focusing and beeing able to see the screen when shooting. and when you want to get some simple handheld shots just simply grap the Glidecam with one hand rather than taking the camera off the gimbal. Thanks!
Just picked up a 50mm 1.8 lens. Love it for portraits, but wanted to use it for video as well. That was much needed answers on focus. Thank you sir. Subscribed!
Great tips! Years ago I imagined there is a distance sensor gadget where it beeps faster if the object move away from focus, so that we can maintain the distance, but still no such gadget. :)
Hey parker, can you do a video on shutter speeds? I see a lot of people really push the 180 rule but i see a lot of your video shot in the middle of the day with no nd filter at super wide open apertures and super fast shutter speeds. Can you make a video explaining your approach to shutter speed? When to keep the 180 and when to break it?
Step one, hire a focus puller. Done Also, with fool control, you can wirelessly adjust focus on the weapon. So a focus puller can work with an iPhone if you don't want to bring in a WLCS or stray away from cheap canon glass
When I speak about "Quality Content" this is exactly what I mean. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with vlogs and stuff like that, but this is just absolutely great content.
Videographers need the most;
1. Good eyes
2. Good muscle
Damn right
Has eyes on his back
and good wallet
money
Yep

That's only on a parfocal lens like those found on camcorders. DSLR's don't work that way.
So refreshing to watch someone like you who speaks the right language and makes everything so immediately understood. You are a true breath of fresh air.
Brother... thank you for your knowledge that you share
Hands down one of the best videos I've found on YT regarding this subject! Fantastic video! Thank you so much.
Best filmmaking channel ever
8 takes makes me feel better about my lack of focus pulling skills
love the tutorial ,solved many doubts about focusing ,specially "it is okay to have some out of focus moment " - Really interesting and new :)
Super helpful. Thank you for making a detailed, methodical video that other videography youtubers have not took the time to make. A true inspiration!
I love the way this video is laid out. Very respectful of the time and attention of your audience. Great work and thanks you!
Next tutorial on "cinematographer's work out" pls :D
CZTachyonsVN 😂👍
Haha... I was thinking the same thing.. Certainly need to be quite fit to film or at least simi-decent fit. :D
Glide Cam - the workout comes free. ;)
lol 😂👍
id love to see this.. workout cinematography
I have watched countless videos and usually I get one key tip per vid. This had like 20 in one vid. Thank you so much.
During the interview focusing section if you can get a larger distance between the background and the talent you can use a slightly larger F (number) and then keep it locked on manual focus and you will still have the talent in focus OK even if they move.

This is the most educational video about video focus on youtube. Thank you so much for this.
This was so helpful! Thank you for actually showing us examples of everything you were explaining!
hey Parker, am a film maker from Ethiopia, probably you don't know but the stuffs ur teaching us
really helping me good job buddy appreciate it keep up the good work !!
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, that information is priceless........I appreciate you and your time tyou take to share and help up and coming videographers
Grading tutorial please??
191 dislikes for this great video. Unbelievable. We still have such dull sunken folks. Lovely video dude. I'm from Sauni Video Productions, Bangalore India.
Please do a video on audio!
Probably the best video about focussing I've watched .
so parker, are you arms so big because of the glidecam?
rad0ri or by doing something else ;)
Creators' Corner lol
1 thumb up is simply not enough for videos like this one. You just answered a lot of the questions that have been bugging me. Thanks!:)
Hi Parker! I wanted to thank you for making these videos. If only I knew about the flexizone option before... :) . I'm really thankful!
you don't need to switch to photo mode to focus like this, you can setup the af-on back button to do that, it's awesome! Totally worth checking.
I'm confused by the gains, how to curl the gimble
This was the best tutorial/example of focusing. I have seen on UA-cam.
thank you man,it was just so helpful,in fact every video you make is always helpful
8:54 that guy dropped his phone XD
XD
Malachi M 😂😂😂
😂👍
This is the best video on UA-cam on this subject!
really great tips Thanks for a nice Video
This is great. I'm sending this to all of my favorite video makers.
Another helpful tutorial! Can you recommend a cheaper Canon DSLR with that brilliant AF system in video mode?
