  • Shoei GT Air Helmet Review
    www.revzilla.co...
    New for 2013, the Shoei GT Air is the newest addition to the Integrated Sunvisor collection from Shoei, joining the ranks of the Neotec and the new J-Cruise. The GT Air is purpose built for the touring rider who wants the creature comforts offered in the Neotec, but prefers a full face helmet. The GT Air uses the Shoei AIM shell to aerodynamically incorporate the sunvisor and the spoiler. The result is a sporty shape helmet that makes no compromise in outer shell or EPS liner to incorporate the internal sun visor. The GT Air will have 3 shell sizes and 4 EPS liners and is DOT rated only. The air flow of the GT Air is truly impressive and appropriately named. The over-sized top vent, dual channel EPS liner and large vent holes move an impressive amount of air over, creating a Mohawk of air over the head. With the dramatic increase in air, there is no increase in wind turbulence or noise. The new interior is more encompassing plush, and helps to better create surround the head. The GT Air also makes it easy for riders who use aftermarket bluetooth kits by positioning the sunvisor slide near the faceshield and even gives deep speaker cut-outs within the EPS liner. The GT Air will be offered in a variety of solid and graphic options.

    I bought this helmet about a note ago. The helmet is light weight and flows a ton of air. It is not as quite as I would like it to be for the price. The wide visor increases my ability to see the road. I ride an adventure bike in 85 degree weather and my head remains cool on long trips.

    I just bought a GT Air today and was working with the Shoei rep for our area. He told me the GT Air is a long oval. He measured my dome and it came out to be exactly that, a long oval. Never have I had a helmet that felt this good. I wore it for a good five hours and I am amazed that a helmet can be this comfortable and quiet. I'll never own a cheap lid again. I'm probably a Shoei customer for life. Can't recommend this helmet enough.

      It is a bit longer than their other helmets, but we still put it within the intermediate oval category. What really matters is that you got a great helmet that fits! -DrewZilla

    As a Neotec owner I think it's great Shoei now have a full face helmet with an internal sun visor! Can't wait to see what the GT Air is like when it hits the shops :)

    For noise, the Shoei Qwest or Shoei GT-Air are probably your best bet. The XR-1100 is more of a sport helmet, whereas the other two are touring focused. Generally speaking, touring type helmets are quieter. -CK

    As of right now, Shoei only offers clear in the CNS-1, the same shield used on the Neotec. There is an internal sun visor on the helmet that can be used on bright days. We know Shoei does plan on offering a smoke version at some point, be we do not have an ETA. ~Ali

    Thats true of just about any helmet vent to be honest. The airflow holes have to be large enough to actually give you decent airflow, and by nature are then big enough for small bugs. -CK

    57-58cm sounds like a MD based on their size chart, however, it depends on headshape as well. The GT-Air is intermediate oval, so a MD should be fine if it matches your headshape. -CK

    I've used my GT-Air helmet for one year. I love it. Especially the integrated sun visor, it's awesome.
    I had issues with pressure against my forehead after ~30 min, which I didn't feel during testing.
    I solved it by pushing on the styroform with my fingers. That made it perfect.

  • @RevZilla
    @RevZilla  11 років тому

    I think either would be a good option. Two other helmets that are specifically designed for un-faired (naked) bikes are the Shark Speed-R and the Arai Defiant. -CK

    Most helmets start out with snug cheekpads and liner out of the box. The cheekpads typically break in about 15%-20% over the first few weeks. -CK

  • @RevZilla
    @RevZilla  11 років тому

    They are such different helmets, it's tough to compare. The GT Air is slightly quieter, but it's definitely more of a touring helmet. The Schuberth SR-1 is a race helmet, and not specifically designed for street creature comforts. ~Ali

  • @RevZilla
    @RevZilla  11 років тому

    The GT-Air definitely has the latest in technology from Shoei, and that includes way more than just the internal visor. Venting, aerodynamics, noise, and comfort should all be a step up from the RF-1100. With that said, I just recently test rode the new Arai Defiant, and I think it has the GT-Air beat in the ventilation category. -CK

  • @RevZilla
    @RevZilla  11 років тому

    Shoei often produces slightly different models for different markets. Typically, Shoei will use D-Rings for helmets sold in the US, but ratchet systems for Europe and Asia. If you look on the Shoei site, it probably shows the ratchet, but if you checked the Shoei USA site, it would show D-Rings. ~Ali

    This helmet is more geared for an upright position to 3/4. If you ride in a full tuck, you might not get as much airflow. ~Ali

  • @psittacid
    @psittacid 11 років тому

    I contacted Shoei about that. Their response was that Snell does not test helmets with visors. They also said that they build the helmets to the same standards whether or not Snell will test it. My good experiences with Shoei seem to make this believable.

