They were strictly top 40 pop flavor of the week. I just heard this song for the first time in almost 40 years.....it is incredible. It's funny how time changes your perspective. I was talking to a group of Punk and Metal heads the other day and all to the man - including myself - agreed that Abba are the only pop group we all love.
I'd love to see you all troop into the Abba Museum together. You can all mark the occasion by wearing T-shirts with Super Troopers emblazoned on the front. Just for a laugh.
What I don't understand is why all you Punk, Metal and Prog rock heads can't just say that you are Abba "fans", too. Instead you say that you "love" Abba, the "pop band". That sounds a bit patronising. As if Abba are just a cute little kitten, not part of the family. Face it. If any of your peers ask you who you are a FAN of, just say your punk outfit and your Abba. If they sneer, you sneer back. Don't be afraid. After all, you are cool. Like the Fonz, eh? Don't take offence. The way you behave is akin to a guy saying "I'm not religious, but yesterday I prayed like mad". The guy does believe. And you guys are FANS of Abba. Forget about "loving" them. Do you "love" The Sex Pistols? Do you "love" Metallica? Oh yes! We all love Metallica! We all love The Sex Pistols! Grrrrrrr! Rant over. Now time for a cuppa.

40 years on and this song still send shivers down my spine. Agnetha is one of the few singers who can cry with her voice when se sings. In the context of her painful divorce from Bjorn, how could they have asked her to sing those lyrics? But the pain in her voice is what makes this a masterpiece, despite the simplicity of the beautiful classical melody. Benny's piano is breathtaking and that line 'But you see...' ABBA, you had more magic in your fingernails than most of us have in our whole bodies, we love you!
Эти 40 лет пролетели как будто и не было... Если говорить про болезненный развод - так люди в общем всегда непросто подобное переживают... И конечно это отражается на всех причастных... Так жаль что не решились сохранить общее - хотя бы по семейному...
"Agnetha is one of the few singers who can cry with her voice when she sings" I agree, though that is not surprising to me given that Agnetha's idol when she was starting out as a singer was Connie Francis (a master of "crying" a song). Anyone familiar with Connie's songs and career knows Agnetha couldn't have asked for a better "teacher" or role model when it comes to infusing pure emotion in a love / heartbreak song.

I'm a mid fifties happily married man with a wonderful life. This song is the only one that brings me to tears like a great big baby. Brilliant music and I'm so glad ABBA are releasing a new album.
Actually , after aaaaallll the songs I´ve listened from every genre, this could be the most perfect song I have ever heard along with Bohemian Rhapsody.
This song is quite simply the best pop song that has ever been written. When you consider the lyrics are written by a man whose native language is not English, yet they touch every one of us who has lost in love. Musically the concept of the song is quite simple in its structure but the melody, the harmonies and the arrangement in the verse that starts “but tell me does she kiss”....is breathtaking. Agnetha’s lead vocal is so emotional, so honest and so stunning. Sung faultlessly to such a high standard that we are highly unlikely to ever witness again.
I discovered this fabulous song by this show called “Better Call Saul” which is now one of my favorite series making part of the breaking bad universe. The scene with this song matched perfectly and I have to admit that Vince always chooses the best songs for his show. Now to the main point, I love this song. One of my favorite ABBA song if not my favorite. Have a happy 2022

We all know Agnetha and Anni - Frid were fabulous singers and deserve the praise they have garnered. I'm not sure that Benny and Bjorn got enough credit as marvelous composers and arrangers of this song and so many others, all in addition to their role backing up the girls. The music of ABBA is ageless.
+medford briggs IKR! They are geniuses! It's kind of like a Richard Carpenter situation, Karen got a lot of credit for being an impeccable vocalist, but people fail to realize Richard was the brain child behind it all.
+CassieJazz96 You are exactly right about Richard C. We have a lot to thank him for in the great music he and Karen left in our souls. Along those same lines in 1968 Elvis was going on 3 years without a big hit song and growing tired of making so-so movies. Enter Mac Davis from Lubbock Texas . Mac shows Mr. Presley "In the Ghetto", "Daddy Don't Cry" and "Memories". Elvis records all three and his career is back on track. Funny how life rolls out like that.
Abba really were a joint enterprise. In 1970/71, the two ladies were actually backing singers for Benny and Björn! They had not found their groove, their voice in their first year together. But they were patient. The average age of the group was near 30 by the time Abba had achieved a path to international success, in a language that was not their mother tongue. Frida and Agnetha were very nuanced, expressionist singers (in English!): not just about having a fabulous basic sound. I don't think Benny and Björn would have achieved the same success as song-writers, or have been as inspired, had they somehow hooked up with two lady singers other than the amazing Frida and Agnetha - so joint enterprise!

