1.6 Ecoboost - Boost Leak Fix and BPV Part Number - 2013 Escape - P0299

- After repairing the high pressure fuel pump on this high mileage 2013 Ford Escape 1.6l Ecoboost, we noticed a slight "shudder" effect when under heavy load/full throttle. Subsequent datalogging showed what appeared to be a boost leak. While we didn't have a check engine light, we could see in the data it was there. If it was worse, it would have triggered a P0299 or Underboost Condition code.
I suspected as a result of the datalog that the Boost Bypass Valve, or BPV, was faulty. However, upon looking for the part for this 1.6l engine Escape, Ford Parts houses only showed it as a part of the ENTIRE turbo assembly - a $700 part. Well, the rest of the turbo was fine...
Now I could find on 2.0l Escapes, the BPV was sold separately, for $60-$70. But the same part number showed as not-compatible with this 1.6l Escape. But it LOOKED the same!
So we got the Escape up in the air, pulled the original BPV off the 1.6l turbo assembly, and started Googling part numbers. We found the part was made by Peirburg in Germany, and the Peirburg part number matched a very close Ford Part Number.
By dissecting that part number, I concluded that this must be the same part. We ordered it, swore to the parts house we wouldn't complain if it didn't fit (they warned us!), and crossed our fingers.
In the end, while Ford will state this part isn't compatible, we believe CJ5Z-9U465-A is a good match, and seems to be working flawlessly on this vehicle. Of course, the manufacturer may not agree, but we show how their own part number system can give us the assurance we were comfortable with the move ahead anyway.
We'll walk through this on this video.
Bear in mind I'm using a part that Ford says doesn't fit this application. It's high mileage, with no warranty, and I chose to take that risk. All I present here is the data I used to decide the risk was acceptable to me (and I believe it to be the same part from that...but Ford won't say it directly)

In all this chat, I totally missed one obvious thing: while I ordered "CJ5Z-9U465-A", the part that came STILL has "CJ5G-9U465-BA" silkscreened on it. So I guess my theories of these two parts being the same is more evident since they printed the one number on a part listed as the other!
I'm an engineer, and these little nuances in CPM and Spares really annoy/interest me! It can be make or break. Really shows how someone who has their hands on the parts can know worlds more than a spreadsheet-jockey with all the drawings and BOM at their disposal.
Now. *Sips coffee*. Time to figure out if this is what's broken on my Escape`.
Hey Vortex Garage. Did the car kinda feel like it was rowing a boat? I believe my 1.6 in my fusion is having the same issue.
Is the 2.0 bpv in same place
@@kingsoljah109 yes
@@PatientZero_ did u ever figure this out? I have 2013 fusion as well sounding like same symptom
Two years!!!!! Two years of taking my 2013 Ford Escape to the dealership for diagnosis of hesitation under hard acceleration. They were never capable of finding the problem due to no check engine light or trouble codes generated. I come across this video, ordered the parts, picked them up, installed them and guess what??? The Escape is now running like brand new!!!!!
Can’t thank you enough for this video!!! You were right. They told me the part wouldn’t fit my 2013 Escape 1.6 but it did perfectly fine, and thanks to that I have a 100% working vehicle again. Thank you thank you THANK YOU!!!!
Is it more like when ur accelerating does it chug like someone is hitting the brakes as u climb speed ?
I have the same problem, hope this part will fix it
@@textor33thats same issue we are having any luck?
Same issue. Any links to these part . I have e the 2.0 eco....
@@SupremeRC Just for the record. I still own this vehicle. Currently sitting at 165k miles and free of turbo issues ever since I replaced those parts. I do not have links to them, but I bought them directly at the dealer. The part numbers are as follows:
CJ5Z 9U465 A
CJ5Z 9K378 B
Thank you! I just purchased a 2013 Escape and began feeling the stumbling. I pulled a data log on the boost, and it looked similar to yours. I went to Ford, and they told me it would need a new turbo. I wasn't buying it. Turbo failure is usually a pretty easy diagnosis just by sound. I found your video and ordered both parts. Of course, Ford said it didn't fit, so I told them I won't be returning it if I'm wrong. Easy change-out, and the car drives great. You, my friend, saved me $2k.
How did you noticed your turbo was working bad?
Thanks for the invite. I noticed from footage that the odometer said 162 k plus miles. Gives us 1.6 owners hope.

Thanks a lot Vortex Garage, I solved my shuddering issue at high speed with this video.
This worked like a charm on my 2016 Ford Escape SE 1.6 FWD.
Ooh mine just started making a whooshing sound not sure if shuttering is the term maybe it is how long was your making this sound. I might need to do the same
Sorry it sounds like a dishwasher swishing around as i accelerate.
@@frajier-boi mine doesn't sound anything, it only vibrates/shudders at high speed, same as in the video, i experience rough acceleration specially when climbing an incline.
@@joswelquiambao hmm maybe be different problems then i’’ still going to try
@@frajier-boi maybe the swooshing sound you're hearing is the turbo whistle, which is normal, specially if you hear it on the front passenger side
Another great fix! Ford should give You the sparepart as You apparently knows more than they do!
