I prefer applying lemon grass tea infused cucumber slices to the face shield, almond and coconut paste to the shell and then do a nice Jamaican Blue coffee cleanse to the internal padding. That takes years off of your helmet and makes it feel like something newer and fresher is sitting on your face.
Someone below said it best: "As experienced riders we often lose sight of sharing that experience with riders who are relatively new". Even though this is dead simple, we all have a first time and want to get it right. Your video(s) really help so pay no mind to the naysayers! A few times you mentioned changing the pin-lock. My helmet is only a year old (HJC IS Max 2) and there doesn't seem to be any reason to worry about the pin-lock yet. How can I tell if it needs to be replaced?
Once the silicone seal around the Pinlock starts to degrade or the Pinlock insert has a harder time resisting fogging, then it's time to replace it. -DrewZilla
I use a microfiber cloth and Meguiars Ultimate Quik Wax. It works great for cleaning off the exterior of the helmet, while leaving a nice wax coating which will help the surface bead up water and keep the helmet easy to clean after use.
I travelled across washington, Idaho and Montana last spring and I was seriously coated in bug guts. Stopped at a rather nice hotel and ended up climbing in the shower in full gear to rinse most of it off. I’ll never forget the smell (I cleaned up the bathroom after, I didn’t want to be ‘that guy’), but it was nice not smelling like a bait shop starting the next morning. X-/
Great video Spurge. As experienced riders we often lose sight of sharing that experience with riders who are relatively new to biking and vids like this, simple as it is, are an excellent way to share the love. :-)
i always do that with my Spyder...but when i have this Evo DX7 i now doing this process😁 but those internals doesnt use any fabric conditioner, i just use light powdered soap then rinse it in water with white vinegar...works well on me,
microfiber towels are 99,9 % risk free of scratching .. however ..if rubbed over a dirty helmet it WILL scratch .. it will be like using sandpaper or scuffpads on your helmet. just a note for those testing this ^.^.. its ofc realy obvious , just making sure haha nice vid ofc as allways
Good info but a lot of work. I simply keep the outside clean weekly and every few months I polish it. As far as the visor, glasses cleaner works well (has not damaged it yet) or just soapy water with dish liquid. The interior padding, I just take it out and throw it in the washing machine along with my jacket and wash in cold water, delicate cycle then air dry. Both the jacket and helmet liner come out great every time. Right or wrong, its easy and quick.
That's what I use, windex and a wash rag. Give it a good wipe down after a ride. Probably not the best long-term but if I had a $500 helmet I probably would be more careful with it. The ones I use are between $150 and $200.
I've got a Bell Broozer and it's interior liner which touches the forehead is non removable. Because of buildup of sweat it's getting the visor all smudged up whenever I open/close it. Any advice on how I can clean this non removable padding? I ended up not using the helmet anymore and it was my favourite one. TIA
Ironic that this popped up in my email tonight. I commute in the PNW and between the rain and road-grease, my white helmet was more gray/black so I figured I’d wipe it down before I started my 35 mile ride home (before I saw this). I found out my shell was chipped and I had a crack I thought was just grime... it went for its last ride tonight. I already bought a new helmet (part of the reason Revzilla sent me the email), but I guess that was good timing (and a good reason to clean your lid more often than I have been).
Is this that dude Nick on good girl? Anyways. I have a rpha 70 and the sunshield is fuxked, most likely from sand/ dust gathering inside the tiny compartment where its laying. So each time ive flipped it up and down, more scratches came. Compressor to clean there also?
Haha he picks these particular cleaning equipment because they are easily accessible for us at home, and then whips out an air compressor. I checked under my kitchen sink, I couldn't find one haha
I do hate removing the internals on my Arai Signet helmet. For some reason, I struggle getting everything reinstalled correctly. Maybe just need more practice.
They can be a little tricky, but once you get the hang of it you will find you can remove and re-install them with ease. DO take the covers off of Arai cheek pads though. They have an EPS-type styrofoam that you don't want to wash along with the cover.
No expert here, but if stored indoors in a dry environment it shouldn’t matter up or down. Leaving the liner wet to mold or subjecting the helmet to sunlight excessively would be hard on the materials. I like to set my helmet in front of a fan that’s blowing to help dry it on those sweaty days. I would never apply heat to it.
The straps can also be wiped down with a gentle cleaner like soap and water, then air dried. Since they are usually a tougher material they don't absorb as much sweat and dirt as the soft inner linings. I hope that helps! -Zack

Washed the liner of my G-max FF49, and it never fit right again. Bought a new liner, and the helmet fit like new. I figure once a year is well worth it, assuming the liner isn’t too expensive.
I notice I'm getting a rainbow/ripple effect on my smoke shield after cleaning. I've been cleaning with warm water on a microfiber, followed with plexus. Any ideas?
You said not to use any external/extra heat source to dry. Whenever i have washe gloves or even normal clothes, if you don't do this they stink. In fact they have the same smell that i'm trying to get rid of but stronger.
I definitely need to wash my helmet but I'm unsure about filling the inside with water and soap since I spent $350 on the helmet and I don't want to mess it up but the liner is not removable. Do you throw away the microfiber cloth after use, or can you wash it in the washing machine and reuse? Heared that once you wash it it gets hard and can create swirls on the surface.
You can wash microfiber, but you should use a specific microfiber wash, wash microfiber towels with a hot water setting (don't mix with other non-microfiber laundry), then dry it by itself on a low heat setting. -DrewZilla

Clean your face shield before your helmet or use a fresh microfibre rag and clean water so as to avoid scratching your visor with dirt that might be in the water you just used to clean your helmet with.
How old is the helmet? Helmets should be replaced every 5 years. If your helmet is less than 5 years old, then you might be able to replace the neck padding. -DrewZilla