To think that she sang to Bjorn while divorcing him. The song is phenomenal and the context in which it was written makes it even much more meaningful .
I don't know if this was already said - sorry if it's the case - I adore at 3:36 how her voice breaks, when she says "you've come to shake my hand" - there is a strong emotional parallel she is making for the song and it's not just singing a song - the feelings are real and she sends them perfectly to us. I love this song!
There are absolutely real feelings behind it. Björn had written it after their breakup and when he played it for them in the studio they all broke into tears
I really don't know how she stayed so strong to sing this. She once said this was the loneliest moment of her life, standing there, singing this song about her own heartbreak. It's been 6 months since my girlfriend of 4 years slept with someone else and I can't get through half of this song without crying like a baby..
When asked just a couple of years ago what her favorite ABBA song was, Agnetha said that it was this one. Happy to see something extremely painful turn into something positive.
I'm also a metal fan. ABBAS music is pure world class. The intro and ending is always good in their songs. Metal version 👉 ua-cam.com/video/zo3pfnldlD0/v-deo.html
Damn, I'm a metalhead too and it's kinda nice to see I'm not alone here. I'm not that huge on ABBA, but wow, they're actually really good. I think these kind of comments just go to show how much music can truly bring people together no matter how different their tastes may be.
When a song written 43 years ago, pops into one's mind, then there is no doubt that this is a time piece that will never grow old. So talented , endless hits that impacted millions of people around the world. Every time I listen to their music, it touches my soul and I feel incredibly moved by the lyrics. Each of their tracks is a ballad, that is a story, that most people can relate to.
Its only when you reach a certain age is when the sheer depth of this song becomes apparent. The pain etched on the face of Agnetha breaks your heart. Beautifully performed and beautifully written. Words cannot describe the absolute majesty of this work of art.
Yes, I agree! I heard this song years ago when it was a hit and many times since- but only now, in my 62nd year did it truly get inside of me. I have listened to it 10 or 20 times in a row, gobsmacked by the depth and beauty of it each time.
Had a real horrible break up to this song. Played it over and over, said everything I was feeling...women believe that men don't have feelings when it comes to love. That relationship devastated me, but this song helped me through it. Believe me ladies our feelings are there....great song.....
Edward Brewster I feel what you said my friend if my relationship fail, surely I will return to this same video, cry and then I'll copy the link to send it to my GF.
+Edward Brewster I was a kid when this came out, but i also listened to this track uncountable times when i had my own horrible break up in 2010. Even though the lyrics make me sad, they are also logical and kind of relieving. Btw i not over her and i'll never be, since she was my soulmate. I moved on of course, but she was the one. Not only men have feelings, they're are even more sensitive than women. Women cry their eyes out after a break up for maybe 3 days (maximum), afterwards they're pushing the restart button and go on with a smile. Men are looking cool on the surface even though heartbreak eats their soul.
Savannah Ministries yes Savannah .. i agree .. Abba has been next to me all my life and they always have the perfect song .. for my downs and ups .. gorgeous music
Damn! That woman's got some pipes. It's tempting to dismiss their vocal talent when it gets buried in harmonies and fancy production, but then you hear a solo performance like this....Holy crap can she sing.
They have great voices also without production. There are many live recordings confirming this. The harmonies are actually one of the best features of the ABBA music in my view. Many people /bands have tried to copy it. Agnetha was a very popular singer already in Sweden in the late 1960’s before joining ABBA. They didn’t have autotune yet….
