Lots of these archives were just recorded on low quality VHS, and then rendered with bad quality converters on a computer, then uploaded in a terrible quality in early youtube which was in 360p. The real archives from the TV stations are looking pretty good if the team had enough budget to get it filmed with quality cameras and skilled technicians.

@@alfonseklyne9027 Stevens played the game hard and within the rules of his era. He had zero suspensions for hits. And you see him fight a much MUCH bigger Lindros in this very video several times. Stevens had well over 100 career fights. @@TheRealKingKevin Crosby's had a few concussions over the years, and the biggest difference was, back in the 90s enforcers were still a thing, if you hit a star player.. you'd get the shit beat out of you. Not anymore, that's part of the reason we see more concussions now a days, no enforcers to actually police the players. Even Wayne Gretzky said this exact same thing, he didn't get hit much because he was very well protected. When he went to LA he wanted Marty McSorley as well with his trade. The enforcers need to come back. Crosby has nobody to protect him from getting hit in the head, and he still gets up and plays and plays well.

@Puckman637 Stevens was better in that era than Lindros? In what aspect? In the couple of times when they dropped the gloves in this video, who looked like they usually got the better of who? You've got one player who is scoring goals and the other is trying to take them out heading into the boards after the puck is already in the back of the net. That just comes off as jealous or bitter or a cheapshot artist. If someone is trying to be an agitator and get him off his game, being 6'4", do you think the team is going to send a goon after them, he had to fight his own battles. He wasn't someone who was just going to skate around headbutting random people either, everybody wanted to poke the bear. Also in that "era" between the 2, one of them hovered around 4th all time in points per game and the other not so much, i'll give you 2 guesses who and the first one doesn't count.

To me Scott Stevens is the best physical defensemen that I have ever seen. Sorry - he was not dirty to me at all. If your head was down crossing the blue line in a playoff game against the devils you needed to make sure where Scott was when you went over the blue line. Though not in this video (thanks for posting) Stevens did try to take advantage of Lindros with a few extra shoves. Unfortunately that hit was so devastating that concussions just started coming more frequently to Lindros following this first big blow. Stevens finished off prob the biggest and toughest and one of the best players in NHL history. I don’t even like Lindros but he came in dominate to the nhl. In all these cases, Stevens' intent was to injure, absolutely no respect for his fellow athlete. I get the game is tough and there may be blood but I'm glad this shit is less common now.

Scott Stevens though ended Lindros's career with the hits he gave him skating with your head down & taking 4 defenders on in the zone by himself. Now if Lindros had done that to Stevens his head would detach. If it was todays game Lindros would be playing for straight 3 decades.

@ag4allgood I totally agree. Bobby Clarke was old school. And Flyers medical team kept clearing him to play. But what I noticed about this video. Almost every hit Lindros gave Stevens it was clean. And he won every single fist fight. Every hit Stevens did was dirty or when Lindros was making a move with head down. In todays game Steven don't make it 2 seasons without being banned. He always altered his body to hit the head. Lindros hit you in your core and still demolished you. Not to mention Lindros could fly man.

Flyers fan here. As dirty as a player that Scott Sevens was (and he's in my top 5...Bob Clarke is #1)...he usually backed-up his actions with his fists, something Clarke never did Just got that elbow up a tad too high for me sometimes.

Stevens, one of the best defenseman to play the game. But he always looks so outmatched in these fights. But I am a bit biased, being a Wings fan I was able to watch the two best in the game.

To all the people calling this a dirty blind side hit…first off all the only blind side hit one can make is one from behind. You dont hold back a hit if the guy doesn’t have his head on a swivel. This is not tennis, children.
No.1 rule when kids begin playing contact hockey--keep the head up, and keep it on a swivel. If you watch an NHL game more closely, you can see the players rapidly swiveling their heads back and forth to keep their situational awareness on point.
Using the strong side D as a screen for the weak side D to cross over for a-hopefully-unsuspected hit is a basic tactic that we see all over the place. Anytime you can legally hit a player even though he doesn’t see it coming is not a dirty thing….ITS THE THING YOU WANT TO DO MOST! I say again, this is not tennis.
If a player who is taller than everyone else like Lindros decides to cut to the middle, turning downhill, meaning his leg joints all flex, which is what you do in order to explode out of your turn, and this necessarily lowers the level of the head, it would be hard at the speed of the game for a D man who’s timing shoulder to chest contact to stop and hold back at that point. Remember it’s easy to make false judgements when you get to watch over and over again in slow motion. But at the speed of things in game, the human mind just can’t get the body to act that fast.
What Im saying is that I dont think Steven’s was thinking head hit right from the start. Now does that mean that he wasn’t ok with making head contact when it occurred? Possibly not. But we can’t call this an intentional head shot because Steven’s would have had to begin his run at Lindros at a moment when his head was not that low. His head lowers as he turns.
But to place some of the onus on Lindros, I mean he is turning downhill with the puck into a pocket of three Jersey players. I mean common. You have to have better awareness than that. You can never count on opposing players to protect you. You have to learn the skills to protect yourself. Lindros obviously does have those skills, but just used them in effectively in this particular scenario.
Look how the idiot Steve Moore who literally ran into Markus Naslunds head. NO penalty called, as Naslund had - again - lowered his head level at the worst moment.
