Cats are the great hiders of disease and so it can be much harder to spot when they have a problem. Arthritis is no different. Cats tend to adapt their behavior much better and as a result you may only notice signs of a problem when things are much more advanced. Or if you know what signs and symptoms to look for!
My top symptoms of arthritis and signs of pain are:
- Limping in severe pain
- Trouble climbing and jumping
- Reduced grooming and matted fur
- Sleeping all the time
- Stop playing and inactivity
- Stop using litter tray
- Become reclusive
- Change in personality and behavior
If you notice any of them make sure you get your cat checked out by your vet. Your cat deserves to be pain free in their old age so let them have the quality of life they deserve.
What signs have you noticed in your cat that makes you think they have arthritis? I'd love to read them in the comments below.

You explained that very well and in a calm narrative voice. Thank you. My poor beast has all those symptoms.
I hope you can get them the help they need. I have a free arthritis course here ourpetshealth.com/arthritisminicourse
Our cat one day just didn’t walk, laid down and didn’t want to walk and just slept. When we brought him to the vet, we thought he was dying, he did walk with a limp and had a hard time jumping on his food and drink table. We never realized he had arthritis. Our vet offered solensia within two weeks he was like he used to be when he was younger. Some cats it takes longer to work. He’s had one shot a month. Best thing ever.
Great video that helps me understand this better :-). Thank you.
pleased to hear it, thanks!
so how do I help her
I've got a free arthritis mini-course here - ourpetshealth.com/arthritisminicourse
I picked up an extremely low THC, human grade CBD - about $100 cheaper than pet specific but the exact same thing. I give my 15 yr old cat 50 mg in the morning and bam! He's a kitten again about 15 min later
My cat has some of these symthoms so we placed her food bowl a little higher so she wont have to bend down as much to reach it, and gave her a heating pad to sleep on and is already doing better, ty :)
Great job, pleased I could help a little
My cat has all the symptoms thank you for telling the signs.
I hope you can get them comfortable
dont do research on you tube...go to a vet!
My cat was walking funny and her ilium bone was sticking out of her back on the left side of her sacrum(popped up over night). She was also going back and forth to the litter box and straining to poop with no results. Sometimes she would vomit while straining.
I asked my vet what was sticking out of her back and he knocked on it like a door and said it felt like bone but it was not bothering her so no need to worry about it.
He said she had a GI infection but she was in great health because she was purring.
She had a broken pelvis 6 years before this. She was never able to jump over 18” after the surgery.
I was back with the same symptoms 2 weeks later and he thought it was a canker sore causing her symptoms so he cut it off.
That didnt help and I was back 2 weeks later again. Then he started treating her symptoms with only 40mg depomedrol injections, eventually every 2 weeks. It did make her eat more, but she started vomiting a lot more, especially when trying to poop.
She developed a bout of diarrhea after being constipated for 5 months. It wasn’t a lot of diarrhea but it stunk really bad. He told to me to feed her foods higher in protein like tuna, and if it wasn’t better in 4 days then I could give her OTC Kaopectate at 4ml every 6 hours.
I quit feeding her cheese because I thought that might be causing her constipation. My vet told me that cheese was healthy for cats.
Then when she had been 4 days without eating or drinking, she had yellow ears and pale gums, and was probably 10% dehydrated(her eyes were sunk and you had to push her skin back in place after tenting), he said we could probably get another 2 weeks out of her with another 40mg depomedrol injection. Seems like fluids would have helped when he gave her that injection, but they don’t use them.
Our cat has a few of the symptoms you mentioned but don’t the money a Vet would charge so what can we do to help him he’s 15yrs old
Overgrooming is an indicator of pain in my rxperience.y current kitty eas doing this and an x ray revealed arthritis in the areas he was overgrooming....
Thank you for these signs! My cat has most of these symptoms except she isn’t really grumpy or annoyed when we pet her.
I hope you’re able to make her more comfortable very soon
my veterinarian give me phen-pred. any guide on these ?