  • @RevZilla
    @RevZilla  11 років тому

    Where do you feel it is tight? If you are developing pressure points at the crown of the head, this is either the wrong size or the wrong shape, but if it is too plush at the cheeks, this will break in over time. -CK

  • @RevZilla
    @RevZilla  11 років тому

    The GT Air is not as long-oval as the RF1100, but not as round as the Qwest. I would definitely consider it an intermediate oval hemet shape. -CK

  • @RevZilla
    @RevZilla  11 років тому

    Sounds like a helmet shape issue more than a size issue. I think getting a thicker liner for the MD gives you a better shot at a good fit, but you may want to try a few other helmets on to see if a different shape fits you better. -CK

    Just bought this helmet in matte black a week ago. Good purchase I would say.

  • @RevZilla
    @RevZilla  11 років тому

    Indeed, I think this will be a good choice based on headshape, due to the long oval shape. I do disagree slightly in that I think you will notice the ventilation under 100mph. However, whether you will notice enough of it under 100mph to warrant the extra bones, perhaps not. The RF-1100 continues to be an excellent value for money product. -CK

  • @RevZilla

    If you ask me, the Shoei GT-Air beats both of those lids. I think the EXO-1100 is comparable for all around comfort and practicality. I think the Vision-R is comparable for aerodynamics and high performance. I still think the Shoei has the best of both in this case. -CK

    already ordered one for this. Just want the internal sun visor system. The other features of the helmet are fine. The valves of ventilation are enough big to hand off and one while you don't have to put the helmet down for operation. Considerable design. Can't wait to use it now. I will have more feedback after a period of time using the helmet. Cheers,

    Hi there, I would need your help please !!!! I've been shopping for
    helmets and I have a hard time finding the right fit. The problem is
    that my head measurement is pretty much in between Small and Medium size
    (about 66.5 cm) as well as being somewhere between Long oval and
    Intermediate Oval shape. As I wanted a sun visor, I tried the HJC RPHA
    ST and found out that the Medium is too loose while I get a a little
    pressure point on my forehead with the Small. Also note that the Small
    HJC sun visor is dropping a little on my nose. So I then tried the
    Medium Shoei GT Air Matte Black and it seemed to fit well compared to
    the Medium HJC. I didn't really try the Small Shoei GT as I couldn't
    really bring it down on my head (it's seemed so tight on the sides). So
    here is my question, is the Shoei Air helmets tighter then other brands
    of the same size? I looked at the Shoei Sizing chart and its the same as
    HJC and most other brands for S & M. Is it common for people
    with a 66.5 cm head to go for a Medium over a Small size?
    Please let me know. Best Regards.

    • @RevZilla
      @RevZilla  8 років тому

      +iotk First, I'll assume your head measures 56.5cm, not 66.5cm. As for sizing, both the GT-Air and RPHA ST use standard sizing, but those two helmets have different internal shapes. The GT-Air is slightly narrower and longer than the RPHA ST, so it's not surprising that the RPHA ST gave you forehead pressure. The GT-Air also has a smaller neck opening, so it's also understandable that you found the small GT-Air difficult to put on. Since you're between sizes and had difficulty trying on the size small GT-Air, I recommend you consider the size medium GT-Air and also get the slightly thicker 13mm center pad for the size medium (the stock head liner is 9mm thick). You would then remove the stock head liner and install the 13mm liner for a slightly tighter fit around the crown. It will be tighter than medium but looser than small. Hope this helps! -DrewZilla

    Hi. I just bought this helmet from a local dealer here in Norway. But my helmet did not have the Dobbel D-Ring. The dealer had no idea why some come with and without D-ring. Do you know? In my case I would prefer DD-ring.

    • @RevZilla
      @RevZilla  9 років тому +3

      ***** The European ECE-approved model comes with the ratchet closure, whereas the US DOT-approved model comes with double D-rings. They are not interchangeable, and technically speaking, it would be illegal for you to use the US-approved model in Norway. -DrewZilla

      Mark H SNELL standards are used for track and competition in the US. No SNELL rating for the GT Air anywhere in the world as it has the sun visor that voids it from getting it.

  • @psittacid

    Thanks for the reply. I tried on the Arai Signet Q recently. It is Arai's long oval shape, but my chin hit the inside of the helmet. the Defiant is an intermediate oval, so there's not much chance of it fitting. I called Shoei today and the guy recommended the RF1100 for best ventilation. I asked him about the x12 and he said I'd never benefit from the difference under 100mph. He pretty actively sold me the cheaper helmet. This is usually a good sign.

  • @RevZilla
    @RevZilla  11 років тому

    I don't believe SHARP has had a chance to test the GT-Air yet, being so new. Also, the version that they would get their hands on would be constructed slightly differently for European or UK standards. The results would be skewed when compared to the shell construction of a US DOT-rated helmet. -CK

    Do you think M is the size good for me because I have this MX helmet and the size is M 57-58cm and I just want to know that is it like the same size?

  • @HeyIKnowJaredYalud
    @HeyIKnowJaredYalud 9 років тому

    I was wondering what size would you recommened. I normally wear a medium icon armada and I'm looking to upgrade to a shoei gt air or rf1200

    • @RevZilla
      @RevZilla  9 років тому

      Jared Dulay Well the Airmada has a long/narrow oval fit, and the Shoei GT-Air and RF-1200 are more intermediate oval (not quite as long and narrow as the Airmada. I recommend using a cloth tape to measure the circumference around the crown of your head. Centimeters are easiest if you can. If you measure 57-58cm, stay with Medium in both Shoei helmets. If you measure closer to 55-56.5cm, you would actually be size small in Shoei. -DrewZilla

    Seriously, though, another brilliant review by revzilla, I've spent at least 1500 on all my various bits of biking kit and at least 75% of the research I've done has been these videos! Detailed, articulate, balanced, expert, clear, good camera work, the site seems to get articulate customers going by the comments... one of the best online shops on the internet.

