    I've been riding a Stumpjumper for the last few months and getting on this Pivot Shadowcat was incredibly eye opening. TRACTION FOR DAYS!! The DW Link suspension system on this Shadowcat is SO GOOD!! Compared with the Single Pivot system on the Stumpjumper I've been riding it doesn't even come close. The stumpjuper is fun in it's own way but it just really reminded me how good Pivot Cycles bikes really are. Hope you guys enjoy this video... it's sort of long... I had a lot of fun riding this bike!! Pivot Shadowcat: bit.ly/3VgHN1f

      Thanks for the comparison to Stumpies, I love my 2014 Stumpy and was about to buy a new one, but this review will make me consider a Pivot bike for sure. I don't like 27.5 s however I prefer 29"s chatted with PIvot and they told me the Shadow is basically a Switchblade (29) done in 27.5 so I guess that will be my target for comparason.

      Nothing wrong with Specialized... it will get you out on the trail and I've enjoyed mine but it can't do what a Pivot (dw link) does. Pivot, Ibis, Yeti and Revel are all on another level in my experience!

      Knowing this bike can go mullet just put it at the top of my list! I ride a ripley af and I am looking for bike with more plush, and the 27.5 intrigues me. I'm not about going faster, I'm about having fun, but I want to be able to try a mixed wheel setup, so I'm going to save up now haha!

    Lots of 27.5's deeply discounted on sale this year. Surprised Pivot came out with one, but very pleased. I hope 27.5 lives on with lots of options and support.

      They have been marketing the hell out of 29er’s in recent years. Sorta created their own problem if 27.5 isn’t moving as much product, yes? Is it different 6 months late to the comments section? 😂

      Because reviewers keep praising and uplifting 29ers and making 27.5 as consolation. 27.5 is way better than 29er im my opinion agile and rollability. Amd reviewer should properly review 27.5 segment not just keep reviewing 29 amd making 27.5 as a consolation 2nd option. It should be treated equally

    Recently bought a Shadowcat after watching this review and, man, it's SO good. Had a Mach 5.5 prior and also have a SB130 LR. Took the Shadowcat out to our early season trails here in Bozeman MT and PR'd nearly everything... climbs and descents from greens to single blacks. Out of saddle sprinting is super efficient. It's incredibly agile, playful and pops to the moon. My friend followed me down a jump trail and said I was popping 3 ft higher than him on his DH/freeride bike. It's definitely not as confident/stable as the Yeti but I think you make up for it to a degree with better control and precision. Less margin for error, though. Better than the Mach 5.5 in every measure and more playful. Bought a 140mm 29er fork to see what the mullet setup is like.

    Sweet bike, the latest Trail 429 made me a fan of Pivot. Never thought 120mm travel would feel plush, or that I'd buy such a short travel bike (usually have ridden 150-180mm). I can easily see a Shadowcat or Mach 6 in my future now.
    I like how you are always articulating the ride feel, getting other's opinions, and comparing to other bikes in a meaningful way. I've definitely have made purchases on your reviews.

    Just demoed this bike along with the 429 Enduro on the 409/409.5 loop in Crested Butte. Technical climbing and descending. Gotta push them right? The Shadowcat for me was by far better all around. Actually climbed over rocky terrain smoother, faster and more efficiently and descended like butter. Incredibly stable but still very agile. Felt the Enduro was clunky in comparison. Merely an opinion but a bike with less travel that's 2 lbs heavier makes no sense to me. 29ers don't necessarily roll better, it just depends more on the terrain, tire choice and your riding style. This is from a 5'10' 150lb. retired slow pro who needs a bike to climb as well as it descends but still handle techy stuff. This bike did it all in spades. Glad Pivot is still committed to keeping bikes at a somewhat reasonable weight.

    As a strong and skilled rider and who already goes plenty fast, I don't need a 29er, nor do I care about making the trail easier. I have two 29ers and three 27.5 bikes. Probably going to get this at some point. I rarely ride my 29ers.

    Long time fan, sorry for subscribing late. I lived in North Salt Lake in 2018 and that’s how I found your videos. I rode your home trail system. Your so lucky to have such great trails in your backyard!
    Reason I’m commenting is I’m bike shopping and I’m very interested in the Shadowcat my local shop is offering a deep discount in an XO1 build. So I’ve been on a 2016 Carbon 27.5 Stumpjumper since 2017. I love my bike, just getting old. I haven’t tried a 29er yet. Probably only gonna get one more bike for the next decade until I go e-bike 😂. Do you think the Shadowcat would make a great replacement or is there another bike I should consider. I ride steep, tight, loose terrain and I still like beating the kids up the hill… I appreciate your time and thoughts. Great videos by the way!

