Just bought the enduro after a demo and my focus is climbing. I weigh 195 and the 36 absorbed the hits so much better than the ibis ripley with a 34. was absolutely shocked. The sections of rocky fast terrain and big bumps are magic with the 36. No brainer for 1 pound delta we weighed them both on a scale. This channel is freaking awesome.
How much does that TRail 429 Enduro weigh in at? I just demoed one last weekend and loved it's potential. I currently have a GG Smash and it's pretty heavy.
Just sold my V4 Ripley XL (thanks to Jason for helping me find that!) and demoed the T429 Enduro. Despite being 6'1 with long arms and legs the T429 L is a better fit and more comfortable for me. The Pivot climbs as well, if not better, and has it all over the Ripley on descents. Have another brand to demo but think I'll be getting the T429.

Good talk, Jason. Interesting comments on tires. I run Vitoria Agarro rear with a Mazza out front on my Devinci Django 29. It is faster combo than the Maxxis DH combo without a loss of support and I highly recommend it. Nothing brakes harder than DHR II, but I don’t want to drag it around when I’m earning my turns. I run a Dissector on the back of my Ripmo v1 and I like it better than the Aggressor, but I agree that tires make a bigger deal than almost anything else. I think most of us are over-tired as well as over-biked. Keep up the good work.
I just pulled a DHF / Aggressor off my 2020 django after 350 miles to try a DHR II / Rekon. Much faster rolling and suits my desert terrain well. Interesting that the Django doesn't get brought up much in comparisons.

My shop is a Pivot dealer and I even purchased the switchblade al for the lower pricepoint. I've asked Pivot reps why they dropped the aluminum model and they claim that they really didn't sell. It's good on paper but it seems people end up shelling out for the carbon upgrade or just buy a different aluminum bike for even less. Basically it just doesn't make sense to spend $4-5k on an aluminum bike.
Jason, Thanks for all the work you do. Greatly appreciated as I got ready to plop down the money for a new bike. I was ready to plop down the money on the Ripley and was was going to put a 140 up front. When you dropped the T429 video, I managed to get my hands on one to demo. I didn't go the Enduro build route but keeping the Fox 34 with 140 travel legs. Salt Cycles is a great shop, they treat me great!
Hey Jason, thanks for all your videos over the years! I just brought Pivot 429 home today and watched this 429 Q&A session again just for kicks. Your review of the 429 and so many other bikes was definitely a factor in the bike choice and the spec. Notably, I swapped out the Fox fork for a Pike, recalling that you felt the best configuration for the Tallboy. So I figured the 429 might be better with the Pike as well (plus, the silver Pike looks so cool with the silver 429 frame!). I also opted for the DPX2 shock for a touch more plushness. Anyhow, keep up the reviews... such a great channel for mountain biking!
I truly LOVE my Trail 429 and will ride it for years, but the super boost is an issue. I took the super light $2600 carbon boost wheels that came with my prior bike (because I would NEVER pay that much for wheels if it didn't already come with the bike) and converted it to a super boost to put on the new bike and it was a pain in the ass. First, unless you know how to space the chainring, brakes, adjust the derailleur, and readjust the spokes to retrue it to account for the new spacing, you will have to pay someone to do it for you. Second, you can't just take the new super boost wheels and put them on your old bike to sell it. You have to buy a second set of wheels to put on the old bike to resell it, so now you're out hundreds of dollars on a new set of wheels too and stuck with the brand new super boost 1700 aluminum wheels that won't fit on any other bike. But even with that hassle, I would take it over the Ripley ANY day because I don't like twitchy bikes.

On the Trail Enduro topic- I agree with yumyum. It's about weight. If you're outriding a 34 fork then you need the next level up in travel. The 36 feels plusher but I rode a lot on a 34 everywhere and it's plenty adequate and fun. And I'm a 180+lb rider.
@MTB yumyum I'm watching the vital mtb ripley review last year. They made the comment it's a bike you get on not one you became part of. Do you feel that's a fair statement? I'm really going back and forth between the ripley and the t429. I'm 5'8 and 140 give or take.
