They’d been dating since the beginning of grade seven. They danced to this song and every single one of us jaded teenage Gen X’ers were crying our eyes out! LYRICS Go on and close the curtains 'Cause all we need is candlelight You and me, and a bottle of wine To hold you tonight (oh) Well we know I'm going away And how I wish, I wish it weren't so So take this wine and drink with me And let's delay our misery Save tonight and fight the break of dawn Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone Save tonight and fight the break of dawn Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone There's a log on the fire And it burns like me for you Tomorrow comes with one desire To take me away (oh it's true) It ain't easy to say goodbye Darlin' please, don't start to cry 'Cause girl you know I've got to go (oh) And Lord I wish it wasn't so Save tonight and fight the break of dawn Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone Save tonight and fight the break of dawn Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone Tomorrow comes to take me away I wish that I, that I could stay But girl you know I've got to go (oh) And Lord I wish wasn't so Save tonight and fight the break of dawn Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone Save tonight and fight the break of dawn Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone Save tonight and fight the break of dawn Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone Save tonight and fight the break of dawn Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone Tomorrow I'll be gone Tomorrow I'll be gone
This song is what I think of when I think of that post 90s, pre-9/11 feeling. That brief moment in 2000 and the first part of 2001 when the 2000s were still a happy continuation of the 90s. It's like the 90s are saying farewell in their own sad, yet optimistic way. Kind of like spending one more happy, carefree night with a charismatic loved one before they die.
My grandma showed me this song, she is now struggling for her life after a nursing home worker transmitted COVID to her. She has pulmonary fibrosis as a result and will likely pass soon. I miss you grandma, please don't let go. I love you.

The world and people can be cruel, but some of us old internet monsters are still people, never be afraid to vent. My thoughts are with you and I wish you all well. I am old enough to have lost all my Grands long ago, I miss them still, but they are a part of my heart and who I am. Just be sure (if it has to happen) to let her go in peace, then grieve. I have seen people try to hang on because their family can't let go, and it hurts everyone more. Love.
Yeah, so many songs have so many memories for me, some from high school, some from college, some from university. This was out during my placement year at Uni. I grew up in such a strict environment we werent allowed to listen to music or watch movies. I would sneak downstairs at midnight when my parents were sleep and watch music videos with my sister all night. I miss the 90s
Your comment made me smile! I was raised by strict Christian grandparents. I remember falling asleep at night and taping my favorite songs in secrecy. It's so funny to remember how much trouble I knew I would be in if I got "busted"... And music was actually TAME back then compared to mainstream music these days... Good times :)
Oh my god, my story is very similar. We were "CHRISTIAN MUSIC ONLY" and had little privacy. I used to record the songs of this year span on a tape player, it felt like I was listening to Radio Free America from the eastern end of the Berlin Wall. I will love this song forever.
It's so easy to forget how incredibly original this Summer of '98 masterpiece is! In one song, Eagle-Eye Cherry cleverly incorporates music stylings from the 70's, 80's and 90's, doesn't over do the hook, and keeps you wanting more. The video is also excellent, and prophetic for news stories and discussions people would be having 20 years later! This song deserves to be played a lot more.
Graduated from high school in 1998. This song....helped me push the limits of the Summer as I left all I once knew and slowly transitioned through the threshold into college. Road tripping with my oldest friend and this song came on and, if you’ve ever shared “an unspoken moment”, you know. If was weird. It was...part of the reason why I believe coincidence is the RANDOM giving you a Gold Star and saying, “Yes....but as you move through this threshold, what limits are there? Or are there really any limits?” Believe what you want, only reason I’m writing this is had magical past few days, and I still can’t explain what’s going on, but despite the ego and hate in these comments, sometimes I’ve found things that inspired me, so my purpose is to say that if you ever get the chance to share a certain song with a friend that you would die for, that you love unconditionally, to share a True Moment of Beauty and HOPE for the future, is the very reason why I keeping doing what I’m doing. Hope you can share a song and a moment with someone today. Have faith. “I feel you”...by this new band, Depeche Mode,...you should try it. Hope this makes someone smile. This post did. Thank you.
Oh wow, I have to disagree here. I love this song as a comfort song, but to call it a masterpiece is just insane in my opinion. It is literally just one of the most used 4 chord loops, a very simple melody with little vocal dynamics, quite repetitive lyrics, and a super easy guitar solo. It works as a pop song because it is incredibly simple and enjoyable, but I feel like it should take a lot more for something to be described as a masterpiece.
@@noone-ld7pt people relate but clear channel decided what was and wasn't a masterpiece in those days, not the people in most cases. What ever got funder by the NWO got played and famous regardless of talent or morals.

