- Portrays a man who has a good job, a nice house, and a family but who is bored with his humdrum life. He looks for excitement and becomes involved in stolen goods, adultery, and murder, thus risking his job and marriage. This public domain film is based on Jay Dratler's novel "The Pitfall."
There's an intangible human quality to a lot of these old black and whiters that not all of the machine gun wielding robots, fiery explosions or orgies of CGI can put back on the screen no matter what excesses they go to.
A good movie and a first-rate cast. Did anyone notice that Raymond Burr hardly ever blinks? His vacant, zombie-like stare intensifies his unsavory character.
How caring & thoughtful of someone to care about the deaf & Audibly Inpaired to put up subtitles-I haven't seen this before. Thank You.
Glad this is on UA-cam, Netflix doesn't have it. Raymond Burr made a great heavy before Perry Mason made him a good guy.
Posters like you fill a good need for us film buffs. This is a forgotten classic that even Netflix doesn't have in its collection. Thank you for posting this.
United Artists was started by a group of Hollywood writers and actors, not business people; that's why this film is notable. It shows that the talent can dis-intermediate the money holders, and still produce something beautiful.
United Artists was founded by 'Artists' who cared more about aesthetics than about profits.
RIP Lizbeth Scott, one of the unsung Queens of Noir ! I've only noticed now that she died Jan 31st 2015, of course the Belgian media didn't talk about it. She reached a nice age, having been born in 1922. Great actress, strange voice, I loved her appearing together with that other great Noir actor, "oily" Dan Duryea. Before Angela Dickinson came around, nobody could act as greedy as la Scott !
I am going to have to look up Lisabeth Scott now. I like to keep up on actresses+actors what other films done so fourth.
David Wess The one you certainly should see is Too late for tears, which isn't difficult to find. And of course Dead reckoning.

Thoroughly enjoyed this piece of superb cinema. I have not heard such sharp tight screen lines as this for a long time. Next to perfect acting for each character, even down to the desk sergeant. Can't speak highly enough of it, and my hope is that the film gets restored in a laboratory to its former Noir glory.
Terrific movie. Powell perfectly suited for his role. Excellent support acting, great script, taut direction. What a find. Thanks for posting this gem.
Classic Film Noir. The movies of the 1940s had such a great look.
what's so interesting about this thriller is how it's almost constantly whispered
nobody raising their voice in all the high drama. Never seen a film quite like it
for a thriller. But leave it to De Toth for an unusual and realistic approach.
So nice to keep these classics alive and viewable here- I love these great movies and the quality and honesty of the actors
ANY Dick Powell movie is a good one. This one is no exception.
Andre de Toth was a curious director along with being a fine one. He was a real
maverick. Never WANTED to go big budget, just low rent noirs and keep all
the control. This shows the result of that obsession, pure cinema.
WOW! What a blockbuster of a movie! Dick Powell and Lizabeth Scott! A tense thriller that really holds your attention. And what about that pre Perry Mason Raymond Burr? As cold blooded a villain as ever existed. An over used cliche but oh how appropriate..."They don't make 'em like this any more! Thank you for uploading it!
I had trouble clicking the start button I was so excited to see my three favorite stars together in one movie!! lol
Thank you for posting this obscure gem! Raymond Burr as the "gruesome" lecheous creep was stellar! The movie is a cross between ""Double Indeminity," and "Quicksand!"
+dcmpnad I found Lizabeth Scott in Too Late for Tears. Loved her acting -- had to see more. Thanks for uploading under her name so I could find more of her films. Now I shall sit back and enjoy!!
thanks, this was a very good, suspenseful film. Can't believe I never heard of it. Dick Powell was really good in this tense drama, which surprised me in a good way. Good acting by all.
That sharp company car, a 48 Studebaker Commander sure is light years ahead of that tall boxy 48 Ford convertible, makes it look like last year's tractor.
This is a very fine well-done movie.
I just finished watching it. What a great movie. I'm not saying a word. No spoilers, here !!!
Thank you for uploading this excellent film it is much appreciated. Xxx
Thank you for uploading these great films even with caption now, fantastic, even tough I am a big special effect science fiction and fantasy fan I still love to watch one of the oldies sometimes, reminds me of a different time, I am 65!
Great story line, acting, dialogue, music. Thank you for uploading this film.
Thanks for posting, although I always thought this was a so-so film. Do love these kind of classics though. Burr could sure play a sleazy villain.
Good little film. Tight script, fine acting and building suspense.
