Blurb:
In the The Dead South’s version of Chop Suey music video, we wanted to take elements of their live show and piece it together in an interesting way. Taking inspiration from System of a Down‘s video, we used blending layers and different motion graphics to give the illusion the band was morphing into one another. We took that inspiration with our version to the extreme by incorporating things like VHS film emulation and film scratches sampled from actual vintage film stock. Combining green screen footage of the band playing live, footage from the Mile Zero Fest in Key West Florida and concert clips from all over the world on tour, this video is a static mess of beauty, excitement and energy.

I've heqrd it said that metal and bluegrass have more in common than initially meets the eye: emphasis on fast & technical playing on instruments. Also, they have metalhead roots.

It's definitely not what I expected. I think it's just the original song played with different instruments, but otherwise entirely unchanged. Like putting the song into a program and changing all the instruments into bluegrass ones.
Considering the original song is so heavy on the drums and this has no drums and they are completely different genres, you wouldn't expect it to work as well as it does, absolute geniuses! Each member is so incredibly talented and you can see they have so much fun making music.

@@NapaValleyVegan oh my pleasure. Both are among my favourite bands. The original came out in 2001 I think? I was in primary school but always loved system of a down. They are incredibly talented just as TDS are. I love their film clips too.

Check out a band called The Native Howl, they have a rendition of Harvester of Sorrow mixed with Man of Constant Sorrow. Incredible band.

Got tickets to the Seattle show back in December that was delayed until July. I lived in the Ozarks for many years and learned to love outlaw country music and bluegrass. Never thought some Canadians would be making music for broken bastards and sinners that gives me goosebumps. Keep up the good work. Can't get enough of it.

I had tickets to that show as well (well now I have July tickets) but I also lived in the Ozarks until 2009 before moving here.

Yeah man, I remember hearing this song about a couple decades ago for the first time on a college pirate radio station (pre Napster, when that was a thing, yep showing my age 😅) and became a SOAD fan immediately, this is such a good cover!

One thing I love about Dead South, is their devotion to their look. I love that it has hardly changed at all since the beginning. Cool song too!

Hearing this cover makes me feel a lot of emotions that I don’t know quite how to describe yet.
I felt the same way, I really don't know what I was feeling. Watching the what the video was done, gave me a feeling of familiarity and nostalgia, but I'm not from that era. That's the only way i can explain it. I felt like i was feeling another life.

it makes me sick, my body gets the familiarity from the original, but it doesnt have the emotion the original song carries, especially during the high moments of the song, my body tenses up getting ready for those powerful shouts and screams, but they dont come so I'm left with this almost panic-like feeling that leaves me nauseous, and its like that the entire song, not that the cover is inherently bad, if someone said "hey lets make heavy metal into blue grass" this is what I'd think of. and they did it well in terms of changing the genre of the song, but I still feel it lacks that "raw intensity" that cuts through you the way the original does. and it leaves youexpecting those Highs but doesnt deliver, thats atleast how Id describe this feeling

I'm actually genuinely surprised they stuck to the same cadence and even vocals for this song. I was hoping for a little bit more Dead South unique approach (besides the banjo, of course). Don't get me wrong, this was awesome! Really enjoyed it! You guys rock!

I am actually surprised and very satisfied the vocals are in the style of the original. If you were there back in the day, Chop Suey came out of nowhere from a sub genre no mainstream listener cared about. But we all loved Chop Suey and many more by SOAD. This cover blends two styles really well ❤

Honestly, the first couple times I listened, I was in chaos and was skeptical I would like it, so I understand some people not digging it early on. BUT, as with some great songs, it grows on you and becomes your favorate song. Some songs that are simple and provide a hook, don't last and grow old quickly. This is one that once it grows, it hooks you for the long haul.
For any new fans just finding The Dead South, you have just struck gold.
As a metalhead and SOAD fan, this is an outstanding rendition. Bravo fellas, well done.