    The surface area in contact with the ground is a function of the pressure in the tire. 18 psi - pounds per square inch. How many pounds are pushing on the tire? Divide by the psi and you have the square inches of the contact patch (modified by a constant for the casing stiffness). 27.5 would have a different shape, longer and thinner, and 29 more short and fat. But this also depends on the tire width, which is why people like the 2.6 on the 27.5. You get a 29er shaped contact patch with a smaller wheel diameter. Thanks for coming to my ted talk.

    I'm on a 2021 Switchblade with these mods. -1° Headset geoadjust, X2 shock, and 27.5 rear wheel and ride in the low setting. The -1° HS made the SB feel more stable downhill, X2 makes it feel more supported and deeper suspension and the 27.5 rear wheel makes it climb on tech trails easier, more traction, more playful and quicker in and out of berms. It doesn't carry speed as well through. Overall, these mods have improved the capabilities of the SB IMO...almost a mini Firebird. With all that said, I would love to mullet a Shadowcat and keep the 160mm fork to slacken it out, shave almost 5 lbs. and see how rides. Thanks for the review!

  • @brianpulscher6514
    @brianpulscher6514 2 роки тому +2

    I'm still on my Mach 5.5 but I agree on the rear suspension. Even before the new vertical shock design, the DW link and Pivot's iteration of it just makes for such a capable bike. I pedal through sections now that I had to build speed and coast with my old bike, because the rear stays so planted. I like the idea of the Shadowcat being much lighter than the 5.5. That said I'll probably go 29'er next time. My brother has a Switchblade, and a less expensive build with cheaper wheels and he just blows me away on the downhills...just coasting. That said I am a fan of the 27.5 because it's more nimble which plays well for our local trails.

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  2 роки тому

      Yeah, there are a lot of good options... If you've never tried a 29er you might be really surprised to see how different they are for you next bike. That said, this Shadowcat would feel pretty different from your 5.5 in my experience.

    • @trentvlak

    Great video! I recall the Mojo 4 vs Ripley comparison and it seemed like the Rip was more effective at most things but the Mojo was more fun. Sounds like a similar scenario with the 429 vs. Cat. Question: any way for you to compare the Mojo 4 to the Shadowcat? As another commenter said, both have 27.5, dw link and similar travel I think. Wondering if there's much difference between them or if they've become very similar like the Ripley and latest 429?

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  2 роки тому +2

      Yeah, great question. I'm unable to do an actual video review but from my experience, the Mojo4 is the more playful and poppy bike. The mojo doesn't feel as deep and damp and the Shadowcat. These bikes are both a lot of fun and as I mentioned in the video, the Shadowcat would likely be ab excellent bike for my wife. She currently rides a mojo4 and loves it but I think the shadowcat could give her even more confidence in more demanding terrain that she would otherwise maybe shy away from on the mojo4. Hope this helps!!

      @kpicha 2 роки тому

      @@mtbyumyum I would agree with this assessment. I was able to demo the Shadowcat and currently own a Mojo4. The Shadowcat has sharper handling characteristics; almost intuitive (reminded me of my Turner XCE) and feels just a little more sprightly and the Mojo 4 feels just a touch more solid. You really couldn't go wrong with either of these bikes. If the Mojo had a little higher stack height, I'd love it even more.

I am 5’6 almost 5’7 with a longer torso, and shorter inseam (30”) demoed a Medium Shadowcat and Small Trail 429 @ the recent Fat Tire Festival and loved them both, but really enjoyed riding the Shadowcat a little more. I am planning to demo/test ride a Medium in the Trail 429 as the front cockpit of that bike in a small felt a little cramped to me. I’m coming from an older Giant Ladies Anthem with 26”

    I have been buying all of your review bikes and I have agreed with al but the Pivots. I am 200lbs so I believe that heavier riders have a different experience on the Pivot version DW Link. I didn't find the switchblade chattery or overly stiff at all just heavy for the category. I know I will get torched for this but I hated the Trail429. It felt like an XC bike w/ better legs. I don't think your wrong I just think that weight totally changes the way Pivot bikes feel. I didn't find the Yeti sb140 stiff at all, in fact I found the rear end of the sb140 and sb130 to be flexy when I would dive into the corners. Once again my weight. Great review Jason I always look forward to your opinions and prospective. On another note, I just built a V2 Evil Offering. 29.82lbs and it pedals NOTICABLY better than the first version. I am still on a new bike high but it is exactly what I wanted my Ripmo to be, and that is saying a ton because I loved that Ripmo. Also cant wait to hear your review on the new Yeti ikes....keep them coming.

