    The cat we lost in October had cancer of the lower bowel, having decent faeces was a thing of great celebration. He could get up to 6ml of lactulose a day and he did have to three enemas in the 14 months of his diagnosis. Because we went to the vet with the first sign of something being wrong, monitored his bowel movements daily and kept him moving he had longer than normal after the diagnosis and had a decent quality of life for a 22 year old. Having a phenomenal vet who I can now call a friend helps a lot too.
    If Tiggs hadn’t been using a litter tray we would have missed it and it was Tiggs himself who decided to go out less as he aged. That’s one of the factors why my two kittens are going to be house cats.
    When you get any pet get insurance and factor in you will have to go to a vet at least once a year. As they get older you will have to go more often, here in the U.K. there’s the PDSA if you can’t afford. If you can afford please donate for those who can't. There’s no excuse for not visiting a vet.
    Please don't apologise for the terminology when you could be saving lives or at least extending it. You are Mallory present your videos exceptionally well, both of you give all the prevalent information. You should do a video about 'All About Cats' for no other reason than I’m nosey.

    I just saw this video and wished I had seen it four days earlier. My cat became very sick and the vet said there was an linear obstruction in the colon and recommended to put him down because there was nothing they could do but surgery. And they were only open two more hours on a Saturday!
    I was devastated and agreed to it, but wanted to find out what the object was in his colon.
    Turns out he had. Obstication , exactly like what she is talking about . After the necropsy , the vet called me back and told me there was nothing but poop inside his colon and I did the best thing because since he was FIV positive he wouldn’t have recovered from the surgery well! I’m still very upset about having to put to put him down!

      I'm so sorry for your loss, but let me share that my baby cat had fip years ago. He went through hell before we figured out what it was. I suspect your cat wasn't feeling bad from that at the time, but it would have become very traumatic to watch your baby go through. I truly know this loss from a few months ago, but he ultimately very likely had a far better end of life than he would have if he had lived to the point at which the fip reared it's ugly head. Once again, I am so sorry for the loss of your kitty angel. ❤

    My cat was diagnosed with megacolon and this is what I do and it works:
    1. Buy a 5 ml syringe.
    2. Every morning take the plunger out and pour in half of teaspoon Miralax directly into the syringe.
    3. Hold your finger on the syringe tip and pour water in until almost full.
    4. Cover both holes with fingers and shake until it dissolves directly in the syringe.
    5. Put the plunger back and give it to your cat on the side of the mouth so that she doesn’t choke.
    6. Buy some lactuloze and give her 4 ml every evening also.
    Do this every day and it won’t be any problems anymore. Don’t skip days. My baby hasn’t been constipated in over 6 months with this method. Putting everything directly into the syringe makes sure they get the full teaspoon but if you put in the food it might not work.
    Tip: buy some pet enemas at the vet or online and always have some in case of emergency.
    For the enema I fill up a 60 ml syringe with a dose of pet enema and warm water and I attache a long thin urinary catheter to it that I lubricator and put half way up and gently press all the water in. Works every time.

    My cat gets this a lot as he is elderly, has kidney disease and his bowel moves slowly. Because of the kidney disease, he is constantly somewhat dehydrated which makes his poop hard. I take him to the vet every 10 days to get fluids into him and occasionally use lactulose to get him moving again. Unfortunately, most of the medication to soften stools or stimulate the bowel put too much strain on his compromised kidneys and so can’t be used. Fluids, regular vet checks, wet food, my almost obsessive attention to how often he poops (!) and plenty of love are luckily keeping him going.....😁

He’s 20 years old now but still patrols his garden, comes for cuddles and has occasional attacks of the zoomies.😁 It’s just important to keep those fluids going as without them, his condition deteriorates. He’s also on a low dose of Enalapril for blood pressure and I put Ipakitine in his food to keep his potassium levels low - both of which help to protect his kidneys. We probably don’t have that many years left together, but his quality of life is really good for the moment and I’ve kept him going for 6 years with kidney disease, so there’s always hope. I hope your kitty does well, too.🙂

