That "guy" who escorted Ella onto the stage was none other than Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, Danish bassist par excellence, and Oscar Peterson's bassist of choice. Known as NHOP, or "the Dane with the never-ending name", he passed away all too soon in 2005, at the age of 58, of congestive heart failure. A true loss to the world of jazz.

Интересная подробность о творчестве Эллы, включая ее коллегу бассиста Нилса, тоже очень неординарного джазового музыканта, постоянно игравшего с Оскаром Питерсоном...

Very fortunately I saw OP several times, and NHØP a few. I treasure the autographs they signed to me in LPs and CDs. God bless their Souls.

I once saw Ella on TV singing with Frank Sinatra. Frank Sinatra’s body language and facial expressions showed that he was in ABSOLUTE awe of Ella Fitzgerald. MUSIC r

It should also be said that the drummer is Martin Drew who had made several appearances and recordings with Oscar, Niels, and joe pass. He always laid down a rhythm that made the music take on a special meaning.

Oscar says the tune on the fly, Ella ends his solo improvising to to him "are you gonna take one..."
God, could be music ever go any better than this

Ella improvises since the beginning, sounds as she had forgotten the lyrics. The funniest sing is the beginning of her chorus is NOT an impro : she does the same thing with Ellington, and in an another performance with Oscar Peterson.

Gawd that is absolutely beautiful in every way. This made me cry tonight watching Oscar lay back on the back side of the beat on those chords smiling hugely as each resolution happened so magically. I mean, nothing in life is so magic as something like this and this is why I have always been a musician. Music is magic. This kind of music is spiritual.

the genius that was Oscar Peterson....the artist who knew every square inch of the piano inside out, who played them notes as nobody could, had the humbleness to lay out the first chorus, because...well... it's Ella...what else do you need when she's singing?...and I'm pretty sure that was just a spontaneous decision by him.

The only thing questionable about this performance is VHS tape. But thank God for VHS tape or else we wouldn't have it! And Thank God for You Tube! I watched a video of the same era with Basie and he passed away in '83 or '84, so I think this from the 1980s. And if you notice she sings to Oscar, "Are you going to take one?" Oscar and the band are letting her do whatever she wants but, in respect, she is saying, what do you want to do? Humility. Artistry. Teamwork. We have seemed to have forgotten that a lot in this century.

I love this version and in the same way I love the studio version with Ben Webster on tenor sax. The louder bass guitar sound is a creative improvisation in replacement of the sax which is a jazz way of doing it.

That voice still sounding fine and mellow, don't know how old she was here but you could expect her voice not be so good in older age but no way, flip she's the queen and swinging it!

Her voice seemed to hold up pretty well until after her bypass surgery which I believe was in 1986. After that her vocal performance declined dramatically. She had been in vocal decline since the around 1970, but she was still able to pull off impressive vocals as seen on video from appearances throughout the 1970's, into the early 1980's. Her voice was at it's most pristine in the 1950's after she lost some of the nasality and really came into her own, began recording the Songbook series and working with Nelson Riddle and Norman Granz. She had a great run from 1955-1968.

agreeing with direfranchement. based on their looks I think it's taped around 1978-1980 and at that time she could still sing very well. Her Montreux Concert album with Basie in 1979 was just one of her best performances ever, not only for that time.

Come on, Isabelle, this is Ella & Oscar! Cut 'em some slack - these two could do no wrong! I think the grainy old film and sound quality just add some mystique to the presentation. It's like listening to your favorite old recordings on scratched-up vinyl -- am I making any sense? It just makes it better!