This is one of the deepest song ever (for me). It was only when my grandfather died that I realised the lyrics. Of course it's a classic, but listening to it and thinking about someone you loved and the person has died ... It brings tears. And I love the clip, it's like you keep seeing the person everywhere, in everyone. How can this be so chilly and deep, lyrics and videoclip? Absolutely love it.

Those were the days weren't they? Better times I say. Now its madness and I only fear its going to get worse. Not trying to be funny. I truly cherish the 90s. It was the last great decade. Every decade since has gotten progressively worse.
Agreed. Today's chart music is so soulless & shallow, generic dance beat blah blah, most of the music sounds like it could be from the same album! 90s- choose from loads of different genre's in the charts!
@@markimusmaximus7870 yes. I listen to just about every genre pre 2000s. I can’t stand rap today. R&B and hip hop are just as bad as pop now. Pop is horrible today. What happened to alternative? I'm 36. Used to listen to this since years. One of the best tracks ever! Just yesterday I binge watched this series ONE DAY. They played this track in one of the episodes. Made me listen to it again now and makes me think about the show. Heartbreaking (not going to spoil it for anyone who hasn't watched that show)
This brings up so many memories. I was just a kid when we got cable TV and had MTV there. While other kids were watching cartoons, I would be watching MTV instead non-stop, discovered so many awesome tracks. I clearly remember when this one came out in October 1997 (I was 8 at the time), they would play it like 20 times a day and I loved the music and the video, even though I hardly understood a word since English wasn't my main language and I basically learned English through MTV. Good times... And now all of a sudden I remembered this song before going to sleep and it's like I traveled through time. Music is the only time machine we have.

+Maialeen well the music now is "my generation's" music (I'm 16 at the moment) and I don't really like most of it ( there are of course some songs I do like) popular music really changed a lot and not for the better if you ask me especially the hits I often just think are horrible
This is how I see things in life. Most times we don't appreciate all the music we hear during the time it was released unless you like the music already. Then maybe 7 to 15 years later when you hear it again a bunch of memories flood your mind. Some are happiness, sadness and in-between. Those are the moments when your appreciation is turned on like a switch. And that's what am going through right now as am typing this. I will probably see this message again of mine one day in the future and reflect all over again about where and were and why I was typing all this.
I feel like everything you've said just took the words right out of my mouth. I heard this song a million times growing up in my early teen years and never appreciated it matter fact, I almost hated this song and now that I'm in my mid 30's, listening to this song brings back soo many memories of growing up and all the ups and down's I went through. I grew up listening to Hip Hop and Jazz so I never cared for this but, now I appreciate and love this song so much and I'm going through this same experience with music from the past all the time now. I've always wondered how many other people feel out there feel the same way about these types of things. Cheers to you , wherever you're bro.
As a kid I moved away from my family's ranch to the inner city... this is the song that came on the radio as we were backing out of the drive way.. I'll never forget my little eyes welling up.

Approach to sound mixing is lighter than today.

LYRICS
Go on and close the curtains
'Cause all we need is candlelight
You and me, and a bottle of wine
To hold you tonight (oh)
Well we know I'm going away
And how I wish, I wish it weren't so
So take this wine and drink with me
And let's delay our misery
Save tonight and fight the break of dawn
Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone
Save tonight and fight the break of dawn
Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone
There's a log on the fire
And it burns like me for you
Tomorrow comes with one desire
To take me away (oh it's true)
It ain't easy to say goodbye
Darlin' please, don't start to cry
'Cause girl you know I've got to go (oh)
And Lord I wish it wasn't so
Save tonight and fight the break of dawn
Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone
Save tonight and fight the break of dawn
Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone
Tomorrow comes to take me away
I wish that I, that I could stay
But girl you know I've got to go (oh)
And Lord I wish wasn't so
Save tonight and fight the break of dawn
Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone
Save tonight and fight the break of dawn
Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone
Save tonight and fight the break of dawn
Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone
Save tonight and fight the break of dawn
Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone
Tomorrow I'll be gone
Tomorrow I'll be gone
Dope
Thanks