      @@wakinguptothetruth.2566 My boy weighs 4.5 kilos and he gets 2 spoonfuls of ipakitine every day plus a quarter tablet of Enalapril to lower his blood pressure and put less strain on the kidneys. He’s been on those for about 5 or 6 years now. I split the ipakitine between 2 meals but you can put it all in one if necessary. I have always fed my cat primarily on ‘real food’ - fish from the market - oily fish which he loves and never, ever dry food. I know a lot of vets recommend special kidney food, but I tried that at the beginning and he wouldn’t even try it. Despite what I have read about the dangers of a high protein diet in cats with kidney disease, his bloods (which we do every 6 months) have held steady on his old diet and my vet says the oil in the fish is good for him at his stage in life. He’s just past his 20th birthday and he’s had kidney disease for many years now. In terms of pain killer, my cat has never been on one for kidney disease but for an unrelated issue, he is now taking Gabarpentin 0.5 ml x2 a day. It is one of the best as it doesn’t stress the kidneys like others do. I also strongly recommend getting regular subcutaneous fluids (once a week/10 days).

    • @tiashiraz8430
      @tiashiraz8430 10 місяців тому

      @@user-dh8ne2of7f No. Fluids means IV fluids under the skin. If you do it weekly, it greatly helps with constipation. I do mine at the vet, but if you have a compliant cat and are not afraid of needles, it is easily done at home. The other trick is using Lactulose which (I think) is a human laxative (again, I get mine from the vet). It’s a sugary, sticky liquid. Initial dose is 3ml then 2.5 ml every 12 hours. Can take a day or two to have effect but it really helps them poop. Once they are no longer blocked, the fluids can help to keep stool soft enough to pass. I know how anxious it can be taking care of an elderly cat, so my heart goes out to you. If your cat is severely blocked then she/he may need an enema before anything else works. If you can afford it, then get the vet involved. My boy has an amazing vet and she’s been super helpful in managing his condition.

    One of mine had a wet obstipation. Not sure if it was the right terms. He tried to poop for hours ! Like 6 hours. He just pooped a tiny bit of diarrhea every few mins. He looked to be in such pain. Turned out he had cancer. 6 months before it. He slided he butt on the carpet. He also had accident out of the litter box. So please don’t take cats pooping abnormally lightly. I had to put him down after a few days.

    My cat is at the vet now getting iv fluids the vet noticed his kidney lv was slightly elevated and noticed his gut was firmed and had little hard stools he hasn't ate for like 6 days and I havnt seen him use the box or anything so he might be constipated, but he moves around and everything like normal jumping up on the bed or from the bed to the dresser to get into the window so I'm assuming he might be constipated the vet might also think it could be early kidney disease.

    Thanks for the video. My eight-year-old male cat had a bout of constipation and was seen by our local vet. He apparently checked out well (I was not allowed in the exam room) and was prescribed laxatone and psyllium fiber. Within two days he was
    working like a fine-tuned engine. His energy level went back to normal. What was not made clear was whether this regimen is intended to be permanent, or a treatment that will effect a "cure? Is it harmful to continue the laxatone and fiber indefinitely?

    • @AllAboutCatsYT
      @AllAboutCatsYT  2 роки тому +1

      Hi there! Unfortunately, Dr. Sarah can't reply to comments at this time, and I'm not a vet, so please don't hesitate to bring these questions to your local veterinarian. I would think, though, that this depends on a number of factors: why was your cat constipated in the first place? Was there a dietary change as well? How much of this fiber or other types of digestive support is he getting from his current diet? Many people do continue support with Laxatone and fiber indefinitely, and it most likely won't harm your cat, but it may not be necessary depending on the cause.

    my cat goes to the litter box to defecate multiple times a day. Sometimes nothing comes out. I noticed he strains, like if he was pushing and he'll wheeze. So it does look like he's trying to poop and may be constipated but then a squirt sound happens and a little liquid poop will come out. I initially thought he had diarrhea because of the liquid poop but now I'm wondering if with the straining it's actually constipation and maybe some liquid poop is able to go around the constipation block and come out....? My vet only did blood work and said his results were perfect.

