First Time at Our New Off-Grid, Water Access Wilderness Cabin! Summer Fun, Setting Up & Fishing
Come along with me and my family as we dive headfirst into the wild unknown of our new off-grid water access cabin tucked away in the stunning Canadian wilderness. It was a real adventure getting there, cruising through the waters on a long boat ride to finally unlock the door to our rustic paradise. We spent our days basking in the summer heat, swimming, setting up our dock, and exploring the rugged beauty that surrounded us.
One highlight was stumbling upon a hidden waterfall and sharing a special moment teaching my son how to clean fish by the crackling campfire. The fish fry that followed was a feast for the ages under the twinkling night sky. Of course, Mother Nature had her say too, keeping us grounded the next day with strong winds and rough waves. But that just set the stage for our next escapade - a canoe adventure to uncover the secrets of the backcountry lakes. Stay tuned for more tales of our wild family escapades at our off-grid retreat!

You might want to add a foot valve on the water supply line so it holds a prime, which you have to do with the hand pump. You know these things whn you grew up without the modern conveniences. we had a big copper kettle in our attic to supply the toilet water and hand sink in the bathroom. Love your new cottage..

The pitcher pump at the sink needs to be primed with a bunch of water poured down it to create a suction.

Needs a foot / check valve at far end of supply pipe, it holds the water in the pipe, so after it fills....water pumps almost first pump...
The foot valve is probably around there somewhere. Ole dad jim will figure it out lol

"Whatcha doing, Dad?" over and over again from Huddy is one of my favorites. I was especially impressed when he picked up one end of the the canoe to bring it ashore. Some useful skills there. Loved Tori's grin when she was outfishing you! I thought this cabin would just be another set of chores for your busy family, but absolutely loved seeing all of you able to relax and enjoy your time there.

Well I would say my favorite part was just seeing the smile on everyone's faces and having a good time. The kids are getting so big and huddy is so helpful. He's such a little gentleman. I can tell there will be many more fun times had and lots more memories made. So very happy for you all. And Tori excellent job on the fishing.

Jim and Tory, this video makes us smile so much. Fifty years ago we bought a rustic log cabin on 40 acres of western upper peninsula wild land. It was a spur of the moment decision. We had snowshoed through five feet of snow to look at the camp. My wife was pregnant with our first child at the time but didn’t know it. We have many fond memories of our times there. Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy your camp as your kids grow.

Hudson is honestly so smart and more advanced than almost all kids I have seen his age. It’s a testament to the way u guys live. Clearly is better for a kids development than the typical modern day life. Someone needs to do an in depth study on your family and the benefits long term for kids. Contact a top notch university to look into that.

Thank you for bringing us on your family getaway at your new cabin. It means a lot to me when you're alone.
When our son was six months old, we traveled the five hours to the camp in our Bronco. He was in a card board box between our seats. During that trip we decided to return to camp via a rude trail from the nearest town which was twenty miles away. It was June, black fly season. The trail was through swamp. Five miles in we encountered a beaver flooding. It was a hundred yards to the other side. I locked in the 4WD and crept forward. The water was above the floor boards. Somehow we climbed out of the flooding with the water flushing from the vehicle. Had we not, it would have been a bug bitten several mile hike to the camp. Good memories. Carry on.

This was another awesome video to watch from start to finish!!! Little Huddy is such a character especially when he said, "You have to cook it first." Always appreciative of your content. God bless to you family.
Couple of recommendations. Get you 3 or 4 #40lb propane tanks to replace that big one. Carrying that thing around will get old quick. Another idea is set up a couple of rain barrels fed by a gutter from the roof. Then you can just stick a short piece of pipe from your hand pump right to the barrels. Easier than trying to prime 30 feet of pipe. Lastly, bring one of your small portable electric generators w/ solar panels and leave it there. Then string LED lights in the cabin. Propane lights are miserable to use when it's hot.
Huddy 👏🏿 is the Man... so Adventrous, i can see him on "ALONE" in 20 yrs. When he said thats dirty & threw the bucket out, oh my 🤣🤣🤣 & caught his 1st Fish. Oh oh "go back to new house" He Stole the Show.. Big Boy Wes is Chilling w his Beautiful Hair. Extraordinary Children. Just ❤❤❤ watching the kids. TORI you cool, Jim you alright. Great Family.

Beautiful place Guys. Hey Jim you need a foot valve to hold the water in the pipe. Then fill the pipe full from the kitchen sink. Watch that guy who sunk a well by hand, Mr. Dave Whipple. He's like Red Green. You know the saying 😅...
Yes, no foot valve to be found but the base of the hose had threaded insert for one

You need to prime the pump with water. Pour water into the pump and pump it at the same time.

I agree with him you need to get some water in a bucket and prime the pump. Those old hand pumps need that when they haven’t been used in a while

Hey Jim, next time you cook corn on the bbque try it with the husks on, just soak them in water first that prevent them from catching fire, 10-15 minutes they are usually done, time may vary. They steam in the husk, lots of flavour. Your way is good too cheers!
Making memories are most important.
Jim, I’ve pumped water from the lake my entire life, you need a check valve on the end of your line , I’d also recommend a cage and bag filter at that end to keep sediment, bugs and fish out of the line and your check valve. You’ll need to pour enough water in the pump to fill that line which can be a chore as the line wants to float. You sure have a good helper there with Hudson!

You gotta prime the pump, pour water in the top of the pump, backfilling the line, you most likely need a backflow preventer also...
Thanks a lot and I need a foot valve but I think that’s the same as a back flow preventer. Couldn’t find one there so it’s on the list plus the pup leather flap needs to be swapped out.

What a beautiful spot Jim! You can see the family unwind the stress melt away as it should be at the cabin. Looks like some lovely country around the lake and that waterfall is an amazing spot to fish or camp out with the kids in a tent for a night. Congrats on the cabin!

It's funny - every off-grid/hunting/fishing camp in Canada seems to have been set up similarly. We had one in northern QC - same deal with the plumbed propane lights/fridge stove and the hand pump on the sink. Some tips and upgrades:
- there should be a foot valve on that pipe in the lake. And you need to tie a jug/floater to it to keep it off the bottom. Sand will foul the foot valve otherwise.
- we installed a tee with a ball valve in the cabin next to the pump. One leg to the sink, the other up to a holding tank in the peak of the roof. Saves having someone pump while you wash your hands.
- we ended up hand-digging a shallow well next to a spring - way better than having lake-water "swimmers" in your coffee.
- insulate the floor if it isn't already.
- 12V deep cycle batteries and a small solar panel for lighting - propane lights give off quite a bit of heat (nice in the winter, though)