      I appreciate your perspective regarding the effect of rider weight on the feel of the bike. I’m 240lbs and have been considering a Trail 429 or a ShadowCat. The new Yetis are also intriguing but the reviews of the Pivots really have me leaning in that direction. I’m hoping more riding will help with my weight loss and maybe the feel of the bike may change…who knows. I’m wondering if the Pivots would feel flexy under me.

      I promise you that switchblade will never feel flexy. I thought that switchblade was almost perfect. It was a little heavy. It was about 2 1/2 pounds heavier than my equivalently priced Ripmo. If you buy a switchblade, you are probably going to love it. I trade bikes about every 3 to 4 months otherwise I would’ve kept the switchblade.

    Ibis HD5 rider now. I like it because it can do TX and AR enduro races and still hang at the bike park in the Rockies. For the enduros that I ride, I wouldn't mind a bit less travel ... like the Shadowcat. But, is the Shadowcat enough bike to handle bike park? Maybe mulleted with a 29er 150 fork to get back a degree or so of HTA? Thoughts?

    • @mtbyumyum

      Yeah, maybe... I think you would need to go 140mm fork for the mullet to keep similar geo.

      @MTB yumyum I guess I'm concerned with the Shadowcat geo. Coming from 64* to 66*, I'm thinking overforking will put it around 65. Maybe that kills what makes it special, though.

      I’m thinking of mulleting this bike for sure. 150 fork almost keeps geo the same but will slacken head angle by a degree and raise bb height by about 8mm. Both are advantageous imo. I hate peddle strikes and 65 deg head angle is the goldilocks. I currently have a mach 6 in mullet and its superb!

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah, for 140mm you would think they might have gone with the Fox Float X shock... maybe they were going for lighter weight and more of a lively jib type feel for this bike. That said, the DPS on this bike is shockingly good!! For our trails and the sustained 8-11 minute down hill sections he never felt like it was fading out or getting too hot and over worked. I used to feel that on my Santa Cruz 5010 but the current Fox DPS is much better that it was back in 2015 when I had that bike.

    Nice review! Did you find you had more pedal strikes with the Shadowcat? I ride an XS Trail 429, and demoed the Shadowcat a couple months ago. Maybe I just got so used to the 29er that the Shadowcat just didn’t feel right to me - harder to get over obstacles and more pedal strikes. Oh, and by the way, I’m only 4’10”, and absolutely LOVE Pivot for the lower standover. I prefer the feel of Ibis bikes but man, every time I get on a Pivot I just gush over how good they are. It's amazing to feel the difference of the DW Link on Pivot bikes. As good as Santa Cruz VPP, Revels CBF and Evils Delta link on the down hill but much better on the climb and support through the entire stroke of the shock. It's insane.

    Thank you for the video and your comment comparing your Stumpy with this bike. I got my mind set on the Stumpy (like yours) but now Idk. Lol I am currently rocking the Ripley AF at 27.2 lbs with Berd Hawk 27 wheels. That bike is so, so good with those wheels on! Like having extra 10mm of travel. Climbing traction and damped feel is top notch! My question is, now that you have been on that Stumpy for few months now and you had couple of Ripleys for 3 years. Which one would you choose to keep if you have both?

      I'm on a Ripley AF and was looking at Berd wheels as well! But after seeing this review I think I might save that money for a Shadowcat. My hardtail was 27.5 and just fine on my trails. I was also considering the stumpjumper before watching this review, but wasn't sure if the extra 10mm of travel would be worth it over my ripley...either I get a Berd wheelset for my Ripley and step up my fork to 140 travel or save that money for a new bike...decisions, decisions.

      Your Ripley AF sounds awesome. I love my Salt Cycles wheels with the birds spokes. They’re amazing! As far as the stumpjumper versus Ripley. It’s a tough choice. The stump jumper is overall the perfect package. If I could only own one bike it would be that bike the problem is, it’s a single pivot bike with flexy seat stays. It just doesn’t do what the Ripley does in terms of climbing traction and overall feel. Same can be said about the new yeti SB 120. It just feels better than the stump jumper. I love how lightweight the stump jumper is though and it feels incredibly zippy. If I could keep the bike from bottoming out without having to add so much air pressure it would be the Goldilocks bike. Good luck

    Just a few observations, I think Pívot has done a great job at offering bikes where you can chose wheel size or mullet (rather than forcing you to go mullet like Santa Cruz in the 5010). Just one small gripe, I wish they specd a Grip2 on the 36 and offered a version with a Pivot tuned X2 or Float X (enduro version) like the trail 429.
