The whole idea of a second brain is something that I have a little bit of a keen interest in recently. A few months ago I read Building a Second Brain by Tiago Forte and I found the whole concept of the second brain really interesting and something that I wanted to try out for myself.
There are loads of different ways to set up your own second brain as there are loads of different app combinations you can use to make a really efficient and effective second brain. However, for people who are just starting to think about their second brain, it can be pretty overwhelming to actually start and set up a second brain from scratch.
One of the main things that needs to be taken into account in a second brain productivity system is the CODE Method which is basically how you are going to deal with any information and any new ideas that you have. Firstly, you need to capture the information which you see as important. Then, you organize this information according to when you are going to need it. Next, you distill the information which means that you try to find the key points of the information you have captured. Finally, you express what you know or in other words, you show your work to other people. This CODE Method is the core foundation of the second brain productivity system.
This video is going to show you how to set up a really simple second brain to get you started using this CODE Method.

This is the video I wanted. You are so clear in your thoughts. Other people were making it so hard!
Glad you found the video useful! I know it's a difficult topic to break down so glad this video helped you out!
Thanks very much for the comment. I really appreciate it! 😀
Thanks! I have strong ADHD symptoms. I had brainstormed apps for my second brain. I think Google's apps are the best for me. I can easily sync apps in between apps, with no lags and simplicity. This vid resonated with this idea. Wishing you more blessings to come this year.
I really have a soft spot for the Google apps for the same reasons. Yes they have their own limits but for a simple second brain they are perfect!
Thanks very much for the comment. I really appreciate it! 👍
Straight forward video that give explaination regarding CODE and PARA method. Thanks mate! Hi from Malaysia🤗
Hi Faris. Thanks very much for the positive comment. I really appreciate it!
i like the way you consistency update a new video. keep going! and thanks alot
Thanks very much for the comment. I really appreciate it! 👍
In a previous video you mentioned being sure to create your own instead of just collecting. That....was really an "a ha" moment for me. So, thank you!
Glad I could help! 😀
Love the video and your ideas. Could you work through some practical examples for 2nd 🧠. Many thanks Paul
Thanks very much for the comment. I will definitely get a video out in the next week or two looking at some practical examples of a second brain. Thanks for the video recommendation! 👍
I'm curious as to how do you apply the PARA on Keep. Seems kinda limited... or how are you setting up the Labels into some kind of system?
I kind of just use the labels to put them into a general project or area. When I move my notes to my Google Drive, I then put them into the relevant project or area. Google Keep is definitely limited so I really only use it as a quickly accessible option that allows me to take notes quickly which I can then expand on and organize properly when I have the time. Hope that helps!
And this is exactly one of the limitation on using gdrive-gdocs-keep for PARA. But creating a gdoc first whithout Keep is even faster then opening and using Evernote on iPhone…. So, yes Gdoc, Gdrive is a great PARA tool. 😊
Thanks very much for all this the my brother
Not a problem at all! 🙂
I really have a hard time wrapping my head around the PARA system for organization - the hierarchy is counterintuitive to me, do you have any other recommendations?
Hi Patricia. Thank you for the comment!
I found it quite confusing to begin with when I started my own second brain but I stripped it back a little bit first.
I began by just having my projects folder with another folder with everything else not related to a project in. Over time, as I captured more information about a range of different topics, I developed my areas and resources folder to keep the information organised well. I wouldn't worry about this to begin with as I found that these two folders naturally developed over time and I had a clearer understanding of what needed to go into each one over time. Once I had finished a project, my archives folder just appeared naturally with everything that I had used in my projects that I didn't really need anymore.
I would focus on just having a projects folder to begin with and then develop from there as and when you need to. Hopefully over time you will start to see the development of the other folders in the PARA system.
I think this article from Tiago Forte's website is quite helpful as well - fortelabs.com/blog/para/
Hopefully that kind of helps you out a little bit!
@@JonnyBoyd Thanks a lot for the thorough response!
I tend to be super impatient and want everything all set and nice right now. I have to accept that this is a huge work in progress over a long period of time & stop stressing and overthinking it.
I also get anxious thinking about projects because I don’t think I really have any.
How do you implement PARA using Keep?
I would mainly use the tagging function although this pretty basic. I always use Google Keep with Google Docs and Google Drive which allows me to organise my notes properly using the PARA System when I have a bit more time.
Hope that helps a bit!
Thanks for the comment 👍🏽
I only use the Mymind app, everything in one place.
Mymind app is a great tool to use as well!
Are you related Mike Boyd by any chance. Your English accent is similar. And I checked that your last name is 'Boyd'.
I don't believe I am. Sorry! 🙂
Could we have subtitles please ?
Hopefully there should be subtitles on it now! 👍🏼
If you want to be impressive, demonstrate how quickly you can find anything in your second brain. How do you know what notes are pointing to your current note? Obsidian, Notion, Vimwiki, and emacs people would probably say this isn't a second brain at all.
The bidirectional links are not part of the second brain concept. The proof is that Tiago Forte uses Evernote as his second brain, and this functionality is quite recent. In fact, Tiago himself has published some data from his course, where the majority of second brains are built in Apple Notes.
