    Today we will be visiting Childish Gambino first studio album Camp. It's almost been a decade since this album first came out. It's been about 5 years since i've listened to it. Childish Gambino has had much success with with his music. With Critically acclaimed albums like Because the Internet, Awaken my love and songs like This is America. I thought it would be fun to look back on an album no one really talks about nowadays...
    THIS IS MY OPINION!
    Also, it would mean a lot if you shared this video, liked it, subscribe if you haven't and left a comment! I put a lot of work into this one. I'm going to keep experimenting with editing. More claymations? who knows haha
    LET ME KNOW IF WE SHOULD DO A GIVEAWAY!?

    If you were black and nerdy-this album was your representation. The first time I was like...somebody gets me. The misogyny could also just be the result of being young and black, as the black community👀 especially black men still are struggling to not be that way. Camp was a great timepiece and the fact that it does have that cringe to it is awesome. It's perfect for Donald himself to reflect on why he thought the way he thought and seeing how he has grown. He probably would agree with you lol.

    Childish Gambino was the first artist I ever listened to thoroughly. I didn't question any weird shit that came out his mouth cuz i thought like that(Im not crazy). I too was a nerdy black kid who was an outcast to other black kids. Who had crushes on asian woman(lol still do). And thought that i wasn't black enough. It really spoke to me cuz i related to him too hard. I may not be exactly how I was in middle school but Im happy I still got a track that can take me back to a relatable past. Its hard to type out what I really want to say, but the album Camp really put me in a comfortable space and made me accept myself, cuz i really thought i was alone. And Childish Gambino gave me a new light and I learned to grow up. So I guess, Im the one who got off the Bus.

    Man. I didn’t even think twice about some of those lyrics. This man really sat down, wrote that stuff out, went to the studio thinking “this is it” 😅. Perhaps it’s probably because how it was packaged overall that it didn’t faze me, at least not at the time. Donald was a such character back then, but his old stuff still resonates with me to this day. It was just so raw, but honest that I found it very commendable. Anyways, this video was great stuff. Looking forward to seeing what else you put. out

      Dude!! I really appreciate you checking this out. Yeah, I totally get that. I do wish I would’ve touched on that a little bit more! I like introspective rap, so Camp is little short of a masterpiece to me. In that last track, he said something about how nobody could turn around and tell people something if he tells it first. That bus he was still on represented all his attachments and insecurities. And that's what the album does: expose all his flaws in a way that's not supposed to completely make sense because it's unfiltered. He's not a cool guy crafting carefully planned out stories. So even if it is a bit cringey, it comes from somewhere that is Donald Glover. I think all the critics reacting to this expect something more cohesive, virtuous, ... manufactured. But it's not that kind of album. It's a reflection of his messed up psychology, and I like how it's messy.

    l had a similar experience revisiting this album a few years ago. Camp was the soundtrack to my freshman year in college and really got my into rap and hip-hop as a whole. It makes you feel like you have a friend as an outsider/geek/nerd. But as I've moved around and grown up in life, it begins to leave a sour taste whereas his other projects continue to age like wine.

He never got off the bus - hes still afraid of all the things that hurt him their, mainly being seen and mocked so hes doing it preemptively revealing and mocking the cringiest parts of himself

    I respect your opinion on this record I got into Gambino my 10th grade year of high school back in 2015 and he was the first artist I thoroughly listened to I really appreciated how he was so honest and vulnerable on Camp some of the things he was talking about was relatable to me in a way his albums and mixtapes such as Cul-de-sac, ep, camp, because the internet, and the kauai ep really got me through tough times in high school because I felt alone at times and felt like I didn't fit in. Camp will always be my favorite album by him because he put so much emotion and passion into it I do appreciate how he has grown throughout each album and how much of an impact his music has had on me tracks that really stood out to me were all the shine and letter home because of the emotion and passion he had in both songs and the transitions between both of them, that power because of the story at the end, and outside because of the beautiful harmony and vocals that were on it but the whole album to me is just great it does has it's flaws but still a great project I know this whole album by heart that's just how much I love it.

