The only thing that saved him from killing someone on most of those elbows is the pads were foam and completely different than the hard plastic stones they all have on now. Accidental elbows do more damage now as a result. If Mess had today's equipment on for a lot of these, he'd legit have killed someone. Great player, nonetheless - can't deny that.

    • @prun8893

@@Arifraser373 Yes. Ovechkin is what's called a "shooter". He has very little game other than having a wicked shot. Brett Hull was the same.
Shooters score a lot of goals by finding some open ice and waiting for a pass. They have fewer assists than goals. They contribute nothing on the defensive end and, therefore, don't have a great plus-minus considering how many goals they score. They contribute almost as many goals for the other team as they do for their own.
Shooters are very good on the power play.....you put them on their off-hand and they can wait for a one-timer.
Shooters are a liability at even strength; that is, hopefully, made up for by their propensity to score.
Shooters can be shut down during the playoffs simply by close checking because they are one dimensional.
      Ovechkin 822 career goals.........plus 67? 663 assists?
      Brett Hull 741 goals........plus 23? 650 assists?
These guys were so bad in the neutral and defensive zones that they had to be moved from center to wing. Wingers have fewer defensive responsibilities than centers.
Mark Messier was a complete player. He scored, he assisted, he checked, he elbowed, he played on the power play, he played on the penalty kill.
Notice you don't see Ovechkin on the ice very much when the Capitals are up by a goal with 2 minutes to play.
      Mark Messier.....694 goals........plus 211......1193 assists.
Mark Messier is substantially "better" than Ovechkin. Ovechkin is substantially "better" than Brett Hull, though.
If you want to talk about Russians......Pavel Datsyuk and Sergei Federov were both better than Ovechkin.
Ovechkin is a shooter and nothing else.
