It is extremely rare that a live version of a song is better than one that was produced in a studio.

Hes done it with almost every song of his lol Elton live is unreal hands down beats the studio recordings
Only other I can think offhand is Whitney Houston-
Every Elton song is better live. The way he sings his songs and word groupings changes over years and gets better. He’s the best.

I was obsessed with Elton from the age of 6, and this was the first time I saw him with my mum and late dad.. December 86 in Sydney... I was 10 years of age and my mum always told the story that i just stood there with my mouth wide open the whole show in amazement - some 40 concerts later and nothing has changed.

I was listening to this song this morning thinking of the Queen now to hear that she passed.
What adds more significance to this song is that at this time Elton found out he had potentially cancerous growths in his vocal cords which turned out to be benign,he knew at the time this could be the last time he sang this song. I’d get emotional too

@@Caltops78 Neither :( Was due to go when he had his 2019/2020 world tour before covid. My wife died 6 weeks beforehand and I just couldn't go without her. Guess I'll never see him now, but I'm okay with why I didn't go.

this song was about Marilyn Monroe, not Diana....there is an adaptation done by Sir Elton at Diana's funeral....but this particular and original version was all about the life and death of Marilyn Monroe

There’s something about this performance, there’s something in his spirit. It’s like he was singing away his pain … he wasn’t just giving a goodbye , he was praying .
I’ve always loved this song and Marilyn. I had a very bad addiction to pain pills prescribed by my doctor after a severe accident…an addiction that brought me so close to dying. To be honest, there’s no explanation why I didn’t die on several occasions during the six years I was addicted. My mom had told me she had already planned to play this at my funeral, because she was certain I wouldn’t survive. I’ve been sober for 12 years now. I’m so thankful I was given a chance at life again, unlike so many others that lose the battle.
Hang in there, Nicole, I admire your courage and strength, both for fighting/conquering your addiction and being able to share that.