    Cats get constipated a lot from eating carbs, which are in dry food. I struggled with my one male cat for the first few years of his life, rushing to Vets to get enema's, doing enema's on him myself. Finally it dawned on me, what makes ME go? Old Fashioned oat meal. So, I stopped giving kibble, that helped a lot, but that cooked tsp of oatmeal in wet food, got that boy no constipation for the rest of his life, which was 16 years. As his sister got older, she started getting more constipation. Same oat meal, she lived to 18. Constipation is awful! In cats and humans!

    What about hard stools followed by diarrhea when the hard stools finally come out? Is that like a cork in a champagne bottle effect? Our cat is usually ok, with soft serve ice cream-like stools, but this has happened the past couple of times she's pooped and it's been really stressful trying to clean her butt. She gets very upset and starts biting and squirming away. The hard stools cling to her fur, and the diarrhea gets everywhere. We've seen her strain only a few times, but drag her but across the floor frequently, and there seems to be a lot of mucus on her stool before we get to the diarrhea. So hard, dry stools, then mucus covered soft serve, then the diarrhea. We give her wet food because she has an aversion to water so we want to make sure she stays hydrated. We've tried a water fountain, but she was scared to death of it. We try to exercise with her daily with feather toys because she's missing a back leg, which we're sure doesn't help her when keeping her position while she's pooping. The vet emphasized exercise because she's a tripod cat and doesn't want her to have too much weight on her remaining three legs. She's about four or five years old, and before we adopted her she not only lost her back leg, but she also had a small litter of kittens. She's small, about 8 pounds, and has a VERY healthy appetite. We started off with one brand of wet cat food. Now we buy 4 different kinds. However, my husband wonders if we should just go back to the original cat food and not switch up so much. I also want to take her to the vet for testing and imaging. Should we just be giving her one kind/brand of food before having her tested at the vet? Or do both? She's insured but gets stressed when going to the vet. Sorry this was long. I'm just worried. I've tried putting a little water on her food, but she threw up once.

      @@cattalllina2857 I ended up taking her to the vet to do some imaging. Luckily she does not have a condition called "megacolon", so I was relieved. However, they found out that she's got severe joint disease, so she could be in pain when trying to squat to poop. So the vet said to try the water fountain again and give her more time to adjust, but in the meantime give her only wet food like I have been, add a tablespoon of water to each serving, and also to continue giving her some wet treats (the wet kinds that come in a tube where you rip off the ends--like Churu or something similar), and he gave me probiotics to mix in her food every day. She's also taking glucosamine to help with her joints. She's gone from pooping once a week to 2 to 3 times a week, so it's been much better and no more messes! I do feed her three small meals a day (with a tablespoon of water in each serving), and I give her two tubes of wet snacks, one tube I open her probiotic & glucosamine capsules and mix them together. The water fountain is coming soon. That'll be a late Christmas present when I'm not so broke from shopping. Good luck! 😉❤️

He eats prescription CD for crystals and fancy feast savory center wet food. I had to go away for work last week and I think he might have spit up his pills or medication on my mom, because this morning he had a massive amount that would not come out. His anus was swollen and the poop stopped right at the opening. It was huge. I was able to get it out using lube, hot water, and lactulose on the anus area. I used my fingers to get some and then he was able to push it out. I feel so bad for him. Making an appointment for the vet this week.