Lisabeth Scott sounds like June Allyson.
I saw this on Turner Classic Movies, it makes a great double feature with "Timetable", both revolve around insurance schemes
Thanks for a great mystery, chocked full of stars! Great post!we
Terrific movie = thanks so much!
Thank you!
Thx. For loading. Very good movie.
Enjoyed this a 2nd time, looking forward to a 3rd, 4th...
Recently watched this largely forgotten gem of a film noir from 1948. A bored insurance agent, played by Dick Powell, follows a victimized beauty (Lizabeth Scott) down dark alleys.
The Let’s-Pretend-It’s-All-Fine suburban values of the 1950s collide with the urban postwar despair of the 1940s. With Jane Wyatt starring as his wife, it’s Father Knows Best Doesn’t Know What He’s Getting Into.
Thanks for posting, I enjoy the movie.
Thank you very much, a wel acted movie by the cast
Love watching the movie, but when Sue said she would burn the comic books, I couldn't help but let out a bloodcurdling scream.
yeah same hear it's value now is thou the ruff. 1'st age comics. after grading DAMN
Lizabeth Scott is amazing in this but Raymond Burr gets a grand champion medal for playing as despicable of a bastard as any ever portrayed in film.
Burr was usually the baddie, and then he became Perry Mason and Ironside.
What's his hat stuck on with during the boat ride? Not superglue as it hadn't been invented back then.
He knowingly committed adultery; she unwittingly did so. On top of that, she had a dangerous stalker. She is the character who deserves mercy.
Exceptional movie!
Thankou very much, Mare.
...and he never loses his hat!
I like the two little musical notes that show up during interludes... but it doesnt give much feel for the music... maybe it should be captioned like it sounds.... DUNH DUNH DUNH DUNH DEEEE WOOOOOOOOO DOO DOO DOO DEEEE WOOOOOOO DUNH DUNH DUNH DUUNNNNNNNHHHHHH
Thank you 👍🏻
Jane Wyatt - loved her in this - she went on to be the mother in "Father Knows Best" with Robert Young.
Really Perry Mason.....he makes a great bad guy.....i almost didn't wtch this one...alot of twists and turns.
WHAT A GREAT MOVIE!!!!!
good movie thanks
I'm a big fan of Scott, and a scene @ 26:43 explains all :)
Those are not subtitles, they are CAPTIONS- meant to help people with hearing impairments. What planet are you living on?
Who could cheat on Jane Wyatt? Lol.
His wife seems so much more attractive to me and awfully sweet, but I guess when you're in a rut it's more about different and new.
Good acting --Scott is good and Powell also
Great movie. I enjoyed it.
enjoyed film immensely!
Good stuff.
he had a good wife.
Great movie
I love Mona, I want a woman like that :) Thanks for the movie :)
+Udom Simon that's what got him in trouble.
André de Toth, directed by. Not forgotten, just in the public domain!
Dick Powell was always an under-rated actor and he's well cast here in an Everyman role as an insurance investigator who strays and falls for Lizabeth Scott with dire results almost ruining his marriage to Jane Wyatt.
Pretty good except the ending seemed rather abrupt!
INTELLIGENTLY DONE DESPITE THE TOUGH TALK
great
good
I am sure we all going to say th@ Raymond Burr & Dick Powell did a tango aplos so as Lisabeth Scott. all though we wouldn't have a heck of a film with out the director + writer's.
May I add nice tiger wood door's n the office. Over all good film.
Felt sorry for the blond girl-in those days a single woman had no Authority or Rights-with the police about 'stalking bulling blackmailing' men, the husband did the right thing nobel dutifully, but I really thought he was gonna come to the blondes defence & not let her be dropped in it or be alone
(*mild spoiler) Johnny can't keep his snake in it's cage, get's his ass in deep kimchee, and then rats himself out? WTH were you thinking, Johnny!!! However, this was a good ole film-noir flick worth checking out. Thanks for posting.
Great post-war AI hard at work..
Certain aspects of this remind me of Fatal Attraction
Liz!-Misha Allport-Fortaleza, Brasil
Too many holes in this film. A jailbird, has to be a nut case, to believe a story from a guy like Mac. He has no evidence, yet carries a gun. That would be back in the cage for 10 yrs.
Anyhow, giant thank you!
Why the English subtitles???
..lol..lol..blond home-wrecking temptress at 26:45.....lol..lol..
Lousy ending ! What happened to Perry Mason ? Did he die ? What happened to Mona ?
What a good movie. Raymond Burr was some creep!