B. Hoffmann here's a list of the cameras going down in price with dual pixel and
1dx ii
5D IV
6D ii
7d ii
80D
77D
70D
800d
Rebel sl2 (200D)
Abdulrahman Ateya the main reasons why i bought the canon 70d is that autofocus and flippy touchscreen. can not imagine not having those features
David Hrzenjak I have the Panasonic G7, and while the autofocus isn't great, that flippy touchscreen has become one of the most useful things on my camera
Abdulrahman Ateya but you get 4k
i cant wait for the time when my budget will support 4k workflow
A few thoughts- If you are going to raise your aperture be VERY cautious that you have a clean sensor, way too often I see videos where the dp used an f-stop like 11-22 because it was either too bright or wanted more in focus, in return there were specks of dust on the screen, usually you would be ok around 11-13 in my experience but the closer you get to 22 you are taking a chance. Great video though very informative!
Great video!! How do you manage to shoot with lower aperture in daylight? Do you crank the shutter speed? even when shooting 24p? Cause I really don't like ND filters :)
Mattias Nilsson if you crank the shutter you lose the cinematic rule so really the only way is to shoot with ND filters how come you don't like them?
Yepp i know, but you wont really notice if shooting slow motion. It also depends on how much movement there is in the shots. ND-filters usually degrades the image. Color casts, vignette, loss of sharpness :(
Very true , when I shoot at higher frame rates I need to shoot a little more than double to smooth motion even more so for faster action
Try using a higher quality ND filter. A good ND filter should have no noticeable effect on image quality. They can be pricey so try buying one big one and use step down rings
Im using a good ND and step down rings. It works okey but if you push the ND to much you get vignette. Works good for some stops.
Kris, I just saw this video Dec. 31st 11:20 pm. You did not fail. The fact is that you planned this shoot the best way you could, unfortunately things did not work out the way it should had worked. tell's you something about an too expensiv auto-focus system and grabs an 1DX Mark II (5k+) and has an RED-rig in his trunk. lmao
I clicked on this video with so many questions in my head and you answered all of them. Thank you that was very helpful
Apart from the focus tutorial, the color grading is brilliant. Plz help where I can find these cool color gradings
I'm wanting to know where the color grades are coming from also!!!
Sometimes the best is just a simple S curve which is really nice and makes pop like that
Really Great Description for using all the different focusing Techniques, Opened my eyes to endless use! Thanks a Bunch.
Wrong. Sony has the best autofocus system. There are 425 focus points on just the a6300. But the color quality is much better on Canon. I seriously love this channel so much though. Finally somebody I can understand.
hey Parker are you currently using the Helium 8k sensor with the EPIC W or the Weapon?
I agree, Sony even allows you to select which face you want to track in a multi-person scenario.
canon is better in video because if transitions smoother than 6300 which doesn't look very natural/cinematic. sony is better and faster in photo.
It's not the same the amount of focus squares that a camera haves than the focus system. Im on Nikon, and I know and everyone knows that the Dual Pixel that canon have's is the most trustfull autofocus system all around.
For Video Canon Dual Pixel Auto Focus wins hands down 🙌🏼
I've learned so much from this video. Wow🤯
waiting for more tutorials
Wow "that's all you got for us" you say! Parker, you gave me a ton of knowledge that's going to make me a better videographer. Thank you, much appreciated!
Your videos are the best!!!! What picture profile do you use with your 1DX?
I love where you filmed this. I grew up down the street from the church you're at and it was like going home to see those familiar mountains. Used to hike all over those ridges and canyons. Very nice advice in the video as well. Thanks!
Is this on Wasatch in Sandy as you go toward Bell Canyon Lake ?
Yep, exactly. About 11600 south. If you keep going north on Wasatch Blvd you'll get to the trailhead for Bell Canyon on the east side of Wasatch.
When he says Canon has the best af system....Sony be like- hold my 🍻
3 yrs ago
Thank u! 😊🤩
8:52 dropped his phone
😂👍
rack focus is also an option if you have magic lantern installed. from there you can toggle between two focus points
Damn GH5 does all that while recording so unpractical for run and gun. Way to go Canon.