Great video as always! Tire comment here. I have a rekon on the back of my trail bike now and for most green/blue mellow trails they are OK but I find the braking and climbing traction lacking in steep and rough stuff. I'm about to try an aggressor next.
Aggressor is a fan favorite. Never tried it but would highly recommend the Dissector. It comes standard now on the Pivot Trail 429. It's a fast rolling DH tire so it's meant to go fast with enough grip to keep you ripping.
Exactly why I didn't opt for the switchblade over the Rascal. Hub spacing, I was planning on keeping a set of wheels for my next bike but I did end up selling the wheels anyways, but that was a huge factor in the first place. I like to find the best deal on used gear I can and superboost just doesn't have a lot of options used just yet
@@mtbyumyum I sold a scott spark and mach 6 to build my new rascal. I've seen a few up here in Bellingham, home of transition and evil bikes, and people are liking the Rascal a lot. If you ever feel like making a trip up here to ride some terrain opposite of what you have im happy to host you. Shameful plug, I've been in a few of Daily mtb rider videos. Haha
Another GREAT **Live** Q&A! Thank you for all the intel!!! On tires, I agree w you 100%, the DHF/DHR are a great combo but feels like I'm dragging a resistance sandbag when rolling. You recommended the Ardent Race in the back and Rekon in the front. I'm a lot beefier than 140lbs, w a ride weight closer to 190lbs. How do you like that setup for the heavier riders? Also, how did you like the Dissector ....maybe as a front? Thanks again!
I think you'll love the Rekon/AR combo! Dissector can sometimes feel a bit unpredictable... but I've got hundreds of miles with it up front and rekon out back... gl!
I hate high rolling resistance tires. I've tried a fair amount of tires myself and my top favorite trail tires for balanced timing and grip are the Dissector 2.6 and WTB Trail boss. Give em a try
Great livestream, you're doing a great job reviewing all these bikes. I'm looking for my next bike. Any chance you could do a review on a Intense Primer 29.
I have the v2 trail 429 and really like it. I have tried many bikes i have a trance 2 27.5 great bike. The 429 is the best bike i ridden. Solid very solid and stiff and it just feels right. Ive ridden specialized, trek and giant. It would be hard for me to not ride a pivot think they hooked me for life idk. And i really like the superboost rear. I have a feeling more companies will use superboost it is better, more stiff solid feeling.
@@fastfish666 have not tried the new v3 but i cant afford it anyway and im very happy with the v2 it rips, i would up the fork to 140 if u haven't made a big difference and the air shaft is only 60 bucks. I saw the new its sick but im happy with mine fo sure.
Looking at a Tallboy......was unable to find an Instinct. The switch blade and 429 are option. Best "one bike"? Coming off 2016 Thunderbolt MSL Thank you from Grand Junction
Dude, I've been on the new Altitude for some time now.... If you liked the Thunerbolt you'll likely love the new Instinct. Would the IBIS Ripley be the same as the specialized epic EVO. I am a 61 year old big guy and slow. Currently riding a 2005 Ellsworth Moment (26” wheels) and looking to upgrade.
No. The Ripley is more capable and more fun than the Epic evo… the epic evo is more “xc race” oriented and will feel harsh and sketchy in comparison to the ripley. The ripley is also just easier to ride and more forgiving
Im currently riding Yeti 4.5 C , still enjoying the current ride . I was looking to upgrade to the SB115 and now this Trail 429 just came by . Im lost !
Hello from Norway. I had to watch this after the live stream because of the time differences, but it was still a great watch! I guess you have had this question a few times, but when do you think the Revel Ranger video will be out? And one more thing, whats your thoughts on the rumors about an XC bike coming from Ibis?
