    He is so gentle, patient, and non-judgmental. You can tell by the way he talks about people and society (and handles Charlemagne thinking he's right about everything), that he doesn't see himself as better than anyone, and truly listens and values what other's say. Not to mention, he does all of that while being one of the most intelligent and talented people in our generation. 6 years later and most of what he's saying would still be a revelation to the majority.

    Donald Glover is having a totally different conversation that went over everyone's head in the room. Charlemagne, in general, is basic. Donald Glover is explaining that we create a culture that someone else owns. Im happy that Donald Glover is firmly rooted in his ideas, so that he can help folks like Charlemagne not have to think about heavy topics. Not all black folk have to understand it but we still need to carry them along. Great convo!

    • @FailParty
      @FailParty 5 років тому +21

      Andrew, if you think Glover grew up on a silver spoon and doesnt know what hes talking about and you want to discredit his personal experience and struggle and belittle his attempt to have the mass acknowledge and remember theres a fucking problem. Then youre part of the problem. Take your own damn shades off or gtfo the conversation. Go to Starbucks, enjoy yourself in your fantasy world.
      Hes not belittling anything, hes celebrating it and speaking out about the atrocity that there is a glass ceiling on theyre ability to own it, because the majority in power is not theyre color. It happens everyday and the mass is numb to it or biased, and thats the bs hes not down for. The fact that white guy and black guy can walk into Starbucks or some shit looking like hobos and one is a hipster and the other might be trouble, or lost, or both.

      This interview was like 5 years ago he doesn’t even think like this anymore. I’m pretty sure he thought like that because being from the South everyone only hung around people that were the same race as themselves and didn’t even really respected people of other races. That’s why in the South there’s white churches black churches and hispanic churches there are no Churches for everyone so to say. Same with schools there’s black schools white schools and hispanic schools. It’s not segregated to the point where you can’t be white and go to a black church or black school but if you do they will treat you like shit for being white. Same applies to if you’re black and you go to a white school they will treat you like shit for being black. Growing up in the Deep South is really the same as being in pre segregation America. The only difference is they are integrated but they will remind you that you aren’t the same race as they are and treat you like garbage for it.

    Most black people grow up in predominantly black cultures where we critique each others hair, teeth, clothes etc.
    For instance: "Damn man you need a shape up" - Donald Glover has no shape up at ALL, just his natural hair line
    "You need to cut that shit off "(in reference to freeform locks) - Donald lets his hair grow naturally
    "You got a hole in your clothes" (blacks so eager to rip at each other for trivial shit) - Donald owns his appearance and is not afraid to dress real. We all have flaws and imperfections
    This is one of the most free black men you will ever see and is becoming a legend through hard work. Stay you Gambino. I am working to have this same freedom, but you need money and ways to generate lots of money. Also, you can't be sensitive to what others say. Just be yourself.

      @Shannon J. Brooks do you not see a problem with the attitude? You're literally becoming what you hate.
      Do you think white supremacy is bad because it's wrong to believe a race is superior? Or do you think it's bad because "it's not us"??
      Let's say black people were the ethnic majority of USA, and had the "power" in the system. Going around saying "we are superior"? Do you not see a problem with this?
      "I'm better than you because of my race".
      Dark times we are entering if people are thinking like this? Becoming exactly what we swore to destroy. Insane.

    • @KudaMan
      @KudaMan 3 роки тому +2

      @@CraigFisherman I agree, but I think you kind of misinterpreted Charlemagne. To my understanding he’s basically saying we need to see ourselves as kings and queens as a way to encourage ourselves and instill confidence, to see ourselves as descendants of royalty that are kind of ordained to be great in the world. It’s to get you to see yourself as special, and then maybe you’ll start acting like it and maybe you’ll actually end up someone special bc you fulfilled your self prophecy. It’s a lot less malicious than saying “we are black, thus we are innately better than whites”, that’s the bad stuff that terry crews was talking about. The whole “we are black and thus have more moral authority of over whites bc their ancestors did horrible things to us and whites have had their time to shine”. All in all, I think it’s tricky bc I think when a black person says “we should see ourselves as superior” it should really mean “you should see yourself as superior”. Like there should be no instances where you are baselessly vouching for other black people and saying they are superior just bc they are black and a part of your “we”...that’s wrong.