I was 12 years old… this came on MTV … I’m so grateful for such a masterpiece.
EXACTLY…. and I’m still here listening with you-just gets better w/time!
Right!!!🥰
I was 11
Same (maybe 11) - UK Radio rinsed it which was nice.
I was 28!
I love you.
@dissident ! thank you for the empathy. eat meat and sugar but please, don't be a jerk
He is right plant based diets are like a miracle the medical field has not caught up to it yet but it can be like a miracle. I recommend that and lots of faith and prayer 🙏
@@THETF2PREACHER If you want medical 'miracles' you should know that intercessional prayers (if the person knows they are being prayed for) have a negative effect on recovery rates.
Love.
Sorry to hear that. What an awesome Grandma to show you this song!!! She has great taste in music. 🙂
Damn I miss the 90's it makes me cry seriously. Does anyone feel the same out there?
90s were the best!
Yeah, so many songs have so many memories for me, some from high school, some from college, some from university. This was out during my placement year at Uni.
Seems each some is like a time stamp on the best decade of my life, from 13-23 (high school, college, university and first year in work, all in the space of 10 years!)
Also I realised 3 of my favourite songs were 1 hit wonders...
New Radicals - You get what you give
Spacehog - In the meantime
and this!
@@kps.77 yeah me too. It brings me so much memories. From high School . From an era where people were different , more connected as oppose to nowadays where people acting out like robot, and zombies style. You feel me?

This is what pop music used to be, melody, rhythm, deep soulful timbre, meaningful lyrics.
Now we have to put with Cardi B singing about her pussy #Trash

I just heard a haunting version of this in the end credits of True Detective season 4, episode 5. Every song they use is a wonderful fit for the mood of the season.
^^ this is what brought me here as well!! Was a good cover especially like you said for the tone of this season, but still doesn’t have anything on the OG version….
Shit
the songs absolutely do not fit the mood of the season lmao
The show was crap from the beginning. Billie Eilish for the opening theme of True Detective? 🤡
Brought me here too!!! I loved that song!!!
MYSTERYSUNZA Thats funny because MY strict upbringing was in a Muslim household. I guess regardless of where you're from, kids will be kids...
Oh my god, my story is very similar. We were "CHRISTIAN MUSIC ONLY" and had little privacy. I used to record the songs of this year span on a tape player, it felt like I was listening to Radio Free America from the eastern end of the Berlin Wall. I will love this song forever.
Andy Wolf lol, I did the tape player mix tape also haha. Glad I "rebelled" and listen to all this wonderful music
Yogaflame911 lol me too, would you let your kids listen to music? Or do you think they should have the enrichment of music.
Wow you got the ear and a half for music. Mastermind
What ever got funder by the NWO got played and famous regardless of talent or morals.
still they love the arts, these globalists so they have put out good art. The celebs are just morons in almost every case selling their souls to stay on top when most are washed up.
Never thought on it. Thank you for sharing.
It's not just the music that we seek in these older songs
But also the memories they unleash
So very true
This is it... the feelings you had when life was so much simpler. The entire Road Rash 64 soundtrack does that to me.
If only I had known just how good things were at the time, and how shit things would become.

Those were the days weren't they? Better times I say. Now its madness and I only fear its going to get worse. Not trying to be funny. I truly cherish the 90s. It was the last great decade. Every decade since has gotten progressively worse.
55, reminds of being with females and knowing when I leave I will probably never see them again
It’s almost non existent today and what there is of it, sucks. Rock is gone. There are only a few artists I listen to from 2000s on.

Timeless song. Glad I lived in a time to experience its release and experience over and over throughout my life.
They say a time machine can never be invented but I'd say this song comes close to taking you back to a better time.

Nah music started to suck harder Maialeen.. and millennials made everything suck more
+Maialeen well the music now is "my generation's" music (I'm 16 at the moment) and I don't really like most of it ( there are of course some songs I do like)
popular music really changed a lot and not for the better if you ask me
especially the hits I often just think are horrible
It's a shame we haven't heard more from Eagle Eye Cherry. This tune is a classic.