The Ripley is excellent but the Trance will be lighter weight and might get a slightly better kit for the money on the Trance.... plus, where in the world are you going to find a Ripley AF... pretty sure they're sold out till April 2022 lol
Cheers from Australia.Somehow got lucky and now have the Ripley AF. Previously riding trance 29 and while the Ripley bit heavier it definitely rides lighter. Definitely recommend it over Trance Love ya channel YumYum
I'd watched the Spur review/s and references to the T429 comparison; however, the V3 wasn't out at that time. Would love to hear more about how you compare those two bikes. I own a V2 ripmo and have it built to 30.5 lbs but am 54yrs old and looking for a lighter weight bike to cover more miles on. Live in Summit County Co (Breckenridge) so LOTS of ups on any/every ride. I'll keep the ripmo for lift service (couple per year) and desert tech riding (although the 429 seemed to handle everything st george could throw at it but i'm not at your skill level :)
Honestly, I would build a light weight Ibis Ripley.... It will complement your Ripmo better than the Trail 429 or Spur. It can be built up light weight and is more fun to ride than the T429 or Spur.... only other bike to consider is the Yeti SB115. You should call Chris at Salt Cycles tomorrow and get his opinion including YUMYUM pricing... they build beautiful custom bikes! Chris: 801-943-8502
I love Breck, we mountain bike there every year or so. For the trails there I would get the Trail 429 because it climbs as well as the Ripley (very, very close) and it will be less of a drop off in downhill performance coming off your Ripmo. We are the same age so we can't afford to crash and the better capability & stability over the Ripley is worth more than a slight weight difference. I put lightweight DT Swiss 1200 Spline carbon wheels on mine and its very snappy and responsive with them on.
Hey Yum Yum! Love your channel!! After watching your reviews I honestly quit watching the others. I’m stuck between the Trail 429 and the Ripley, both sound like great bikes. You made a comment about the Ripley suspension having a light trail tune and it works very well for light riders, I’m 180lbs with gear, is that tune going to be too light? I’m an intermediate rider. Also is that light trail tune on the “factory fox” upgrade? Thanks again for all you do!!
Yeah, having never been 180 pounds I can’t tell you exactly what it will be like for you. My guess is, if you’re a newer or intermediate rider, you’ll likely benefit from the lighter tune but I could be wrong. In any case, I think the light tune only comes on the size small and medium bikes from ibis. As far as your decision between the two bikes. I would call Chris at Salt Cycles, tell him I sent you, and see which one he can get to you sooner. I would go with the Ripley myself personally. Give Chris a call 8019438502
So the Ripley has a lite tune for smaller riders or is it a option? How would the Ripley be for a 280 pound Clyde ? What type of suspension would work for a guy my size?
I can't agree more about stiffness and 200+ riders leaning toward 429trail. I'm 225+ (average rider) and I feel the benefit of super boost. However sometimes I wonder if it's so robust I sense flex in the fox 34. Do you see any point riding aggressive trail / xc (not racing but fast) with a lowered pike or 36.
So I know you like the Ripley as your first choice because you are a light guy you say, how about for a 6’1” 170 pound rider? 429 or Ripley or ? Also pedal or crankset strikes better on or less so on trail 429? Thank you.
I was surprised to see the T429 has a 5mm higher bb height than the Ripley in the lower setting. 12mm higher in the higher setting so the T429 will be much better for pedaling clearance.
Extremely helpful videos! Thank You! So, I see a lot of reviews and chat catering to folks that are on the fence about theses short travel bikes and something bigger. I am on the other side and wondering if I need/want something as big as trail 429. What do you say to someone who is in between a “down country” and short trail? I have ridden the sb 115 and really felt it was the sweet spot but I don’t think a yeti is in the cards.
@MTBYUMYUM I'm sorry I missed the live steam, but I'm looking at the Trail 429 vs Spur as my second bike to go with the Ripmo. Was hoping you could comment on a follow few points. Just fyi i'm 6'2" 225 lb if that makes a difference. -Weight seems like the spur some in weighing less -Overall ride characteristics between the two -Value??? looking at the X01 build -SID vs Fox 34 -Any general Insight Thanks for any info.
Between the Spur and T429, I'd go with the Pivot. However, if you plan to keep the Ripmo, maybe consider the idea that you may want to swap wheelsets.... if this is interesting, the Spur would play nice with the boost spacing you already have. Good luck!
