  • The PARA Method: Frequently Asked Questions Answered
I have a list of the 20 most frequently asked questions about the PARA Method, a system for organising and storing information devised by Tiago Forte, the developer of the Second Brain productivity system.
In this video I am going to go through these FAQ’s to help you build and implement the PARA Method for yourself.
The PARA Method is a system to organise information according to when we are most likely to use it in the future. PARA is made up of only four folders which each have a specific role that is going to allow you store everything you capture for use later on.
These four folders are projects for things you are actively working on with a define end date and defined outcome. Areas are things that require ongoing management over a long period of time. Resources are things you have an active interest in or want to learn more about. And Archives are things you are no longer using from the other three folders. These 4 folders are the only folders you need to organise and store information that can be used in the future.
I’m going to go through each of these folders and answer the FAQs for each so feel free to skip to whichever section is going to be the most beneficial to you. There are timestamps at the end of the description!

How do you deal with multiple Areas that are all related? Tiago appears to use prefixes in the folder names, like "FL" for all his Forte Labs areas, etc.. What about breaking down Finance into different sub-areas, like checking/savings, investments, insurance, etc. and breaking down Health sub-areas, like diet/food log, exercise, Dr. A, Dr. B, test results, etc.? Right now I use another level of hierarchy depth for these, but I'm trying to learn the "pure" PARA approach and it seems like there's only one level of hierarchy/folders/break-down within each of the 4 main categories. Any experience/suggestions?

Thanks for the question and sorry for the delay in getting back to you!
From my own point of view, I think the PARA method is a starting point for your organisation and I think that when it comes to Areas and Resources, there is a need to break these down a bit more into sub-areas as you suggested. For example, health is a massive area so to have everything contained together might not be best practice. Instead, it makes sense to divide this up into diet, exercise, habits, etc.
As with everything, I think finding the right balance that suits your own needs and workflows is best so my honest advice is to use whatever feels comfortable to you!
Hope that helps a little bit! 🙂

Yep I only use Google Drive to store information in my PARA System. I just find it has everything I need but I am always open to trying new apps and software!
