This theory is based on an outdated source. I'm happy to accept the argument that chaos can make it hard for adhders to develop or maintain coping skills - but he is treading dangerously close to an outdated and harmful theory. At best, he needs to be much more clear in his choice of words.
Something not mentioned here that is often overlooked is the average age kiddos are exposed to p*rnography and what comes along with that. The common areas only rule with electronics really is the best way to prevent this, but once it happens that’s something to work through with a counselor. It can be addictive, if can cause depression or outbursts and a variety of other things. Him being locked in his room so much is a red flag for that. Obviously this is not a for sure thing but it’s something to explore and make sure it’s not going on and if it’s going on exploring the mental health repercussions of exposure to that.
This mom was very brave to call onto the show and ask her question. She was looking for direct and straightforward advice, and that is what she got. I would not be surprised if more research comes to light showing that trauma contributes to ADHD. Every child I know who has it has been through trauma early in life and/or in the womb. Also, some things that are traumatic to a child are not viewed as trauma by the parents, but it does not mean the child did not experience trauma.
Love this for my 9 year old twins with ADHD. It has been a long journey since they got formally diagnosed at 6 years old. I agree in my circumstances their ADHD was caused by my maternal stress and a divorce I went through when they were 5 (not from their bio dad we split up when they were 2) ... I didn’t know then what I know now, all we can do is move forward, but they are the best kids. I took ownership over my parenting style and have done a lot of work, research and change to my approach. It’s still a work in progress but you are absolutely right a secure attachment and connection is the key to shepherding successful ADHD children and later adults. I’m happy I saw this, because I do still revoke privileges as punishment. I feel like this helped me know to make some more changes before my kids hit those teen years! I am taking them for breakfast separately this week. Thank you.
As someone with adhd I just wish this mum would care about his well being and especially checking in with him as much as she cares about his grades. Chances are it’s not that he doesn’t care but he just can’t do any better and has given up..
It’s actually not good for adhd impaired individuals to constantly excuse their behavior. That just makes them more disabled. Immediate consequences are the way to go.
I get unmotivated when I don’t have human interaction, when I feel my best which is most often on a close to paleo and smart sleep routine, and when I use my phone, information, and entertainment as a coping mechanism for loneliness and being tired
Lovev's life true love Never die I know a great and powerful healer that can get back your ex or crua without delay Just forever within 48hours he helped me too immediately
Positive motivation is better than negative motivation. Taking away stuff from our ADHD son doesn't work sometimes. Him having to earn and having him being accountable with school work and behavior every day with a positive reward. Also, limited digital content for ADHD is important.