    Seen that the Neotec was launched in early 2012 and this one year later, would you expect for a successor next year seen that the Neotec 2 has just been launched? I don’t know if it is ok to pay 600$ for a 5 year old lid. Thanks.

      The GT-Air is still a great design, and the helmet stock isn't five years old. They're still making them. It's certainly possible the GT-Air could be the next to be updated, but Shoei hasn't said anything yet. -DrewZilla

    I have an Xr-1100, but i am not very pleased with how much reduses the noise level.
    I have a Tiger 800 ,so i am riding in an straight up position.
    Which helm is appropriate for me? as far it concerns the NOISE
    Arai rx-quantum? Shoei Qwest? or this one is even better as it depends noise Shoei Gt-Air?

    Another question. I currently wear the Nolan N104. Nice helmet, but I would love more venting especially in the front of the helmet. The other major issue i face is wind noise. When i go above 100mph, it gets really loud. How would the GT-Air stack up for noise and venting?

    Hi, I own a Gt-Air Wanderer and I'm wondering if the top upper vent can be opened up to do some cleaning. I had it for over 3 months and rode about 1000km with it. last few days I could feel that the air ventilation on the top is not really working properly. Can the top air vent be removed for cleaning and do I need to use any adhesive to place it back on the helmet ?

    • @RevZilla
      @RevZilla  7 років тому +1

      We do not recommend trying to open it up from the outside. However, if you remove the inner comfort head liner, you should be able to use a Q-tip to clean the vent holes from the inside. Just be very careful. -DrewZilla

    I just bought this baby today. It's incredibly silent even in higher speeds (95mph and higher). Only after 70 kilometers (circa 40 miles) ride my neck hurts a bit because the air is flowing through different ways than it did on my old helmet. I hope it's just a matter of getting used to it.

  • @Pogomix

    I'd buy the GT Air if my glasses fit better. At stock, the helmet doesn't really cater for us riders with specs. My glasses need to wedge in and sit too high on my face. I really hope something can be done about that... this is an awesome helmet, especially in the Wanderer style.

    I cannot find actual road tests on the GT Air yet. I live in Texas and am moving away from modular helmets. I ride all year and am looking for a helmet that will vent spectacularly in the summer. I ride a Ducati Monster - about 3/4 position, I think. My Multitec was good for summer, my RF1000...not so much. I like the internal visor, but could live without it. Should I get a GT Air or RF-1100? Both fit. Thanks in advance for your advice.

    How much does the medium gt-air weigh?
    I need a lighter helmet due to a neck injury. My current Bell is 1739 grams / 3.83lbs.
    I'm looking for a helmet south of 3.5lbs.

    Lovely helmet. Great weight and feel. disappointed about the in the box Pin Lock system, I have been having terrible trouble getting a seal and getting a lot of fogging. Looks like the pins are to long but im sure Shoei support will help

    • @dennism1919
      @dennism1919 10 років тому

      Please update if you have contacted Shoei support. I'm curious about what they say about this. I am experiencing a bit of the same thing with the Neotech. The pinlock deos not provide a good enough seal between the lenses. Thanks!

    • @smallshinyant
      @smallshinyant 10 років тому

      Dennis M I dropped their support an email explaining the issue and showing where the movement in the pins push the pinlock away from the visor on the sides. They are sending me some new pins in case these one are not to tolerance. I have also ordered myself a new insert as i wonder if maybe that was at fault. Will report back how it goes.

    • @dennism1919
      @dennism1919 10 років тому +1

      smallshinyant Many thanks for the response. After careful consideration I have deducted that it could be the pinlock lens in my case as well. I have had my Neotech for a while now and perhaps the sealant material is starting to get brittle and won't create a decent seal any more. So I am going to try a new pinlock insert as well and see if that solves the issue. For reference, I bought a pinlock setup for my RF-1100 and it does not have this issue. Best of luck! I hope that is the fix for you.

    • @smallshinyant
      @smallshinyant 10 років тому

      Dennis M No problem. Just to let you know that Shoei(UK support) sent me some replacement pins. This set a lot less proud on the inside and the new pinlock insert i brought makes a much better fit. So if you are still having problems once you have a new insert i would certainly suggest new pins.

    Lovely helmet and owned mine for six days now but as others have said there is an issue with fogging up with pinlock. The fogging is not happening between the 'double glazing' but on the actual inside where your head is up one side. Its a shame and I will be going back to shop if it carries on at £400 surely it should not do this and my friend also has the exact same helmet with the exact same problem! I would say its something to do with air flow some where and I will keep experimenting with the vents. One more thing google it and plenty more people having the same problem, shame as it really is a lovely helmet and fits like a glove.