Hello, I need one info if is possible. I have to order new Trial 429 from my shop. Im 180cm and 86kg. Few of them tell me to go on medium and some of them to go on large. Please any info for my height? I ride lot uphill.
100% not happening this year.... and even if Ibis does change (I personally don't see it happening anytime soon) this V4 will still be a very very capable get it all done bike. I would have no regret purchasing this year knowing it could change in the summer of 2022... it's still 15 months away minimum.....
@Jason and gang, anybody have experience or knowledge on the size Small of Trail 429 in terms of stiffness, average weight for the Pro XT/XTR build with the DT wheels and any other details specific to the small? I guess I should mention I'm 5'7 and coming from a 2019 Yeti Medium which always felt big and like I'm riding on top of it rather than with the bike
You would do better getting the Medium. This is a new geo bike that rides/fits different than the 2019 old geo bike. I'm 5'6 and the Small Trail 429 was too small. I considered getting a 27.5 wheel bike because of my height to be more maneuverable and to not feel atop of the bike too. But the Trail 429 handles like a smaller sized trail bike and you feel lower in the bike because of the less steeper seat angle and lower stand over height. You could always shorten the handlebar stem too.
Wondering if you upgraded the 429 wheels and other items, bringing it closer to the Ripley in weight & quality - would it then maybe play as well & be as much fun?
I replaced the DT Swiss 1700 Allu wheels that came with the 429 and put on DT Swiss 1200 spline carbon wheels from my prior bike and it noticeably lowered the weight and made it a lot snappier. The caveat is that carbon wheels might make it stiffer so just adjust the rebound to account for it. The two short-travel trail bikes I've owned tended to get redirected more than the higher travel & heavier bikes but they did so a lot less than the flexier Ripley.
I'm done with shelling out $1,000s upon $1,000s. I'm getting a new bike alright, but I'm going with the Aluminum $3500 Ripmo AF and it may not be the *_best_* at anything, but I expect it will at least do *_''everything really well''_* but it's not your recommendation of a Giant Trance, so Jason, which do you believe really is the better ~$3300 aluminum bike?
Hard to say.... the Ripley AF was really awesome. More capable than the Trance but I still think that trance is such a good value.... it's been a minute since I was last on a trance... maybe I need to try one again

Yeah, I think this is a bigger factor for people who own multiple bikes or often swap through frames
I will try! Thank you!
I have a feeling more companies will use superboost it is better, more stiff solid feeling.
yes, same question: I have trail429 V2 also from 2018, awesome bike, is it worth changing for the V3 though?
@@fastfish666 have not tried the new v3 but i cant afford it anyway and im very happy with the v2 it rips, i would up the fork to 140 if u haven't made a big difference and the air shaft is only 60 bucks. I saw the new its sick but im happy with mine fo sure.
Super talk!
The swing weight analogy is very close. If you like light mountain bikes and ski you will probably like DPS Pagoda RP skis!!!
Looking at a Tallboy......was unable to find an Instinct. The switch blade and 429 are option. Best "one bike"? Coming off 2016 Thunderbolt MSL
Thank you
from Grand Junction
Dude, I've been on the new Altitude for some time now.... If you liked the Thunerbolt you'll likely love the new Instinct. It is a very interesting bike to me an the more I look at that black/mint color way, the more I like it!! I need to get a ride on that bike. Call my buddy Mike at Utah Mountain Biking... he has most models in every size in stock... He could ship you one tomorrow and honestly, the bike looks legit. Same frame as my Altitude but likely a little more sporty. Call Mike tomorrow! 801-653-2689
Awesome video. Really informative. Curious on thoughts between 429 and Rascal
Good question. Rascal is more plush and capable down hill
Call Chris at Salt Cycles… he can make you a killer deal on a Ripley right now too! 801-943-8502
Thanks for the input. I will see if I can find a dealer. @@mtbyumyum
I live in Hampton, Va. The closest dealer is about 3 and half hours away from me. I will give that shop a shout out and see what they have.