My cat is 12 years old and suffers from arthritis. The vet recommended I give her Cosequin, which is a supplement that contains glucosamine and chondroitin. I just add it to her food. It really seems to help.
I know it's an old comment, but how long did it take for the glucosamine to start working ?
Thank you, this was very useful. My cat - two months from 20 - has changed a lot in the past 6 weeks but of course, with lockdown, vets are only seeing emergencies. I put most of these changed down to age, possibly with death near - but he has retained a good appetite and weight (not over weight). Only last night it occurred to me he might have arthritis, especially as he can be 'up and down'. I have arthritis myself and know some days are pain free and others are awful.
He must have been well cared for to be that grand age. I hope he's with you for a while yet
I've recently just took my cat to the vets, as she is suffering from this I think. I couldn't go into the vets surgery but they still took her as an appointment. You should try again
@@joannasams1963 This is going to sound crazy but is it possible that cats are catching COVID from humans? And vice versa?
@@MK-ih6wp not everything is Covid related, cats get old, and struggle like we all did before Covid. My cat passed away in February it was something to do with her brain, I initially thought it was arthritis
@@MK-ih6wp NO
My cat Chunk. We got him from cats protection. I think he has Arthur as we had to put back board on low tray as he can’t crouch to pee and meows angry when we stroke him. Vet checked him he’s just old.
Thank you for his video and the online course, our 21 year old cat has arthritis, diabetes and kidney problems, but for his age and all this he is still quite active and doesnt look a day over 20. 🙃 (We see the vet on a regular basis to have him checked.)
I was looking for what more things I can do to make life as painless as possible for him and in your course there were a few things that i hadnt thought of myself, so on behalf of our cat Mori: thank you!
I’m really pleased I could help a little 😻
Haha yes thats absolutely true! 😻
I feel so jealous that foreign cats life span is so much 🥺 I have my 3 cats, I foster many... But you all know life span of Cats in Nepal is only 9 to 10 years... Guys I feel so disappointed that I live in such a country... I am giving my cats raw since I rescued them in their 1 month of age.. Hope my cats could live with me more than just 10 years 🥺
I am so sorry to hear that cats dont get that old there, still, at least they can have a good life with you, with someone who loves them and takes care of them, even if its for a shorter time. 😽
@Julie Plummer Thanks for the questions... You need to know... Here, in Nepal, no vets are good... Qualified for cats... No homes and communities are cat friendly... I'm keeping my cats indoors... By being stubborn with my parents... Here, street cats and domestic pet cats are same...living outdoors... Sadly... People say I'm cruel... Keeping cats indoors.
How about stiff back legs?
My cat is almost a year old and he has this clean soar on the back of his back leg. And i just wanna know if he is ok
My 4 cats, all from the same litter, are 14 and all have varying amounts of arthritis. Only one showed obvious symptoms - she very slowly settled into catloaf. One showed no problems until excruciating pain (saw vet within an hour). He was crying and very obviously terrified. Two avoided stairs (used to zoom) and refused to chase dot light. Thing is, you need to have it diagnosed (Xray works well) before treating. We thought their mama had arthritis but it turned out to be cancer.
My boy has been doing this since I met him, he doesn't actively show that he's in pain, but it's little things like the way he will hold himself sometimes I've learned as a sign of pain posture, do you know anything about pain posture? I can't find anything about it but I was recommended to looking into seeing if he has arthritis. He is 6-7 years old, and has FIV.
Hello please reply to this comment
My cat as if rn isnt much of an outdoor cat , she started sleeping in the garden of the house, she isnt jumping, she is still able to get to litter but she still very loving towards us but grumpy towards her children and most of all her back legs wont work and the vet told us she has nerve damage and she is also not able to pee and you have to kind off push her stomach to pee please help
my cat as some of those symptoms, but i modified everything in the house from putting padding and pillow where he jumps off to making things easier for him, he limps on is front leg. I also use a glucosamine MSM supplement and omega 3 hemp oil supplement, turmeric, ginger ashwagandha, red reishi and 5 defender mushrooms therapy. Some days are worse than others for the limping. I do not want to give him drugs anti inflammatory that could cause other problems.