  • @tajsu7109
    @tajsu7109 3 роки тому +6

    pre-BTI gambino was always about making witty lines which makes unlike most of earlier mixtapes (like in Sicko Boi, I love Love is Crazy due to its chorus but its verses are trash). However, after culdesac he kind of mastered it and made them more tolerable in ep and camp.
    Also Hot Take: EP is the most underrated gambino project.

    • @UGGMUGG
      @UGGMUGG  3 роки тому +2

      I agree with that Hot Take. I’ve seen the EP record at my record shop a few times. I might get it. Because like I said I don’t listen to my Camp record much. But, I think I would listen to the EP more.
      Yeah, I also feel the same way with his old projects. Sick boi is an odd listen. I think it’s cool that he tried something new like masking his voice and making it sound like he’s sick. The only problem with that is it doesn’t sound that good.

      @@UGGMUGG I'm curious if you think Poindexter's best songs or Culdesac is worth revisiting? Even the "I Am Just A Rapper" tapes? That Goth Star flip, Almost There is still the 2nd best Sounds Like a Love Song sample behind Song Cry (yes it was better than Drake's even if he added MJ in there too). And Starlight is still a spazz out moment for Donald lyrically. He basically was in peak Wayne clone form, and he tried to channel more Kanye on Culdesac. I think Culdesac is definitely in his top5 projects.
      P.S. Totally agree that Letter Home is a peak on CAMP. It in essence is a sequel to "I'm Alright" and the trilogy pretty much evolved in "U Don't Have to Call". Those 3 songs together make one of the best suites. First 2 songs are also the only 2 songs in his catalog that are under 2 minutes if i'm remembering correctly. And it pretty much flows from rapping to singing and ending with rapping Like his career? Added up together you get roughly the length of "U Don't Have to Call". Plus he mentions the title in "Letter Home". It's real time growth with him manically writing screenplays, jokes, and raps at 4am, to writing a letter to a girl he only because his mother asked him to and eventually evolves into almost a flow of prose like the 2014 "A Life in the Day of..." stripper references, existentialism, legacy and all. The same mode that Andre 3000, Earl, Kendrick, Lupe can tap into. The subtle version of Drake's AM/PM/Freestyle songs I suppose. That undercover through line Donald used to have loosely really turned into actual solid storylines Post-That Power. I guess like how "You___Me" series, or how "Bonfire" kinda grew from "So Much Better"? Sad he won't acknowledge some of these songs anymore live. But it's fun to see how he practiced in real time. But with moments like RETRO [Rough] it shows he sees potential in a few of em..
      Apologize for my PS being longer than tha message .Great video.

    Honestly all gamblino albums aren’t talked about enough other than awaken my love. Yeah he has hits but his core fan base is usually only where the music ends up

    im immune to cringe. maybe ive just sat with the album so long i see it as the norm. the album is a masterpiece. i think it does what its supposed to do. lets all the corny bars out in one big self indulgent barrage so he never has to return to that persona again and can truly have his metamorphosis into adulthood.
    he kind of took lil wayne mixtape era, drake, kid cudi and kanye and put it into one big introspective package. he let it be hated and memed on. it had to exist. on a personal level i like to compare it to how Tyler the Creator views 'in my mind' as a special album to him when no one else seemed to 'get it' at the time. because it wasnt 'for' them.
    a lot of comments here seem to follow this trend but he also helped me grow up as the estranged black kid and let out my weird and expressive nature, definitely would compare it to what kid cudi was doing just a couple years in the future - straight up just being yourself and admitting your weird obsessions and punchlines on record to be judged by the masses for years to come, but intentionally using the judgement to force an evolution on yourself so you can become the spirituality inclined donald we all know now.

      I want to! But, the record is super beat up looking at it. I had it get some water damage a while back sadly :/ Still works perfectly fine though. I think if I did a give away I’d like for the records to be brand new! If you want the one seen in this video no joke I’ll mail it to you haha 😂

    4:44 too dismissive, not that hard to understand. Didn’t get off the bus is a mindset. From a kid until 2011/12. Because the internet he finally gets “off the bus”. Not that complicated