Ford and the dealership repair shop knows it, too. They just prefer you spend an arm and leg on their parts and services.
Great video and explanation. I had similar symptoms - shutter on acceleration under load (most evident when going uphill) - but without the P0299 code or noticeable sounds. Same Forscan graphs with the dropouts on boost pressure over 20psi
I replaced the BPV without improvement. Replacing the turbo wastegate solenoid solved the problem.
It seems that either could be the cause so anyone with this issue might consider replacing both units (as he did,) just to save time and effort.
Very solid troubleshooting and sleuth work to get that part. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for posting this video. The attention to detail and video quality is top notch.
I work for a inventory company and travel to many dealerships (fords included) I knew what the last 2 digits were about but always wanted to know what rest before hand means. Now I know. It's just funny how certain parts aren't meant to be replaced unless it's a whole unit. It's obviously the case here regarding to the turbo system.
I bet it took some research time to break it down on finding that certain part you were looking for.
Thanks for making an informative video with good production quality. 👍🏼🙏
thank you very much for sharing, exactly the same thing happened to me and I solved it by buying the part in ford parts anyway they warned me that it was not going to work, that I had to buy the complete turbo ... but it works correctly and I recover the power and fuel efficiency . Thanks a lot
I wish you lived near me. You go the extra mile
@vortexgarage Excellent work tracking down that part. I am wondering how critical this fix is? I have a P0299 code and a trip planed for later this week. Is this a don't drive at all, or don't drive much, or a fix it within a couple months type of repair?
My question exactly! Does anyone know? It just happened today. Thank you.
Car will run and drive, but will lack power and fuel economy may be lower (loss of efficiency).
I’m going through this issue right now. Ford dealer says the turbo bypass valve is discontinued and I’m going through hell trying to find a replacement. I found your thread on a Ford Escape forum and I’m hoping the part I ordered (same number in your thread) fixes my issue 🤞
did it work?
@@jeffh.2588 Yes it did. I ended up ordering a Turbosmart BOV later on though lol
It would be nice to see what the performance was prior to the replacement.
I have a 2013 ford escape ,1.6 engine and it smokes on start up do you think a leak on turbo could be the problem?
You might have oil or coolant leaking onto the exhaust.
My 1.6 escapes turbo is very loud, not in a bad way but it never had this much of a whistle or a “psh” when you let off. Could this be the bpv being broken? I hope you can reply!
Lots of good info. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Just replaced mine yesterday. Made the problem worse, very little boost unless I hammered the gas. Boost barely went over 4.5 PSI with lower RPM. Pulled it off today, damn thing melted. Figure I didn't centralize the inner seat and boost leak was Continuous, resulting it hot compressed air melting the plastic hat (round top with holes).
Be sure that you feel it seat the inner ring before you lock it down.
I replaced the solenoid and the turbo diverter. No noticeable leaks as far as hoses an intercooler. Still sluggish and p0299. Maybe wastegate next?
I would suggest replacing the factory BPV with a Turbosmart full recirculation BPV.
have the same car. any time i rev over 2 to 3 thousand the shudder starts . the turbo produces boost then suddenly drops of repeatedly . I bought the part but the issue is still there any ideas ? Been to ford they want be to buy a whole turbo assembly.
I have the same car but the check engine light is due code P0234 and it means “engine overboost condition”. Any idea on how to approach this fault? Thank you
Yes that is almost always the Wastegate solenoid also called the Turbo Boost solenoid. I've put two on this car so far. I think I cover it a bit in this video but otherwise search Ecoboost p0234 and should be plenty of how tos. ua-cam.com/video/IXxxvkSF-UI/v-deo.html
The part number for this on the 1.6 Ecoboost for this generation is CJ5Z-9K378-B. Always double check fitment before ordering though.
@@VortexGarage Thanks, I’ve watched the other video and it seems doable for me. Hey I just wanted to run this by you and pick your head before I go ahead with the Turbo solenoid... I actually noticed the plastic lid that covers the air filter loose and isn’t bolted down and the air filter is dirty.. I’ve read that this causes engine hesitation which I think I feel it because when I give it gas the engine takes a second to respond. Let me know what are your thoughts on this?
I came here for this same code for overboost instead of under, but still got the info I needed. Thank you! I also wanted to say that I have yet to find a more simplified explanation of this system and I have now considered asking my husband to whisper the meaning behind the different digits of a Ford part number, instead of sweet nothings, in my ear.
@@ubbewithabfc Glad it was helpful!! And LOL about the Ford part numbers 🤣🤣
I Jat tore my wheel off and got the parts for my 2013 2.0 . I don't have a part that even looks similar to your Escape. Where the 3 Allen bolts are I just have a plastic vent nipple that has the solenoid hose running I to it. I'm confused for many reasons. Can u give me some help?