What's the BEST RELIEF for older cats ? Help
😢omg my cat has all of this she's just 5 months old, and sadly we don't have vet in here I have no idea what to do, she's just showing early stage...any advice?
My cat is 14 and only has some of these symptoms.
Cbd is really beneficial for arthritis in pets
No it doesnt, cbd has no physiological effects on animal nervous systems including humams. Its an excuse of the cannabis industry so that thc can be grown for potheads.
Hi, apart from all the symptoms you have mentioned, today I noticed my cat curling the right back paw under when walking, so he is effectively walking on the top of his paw. Is this arthritis or is it a symptom of something else?
It could be arthritis but also another problem could be going on so I would definitely recommend going to see your vet
What I noticed is her holding her spine arched when she walks. She is 19 years old.
Poor babies :(

My cat just turned 15 and his back has been twitching and when he is sleeping he twitches. His previous vet mentioned that he might have hurt his back at some point because he hates when vet examines him. I haven’t taken him to the vet in 2 years because it’s stressful for him and for me. I give him glucosamine. I am observing him and may have to take him to vet but it’s so hard with this whole pandemic. Any advice?
If your cat was a human I'd suggest magnesium supplement. But I don't know if its safe or useful in cats. Perhaps you can research it.
My cat got a severe UTI & needed 2 rounds of antibiotics to (sort of) clear the infection: clavamox/amoxicillian followed by cipro. The meds gave her terrible diarrhea so vet suggested a probiotic called fortiflora (which she LOVES).
The antibiotics did help her regain some energy, so she's back to greeting me at the door everyday. She is able to hold her head up now, but she is still seems a bit lethargic. Sometimes she reverts to that loaf position, which indiciates she might be in pain.
Its almost like the antibiotics helped at first, but then she hit a plateau, and now she seems stuck at 60% health. Wondering how to get her closer to 100% .
Vet said her bloodwork looked great for he age (16, indoor cat with 1 hr of backyard exploring each day) & the main concern was just the UTI.
Vet will do another urinalysis next week to compare. If I had the money, I would also request another blood panel... the price of testing is insane.
Also ever since the antibiotics, she's caught a ton of fleas. Yet her brother (who has the same lifestyle) only has 1
flea.
Heard the fleas can "sense" which animal is weaker & will infest them bc they know a sick cat is unlikely to groom itself properly, allowing the fleas to have a field day.
on the sicker cat, bes the sicker animal ad
I have a 7 months old kitten. He has a tiny crepitus in his right shoulder, I took him with a vet specialist in cats and he said he didn't find anything wrong. I'm keeping my eye on him, but I can't get used to the tiny sound. His behavior is the same, very active and playful. I don't know what to do. Could this be "normal? I hope you can reply back because I'm very anxious.
If you have doubts then you could ask for some xrays to be taken or get a second opinion
My cat has started moving much more slowly and fearfully than previously. Its only just occurrto me it could be arthritis
I hope this helped Elisabeth, you should check out my free arthritis course here - ourpetshealth.com/arthritisminicourse
Pain killers for cats? Not taking my cat to the vet what an extortion daylight robbery
depends on how much you value your cat
@@OurPetsHealth That's a really condescending and unhelpful answer. Some people are going through hardships unexpectedly and they already have pets to care for and a vet visit could make or break their ability to pay other bills. That doesn't mean they value their pet any less.
@@coleenelizabeth5051 saying a vet visit is robbery is saying you value money over the health of the cat. Yeah some people go through hardships and can't even get their own dental work done but that is an appropriate answer to this half baked question and you're assuming a lot. They asked if they can just give the cat painkillers instead of taking to a vet when you need the vet to give you dosage for cat pain killers.
Try CBD
Then let your cat suffer.
My kitty is 8 And I worry about her having arthritis. She hesitates when jumping down and sometimes misses the landing when jumping up. She's still active and a spire fire but I worry about her back joints. Is treatment expensive? I'm not employed at the moment so sadly will have to wait until employment. She's my everything though 🥹💚💚💚