Thoughts about servicing the Fox Dpx2 piggyback rear shock with nitrogen charge ?
Im currently riding Yeti 4.5 C , still enjoying the current ride . I was looking to upgrade to the SB115 and now this Trail 429 just came by . Im lost !
haha The sb115 will feel more familiar... it is truly the next gen 4.5
Great Vidi thanks for doing it, are you going to post pics of your new Ibis? You hinted that it was in the room w/ you. Did you go black this time?
Yep, went with the black frame this time with blue decals!! Video coming soon!
Hello from Norway. I had to watch this after the live stream because of the time differences, but it was still a great watch! I guess you have had this question a few times, but when do you think the Revel Ranger video will be out? And one more thing, whats your thoughts on the rumors about an XC bike coming from Ibis?
I just need to get the audio fixed on the ranger.... I'm unaware of an xc bike from Ibis.
Thanks for the great livestream! For the budget-minded are you recommending the Giant Trance over the Ripley AF?
@@mtbyumyum Thanks.....already have email exchange going with them. I knew you'd recommend the ripley :) Thanks for the help. Love the channel btw!
Thanks for the quick reply! I really appreciate it! I will give Chris a call today.
So the Ripley has a lite tune for smaller riders or is it a option? How would the Ripley be for a 280 pound Clyde ? What type of suspension would work for a guy my size?
at 280 lbs, go Trail 429 for sure!
Thank you.
I always forget to mention it but, No problem with pedal strikes on either bike... I like the Ripley with a 140mm fork up front too!!
I was surprised to see the T429 has a 5mm higher bb height than the Ripley in the lower setting. 12mm higher in the higher setting so the T429 will be much better for pedaling clearance.
Do you ever ride Park City? Or Roaring fork in Aspen? Those two are listed as Gold locations in the New MB magazine. Juat curious
Great video! Where are you on the new Evil Following v3 vs 429 and Ripley?
I have a test ride on the new Following in 2 weeks!!!
Extremely helpful videos! Thank You!
So,
I see a lot of reviews and chat catering to folks that are on the fence about theses short travel bikes and something bigger. I am on the other side and wondering if I need/want something as big as trail 429. What do you say to someone who is in between a “down country” and short trail? I have ridden the sb 115 and really felt it was the sweet spot but I don’t think a yeti is in the cards.
The Ranger is a killer bike!
-Weight seems like the spur some in weighing less
-Overall ride characteristics between the two
-Value??? looking at the X01 build
-SID vs Fox 34
-Any general Insight
Thanks for any info.
Just to clarify value... seems like the spur X01 build compares vary closely to the PRO X01 build of the Pivot, but the pivot is like $1200 more.
Between the Spur and T429, I'd go with the Pivot. However, if you plan to keep the Ripmo, maybe consider the idea that you may want to swap wheelsets.... if this is interesting, the Spur would play nice with the boost spacing you already have. Good luck!
I have the Trance 29 for $5200 Advanced Pro 1 but it came with carbon wheels and bars. All XT and Performance Elite 34 fork and DPX2
Lot of bike for $5k !!
Hello, I need one info if is possible. I have to order new Trial 429 from my shop. Im 180cm and 86kg. Few of them tell me to go on medium and some of them to go on large. Please any info for my height? I ride lot uphill.
Is there a chance that we are getting ibis ripley V5 next year? Thanks
100% not happening this year.... and even if Ibis does change (I personally don't see it happening anytime soon) this V4 will still be a very very capable get it all done bike. I would have no regret purchasing this year knowing it could change in the summer of 2022... it's still 15 months away minimum.....
Have to be a Dentist to get pivot 429 2022
How did you fix the noisy cable routing?
put some tape around the cable housing where the black plastic piece is.... or use 5mm housing
Thank you.
Have you tried the Onewheel board ? They look fun
Wrong channel, dude.
I'd like to see you try a Niner MCR
Altitude mullet video please.
Filming on the 27th!!
@@mtbyumyum Look forwrd to that video but the IBIS HD5 is the perfect mullet bike!
