Ayutthaya was conquered by the Burmese twice. The first time, the great Burmese King Bureng-nong did not destroy the capital but appointed a new king to rule Ayutthaya as a vassal state. His son who was kept as hostage for many years in Burma before allowing back and later became king and declared independence. The Burmese troops again came to subjugate Ayutthaya but King Naresuan killed the Burmese Prince in a personal combat on elephant's back, thus really revived Ayutthaya to become even stronger than before. On the second Burmese invasion, Ayutthaya fell due to internal weakness and the Burmese no longer cared to appoint a new ruler, deciding to burn Ayutthaya down completely so as not to rise again to rival Burma. A few Burmese regiments were also stationed in the old capital to make sure that Siam would not revive. However, within one year, former feudal lord of Tak city, raised troops from Chanthaburi and rowed boats up along Chao Phraya river to Ayutthaya and drove the Burmese troops away. He declared himself as king commonly known as King Taksin and moved the capital to Thonburi. The Thonburi palace where King Taksin resided is now Thai Navy's headquarters and nearby there is the famous Temple of Dawn, Wat Arun, with a huge stupa. Thonburi was the capital for only 15 years old before King Taksin was taken captive and killed. The coup leader declared himself a new king known as King Rama I and moved the capital across the Chao Phraya river to Bangkok. You two have visited the Grand Palace, which is several times more resplendent than Thonburi palace.
We feel we learn a lot from your posts, so thank you. It's very impressive and shocking that kings used to personally take part in combat atop elephants. It's admirable how strong Siam's spirit was in the face of Burma's attacks. Wat Arun was very beautiful, we had no idea we were in the area of the old capital when we went.
After the fall of Ayutthaya for the second time, King Taksin the Great, one of Ayutthaya's generals, returned to liberate Ayutthaya city from the Burmese army within seven months.
@@อาลีลัดอิ่มเอม Thanks. My memory was vague. Now I remembered that he left Ayutthaya before it fell and retreated East and then raided Chanthaburi (do or die trying) in one battle and succeeded.