Never thought about using the Aperture setting to keep focus, that's a cool tip right there.
Are you from utah?
Trevor Joren I think he is
This is definitely filmed in Utah. Would bet money that he is. ;)
ye
I was thinking the same thing.
Nd boom. Salt lake temple. There is your answer. lol
eye af is a good option for mirrorless shooters.
notification squad here
Best video ever to understand the focus techniques!
You talk in HIGH APERTURE - f/11 to f/22, but technically are not these the SMALL APERTURE?
George A. de Araújo it’s the f stop number that’s large/high not the physical size of the aperture. I always got this confused too. A large aperture is a large number f stop even though the size created by the diaphragms is small.
Thank you SONY for existing
You sir, are very attractive
Always super helpful. Thanks @ Parker.
I really need help guys. I want to get into vlogs and photography. I want a computer that can do video and photo editing. I also want a very good DSLR. It has to be DSLR. do yoi have a phone.... Thats all you need... JUST START UPLOADING>>>> Thats waht i did and now I am at 100 subs... just kepe uploading my dude!
same I used to be obssessed in gear... but I realized the key to success is to master whats in front of the camera to hone you craft...!
I already do exactly what you mention in this video, yet I still watched every bit of it. Nicely done!
Wrong! Sony 6500 and 6300 are the world BEST and fastest autofocus system out there! Canon is wayyyyyy behind
You can have a really fast auto focus but thats not the most necessary thing... The quality of the video that the camera give to us is the most important
Tiago Guerra sony a6300 is way better quality wise than Canon on the same price .4k anf 1080p 120fps slog what a deal
I do not thing that, but each one as is opinion. To me Cannon is the best of all cameras all there. (I am not including Red Camera)
Tiago Guerra I have not tested the 80d, but I have tested the 70d and t7i ( the sensor from the t7i is supposed to be similar to the 80d) and I found the quality of the video from these two cameras unusable. This is like one of the best videos ever.
You are Such a Great Artist. I am Following to you since 2 years. Thanks for All the tips which you share with us.... I Truly Respect you.
Thanks man, helped a lot. Why people have disliked this i have no idea.
This video was so helpful and inspiring. Thanks for putting all the points first! Great video!
The style, the glidecam and the reversed cap. Feels like supertramp! 😂
That glidecam biceps though!
Fantastic video some brilliant ideas and tips thanks for sharing, Greetings from Liverpool England.
Super helpful. Been trying my hand at cinematography for my film projects. Really needed some DSLR camera focus tips.
Hello I'm form Cambodia. thank you so much for making this tutorial. you explain me a lot
Just picked up a 50mm 1.8 lens. Love it for portraits, but wanted to use it for video as well. That was much needed answers on focus. Thank you sir. Subscribed!
AMAZING TUTORIAL, thank you! You look very pumped in the end of the vid ))
thanks
Parker Walbeck....
helped a lot.... cleared few of my scenarios...
Man, that photo focusing technique is very helpful. Didn't think of that.
This helped me out tremendously, especially since I just got the Glidecam
This was a quality vid from beginning to end. Answered all the questions I had about focus.
Parker, great channel. You're own way of presenting. Good tips and tricks
Great tips!
Years ago I imagined there is a distance sensor gadget where it beeps faster if the object move away from focus, so that we can maintain the distance, but still no such gadget. :)
Best video that I have seen and learned a lot...lot of meaning less videos around and I definitely can tell that this is the best
Cheers, always helpful info
Thank you Parker.. I learn from your videos in this channel..
God bless you..
This is so helpful , specially for the people just getting into videography...
Thank you so much for explaining this in such a detailed and interesting way! Exactly what i was hoping for in a tutorial!
this video was extremely informative, the tricks on using DSLR focus were especially cool to know. thanks!
this is one of the best tutorials I've seen. Thank you man!
Step one, hire a focus puller. Done
Also, with fool control, you can wirelessly adjust focus on the weapon. So a focus puller can work with an iPhone if you don't want to bring in a WLCS or stray away from cheap canon glass
Thanks for taking the time to make this. Great stuff.
Great tips. Thorough. Useful. Practical.