      You can buy real pumpkin in a can in any 0f the pet stores IE: pet supermarket, etc. It has no sugar.. just plain pumpkin. (U may hv to mix it with sum wet food, cuz most cats dont like it) My vet told me that 30yrs ago 🌝 mineral oil is fantastic.. n really inexpensive.. Just start out with a tiny bit in a bowl, (BY IT SELF) !! 1x a day, same time every day for a week, or so.. if u c its workin, but wud like it to b bettr.. add a tiny bit more. Or if u have to.. a little less.. Once u got them where u want it.. u can try n do it every othr day. Or just keep it like it is. " DO NOT GIVE IT WITH A SYRINGE !!! OR TRY N GET IT DOWN THERE THROAT ANY OTHER WAY" "AS THIS WILL KILL THEM"!! 😯😭 (Because IT'S OIL) let them lick it @there own pace. Coconut oil can make them gain weight eventually, my vet said. So I nevr tried it. The cat lax that comed in a tube is FANTASTIC also.. comes in a malt. The cats go nuts over it. Start out with s small amounts also, (just put it on yur finger) or they will have the runs. Most cats love running water. So i invested in a water fountain, as my boy also get UTI's. N didnt drink enough. My gosh all 4 of them drink so much water now, they just love the fountain. n theres like 5 other water bowls all over.. n theyd rather drink out of the fountain.. fine by me.. my boy no longer has had a UTI, its ben over a year. N there all drinkin a ton more.. A little bit of salmon wet food works also. The "Sheba pate" works great. I use 1 of the 1/2's (it comes in a snap package of 2) & give it every othr day. Cuz I found out the hard way. N gave each baby a full 1/2. N within hours.. they all had the runs.. ugh... What a mess...lol
      When buyin dry food.. wet food..n treats.. make sure moisture content is over 10%. I've been doin this with my for 20+ yrs. N have nevr had a problem.. or hairballs.. Hope @ least 1 of my recomen- dations hlps sum 1 😊
      PS.. Dogs also benifit from high moisture content in there foods n snacks. Just remember, unlike the kitties, who can go to there litter box... You doggies will need to go out to wee wee more often.. ( takin in more moisture (fluid) Best of Luck 😊

    Hello. My cat just poop and pee in his liter box. But after an hour he keeps on trying to poop. Now he is crying and his ears are quite cold. I keep on trying to force feeding him water with dextrose powder but he bites me. Even though I want to put suppository in his butthole I can't. What should I do?

    • @AllAboutCatsYT
      @AllAboutCatsYT  Рік тому

      Are you 100% sure that he's straining to poop, not pee? It sounds like you have a good handle on his habits, but I have to ask because urinary tract blockage or disease is sometimes confused with constipation. If you're sure that it's constipation and not severe (i.e. he is still getting out some poop), I would recommend giving him a good constipation remedy (a hairball gel is a good idea) either directly or mixed into his food. A suppository might be helpful, but you should make sure it's appropriate for cats. Cats cannot take a suppository made for an adult human, and vets will sometimes use a product made for pediatric use, but you have to get the dosage right to make sure you're not harming your cat. If you have access to a veterinarian, their assistance will give you a lot more peace of mind and a stable direction for your next steps.

    Hello! I have a question. My cat has been shivering while he's relaxing or asleep. Other than that, he's okay. He's got his normal appetite and he looks okay. But lately he's been extremely clingy and always wanting to sit on my lap. I also noticed that while he's sitting on me, i can feel that his body is trembling. It's not like his normal purr because the vibration is really strong. What do you think it is is there something wrong with him?

    Thanks for this video. I recently took my 3 year old male to the vet, he has been peeing and pooping very hard poops outside the box,Which wasn’t like him. He runs like you mentioned away from it. Well the vet said it was hairballs and to change his litter which I did, even though it was a litter I used before we had issues. the doc tested him for UTIs and felt his tummy. He was negative for proteins and he said he is too young to have further issues. Is this true or should I get a second opinion?

      @nesadcruz7840 2 роки тому +1

      Have you tried adding more fibre and liquid to his diet? My cat had similar problems too recently. The vet suggested I add fibre , he drinks a lot of water. I give him pumpkin now and then, also fresh grass from my garden , was told I can also give him cabbage. He was going out in the past but recently I have stopped letting him out so he has less access to grass. The Vet gave us some stool softener that helped get things moving.

      Any vet that says a cat is ' too young to have an issue' makes as little sense as saying a toddler can't have cancer or stroke. Babies can be born with cancer, tumours, sick children hospitals exist for a reason. Young people and animals get serious illnesses.

      She is stressing go to a vet for a diagnosis because UTIs can be fatal. Constipation and UTI symptoms can easily be confused. Soon, unless you are a doc or are able to monitor every BM or their amount and frequency of urine to distinguish between UTI and Constipation go see the vet asap.
