  • Has your pet just been diagnosed and your wondering what the treatment of arthritis in dogs and cats is? In this video I discuss the different drug treatments available, what the side effects are and how we can monitor our dogs and cats with arthritis to ensure they are as pain free as possible while at the same time minimizing side effects.
In this 3rd video in my arthritis series you will find out what drug is the best arthritis treatment for dogs and cats. Combined with the home care strategies discussed in my second video and you will be well on the way to ensuring your pet is as comfortable as possible.
There are many options out there and there can be no one-size-fits-all solution. Different drug treatments for arthritis will work differently in every individual. We also need to take into account any other illnesses the arthritis patient has. After all most arthritis dogs and cats are more elderly and the chance of a concurrent disease is reasonably high. Our arthritis treatment plan might be very different for an otherwise healthy senior compared to one also suffering from chronic renal disease or a liver condition. the best drugs to treat arthritis really will vary between individual.
NSAIDs are the most common choice and do an excellent job in most cases. Other options might include tramadol, gabapentin and even paracetamol (but never in cats).
Monitoring a dog or cats response to any home treatment changes or medications is also very important. Arthritis is a progressive disease and so what works now may not be enough in the future. Monitoring will ensure we make changes to our plan in good time rather than leaving our pets to suffer.
There is no cat or dog arthritis cure but we are able to treat this disease better than at any point in the past. You owe your pet as good a quality of life as possible.

I would be honored! My cat Courtney is currently being treated for arthritis and CKD. I recently concluded my own research that entailed multiple consultations with my veterinarian as well as hours of discriminating internet research. Your videos not only matched all of the information I had so painstakingly obtained but also surpassed it. You are now my go to source! I am subscribed to your UA-cam channel and following you on Twitter. Thank you for providing such an invaluable resource for pet owners and pets alike.

What about canine aspirin that you buy at the pet stores? Can this help with swelling and arthritis pain in senior dogs?

My Rottweiler Service Dog Damian is 9 years old 111.6lbs. He had ACL surgery at 2 and 4 on his knees. He recovered great. He lived an active life walking everywhere with me. 5 to 9 miles daily.. Last Wed Oct 21,2021 he woke up could hardly walk. After 2 days I got him into the Vet. She said he had sever arthritis and prescribed 1/2 of a 7.5mg Maloxican and 300mg of Gabapentine twice a day. After a week. All he wants to do is sleep. He seem to be in pain. Particularly when He is trying to get up.. He is eating and drinking well. When he first gets up. He can hardly walk. After a little distance he starts to move better. The Vet has him scheduled for Laser therapy tomorrow. What is the expectations for this out come?

I gave my 6 yr old Old English Bulldog Hank Previcox perscribed to me by the vet after a minor cist removal. 5 hours after he came home iI gave him a pill and he went into distress 10 minutes after injesting it with food he was acting scared and dizzy and breathing like he was having a asthma attack. He collapsed and we rushed him to a emergency vet 25 minutes away (closest one) and he went into cardiac arrest in the parking lot. We ran him in and the did CPR but Previcox had killed him. He had no health issues besides allergies. I am destroyed over this but after looking into his medication I realized my people have a similar story. PREVICOX KILLED MY DOG DO RESEARCH BEFORE YOU GIVE THIS TO YOUR DOG, I WISH I HAD.

Thank you for sharing your story. I had something similar happened where I gave my older sick dog medicine prescribed and same thing happened to her basically. The guilt will last for a while but you have to understand that you are thinking you are doing the right thing.. But I completely understand the feelings of distress guilt et cetera. But over time it will get better

My little Chihuahua Speckles has been put on gabapentin and levafen for arthritis, do you think that's a good combo or does the gabapentin get to a point where it doesn't work? Thank you, I'm a brand new subscriber.. 😊

I had to stop gabepinton for my 12 year shih tzu because it made him stop walking and crawling. He wasn’t like that before he started it. So he is off it.

My male dachshund has advanced arthritis. He was hurting so bad that he wouldn't walk. The vet gave him tramadol along with his gapapentin and this didnt help. i watched this video and asked for a NSAIDS and vet gave him carprofen. In 30 minutes our male dachsund was walking again. Then the side effect of diarrhea began on day 3. We stopped the carprofen. Now vet wants to give antibiotics? Any advice, please help.

Arthritic dogs almost always can take glucosamine supplements. If you’re scared to give them ask your vet. Bone broth helps too. We make it easily & simply with our costco roast chickens bones & skin & water in our instant pot just hit broth & we cycle it twice to make sure the bones are soft.

We give our arthritic dog bone broth made easily from chicken bones & skin in our instant pot just add water & push the broth button. We cycle it twice to make the bones soft. Our dog no longer limps, she’s no longer on dog pain meds & she runs & plays like a puppy. She still loves naps but she no longer licks her flank at all. She used to lick it like crazy constantly till her coat looked all ruff.

Hey doc, I have to ask, is Arthritis the beginning of the end for my dog? I say this in the sense will it inevitable lead to him getting so immobile that some day he’d have to be put down? Any insight on this would be really helpful 😣

@@revathishindhe2199 I’m not a vet, so I don’t think there’s much I can say other than you definitely need to take him back to the vet so they can SPECIFICALLY get him on a diet plan to reduce his weight. Pain Killers like Meloxicam can have lasting side effects so I wouldn’t just administer that him without consultation from a vet 🙁 how old is your dog? And can he do any moving at all?