      what they mean is the perceived mentality that black Americans dont speak like that and genuine shock in people
      i dont think he meant it to be taken literally.
      for example if you come to my country in Africa and speak one of our languages fluently i will definitely be effin surprised and tell that to you.
      however in US from what i used to see in the early days, black American have a certain way of talking and always cursing... but tv came along and lots of movies later i saw different side of it and not all African Americans come from the ghetto.
      so anyways i was just sharing my experience at how i also learned many years ago that they could speak fluently too and how i understand what that statement means however i think alot of the shock and surprise should have been gone now.

    I don’t see how he doesn’t see what gambino is saying about power😂 money, positions, decisions and things black people are prevented from having control over. We can influence the world and still won’t get the check for it which is major.

    • @nlawson2004

      Glover is basically saying we’re not at the top of the pyramid, we’re not the gatekeepers and decision makers determining who gets let in and who gets the big piece of the pie. For instance, there’s the NBA, with million dollar athletes and endorsements, but then there's the team’s owner, and high level investors and the media conglomerates that make billions and are determining when, where, how, they handle their property. Glover is just saying we as black people should be aware of and try to aim for the top of the pyramid, otherwise we’ll always be susceptible to those at the top and at every other level throughout society, including the perpetual cop that‘s out to diminish and end you for no real reason other than your skin color.

      This is actually one of the few times I actually AGREE with Charlemagne. IMO black people ought to stop walking around with a frame of mind of inferiority and envy. And, I think he's right in that the media programs us to think of ourselves as inferior regardless of whether we are or are not. And, I'd say that many black people are way too desperate for gaining respect, privilege, and power from white people when we really don't need anything from them at all. *Just go out there and do you, and don't be so obsessed with what other people think of you. You do not need any validation from society for any greatness you achieve. Stop looking for other people's approval.*

This also allows me to understand and defend others belief whom I don’t necessarily agree with. "I'm not going to explain my art, it's supposed to be a conversation" damn, reminds me of when he barely said anything when people were interviewing him about This is America

  • @twill5361

    He said in this interview, he does not explain his art. Its only for topic of conversation. Therefore we will never know the true meaning of his view of This is America.

      T Will This was a really cheap clickbait move. If you really think about it. Why would Donald (who's already busy as hell) decide to do a full-on, sit down, live interview, mere days into release of such a controversial (and mega trending) music video. Particularly the breakfast club; where Charlamagne and Angela are going to bombard him with a million questions about it.
      Donald is a smart dude. Possibly a genius. He knows it's too fresh on our minds to talk about it right now. So he's just sitting back and letting the art+controversy do the talking. Then when the album is about to drop, maybe he'll embark on a mini press tour (of which the BC will likely be passed over) He knows what he's doing.

      People who worked on the video have given interviews about it if you're curious. Ibra Ake went into depth about the video as has the choreographer. Ibra is the nigerian guy gambino refers to in this video btw. So his takes are probably similar to binos ideas

    The story at 20:49 makes everything else he says about racism, heartbreaking and true. Yet, he is now a profoundly important public figure. I think he'll look back and see that people can rise up, but no one can't change everyone.

    I love this man 🙌🏼👏🏼 He's 100% correct about everything he's preaching!! I commend him for talking about it as well. He's very brave & right in the fact that dissecting the topic & talking about it in it's raw, ugly form, his life could be at risk. Polynesian's feel the same way, to be honest. Especially Hawaiians. Kanaka Maoli. This world is heartbreaking & I pray my son's generation will be better regarding race issues 🤍🙏🏼 Can't believe this was 3yrs ago & since then we've had a revolution & slight reform. We still have a long way to go.