This is her best song. Sung from the bottom of her soul , this song was just between two people on that stage a heart breaking song of love lost and a family destroyed. She was like a Thorn Bird singing her best song while dying inside. They had everything but love is fragile. You need to hold it gently like holding sand on your palm. If you try to grab it, it will slip through your fingers . This was a masterpiece born out of immense pain and sadness.
There will never ever be a pop group like Abba. They created songs you can listen to a zillion times, and they stay as fresh as before. The Winner Takes It All is one of their best. The most melancholic song with an uptempo beat.
The saddest song of all (song - of -all) Yet most beautiful (beau - ti - ful) Beside the victory (vic - to - ry) That's this song's destiny (des - ti - ny)
What's extremely depressing to me about this song is the message is that we're not in control of our own fate or destiny, it's all luck. The metaphor of the gods sitting around a table playing games with your life is eerie. Even if everything is going well in your life, all it takes is for them to lose the game for you to lose something near to you, no matter how big or small. You are nothing more than a spectator of their games, reaping the winnings or losses.
I think you might have misunderstood the lyrics. What the true meaning is about someone realizing how their life, as they knew it, has been shattered to pieces. But, mostly that because you trust in the other, the other can abuse that trust. So, the feeling of the "gods" (actually, a reference to Greek mythology) is quite understandable, because Greek gods were sometimes quite cruel to humans. You get the clue that infidelity was the cause of the breakup in the line "Tell me, does she kiss the way I used to kiss you. Does it feel the same, when she calls your name". Anyone who has been cheated on knows what that is all about. This song is about a woman who feels out of control because her husband already has his future, while she has nothing. She didn't even know anything was wrong, which makes her feel small. She feels her life is now out of her hands. I hope that helps you understand it better. This is a great song.
@@lawrenceshields8779 Music is and should always be subjective to the listener. OPs first feelings and emotions upon hearing this song were what she stated and so, for her at least, what she said is the true message of the song.
@@shussey1446 No, I gave the true meaning of the lyrics, not the feeling that someone else feels about the song. The OP suggested that the lyrics made no sense, & I set them straight. Whether that person liked the song is the only thing that was subjective. You must remember this: there is a difference between reality (truth) & subjectivity, (feelings).
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE ABBA!!!!!!!! They wrote one HELLUVA LOT INCREDIBLE stuff, and The Winner Takes It All has to be one of THE MOST CLASSIC SONGS OF ALL TIME, BAR NONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ladies and Gentlemen: A masterpiece in pop history. The composition, the lyrics and the vocals are on point. It still makes me emotional. Just think about it: He wrote it and she sang it. For every songwriter, this song should be a benchmark for good music quality.
People who don't know another language don't know how incredibly hard it is to write poetry in another language. I write, read, speak, and understand 4 languages besides english, and it's something I wouldn't even attempt. That's how talented Bjorn was.
The thing I loved most about this song is that you could feel the pain in Agnetha's voice. I had tears falling down my cheeks the first time I heard this song
It’s very hard to pick a best ABBA song but this is surely right up there. That moment when Agnetha’s voice almost cracks when she sings “you’ve come to shake my hand” gets me every time. Definitely their best video. The album Super Trouper is pure perfection.
Love Abba, but I'm also unfortunately living this song right now. Things aren't all sorted out yet after a long relationship, but hopefully we'll both be happy, winners...
i find her high notes to be incredible because they are so clear. Many singers can hit those notes easily, but their tone becomes muddier. With Agnetia it's like she breaks through a ceiling into clear air... She could probably go a fair bit higher, but she wisely says "that's high enough"..
@Richard Mcnick I would say that Anna-Frid especially has this talent - being an opera singer she has already had to tone down her voice considerably..