Question! I heard you say this is the part number for a 2.0L 2013 Ecoboost. I'm trying to replace this, as well as the solenoid, on my 2013 escape with the 2.0L. Is this the part that will fit my car? I tried the link and it also shows up as incompatible with my year. Any insight greatly appreciated!
thanks this saved me so much time!
I have the same problem with my 2014 escape 1.6l EcoBoost. Did the same swap you did with the BPV but I’m still having the same problem. The connection and valve have oil all over it I wonder if that might be the issue. What would you do next if changing the BPV didn’t fix the issue?
How did you get the solenoid valve off I’m struggling just on the far right nut 🤷♂️
Was the boost issue throwing a CEL? My 13 fusion has underboost condition, throws the CEL but also seems to put the car into limp-mode
Super cool!
Mine is surging while under load on highways. You can here the turbo kicking in and out. No codes. Would that be the symptoms of what you experienced?
Mine too. Mine wines in and out.
I have the same problem but me car it’s 2015 te part it’s the same ?
What is the waste gate solenoid what is it used for the white part with hoses
My escape is stuttering around 2,000 rpm 30-40 mph. Ford diagnosis said my right side inner & outer tie rods were shot and I needed new ones. They wanted $600, I bought picked up some MOOG parts from Advanced Auto Parts and swapped them myself. It’s riding better but the boost/ power lack type stuttering is still there. I’m not sure if this is my fix or maybe the Turbo Control Solenoid
Have a friend who corrected the issue in his 2013 FE 1.6L by only replacing the Turbocharger Boost Solenoid...
Hi, Did you ever test the wastegate itself?
I have was trying to find the TCBP on my scanner and didn't see it so i ordered the veepeek and forscan and still don't see it. Maybe my 2014 escape 1.6 doesn't show that, any ideas?
What was that turbo tube part number?
Bought a used 2014 escape and have had nothing but problems. Only had it two months and owe 15000 😞 single mom im so upset and pretty much screwed
I feel the same way. I paid 15000 for mine and there's no note, but when you give someone all you have for a vehicle, hoping you won't be spending hundreds on repairs month after month, it certainly is disheartening to have expensive repairs to pay for still. I wish car dealers were required to do more to ensure their cars in working order and won't need repairs right off the lot. Silly little lemons laws don't do anything to help.
Hopefully it's a lesson learned: never ever buy a Ford. Or any turbo charged American made vehicle. Or a Chrysler or Hyundai, Kia...
Honda or Toyota only (I love my VW but I'm a mechanic so I can fix it).
Let me ask, is that part that I need to change then? I have 2014 with eco boost and 1.6l
It has the engine light on and when I scanned it it says P0299.
I don’t see any leaks except from motor mount a lil oil leak there.
For the P0299 you want to locate boost leaks more so than oil leaks. You want to be sure the post-turbo air tubing is all tight - all clamps, fittings, and no leaks in the intercooler. If you are able to data log as we did here with Forscan on a smartphone and you see similar data then it is most likely the BPV. The BPV is a common failure, so chances are it's that, but it's hard to say for sure without having checked other potential boost leak areas.
I’m curious if this fixed the car. Did I miss that statement. I got an escape with the same code but no shudder. Came in for tans issue now it has produced this code and we need to get it fixed. I will pressure test system to verify leak.
Sorry for the slow reply, but yes, this did solve this issue on the car. Your plan sounds solid, test for leaks in the tubing especially if any of that was off for the repair. In our case this one was the BPV and it's been running well for several thousand miles since the repair according to the owner.
I only replaced the boost control valve, and it didn't fix the surging. Guess I'll order the solenoid too now.
Did it work for you?
@@bbmats yes, the solenoid fixed mine.
Are you able to access this from under the car or only from the wheel well
If I recall access from below is tight for accessing the bolts. It may be possible but I don't recall - I found it easier to go through the wheel well at the time. I don't think you have to mess with the wheel liner.
I replaced the valve and it's still making a weak squawking sound and shuddering when under a load so I guess I'm replacing the waste gate solenoid....
Did it fix it ?
My same escape has a whining whistle noise when accelerating and will over heat when climbing hills to the point the engine will force shutdown do you believe this part is the cause?
Did you find the problem? I’m having the same issue
Mine has that loud hissing sound. So swapped the part u showed on video. And it still does the same thing. Any ideas ?
Are all of the turbo pipes, connectors, intercooler, etc. checking out ok? Sounds like a boost leak but definitely have data to correlate would help ensure that's the case. Hissing sounds can also come via vacuum leaks, evap issues, etc., so hard to diagnose from the keyboard but if you think it's similar to what was in this video first thing I'd do is check all the flexible connectors, hose clamps, and pipes on the turbo piping to the intake manifold
I like you first for me thank you.:-)
Help please!!!
Just spent 6 hours doing this and my car won’t go past 45 mph and shakes like crazy, please help
Transmission most likely. What are the symptoms if you still have the escape
Hey so my car triggered a P0299 code and I’m also getting a whistling noise when I’m accelerating, could it possibly be the same problem with the BPV? Or is it something else?
Boost Pressure Control Solenoid.
You can get a used 1 for 150
