RIP Kirk, you have had a wonderful life and brought so much pleasure to millions of people's you will live on forever in your movies thank you xx...Thank you for sharing this movie.
What a fantastic film! I really enjoyed that and I think the humour is still funny today. This film is a timeless classic! I wish black and white films like this would make a big come-back. Good clean fun humour is what the world needs in today's stressful world.

ALL created endless opportunities for great conversation & gave ways to work through the real life stuff of kids & teenagers ... and their parents... (my siblings, me and our parents) ... created good conduits to better understanding & more empathy ... less silence more ways to keep the vital lines of communication open between generations.

The comedic writing is perfect, and Keenan Wynn is great as usual. I've loved Alan Mowbray since I saw him in "My Darling Clementine"! This is a great movie to lighten your spirit during these ugly days under biden's regime!
I borrowed my brother's DVD collection, 50 movies by Timeline, got to 1 hour 32 and as soon as I heard 'psychiatrist ', the DVD froze. Tried to restore it, resigned to never knowing the outcome. Assumed Kirk and Larraine would reconnect and Keenan would marry the landlady. Thank God for UA-cam.
This was full of wonderful character actors....Florence Bates...the southern guy from( More the Merrier)...the beer drinking secretary.is hilarious( did a funny role in DVDYKE)....fun movie....havent seen it years.....still funny......
I remember my mother going to the doctor dressed in the fancy clothes that she went out on ‘date night’ Saturday with my father. They dressed like that for ‘regular doings’ all their life.
@@kathykonkle1097 good point...she still looked kind of old here considering Beverly Hillbillies was filmed in the mid to late 60s i believe...an this was filmed in '48
They have her in the same type of character. Try putting her in an evening gown and makeup and the alluring role of a seductress and see how that turns out.
The actress playing Mrs Reid was in Rebecca with Joan Fontaine and Lawrence Olivier. I also saw her in an old flick last week but can't remember the it's amazing how little she's changed
Seeing a woman throw away a great opportunity because of fear her delicate husband's feelings and ego would be hurt, brings back memories as a girl of the 1950's-60's. Women always telling me that I shouldn't make better grades than the boys. A guy I dated got miffed because I got a higher score when we went bowling. Asked why I didn't let him win. Lost respect for him. Thankfully Mrs. Waterbury wised up and went ahead with her book.

Cute comedy, an icon of that era full of classic craftmanship there buddy!! lrene Ryan esp. cute and endearing the way she played her part, ha ha, like a lil kid. Gail Robins! Now that's what I call "And God created WOMAN!" I'll be her Adam any time, with vital enthusiasm! Kirk Douglas, the leader of Typical Son's of Bitches as usual in his part. One of my Boys there! Love him! "Dawn's Yearning" "Beyond Tomorrow" "Time Without Wings" Titles such of these books from many yesterdays ago were so interesting and evocative to just look at and wonder on. Fiction writers now seem not to have that certain wondrous Something to title their books in similar fashion. Oh well. Call me a sentimental slob. I ain't ashamed.
This movie is about writers and the age old battle of the sexes. The specific question in this film is, who is the best romance writer, the man or the woman. The battle continues eternally. Romance novels world wide, sell more books than any other genre.

Kirk's wife played by Laraine Day. She married Leo Durocher in 1948, divorced 1960. She was in a lot of "Dr. Kildare" movies. Info says she was a Mormon from Utah. Irene Ryan was hardly young, 45 or 46. 14 years older than Kirk.
Kirk Douglas was a great man and wonderful man as far as I know there wasn’t any scandal about him and when it came to the witch hunt circa 1959 with that bastard Charles McArthur he stood by his friends like Dalton Trumbull, I hope I spelled it correctly.
LOL..."great man and wonderful man"...you been living under a rock? Kirk Douglas was a good actor, but he also (allegedly) raped Natalie Wood when she was a teenager. He also (allegedly) may have been involved in the murder of a bit actress who appeared in one of his movies. Even if he didn't do either of those things, he was by his own admission pretty crappy to women. Stop believing all the gloss peddled by the media and Hollywood machine. (Nice of you to stand up for the communist Trumbo though.)
Is it my imagination or does Larraine Day's hair keep changing colour? In the hallway scenes she's a mid blonde then in the longer scenes with Kirk she seems to be platinum!
Humorous, good acting, but was sorry to see how it ended. She deserved an honest, faithful, appreciative man. Her husband had none of those qualities, and was totally untrustworthy.
So funny....perhaps I’ve watched so many old Hollywood movies now that I have an eye for movie sets and backgrounds but some of them made me laugh also. Great cast though and I loved it when the cleaner broke out in song. Is that Granny from Beverley Hillbillies ?
The ‘male baker’ looks like my mother making bread in the ‘50s. She wasn’t the greatest cook, I for some reason she was trying to make bread. My memory is running through a room and catching my mom slapping the gloppy bread though back in in and out of the pan like she was needing it only she need to put more flour in it to do that. I remember thinking I will never make bread when I grow up …ha ha Ha ….when we grew up my sister said “what in the world was mom doing with that bread dough?”
Probably one of the funniest first 20 minutes of any movie. Keenan Wynn has more one liners in that time than in most movies.
I agree‼️