+Shawn N. I was alive in the 70's when this song was first released. ABBA was in those days so bubble gum pop that they did not get the credit they deserved. They were strictly top 40 pop flavor of the week. I just heard this song for the first time in almost 40 years.....it is incredible. It's funny how time changes your perspective. On the same level as Dolly Parton's "I will always love you" or Sugarland's "Stay".

"Agnetha is one of the few singers who can cry with her voice when she sings"
I agree, though that is not surprising to me given that Agnetha's idol when she was starting out as a singer was Connie Francis (a master of "crying" a song). Anyone familiar with Connie's songs and career knows Agnetha couldn't have asked for a better "teacher" or role model when it comes to infusing pure emotion in a love / heartbreak song.

No one can sing this song better than Agnetha. She's got it all -- looks, voice, and loving fans.

We all know Agnetha and Anni - Frid were fabulous singers and deserve the praise they have garnered. I'm not sure that
Benny and Bjorn got enough credit as marvelous composers and arrangers of this song and so many others, all in addition
to their role backing up the girls. The music of ABBA is ageless.
+medford briggs IKR! They are geniuses! It's kind of like a Richard Carpenter situation, Karen got a lot of credit for being an impeccable vocalist, but people fail to realize Richard was the brain child behind it all.

Along those same lines in 1968 Elvis was going on 3 years without a big hit song and growing tired of making
so-so movies. Enter Mac Davis from Lubbock Texas . Mac shows Mr. Presley "In the Ghetto", "Daddy Don't
Cry" and "Memories".

It still makes me emotional. Just think about it: He wrote it and she sang it.
For every songwriter, this song should be a benchmark for good music quality.
Etalon.
You mean halcyon music, not "good" 🙂
Let's not forget English is not their first language...

People who don't know another language don't know how incredibly hard it is to write poetry in another language. I write, read, speak, and understand 4 languages besides english, and it's something I wouldn't even attempt. That's how talented Bjorn was.
This is such a sad song, makes me tear up but sing along at the same time.

Richard Albert Henderson yeeep.....agreed......😦
At 3:35 though, when you hear her voice start to quiver with emotion... that's a killer.

This song is so beautiful that it hurts
Really?

@@neotenyhd How It What Hurt FOR ABBA FANS TO MAYBE HEAR ONE DAY THE SINGER OF ABBA OR BENNY DIES OF OLD AGE!!
The thing I loved most about this song is that you could feel the pain in Agnetha's voice. I had tears falling down my cheeks the first time I heard this song

Best song of History. The final part is epic with Agnetha's voice, Frida's chorus, and Benny's piano.
@Bryan Ramoose (Brynosaur) Of course.
All 4 members are on backing vocals
Lindo ❤️💞
Tinha 10 anos,marcou muito 💞
A timeless masterpiece that transcends time. ABBA - Winner takes all. 👐🏽
'This song was written by Bjorn during their divorce'
'Imagine how painful it was for Agnetha to sing these song'
'Makes me cry'
I cried each time i listen to this song. So beautiful but so sad.
Dragoș Moldovan - The Winner Takes It All (ABBA) 🎙 The Voice of Romania 2019 (VIDEO) ❤️ : ua-cam.com/video/TX5wFP_9KqA/v-deo.html
I imagine half the royalty cheque would probably cheer her up.
Björn??? Bjorn dosen’t sound right
You mean Benny.
Thanks to Better Call Saul for bringing me back the nostalgia of listening to ABBA when I was a little kid.
Never again will there be musical timeless genius such as Abba
Well that was certainly true 5 years but that was before they released their comeback album "Voyage"and their virtual reality show.
It’s very hard to pick a best ABBA song but this is surely right up there. That moment when Agnetha’s voice almost cracks when she sings “you’ve come to shake my hand” gets me every time. Definitely their best video. The album Super Trouper is pure perfection.

One of the best, most heartbreaking songs ever written. You can feel the pain in her voice.
Yes graeham. The winner takes it all,,it's hurting me too
What a glorious voice . So sad for Agnetha and Bjorn but a masterpiece down to the piano lead near the end .
Love Abba, but I'm also unfortunately living this song right now. Things aren't all sorted out yet after a long relationship, but hopefully we'll both be happy, winners...
@@Ravisante5000 sorry to hear that. We have all been there. Things will get better.
@@graehamquilliam7019 Thank you Graeham, no worries, I've been through worse, but I appreciate that. Thank you.
One of the best piano intro. The piano intro sets the mood of the song..
🙋❤️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️💚💛💙🌹
Que vós linda eu amava demais este grupo 💞💕💕
It’s repetitive though
The piano was singing along all throughout the song with Agnetha.
As soon as you hear the start of this song your heart just melts. Possibly the best love song ever
This is a song about how life really works. Good luck and many blessings to you whom are often not the winner
The high note is so bone chilling and powerful
i find her high notes to be incredible because they are so clear.