@@MsRuthie I thought they have come up with different types of teaching for ADHD or different types of Learners visual verbal etc? I know some colleges and I thought schools had to provide learning assisting for tests and whatnot like special rules for ADHD.. I know they had none of this when I was young
The CDC and Web MD both said that the cause is primarily genetic. Web Md said it hasn’t been shown to have a correlation with childhood stress, parenting styles, etc. I’m all for strengthening those connections with our kids though. They need it! I was too harsh with my child before I realized they had ADHD. We had a good relationship overall, but I expected too much. That was stressful for him. I have apologized. Things are better, but he still has ADHD. I feel like dr. John is saying I’m to blame for his ADHD. Personally that thought is unbearable and makes me cry.
Guy is correct, no gene has ever been found or lack of gene. He mentions dr. Gabor Mate (himself adhd and 2 kids adhd) huge clinical studies with families back up that we(adhd) are not born with some disorder etc. We are passed along sensitvity..which is so much evidident in autism adhd. Baby Boys are more sensitive to environment...obviously parents will be defensive as if their stresses were not that bad..but yeah, not unless someone is super sensitivity. Theres no blame game there just awareness that our sorely lacking medical system keeps pushing outdated ideas which are damaging. Me adhd autism for sure as we age Stress , any Stress has big impact..impedes dopamine creation fir one. Best part is this lad had maleffects of amphetamines likely the meds and mom and dad on board to not do thise. A wonderful maleffect is heart solmentd or death..why they have black box warning. Highly addictivr, get similar help from cocaine. One thing that is rarely mentioned is diet. Food dyes can spin especially young. Chemicals in foods. Maybe at 6 months without i will have some fastfood and i get ill right off and kicks up adhd symptoms. All ages adhd need higher daily mg of Omega 3 supplement (quality) proven helps adhd. Now hes 17 likely needs to supplement also with l-tyrosine, again does help..works miracles for me. Mom obviously loves her son so glad she found this guy gave some real life straight forward advice. Problem isnt parents or any adhd problem is our medical system. When you go with gut whom u check out our best support and education is online.
I disagree. My son was born with ADHD. My husband and I are still together. No trauma. He's just incredibly distracted and hyper. Thankfully, he is very successful as an adult. His son has the same disorder.
I disagree 1 million times over as well. So many studies out there showing ADHD is heavily genetic, which is the case for my girl. No chaos in her world. Her Dad and I have been married for over 25 years. We are not a yelling, chaotic household at all. We suspected something going on as early as 3-4 years old. I completely agree with you.
Same for my husband and I. Never going back to a diet with a significant amount of carbs. CBD has worked wonders for us both as well, especially my husband.
I have adhd and grew up with awsome loving parents. I think adhd is genetic, as my mom while never diagnosed but we share we have alot of the same symptoms of adhd. Also my auntie
Is there not a real psychologist she can go to? I know John is a Ph.D., but he's a radio personality. This kid needs someone who knows him, can watch his interactions, and understand what is happening. No radio personality can in good conscience offer advice on a disease that has such a wide-spanning manifestation that diagnoses can't be conducted in a 27-minute consult.

I read an article on PubMed they're using LDN low dose naltrexone to help ADHD and depression ,autism many other things ( cools down the immune system, cytokins and helps to prevent cancer too. 30-day supply of 4mg is around 30 at a compounding pharmacy. This has also done wonders for my immune system and my mood. Just an FYI
He keeps saying that adhd be a natural response to chaos and he has GOT to stop that.
100%
It’s exaggerated by natural responses to chaos*

Don't threaten. He punishes himself enough. Believe me.

A very stressful pregnancy does affect the child, too.

My family was amazing and grew up in a great household and I still have ADHD...
I have four boys. The middle two, who are twin boys, have ADHD. When we treated them, they did almost a 100% turn around.
You should read the book scattered by Gabor Mate. Chaotic childhood isn’t the only prerequisite nor is it required.
Trauma changes the brain, but it isn't the ONLY thing that can have that affect.

What about the cases of ADHD that does not stem from maternal stress and chaotic households?
Exactly, it is not even accepted that it's due to trauma. It's complex and highly genetic.
I have ADD not the H part. I like "Remember to remember". Good advice on this call.

My 9-yr-old has this. Not hyper, just very imaginative and distracted, and it causes trouble in school.

You aren't. It's 100% genetic. Either you or your husband have it. I'm not guessing.

One of you have add.
It’s just an adaptation that doesn’t fit into a linear society
Look into a ketogenic way of eating. It helped my husband greatly!
Yes! Cutting out refined sugar has been a game changer for me. I did keto a few years ago and that's prob the time my brain was working the best!

No, a 27-minute consult isn't long enough. That's why a book regarding ADD/ADHD was recommended.
I dont like Gabor Mate. At least what ive seen him portray in youtube. Ill check the book out but have super low expectations.
adhd is so frustating
Even more so for the families and friends of the adhd individuals.
I'm hoping this can help me... Just got diagnosed.
This made little sense
Unsubscribed. Guy just disregards empirical evidence and then offers advice. Shameful
This guy thinks adhd is a behavioural problem caused by situational events
John has ADD?
